Watercolor Workshops with Megan Gizzi July is National Watercolor month! Watercolor, also “aquarelle” from Italian for “water,” is an ancient form of painting. In East Asia, watercolor painting with inks is referred to as brush painting or scroll painting. In Chinese, Korean and Japanese painting it has been the dominant medium, often in monochrome black or browns, often using ink stick or other pigments. India, Ethiopia and other countries have long watercolor painting traditions as well. Join Meg Gizzi, University of Michigan Penny Stamps School of Art and Design alum 7

and Eastern Michigan University lecturer, and create your own watercolors. Beginners are welcome. Phone Photography Workshops with Angela Angela Swan has been a fine art and portrait photographer for over 20 years. During her 7-year career as a wedding photojournalist, she honed skills to make you and your loved ones look great! She will teach us how to find flattering light sources for taking people pictures and basic editing on smartphones. Found Object Sculpture Workshops Found Object Sculpture is when artists use objects that they may come across in everyday life to create a threedimensional piece of art. In a few words, Marcel Duchamp aptly summarized the work of the radical Found Object movement: “… an ordinary object could be elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of the artist.” This movement confronted not only traditional ideas about what art is, but also gave renewed life to objects that were the product of mass production, and questioned consumerism – which were both ideas that were emerging at the time in response to the industrial revolution.

ANDREA JACQUES' “IKIGAI” WORKSHOPS Kyosei Consulting is a training, coaching and creative firm with more than two decades of experience working with everyone from startup entrepreneurs to Fortune 500’s. Kyosei (kyō – say) is a Japanese word that means “living and working together for the common good.” Kyosei is more than just a name – Founder Andrea Jacques and her team are on a mission to transform the ways people live, work and do business in order to build foundations for a world where everyone wins. “Ikigai” is translated as life + value or “that which makes life worth living.” In English, this term is often translated as having a sense of purpose. Jacques and the Kyosei team will walk us through a series of personalized workshops in which residents will (re)discover what gives a sense of purpose at any age.

RESIDENT POETRY When asked why she came to our first Poetry Workshop with Amy Johnson, Rosella Bannister shared she’d always wanted to write poetry, but never had the time. Then Rosella quoted her most inspiring poem, “Thanatopsis” by William Cullen Bryant: “...So live, that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan… Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.” Another participant in the workshop, Dorothy, started off a collaborative poetry exercise by choosing the subject of “Memories.” Here’s the poem created when Dorothy, Rosella, and each workshop attendee added a line following a prompt by Amy Johnson:

MEMORIES Good idea to keep good memories last forever moments like branches in trees please tease sneeze Onward, my liege. Memories are like a warm hug thug chug pass along as a song My friend Jen, had gems in her hem. So many memories are all I have left - but at least I have them. Wish I still had all of my memories remembered. Swish! bad memories gone good ones a song.

Merry Wives of Windsor at Village Theater - August 17 Mistress Page and Mistress Ford have a very large problem – a drunken rogue who won’t leave them alone. Sir John Falstaff is short of money and on the hunt for a lady willing to take him on and pay his bills. The ladies get together and hatch a hilarious plan to thwart the pest – if only their husbands are able to stay out of the way. The Merry Wives of Windsor is famously the result of Queen Elizabeth I demanding that Shakespeare write a play featuring Falstaff falling in love – and how else could such a request play out.

Ann Arbor Bonsai Society Show at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens August 27 Award winning trees from area enthusiasts, with bonsai and bonsai supplies for sale.

Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra - September 9 Your Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra launches its 2022-2023 season in style with an electrifying opening-night performance of Beethoven, Simon and Rachmaninoff. Acclaimed Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan joins the A²SO to star in Rachmaninoff’s fiendishly virtuosic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a work that demands the utmost skill and stamina of the soloist as they seek to walk its tightrope passages with high-flying aplomb. Hear it alongside Carlos Simon’s This Land, a striking work of dichotomies that blends faint hymns and anthems of immigrants over a hopeful yet hesitant orchestral tapestry.

15

University Musical Society (UMS) presents Trevor Noah - September 16 The Emmy and Peabody Award-winning host of “The Daily Show,” is widely known for his social commentary touching upon issues of racism, immigration, incarceration, and the protest movement. Born in South Africa to a Black South African mother and a white European father during apartheid, Noah knows what it means to live in a divided nation, and he brings a unique perspective in his incisive social and political criticism of the larger issues at play in the U.S. and in the world today. His “Back to Abnormal” tour marks his first live UMS appearance.

TESTIMONIALS

FROM OUR RESIDENTS & FAMILIES Maureen @ ASAA: “Who would have believed that a senior community could become my extended family in a matter of months? Such was my experience this summer and I consider my decision to move to All Seasons Ann Arbor one of my best.” Ardin @ ASBH: “My 97 year old father just moved into his apartment at All Seasons. It's a beautiful apartment. He has met some wonderful residents here and is having no trouble making new friends. The dining room is beautiful and Dad says the food is really good. He has attended some concerts and looks forward to picking out the next activity from a list of many great things to do. He has even hopped on the treadmill in the exercise room at All Seasons. He is very happy here. The staff is so friendly and very helpful. I'm so glad Dad suggested we take a tour of All Seasons to see what they had to offer.” Dianna @ ASNA: “I can’t say enough good things about All Seasons. My father in law came from Manhattan and has never looked or felt better with the care he has been given in assisted living. My mom had a water leak in her house and was only staying in All Seasons temporarily. After two months, she put her home up for sale and never looked back. She loves all the daily activities All Seasons provides, music, food and gatherings are above and beyond.” Johnny @ ASOV: “Walking into All Seasons for the first time was like walking into a beautiful picture! I was amazed at the care and detail the architect’s took when creating this home for the Residents. Seeing the smile on the Residents and employees’ faces told me that this home was not only beautiful, but that the care and detail extended far into the heart of the building.” Kevin @ ASRH: “Love this place… people are so friendly… love the atmosphere… and when they were showing me around several residents came up and said they love it here.” Randi @ ASWB: “My mother has lived at ASWB for 2 years. The staff at All Seasons are caring and kind. It’s nice to come in and be greeted with smiling faces who are willing to help. The dining room staff have been very accommodating and helpful. They go out of their way to make things right. All the staff did a wonderful job during COVID to make residents feel comfortable and safe.” 22

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT MEET JOHN MORENO John has dedicated his life to education. While studying architecture, he switched to Art Education after a professor emphasized most students would become draftsmen. John’s Master of Art degree is in Ceramics. His first job was as an art teacher with minority, inner city boys at an alternative school. Their attitudes and street smarts were a real eye opener. After 4 years, John had the opportunity to teach junior high students a broad range of mediums, with ceramics as a focus.

Fastforwarding a couple decades -- after John and his wife, Dottie, moved to All Seasons Ann Arbor, he suggested that the men of the community gather for a ‘coffee hour.’ It took off from there! John facilitates the conversations each Wednesday. Springboarding from his love of Social Studies, topics are relevant and current, with an emphasis on awareness and interconnection of issues. John’s current interest is how racism shows itself today and how events are being left out of history books. John is also dedicated to ensuring ASAA residents have current Voter Registration Cards.

PHILANTHROPY SPOTLIGHT Friends of the Children - Detroit School Supply Drive

23

Friends of the Children - Detroit is the local chapter of a nation-wide organization that pairs paid mentors with at-risk youth for years of support, helping them build trust and inner strength. About 78% of Detroit youth live in high-poverty neighborhoods. Friends of the Children - Detroit is working to end generational poverty through their mentoring program. Their model is evidence-informed and researchbased with proven long-term outcomes. "Research shows that a child who has a consistent caring adult in their lives has

a better outcome for life, and so we start with children from 4 to 6 years old, and we mentor them until they graduate from high school.” – E.D. Nicole McKinney. Pitch in with the other All Seasons communities, raise funds and collect school supplies for K - 2nd graders throughout the beginning of August! Then join residents from across the All Seasons communities to deliver the supplies in person at the org’s summer party downtown on August 13!

tips All Seasons Residents, Staff, and Families Improve Communication Using Caremerge Family Engagement Beginning in early 2020, when COVID-19 changed the way we engage with our loved ones outside our buildings, residents in our six All Seasons communities wanted an easier way to keep in touch with their families. Using Caremerge as our technology partner, the Family Engagement platform has been an easy tool to use to improve communication and critical to improving isolation and loneliness, which can have serious health implications in adults, negatively impacting mental and

physical health. As we continue to navigate the hardships of the pandemic, family communication remains vitally important. Caremerge Family Engagement allows staff to upload photos and videos, publish announcements, and survey residents and families about community life To learn how you can improve family communication with CareMerge, contact your Director of Life Enrichment today!.

The Berlin Philharmonic is a German orchestra based in Berlin. It all started with an act of rebellion: in March 1882, 50 members of the ensemble run by the popular musical director Benjamin Bilse refused to sign their new contracts – SEASON OPENING 2022: KIRILL they found the working conditions too PETRENKO CONDUCTS MAHLER’S unfavourable: they were to earn hardly SEVENTH SYMPHONY more than day labourers. DESIGNING ALL SEASONS A WORD ABOUT THE ART We are happy to share with our residents, visitors, and friends the art exhibited throughout our community. Each piece was individually conceived and created specifically for where it is presented for collective viewing enjoyment. To put it another way, the photographs are specifically curated considering the interior design and dimensions of each room. Each of the six All Seasons - in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Naples, Oro Valley, Rochester Hills, and West Bloomfield - showcase photography highlighting the local natural landscape and urban features, creating a porous border between interior and exterior beauty. We are committed and proud to display art within our communities that has been commissioned specifically for the purpose of enhancing the beauty of the communities as well as inspiring a sense of energy and joy. It is consistent with our mission to create within our communities an atmosphere which we are proud to proclaim is engaging, enlivening, innovative, and “totally captivating.” For that purpose, a great deal of time, effort and resources are dedicated 25

to each community for the creation of a portfolio that is totally unique, privately commissioned, and signed by the creator. These art collections are highly valued and significantly insured. We hope that these unique pieces - in some cases on canvases up to 10 feet long - express the exuberance of their subjects and engender the energy and “felt” experience of being alive - indeed, of life itself.

A COLUMN ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL

WELLNESS CORNER: SOUND HEALTH Did you know about the groundbreaking Sound Health Initiative and “Music and the Mind”? If you haven’t, you might have heard of one of the key stakeholders of the project -none other than renowned soprano Renée Fleming! Renée Fleming is a leading advocate for the study of the powerful connections between the arts and health. As Artistic Advisor at Large to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Renée has spearheaded a collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with the participation of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The Sound Health initiative explores and brings attention to research and practice at the intersection of music, health, and neuroscience.

Renée Fleming is passionate about the central importance of music and the arts in our society. Most of us have, at times, felt moved or comforted by music, but scientists are now discovering that music can teach us a lot about the brain itself. Music engages many neural regions at once, and evidence suggests that it can shape and even alter our brains. In addition to using music to better understand the complex functioning of the brain, researchers have found creative arts therapy to be effective tools in addressing the effects of an ever-widening array of conditions. Especially compelling is the fact that music, dance, and art therapies are cost-effective, non-pharmaceutical, and noninvasive. Many can be administered in group settings, offering benefits for emotional wellbeing, and through tele-health, increasing accessibility. And the impact of arts on the developing brains of children is another burgeoning field of study, with effects reaching beyond test results and scholastic aptitude to creativity and success throughout life.
