MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
LOIC VINCE
“Spring is coming…Time for some cleaning. Remove all the self-doubt, worry, jealousy, regret, anger, guilt, or any other negative emotions that are holding you back from your happy, fulfilled life.” - Nanette Mathews It finally feels as though Spring has sprung here at All Seasons Ann Arbor. This winter felt longer than most due to the rise in new COVID variant cases and the long cold days of winter, but the community made it through with a positive mindset and great respect for one another. I want to express my gratitude to each of you for making this community the best place to reside in Ann Arbor. As we look ahead, I thought I’d highlight a few of the things that the team and I are thrilled about. Our next culinary journey includes an 8-episode “Around The World in 80 Days” miniseries followed by a gastronomy pairing of special dishes from each episode’s featured country. In May, we’ll head south of the border to learn more about Mexico’s culinary traditions. In celebration of the birthday of Thailand’s Queen Suthida, “A Taste of Thailand” will follow in June. Finally, Angela Swan and our Life Enrichment Team have been working meticulously and joyfully to provide a fantastic agenda to enliven your senses. Some of the highlights this quarter include the second season of the All Seasons Chorus directed by a Music Education graduate student, a presentation on courage and perseverance by a cross country cyclist and author, poetry workshops in honor of National Poetry month, and events with the Artistic Leadership of Detroit Public Theatre about their hit show “Detroit ‘67” by Broadway playwright and Michigan native Dominique Morisseau. I encourage you to invite a new neighbor and try something new. As always, if there is anything I can do to facilitate your fullest enjoyment of All Seasons, I am at your service. 3

Indigenous people migrated to the Americas more than 15,000 years ago. Their settlements spread over all of North, Central and South America, long before Europeans arrived. This lecture series focuses on the Native Americans who settled and thrived in the Great Lakes region for thousands of years. It will examine their various lifestyles, technologies, cultures, and religious beliefs in the near and distant past as well as the present. It will investigate the impact and the disruption that the arrival of Europeans had on their way of life. One topic that is especially relevant today, given climate change and other environmental problems, is the sustainable conception many Native Americans have of the relation between humans and the natural world. NOTABLE DAYS & EVENTS The Kentucky Derby - May 7th - is a horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The competition is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds at a distance of one and a quarter miles at Churchill Downs. We’ll be watching heartfelt films and historical documentaries, and creating extravagant hats to wear as we watch the races in our Mill Pub! Earth Day - April 22nd - Join us in celebrating and appreciating our planet Earth with a nature walk around Parker Mill and Huron trails. We’ll also be creating the ever popular circular Pour Paintings in earth colors to fill our Resident Artwork Display space! In May, we will showcase a Resident Picture Exhibit for National Photography Month. In conjunction with our Photography Workshop, we’ll also be creating a body of work that captures our community members and the things they hold dear to their heart. Mother's Day - May 8th - is a celebration honoring the mother of the family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, whose mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health, originated Mother’s Day and in 1914 U.S. Pres. Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. Did you know that more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year? Join us for a Sunday Social with live music to celebrate the mother in all of us.
Father’s Day Social - Father’s Day in the United States is a holiday (third Sunday in June) to honor fathers. Credit for originating the holiday is generally given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, WA, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. President Nixon established it as a national holiday in 1972. Join us in celebrating with a Sunday Social. Juneteenth - June 19 - We will commemorate this day with a documentary on Juneteenth’s history and a celebration of freedom. Juneteenth commemorates the day when emancipation reached enslaved people in the deepest parts of the South. It wasn't until June 19, 1865, two months after the Civil War ended and more than two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, that Union Gen. Gordon Granger and more than a thousand U.S. troops shared the news of freedom with the 250,000 enslaved people in the state. The anniversary of that day is celebrated as one of the best-regarded African American holidays in this country.

that long awaited date— intrudes fresh concern— requires brusque u-turn. yet casually unheeded. Divisions firmly entrenched, hopes once again quenched? Emotions collide, as doors swing shut. Expectations unfilled, still in a rut. Marking our time, to drummer’s slow beat, forward the pace, shuns further retreat. Precise steps, on wobbling wire. All join hands, in single file.
Rona @ ASWB: “I’ve been a resident here at All Seasons for almost 3 years and I love it. My apartment is beautiful and my view is the courtyard. Couldn’t ask for a better view. I love the staff here. This is an amazing community with very talented entertainers. Molly does a great job at getting great entertainment here.”
Clouds will lift, fog to dissipate, light pours in, soon to celebrate.

tips All Seasons Residents, Staff, and Families Improve Communication Using Caremerge Family Engagement Beginning in early 2020, when COVID-19 changed the way we engage with our loved ones outside our buildings, residents in our six All Seasons communities wanted an easier way to keep in touch with their families. Using Caremerge as our technology partner, the Family Engagement platform has been an easy tool to use to improve communication and critical to improving isolation and loneliness, which
can have serious health implications in adults, negatively impacting mental and physical health. As we continue to navigate the hardships of the pandemic, family communication remains vitally important. Caremerge Family Engagement allows staff to upload photos and videos, publish announcements, and survey residents and families about community life.
To learn how you can improve family communication with CareMerge, contact your Director of Life Enrichment today!
PHILANTHROPY SPOTLIGHT Last quarter we reestablished our relationship with Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, which seeks to reduce hunger and food insecurity for homebound adults in Ann Arbor who are frail, medically compromised, or have a short-or long-term disability that impacts their ability to shop and prepare complete, nutritious meals. The residents of All Seasons Ann Arbor created 350 cards of encouragement and cheerful decorations that were delivered with each meal! 23
DESIGNING ALL SEASONS THE MAGIC OF A BÖSENDORFER: AN ALL SEASONS STAPLE Bechstein pianos were the only instruments capable of withstanding his tremendously powerful playing.
\ You may have noticed the grand pianos which command attention in the grand living spaces of our communities. Maybe you've noticed the way musicians are drawn to them, how they relish in the sounds and feels of bringing a Bösendorfer to life. But if you're unfamiliar with the pianos and their history, you're not alone. Here are just some of the reasons these pianos are truly unique and beloved by the most celebrated pianists throughout history. In 1824, Ignaz Bosendorfer began refining the handmade pianos of Joseph Brodman, a piano builder in Vienna. Primarily, he wanted to heighten the volume of the instrument, whilst preserving the soft, melodious sound of the string. After having won gold medals at industry exhibitions, Ignaz Bosendorfer was awarded the grand title of ‘Imperial and Royal Fortepiano Purveyor to the Court’ in 1839 by Emperor Ferdinand I because of his work. Among the earliest artists to be associated with Bösendorfer was Franz Liszt who at least once opined that Bösendorfer and
Bösendorfer remains the premier Austrian piano manufacturer and is unusual in that it produces 97- and 92-key models, in addition to instruments with standard 88-key keyboards. Contrary to all other manufacturers, Bösendorfer constructs instruments concentrating on the use of spruce. More than 80% of spruce, ideal for instruments, can be found in Bösendorfer pianos. The whole body - not exclusively the soundboard - supports sound formation. The actual core of the piano rim consists of a 10 mm quarter-sawn piece that is specially grooved by craftsmen to allow it to be bent to the silhouette around the inner rim. This is unique to Bösendorfer. When a note is played, the integrated spruce components become acoustically active, forming a complete resonating body that allows the whole instrument to project the music. Also, Bösendorfer is the only piano manufacturer that applies a detachable and independent Capo d’Astro in the upper register. This is how artisans assure the most precise adjustment in the upper register, guaranteeing the original Bösendorfer sound for generations. We are proud to offer these world renowned instruments to resident and touring musicians for a unique All Seasons experience.

A COLUMN ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL
WELLNESS CORNER: IKIGAI Sources: BBC by Yukari Mitsuhashi With no direct English translation, Ikigai is a term that embodies the idea of happiness in living. It is composed of two words: iki, which means life, and gai, which describes value or worth. Author and psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya explains that “ikigai” is like happiness but has a subtle difference in its nuance. Ikigai is what allows you to look forward to the future even if you’re unhappy right now. Japanese people believe that the sum of small joys in everyday life results in a more fulfilling life as a whole. Essentially, ikigai is the reason why you get up in the morning. A concept for longevity? Japan has some of the longest-living citizens in the world – 87 years for women and 81 for men, according to the country’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Could this concept of ikigai contribute to longevity? Author Dan Buettner believes it does. He's the author of “Blue Zones: Lessons on Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest,” and has travelled the globe exploring long-lived
communities around the world. One such location is Okinawa, a remote island with a remarkably high number of centenarians. While a unique diet likely has a lot to do with residents’ longevity, Buettner says ikigai also plays a part. “Older people are celebrated, they feel obligated to pass on their wisdom to younger generations,” he says. This gives them a purpose in life outside of themselves, in service to their communities. What You Can Do Buettner suggests making three lists: your values, things you like to do, and things you are good at. The cross section of the three lists is your ikigai! But, knowing your ikigai alone is not enough. Simply put, you need an outlet. Ikigai is “purpose in action,” he says. For 92-year-old Tomi Menaka, her ikigai is to dance and sing with her peers in the KBG84 dance troupe, she told the Mainichi newspaper. For others, it might be work itself, volunteering, or learning new skills. To live with more “ikigai,” reach out to your Director of Life Enrichment to learn more about opportunities through All Seasons.
