PSYCHOANALYSIS
Following in the footsteps of philosopher Ernst Cassirer, who described the human being as a symbolic animal, Levy takes readers on an extraordinary journey to the heart of contemporary psychoanalytic theory by examining the central role that symbolic processes – their vicissitudes, possibilities, and failures – play in psychic functioning, emotional development, the formation of the self, and the therapeutic action of the analytic process. Readers of all levels will emerge with a heightened sense of the applicability, power, and ongoing evolution of psychoanalytic theory and practice in the twenty-first century.

Levy
In this book, Ruggero Levy takes us, in a powerful and delicate way, through the mysterious and fascinating process of symbolization. He addresses in detail its origins and factors that predispose to failures and deficits, when the analyst is faced with terrors, discharges, somatizations, hallucinations, emptiness, feelings of nonexistence. The book illustrates how analytical work can produce representations and fill gaps in the symbolic network of thought. The richness of ideas will make the reader feel like a co-participant in the text.
Ruggero Levy
Symbolization in psychoanalysis
Ruggero Levy was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1952. He came to Porto Alegre with his family, graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and completed his analytical training at the Porto Alegre Psychoanalytic Society (SPPA) in 1995, becoming a full member and training analyst (2002), president (2006–2007) and director of the institute (2009). With a solid psychoanalytic and humanistic culture, creativity, work capacity, leadership, and talent for teaching, supervision and clinical practice, Ruggero Levy has a successful career. In Symbolization in Psychoanalysis, the author brings together and deepens his fruitful journey that, like his patients, students and colleagues, I have had the pleasure and pride of sharing.
