Soul of the driftless coon valley & chaseburg

LOCAL FEATUREs: coon valley

Coon Valley is home to the U.S.’s first large-scale watershed conservation project, which began in the 1930s. Over the course of the project, watershed residents collaborated with local, state, and federal conservation partners to develop land management practices that would address escalating cycles of flooding and erosion triggered by Euro-American agriculture. These soil conservation techniques significantly reduced flooding and erosion in the Coon Creek Watershed, and informed approaches to land conservation across the nation. The Coon Creek Community Watershed Council (CCCWC), a volunteer-led nonprofit founded in 2021, continues this historic legacy of environmental stewardship.

chaseburg

Chaseburg is known as Vernon County’s winter wonderland. The Chaseburg Snowtrailers, active since the 1970s, maintain miles of snowmobile trails through the local ridges and valleys. Join the fun during Trail Days each January, featuring a poker run, dance, parade, and Chicken Q—yes, a parade in January! The Snowtrailers are also community-driven, supporting various local events throughout the year.
