Mixed Use Development
The Sustainable Urbanism typology is based on the principle of multi-
functionality. The term Multifunctionality denotes the ability of a large system
to perform many functions. In this thesis, functions are urban services which are
different types of activities in an urban area (housing, industry, health care, trade,
education, etc.). This thesis aims to study Multifunctionality as a phenomenon
of the urban environment.
Mixed-use development is the practice of allowing more than one type
of use in a building or set of buildings. In planning terms, this can mean some
combination of residential, commercial, industrial, office, institutional, or other
land uses. This tends to create a shorter distance between work, residence, and
recreation and goes a long way to enhance the livelihood of the inhabitants.
