WELCOME

Welcome to our fifth annual bull sale. We’ve had some big but exciting changes this year. Kassi and I welcomed our first child, Ryler, into the world in early January. He has been our greatest blessing yet. We then moved up to Rugby to her folks’ outfit and started calving cows the 25th of January. It’s been a lot of back and forth since then, but we are excited for the future of our family and our cattle operation. We feel like this move will set us up the best for future success.

This year we are offering 40 yearling bulls. Another mild winter and spring has sure been nice. Couple that with new record high prices for calves, fats, and cull cows, and there is no doubt that now is the time to be in the cow-calf business. With that being said, cows that hold up and last longer in your herd are going to put more profit in your pocket over time. Out of the 40 bulls being offered, every cow has a calf at side this spring with the exception of the Lot 17 bull. His eightyear-old dam we left open to flush all fall and winter. We don’t sell bulls out of young open cows because those cows are NOT profitable!

The bulls are developed slowly on a low mega-Cal TMR that never exceeded a 48 mega-Cal this year. We start them out on a 44 mega-Cal at weaning and gradually increase to a 48. We don’t push the bulls hard, because we don’t want them to fall apart during the breeding season. They’re developed to last for many years. The average daily gain data you see is not from a “test” period. It is from the time we record weaning weights, at weaning time, until we record yearling weights at the end of February.

We place a lot of emphasis on the mother cow, and that’s why we display their age, MPPA, udder and teat score with their son’s data. Our cows are not pampered and must work for a living. We do not under-stock our pastures in an attempt to boost our weaning weights and keep all the cows in good shape. We run our purebred cows at the same stocking rate as our commercial herd so that the data you’re seeing is legitimate. This also helps us recognize differences in the fleshing ability of our cows in order to cull those that can’t maintain adequate body condition while raising their calf.

We cull hard here, especially for feet. We wouldn’t want to buy a bull out of a cow with bad feet or udders and believe that nobody else would either. That’s why we never offer progeny for sale out of cows with those traits and avoid breeding to sires known to produce offspring with poor foot quality. It doesn’t matter how good their EPD’s are. If they have bad feet, they’re culled.

Sale Order/Supplement Sheet:

HEIFERS: will sell first. We are going to offer choice three times and then sell the remaining heifers as a group. However, the first high bidder or any high bidder after can choose to take all the remaining heifers at their high bid if they so choose. BULLS: will sell in catalog order. A supplement sheet will be available sale day with carcass ultrasound data, scrotal circumference and current weights.

Terms & Conditions:

Terms of the sale are cash. All settlements must be made at the close of the auction unless previous arrangements have been made. The auctioneer will settle any bidding disputes. All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. The bulls will sell in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth by the Red Angus Association of America.

Ration:

Bulls are developed on a TMR ration of ground hay, earlage, beet pulp, modified dry distillers grain, and mineral supplement. Ration never exceeds a 48 mCal. Formulated by Dr. Richard Roth, DVM.

Delivery:

We will start delivering the bulls shortly after the sale. Free delivery offered for bulls sold into North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota. We will cooperate with buyers on delivery of bulls outside of this area, regardless of distance.

Guarantee:

Bulls are guaranteed to your satisfaction and will have passed a semen test before delivery. If any problem arises, a replacement will be provided to use if available as well as credit for next year. The heifers have had their pre-breeding shots, are bangs vaccintated and checked open and breedable.

Herd Health:

Our herd is under a complete herd health program utilizing both the Enderlin Vet Clinic and the Lisbon Vet Clinic. Health papers will be issued as needed.

Genetic Testing:

Every bull for sale will be genetically tested for enhanced EPDs, parentage verification, and are free of any known genetic defects.

Semen Interest:

Oland Red Angus is retaining one-half semen interest in all bulls sold.

Cattle Viewing:

Anybody who comes out and views the bulls before sale day will be given $100 credit per bull purchased. We want to be able to help select the bulls that will best fit your operation.

We are firm believers that good bulls come from a strong cow herd. A strong cow herd does not mean cows that only wean a heavy calf or look pretty. In our eyes, a strong cow herd should be built upon cows that do wean a heavy calf and look the part themselves; however, they also need to be structurally sound in that they have good feet and legs, a sound udder, and correct teat size. They also need to be able to maintain their body condition without requiring preferential treatment, breed back on time, and calve unassisted. We graze our cows on pasture, cover crops, and corn stalks as long as mother nature will allow before bringing them home about a month before calving to supplement them. If a cow can flourish in our system, we believe that their progeny will work for most operations.

• The lot pictured below is where we develop our bulls and is what we feel sets us apart from the mainstream seedstock producers.

• It is a sixth of a mile long with the bunk-line and water source at opposite ends. The bed-pack is located in the center of the lot.

• These bulls will have put on, at minimum, 100 miles from the time they’ve been weaned to sale day.

• This ensures that our bulls WILL be in shape to cover many cows in their first breeding season, all while maintaining their body condition.

When selecting sires to AI to, one of our stipulations is that they must be at least five years old. A bull’s daughters will not have their first calf until he is four. We believe that by waiting until a bull is at least five years old, we will gain valuable information such as how his daughters are for mothering ability, how their udder is developed, if they breed back as second calvers and how their feet are structured. We will also have a good idea of how his sons are accepted in the industry by that point. We aim to produce cattle that last.

Udder Scoring: We utilize the RAAA’s two score system, illustrated below, to score teat and udders in our herd. We use this as a tool to ensure our cow herd meets our standards in terms of udder quality.

This year, we have decided to sell 10 head of Red Angus heifers right out of our replacement pen. This is the first year we have sold any females. We have been retaining them all to grow our herd since we started and have reached the point where we have too many to pasture. We know the caliber these heifers have the potential to grow into and are excited to give you the opportunity to incorporate them into your herd.

The heifers have all been bangs vaccinated, received their pre-breeding shots, and been checked open and breedable. We are going to sell the heifers as commercial, however, we will offer the opportunity to register them for an extra $150/head over the purchase price.

We are going to offer choice up to three times and if any heifers remain after that, they will be tied together and sold as a group. The winning bidder has the option to pick one or take as many as they want. For instance, the winning bidder could decide to pick just one heifer or take all ten if they so choose.

HERD BULL.

• One of the best bulls we have ever raised. We tried for over an hour to get a picture that would do him justice. You must see him in person to understand just how good he truly is.

He’s got the actual data, the EPD’s, the physical attributes, great feet, large scrotal and an amazing cow family.

Dam sent a Herd Bull to Flying K Red Angus of Swift Current, Saskatchewan last year and we think this guy is even better. She is an amazing young cow that we can’t say enough good about. 108 MPPA, 364-day calving interval, dark cherry red, tidy udder, big middled with a great disposition.

• Granddam 242 is still in production with a calf at side at 14 years of age. She’s a high butter fat content cow with a small tidy udder and terrific feet. Needless to say, we’re flushing her to get more daughters.

• Wow. Thick, stout, deep and proud with a herd bull crest. 501 is not going to be the biggest bull, but he sure might be the thickest bull in your pasture.

Heavy boned and stands down on a large foot. His dam is a smaller framed, great uddered cow we bought from Rhodes down in Faulkton. She’s sired by one of the hottest bulls in the Red Angus breed right now; TAC Drifter H10. She goes back to one of the original cows they started their herd with. Built in longevity here.

Really attractive, smooth made heifer bull. Moderate framed, thick bull with a big hip and stands down on a real good, dark foot.

Dam is moderate but super thick and wide. One of those cows that is always in good flesh. She’s a very attentive mother, which is no surprise as her mother, the 5160 cow never lets her calf out of eyesight.

• Really good bull here which is no surprise as his maternal brother was our high seller last year.

Blood red, explosive hip, high volume, long bodied, good footed bull that strides out like a cat and has a large scrotal circumference.

Dam is a dark red, purebred Simmental cow. She’s on the moderate side for a Simmental cow. Dark black, real nice foot on her and with plenty of maternal instinct.

• Here’s an extremely athletic Epic 397 K calf that is built to cover some country. He’s got a touch more frame, a bit more length and a perfect level top with performance numbers near the top of the sale and maybe the most balanced set of EPD’s. Dam is a dark red, long bodied cow with an awesome udder. She’s a very maternal cow that is ultra-protective of her calf for the first few days after it’s born. A big country cow.

• We did not pull DNA on the 4058 granddam before we flushed her. Therefore, this bull cannot sell with EPD’s. Take a look at the actual data and the physical bull in front of you though, he’s flat good.

Wow. We’ve got a rugged, performance bull here again. He’s a high volume, stout made bull that stands down on a large circumference of bone and carries a big scrotal.

• This is what it looks like when the best Charolais heifer bull your dad has ever owned decides to visit the dam of your Lot 1 bull from last year. As disappointed as we were when this guy was born a buckskin, he has done nothing but gain our admiration ever since.

• No EPD’s since his sire wasn’t DNA’ed. This guy would be a great choice for heifers while not sacrificing any performance. He’s got a big, wide hip, tons of top shape, a deep sweep to his rib and a super sweet disposition.

• Dam is our best cow for cranking out good ones every year, regardless of what she’s bred to. Picture perfect teat size and udder from the minute her calf is born to the time he’s weaned.

• Plenty of calving ease to go along with some impressive weaning and yearling weights. Very well-balanced set of EPD’s as well. 216 is a good young cow that is built the way we like; deep and level designed. She gets her calves up and nursing quick.

• Here’s a bull with a notch more frame and a very attractive profile. He’s a real extended bull that’s got a perfect topline and is up-headed and athletic on the move. Solid numbers that don’t blow you away but are well above average. This is one of our favorite flushes. When you combine Seneca with the 2154 cow, you know every calf is going to be good. As we’ve said earlier, she’s the first cow we flushed and we continue to do so at 14 years of age because this is the kind of calves she produces.

Excellent footed, moderate, deep and thick with a super quiet disposition. Moderate birthweight bull with exceptional rankings for his maternal EPD’s.

• Dam is a smaller six-year-old with a perfect bag and is prepotent at making light birth calves. This is the largest birth weight calf she’s had at 80 pounds.

• Another thick made, rugged built bull with a big hip and huge middle. This guy was born a twin and weaned off lighter but has come on real strong since. His full brother last year was our standout Lot 5 bull that is working over in Litchville, ND.

• The 103G female is a massive, power house cow. She has so much middle and mass while still being super maternal and possessing a very nice udder.

• Real nice bull that is solid all around. He’s very structurally correct with a level topline and a perfect stride that hits his track every time. Very balanced set of numbers and an outcross pedigree with his dam stacking two great Black Angus sires in Colman Regis and Hoover Dam.

• Three full brothers are all working on a big ranch over in Staples, MN. Dam is the 491B cow that is one of our top donors. Her ability to transmit look and power along with her superior maternal instinct and perfect udder make her an easy cow to like.

Moderate birthweight that would be borderline for use on heifers, as his sire has a lot of bone and power. 8407F is nearly flawless in not just her phenotype, but udder and teat structure as well. She’s a high calving ease cow that we are flushing for the first time this year because we are so impressed with her udder and her ability to transmit that phenotype to all her offspring.

• Dam is a lighter red, smaller framed, efficient cow with an excellent teat size.

• He’s the natural calf out of the 491B cow, which makes sense when you take a look at his top end maternal EPD’s. Once again, they don’t make them much better than the 491B cow. She’s got the frame, power, maternal ability and udder quality we’re striving to emulate.

• Dam raised one of our high sellers last year going to Wessington Springs, SD. She got sick on us last summer and that’s reflected in this calf’s lower weaning weight but don’t discount him to hard for that as he’s got the look and pedigree to be a good one. J142 is a huge middled cow with a terrific udder.

This guy reminds us so much of his sire, 34L. He has his same level top, dark head and perfect feet.

• One of the youngest calves in the sale but I wouldn’t doubt if he turns out to be one of the nicest looking mature bulls of the lot. Dam is a nice young Common Sense daughter out of our real good 7019 cow that has raised past high sellers.

Dark red heifer bull that is very athletic and free striding. Canadian pedigree so not all the EPD’s show up here.

• We purchased his dam from MRL up in Canada. She has a great pedigree going back to the great 113Z cow on the top and SAV Net Worth on the bottom. She is only a second calver this year but is maybe our most maternal cow. She is very protective of her calf and always knows where it is in the pasture.

Here’s a moderate birth, black bull that is longer bodied.

• Good weaning ratio and balanced EPD’s. Dam is a black-red carrier with a lot of middle and a nice udder.

Out of the same sire as the Lot 17 bull, this guy should work on heifers as well. Black nose char that is moderate, deep and thick.
