Durhams in the Dakotas 2026

Page 1

GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE 20TH ANNUAL DURHAMS IN THE DAKOTAS SALE!

What a year. As I write this, I can’t help but reflect on what an amazing year it was for the Beef Industry and also JSF. We continue to be humbled by the incredible support we have received and look forward to deepening existing relationships as well as building new ones in 2026.

Building...That’s what we do here. We’ve built a cowherd that I believe can work anywhere. We’ve built bulls that I trust endorsing to do the same. We’ve built a breed all our own in the Ranchers Reds. This past year, propelled by the success of JSF, we built a Bull Stud. How? Sheer persistence and Hard Work. That work has put us on the world stage to where we now host the largest Shorthorn & Shorthorn Influenced Bull and Female Sales in the world. For the last 18 years, we have been a member of the American Shorthorn Associations Century Club, and, for the last 5 consecutive years, we have registered more Shorthorn cattle than any other operation in North America. The other hardest workers here? The cows. They are built to last and through careful selection give us a set of bulls each year that have the genetic tools to be of value to the Beef Industry as creators of outcross, Maternal Heterosis.

Speaking of the bulls, the following pages are laced with some of the best ever born here. Those aren’t just words on a page, but instead what people tell me. Never satisfied, I politely accept the compliment. I welcome your appraisal. There is nothing I love more than showing people what we can do, and these bulls are indeed, proof.

We hope you are able to take time away from your busy schedules to be with us any time prior to or through sale weekend. As always, the gates are open to the Cow Herd and Herd Sires. We would love to show you our operation, the dams of your future Herd Sires, and, how we run our cows. When the clock strikes 6 pm Saturday night, we hope you are there to see what we’ve built. It’s special. It’s America’s First. It’s the birthplace of the Modern Day SHORTHORN. It’s JSF.

DURHAMS FOREVER!

JSF OUTBACK 105N

One of, if not THE best ever to bear the prefix. Big words? Yes. He’s that good, and different.

He’s also your reigning 2025 North Star Classic Supreme Champion Bull Over All Breeds. Slapped by 2 of the best young cattlemen in Canada-Tyson Hertz from Six Mile and Riley LaFrentz from Wheatland-they spoke of how REAL he is—and used him to beat some awfully good big bulls at only 9 mos of age. Outback 105N, a Changer.

to be Announced on or Prior to Sale Day.

JSF KENDRA

306N

RONELLE PARK SLURPIE Sire of Lots 1 - 16

Awesome white brother here in Tamworth that’s really taken off since weaning. Attractive made, soggy, and more moderate for birth. Sydney is an incredibly close match to Melbourne. So much good in these brothers...take your pick and have your Outcross Herd Sire for years to come.

If you have me on Snapchat, I’ve been chirping about this one since his earliest days. This summer mid-July he landed on our Facebook page. His mother is incredible. So is he. We will use this bull here AI in 2026.

RONELLE

Awesome red Slurpie son here in the 6 slot. I have been telling Preston since weaning how much this one continues to grow on me. I expect he will prove heifer safe, too. His mother is one of our best cows...and yet another from the Princess family, same as Outback. Love this bull.

Maternal half brother to Cinnabar, a bull we brought back here to use. You’ll see some sons later here that really speak to the quality of that bull. This dude is just how I named him—a Stockman’s bull. Deep, long, thick... and great at the ground. Herd Sire.

JSF BRISBANE 208N

Maternal half brother to Mercury, one of last years top sellers to Mike Schaeffer in SD and one of the best red bulls I’ve ever raised. This dude is a performance powerhouse. Use him to add length, pounds, and eye appeal to a set of calves.

JSF SLURPIE 158N

Stout set of half brothers here from some of our best cows. Maternal sibs in here to Pale Rider-Herd Sire for Bell M in Canada, Mogul-Herd Sire for Sokoloski’s in MT, another by a great Princess cow, and yet another from a full sib to Wall Street and Times Square. Incredibly stacked materal power here with the Australian record setter Sluripe top side.

As the Slurpies go, this one is a DUDE. Length, power, great head. Bulls like him are the reason Jeff was adamant we had to get Slurpie back here...and also why he named him Slurpie JR. One of the best bulls to ever come from the Deerhorn Cow Herd.

Stout, red, soggy scale crushers here. These bulls are big middled, large scrotaled, and exceptionally sound—just what the Deerhorn cattle are known for and we are so grateful that Jeff is allowing Brock to get his start with cows from there.

JSF SCOTCH 64N

Suitable For Heifers.

Awesome calving ease bull here from one of the best Reincarnation daughters on the planet. Slated for flush duty this next spring, she has earned it the right way, over time, never missing, landing solid ones year after year. I’m glad we got her mated to 50K cuz this guy is a stinger. See him in Denver. Take a run at him in Kathryn. You won’t be wrong.

JSF HUXLEY

Lot 18 Suitable For Heifers.

We love the 50K’s because they do so many things well. Consistent in their type and just don’t miss. Expect more of these in the coming years from here—because they are that good!

Suitable For Heifers.

One of the best calving ease sire prospects we have ever raised. Top 2% for $CEZ & $CPI, top 10% for BMI, all the while sporting a 205 day weight North of 700 lbs. His dam is quickly becoming one of our best young cows, and it’s no surprise as she’s a maternal half sib to Bond, the bull I tried to buy back from Byland. Exceptional Future Herd Sire. #JSF.

JSF GREELEY

JSF DURANGO 260N

Suitable For Heifers.

Great pair of Durango sons here. 260N is a maternal brother to last year’s Mendoza son, Latitude that went to the Raisebecks in WI. 100N was the pick of the bulls last fall for Monty Thomson—his words--he’s just so solid, no holes. Agreed!

This one has been a standout all summer and fall and one of, if not the best red bull on the sale. Many found him Durham Nation weekend. Many more will be in Denver and back at the ranch. His maternal half sib was a top seller on Durham Nation last fall heading to the great Promise Land herd in MT. Another Maternal Sister was selected by JThomas Livestock in TN. Expectation is they found future donors. You’d do well to find your Herd Sire right here in Tau 300N.

Powerful, large scaled Bank Draft from a cow that never misses in 827F having landed Herd Bulls for SharBen in KY and others across the country. This dude is homo polled, long as a trailer, pounds heavy with some stick.

JSF BANK DRAFT 165N

Suitable For Heifers.

Awesome sleep all night Bank Draft x Patty here. His mother is the kind we strive to produce—moderate, easy keeping, feminine, and so sound. This guy will leave you an exceptional set of daughters and has a great disposition to boot.

The Bank Draft heifer calves averaged over 5K on Durham Nation Last Fall. They are the real deal!

CARGO’S SALEM SUE 120L ET

Dam’s Age: 2

Suitable For Heifers.

My. Oh. My...this guy has been a conversation piece since pair checks started when he was a week old...and has stayed that way though the summer. I’ve told Preston more than once he’s the best bull he’s ever raised...and frankly he’s one of the best on the entire sale. Calving ease, coupled with performance, in an incredibly stout featured package, he’s a Dawg alright...Snoop DOGG 32N.

JSF JOE COOL 17K
CARGO’S SNOOP DOGG 32N 27

White, polled, calving ease deluxe right here by Joe Cool. If you need to open up some heifers, take note here. This guy is incredibly good looking, smooth, and, still boasted a weaning weight in the mid-700’s. Rare beast here, coming in CLUTCH.

Suitable For Heifers. Retaining 50% Semen interest.

One of my all-time favorite bulls and very near the top of my list for 2026. I love this one. He is so heavy constructed, yet cat sound & proportional with amazing eye-appeal. AJ says he’s good enough to be a major AI Club Calf sire. Let’s just say he’s cut from that cloth, raised in ranch country, and, his maternal granddam, Maude 14U remains one of my favorite cows of all time. Killer Combo. Killer Look. This is one good prick. #CITATION.

The great natural calf by Preston’s “Auntie” Donor. This guy is long spined, huge bodied, great footed and attractive. He’s making the trip to Denver, and coming out of our white pen this year, that’s saying something! Great mother. Great bull!

In very limited use, Cinnabar did such an awesome job. They all came small, grew good, and are easy to look at. 231N had strong consideration for our Denver pen and is a maternal half sib to the dam of Lot 1. His picture doesn’t show it, but, he’s a stud, as are the pair of Preston’s. Good working page of Cowboy bulls Right here!

Steeped calving ease pedigree right here. This bull has really come on since weaning and is one I know everyone will find in the white pen.

Maternal Half Sib to Bank Draft and one of the most uniquely bred bulls on the sale. See him in our April Bull Pen in Denver. Breeder Bull right here.

CRESTON 314N

JSF ROYALTY 274N

All Suitable For Heifers.

I really love these Royalty’s for what they do...the daughters are soft made, maintaining their flesh while raising a quality calf, and breed back. If you need some half brothers to turn in with a big set of heifers and want to keep everything a deep dark red, go no further. These dudes are just solid. I will make special note of 314N—he absolutely didn’t want to have his picture taken, but, when you see him, you will find him to be awfully good. He could easily be in our pen of April bull calves for Denver. His maternal Half Sib was the top selling Bred on Durham Nation last fall, going to JThomas Livestock in TN and he is of similar quality. Take note and find him in Kathryn, he’s a unique beast!

One of the best Cash sons we’ve ever made. His maternal Granddam has been a donor at Paint Valley in OH. His dam never misses. Great Bull right here. See him in Denver and follow him back to the ranch where you better be ready for a tustle when he hits the block.

Woof...What a Beast...Big body. Big Back. Big Nuts. Heck he’s Big everywhere... and yet pretty as the picture he took. I have a hunch a set of Blue Roan daughters by this bull would make the best Cattlemen’s mouths water. Denver Pen Bull.

Suitable For Heifers.

Roan. Rockin. STUD. Above breed average for 9 of 12 measured traits. 228N is one of the best bulls on the sale and proof of what a Shorthorn BEEF BULL can look like.

Big Outline. Big Look. Big MAN of a Bull...These Cash’s are so good...and the race is on to find the son to take his place. Give this guy a look. He has all the parts and pieces.

Stout featured, Big Legged, Big Backed son of the Byland Money bull, from the great Marvel cow line. His dam has proven her ability to be a Bull Maker, having landed sons at Six’s in PA and for Thompson’s in SD and yet another here in Academy.

Pair of stout Cash sons here. Both bring so much good. 224N is one of the stoutest constructed Cash sons we have raised in terms of circumference of foot and has a full brother currently working in ID. 195N brings Orange Blossom to the table and has been a standout chunk all his days. Thanks Cash...you made so many good ones.

ABOUT BULLS the

The Bulls are raised along the Banks of the Sheyenne & James River Valley systems in ND. These bulls all grow up having to travel for water, forage, and shade. Only the top cut is retained for bulls with serious consideration given to acceptable birth weights, conformation, and overall durability. Once weaned, they are fed for optimum, not maximum gain, in large pens with free choice hay, gradually worked up to a 52mCal ration. This allows the bulls to express their differences genetically without being overly fat. Once yearling weights and scan data is recorded, the bulls are gradually backed down to a 42mCal ration prior to turnout and/or delivery, post a breeding soundness exam.

Set of Blue studs right here with some interesting top sides to make females. Find your color preference, take them them home, and, add maternal heterosis. Once you have that first set of daughters from these, you’ll know why Shorthorn has the momentum it does.

What a UNIT. This bull’s Red, Purebred Simmi Dam is a beauty. Bred to the Bankroll son, Let’s Roll, I was content with a bull or heifer. Had this dude been Red, I wouldn’t be selling him, he would’ve been my next Purebred Simmi step on the Ranchers’ Red side. Since he’s black, he’s available here. You would have to drive a lot of miles to find a better Homo Polled, Purebred, Cool Baldy Simmental Bull. His actual Weaning Weight was 852 lbs and he’s headed for 1400+ at a year to be sure. Herd Sire.

RANCHERS’ REDS the

The bulls on the following pages began as a conversation, now, over 12 years ago, with a lifelong Simmental breeder from just outside Lisbon, ND by the name of Jerry Hieggelke. I had appreciated his cattle, and as it often goes around the Sandhills in SE ND, many cattlemen's herds are heavy with Simmental x Angus influence. I'd heard several of our mutual customers speak well of his bulls. They talked of how they held up without excessive supplement, bred cows, and, most importantly, lasted. They all said "lasted" and my wheels were turning. I had passed that on to him one day and said I'd love to come have a look at his Red Cows sometime. Wheels still turning, I talked to Marty Ropp and told him to be on the lookout for a good Simmi x RA donor. That fall, he called and told me he'd found one, TNT Miss W7 came to Kathryn and we flushed her Shorthorn. The Miss Me's you see today all trace back to her. Back to Jerry—a year went by and then one day, after having gone through some health troubles, he stopped and asked if I'd like to come have a look at the cows. I didn't hesitate. I'm glad I went as we made a deal that day for all of his red cows. The next step, mate them to our Durham Red Bull, SBR Goldenrod 714. Goldenrod 714 was an incredible beast. Sired by the Select Sires bull JSF Goldenrod 57U (another son of the immortal KL Gold Rose 451) and, out of an awesome Buffalo Creek Cherokee Canyon daughter, back to Rick Osterday's Suzy Cow family, which, at the time, may have been the best cow walking in Java. I had the best of ranch country, Shorthorn and Red Angus, ready to wrap back on a set of Simmi's.

Fast forward several years to where we now—have some over 50 Goldenrod 714 daughters in production, most all going back to the Hieggelke cows or W7, now a high % Shorthorn. They are so functional and I believe as good a set of Red Cows as you will find anywhere, regardless of breed composition. The next step, find the right PB Simmental Bulls to mate them to, enhancing growth, without sacrificing what our cattle do well in terms of softness, soundness, and maternal superiority. I leaned on people I trusted and got the tip to AI to IR Imperial and SAS Copperhead. Good move #1. Next, I bet I watched 1000 Simmental bull videos in the spring of 2023, talked to more people I trusted, and, landed on a bull from Rydeen's in MN that I thought could work. Others must have thought so as well because a couple other breeders in ND & IA made me pay 27K that day to own RFS Kaiser K104.

The rest, as they say, is History. The second set of sons from a breed being created just South of Kathryn, ND are here, and a breed it will be. We have already begun the next steps of using a ½ Shorthorn ¼ Red Angus, ¼ Simmental bull back on higher % Simmental females, with the plan of establishing a solid red beast that is approximately ½ Simmental 3/8 Shorthorn 1/8 Red Angus. No one else has them. They are incredibly good. They will fit a variety of environments. They are Ranchers’ Reds and they are poised to make Beef Cattle, better.

****ALL BULLS ARE DUAL REGISTERED SHORTHORNPLUS AND % SIMMENTAL.

Amazing Beast and proof of just how good these cattle are...all from a higher % Shorthorn Dam...tells me what we are doing and striving for is working.

The youngest in the Ranchers Red Offering but perhaps also the best. Love this bull. Great headed, soggy made, the cowman’s kind.

Incredible Individual. Came out at 75 lbs and weighed 1260 the 3rd week of December. Another example what a Shot of Shorthorn can do on your Red Cows. Great bull.

Bulls like this are the reason these Ranchers Reds were so highly sought after and I expect will continue to be. They are so good...stout featured, yet still backed with strong Maternal. A full sib to 105 went to Victoria Tormannaen near Stanley, ND last year. Saw that bull last summer. WOW. To say they are satisfied with their Ranchers Reds would be an understatement.

Lots 109 & 111 Suitable For Heifers.

What a group of bulls. Study their data, videos, and, make your selection. When they come off cows next fall, you won’t believe how well they held up. Next will come their calves. Then their daughters...and you will fully realize just how good these cattle are.

MISS DRIVER 3861

Dam’s Age: 12

Lots 112 & 114 Suitable For Heifers.

Deep from one end to the other, literally. Maternal combined with acceptable performance, in solid red packages, ready to go to work. 112 might be the longest spined bull on the entire sale. 113 has no holes and is incredibly sound, built to last. 114 is a CHUNK and delivers calving ease coupled with solid performance. 115 didn’t take the best picture, but, I’d buy that bull and keep every daughter. His dam, 3861 is one of the original foundation Simmi’s and has left us so many great daughters.
