Restoring the Hill

Studio II

"Designed as a living memorial that brings memory and future together"

Restoring the Hill is designed as a living memorial that brings memory and future together. The middle facade presents a concrete cast impression of the original Vinegar Hill map, turning the lost neighborhood into a tactile surface of memory. The glass behind it reveals the interior, a glimpse into the creative future for Charlottesville. The visual layering connects what was to what could be, with the intent to merge past and possibility all in one frame.

Restoring the Hill begins with a truth seen in many cities across the United States: Black neighborhoods being removed or pushed aside, even when they’re full of life and community. Charlottesville followed this same pattern. In the early and mid-1900s, many areas close to downtown were home to large Black populations, with Vinegar Hill being one of the strongest and most important of these neighborhoods. It was a place filled with Black-owned homes, shops, churches, and families who built their lives there. In 1964, more than 140 homes and businesses were destroyed, and residents were forced out; this not only erased buildings but also an entire community’s history, support system, and sense of belonging.

Flight & Frame

Studio II

"A shared habitat where architecture frames coexistence between artistic practice and migratory wildlife."

Flight & Frame reimagines the artist’s studio as a shared habitat, one that protects and celebrates th life it observes. This retreat allows an artist to photograph, and live among migratory birds without disturbing their fragile environment.
