'My Music Journey' Malcolm Mok Piano Recital

Page 1

Dear guests and friends of Malcolm,

It is my great honour to welcome you all to this delightful concert at St John’s Cathedral this evening.

Within this historic building, people have gathered over a hundred and fifty years, perhaps to sing praises to the goodness that God has created, or perhaps to quietly reflect in a moment of contemplative prayer. Tonight, we gather for a unique and no less joyful type of sound: a journey in music with Malcolm Mok.

Those who are regulars at St John’s would not be unfamiliar with Malcolm, who has been a constant here since young, when he attended Sunday School. Watching him grow from a young boy to the gifted young man he is today is truly a privilege to all of us who call St John’s our spiritual home. Indeed, many of us might have already caught a glimpse of today’s concert — as it is the cherished musical voice of Malcolm that is heard by us all on the piano inside the Li Hall after the weekly Sunday 9AM service!

We are all children of God, who created us with diverse and colourful gifts. For Malcolm, this is the gift to speak most clearly not with words, but with music. This is no easy path in life, and many would have given up when faced with the unspeakable challenges along the way, but with the talent, courage, and perseverance of Malcolm, together with the most admirable support from his mother Monica, and all his teachers and friends, he has achieved such exemplary and respectable heights.

Tonight, as Malcolm shares his journey and music with us, I invite you all to listen not only to the notes, but to the man behind the keys as well. May the harmonies thus heard be a reminder to us all that true harmony can exist when we embrace and support each other despite our apparent shortcomings, honouring the diverse ways in which we are all made.

A heartfelt thank you to Malcolm, for sharing your gift of music with us. We are immensely proud of you. May God bless you all as we enjoy this evening of music and harmonious fellowship.

The Government has always been committed to fostering an inclusive society. Through the “Arts Development Fund for Persons with Disabilities”, we provide dedicated support for persons with disabilities to pursue development in the cultural and artistic arena, encouraging them to showcase their talents and realise their potential through the arts. We also proactively establish diverse platforms that enable artists with disabilities to shine on broader stages.

In the past two years, Malcolm was invited to perform at the “Diversity and Inclusion Arts Festival” organised by the Labour and Welfare Bureau, where he demonstrated his remarkable skills on professional stages. His refined and sincere piano playing has moved many audiences and received enthusiastic acclaim. This evening’s performance fully demonstrates Malcolm’s growing confidence as a young pianist. We look forward to seeing more talented artists, like Malcolm, excel not only in the arts but also in the workplace.

Promoting social inclusion is not merely a policy; it requires concerted efforts of all sectors. Let us take the arts as a starting point to unite our strengths and make Hong Kong a diverse, inclusive, and vibrant city. Like Malcolm, may every individual find their own shining stage.

I wish this evening’s concert every success. Good show, Malcolm!

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and cherished friends,

It is my great honour to welcome you all this evening to a truly special occasion — the solo recital of Malcolm Mok. Tonight, we gather not only to celebrate music, but also to celebrate resilience, love, and the extraordinary power of human spirit.

This concert holds deep personal meaning for me. As the title sponsor, I have chosen to dedicate part of my father’s estate to make this event possible. My father was a man defined by selflessness and a willingness to help others. His legacy reminds me that true greatness lies not in what we achieve for ourselves, but in what we give to others. It is in his honour that we come together tonight, to support and uplift a remarkable young talent.

I’ve known Malcolm since he was a toddler. Our two families have been close friends for over 20 years, and we’ve remained in touch through all of life’s ups and downs.

So it brings me immense joy to share that Malcolm has been awarded a development fund by Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong and Lee Hysan Foundation. Well done, Malcolm. A huge congratulations.

Malcolm’s journey is a testament to the beauty that emerges when determination meets opportunity. But behind every extraordinary child stands extraordinary love. I want to take a moment to recognise and praise his mother, Monica. Her dedication, patience, and unwavering commitment to nurturing Malcolm’s talent have made tonight possible. Monica, your devotion is a beacon of hope and a reminder of the boundless strength of a mother’s love.

As the music begins, let us open our hearts — not only to the melodies we will hear, but to the stories they carry. Let us honour the legacy of generosity, celebrate the triumph of perseverance, and embrace the joy of shared humanity.

Thank you for being here tonight. May this concert inspire us all to give, to support, and to believe in the extraordinary potential within each of us.

Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong

Art magically unites disparate lives, while music transcends language and experience to connect human hearts. Tonight, we are profoundly moved to witness Malcolm step onto his very own stage for this solo piano recital.

As Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong (ADAHK) celebrates its 40th anniversary, we remain steadfast in our vision: “Arts for Everyone”. Through our “Cross All Borders” (CAB) programme, we are dedicated to discovering and nurturing emerging artists with disabilities. We have seen participants break through physical and mental barriers, demonstrating boundless creativity. By offering professional mentorship and training, we empower these artists to elevate their craft and advance fealessly on their artistic journeys.

Our paths crossed with Malcolm during the CAB competition, where his impressive skills and pure passion for music shone through. The dedication he pours into the piano keys demonstrates a remarkable resilience capable of overcoming any obstacle. We firmly believe that artistic growth requires long-term cultivation.

Thanks to the unwavering support of Lee Hysan Foundation and the “Artists with Disability Development Fund”, Malcolm received a precious opportunity to study under two internationally renowned pianists, Michelle Kim and Niu Niu (Zhang Shengliang). Guided by his mentors, Malcolm has transformed countless hours of arduous practice into a true metamorphosis in his musical artistry.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our concert sponsors and supporters: Madame Amy Tsang, Archbishop Andrew Chan, Parsons Music, The Coffee Academics, HL Marketing, and all generous donors. Your contributions that have made tonight’s magnificent performance possible.

As the music begins, we warmly invite you to listen closely to the story Malcolm tells through his playing. May tonight’s performance resonate deeply with you, and we look forward to continuing our journey together to ensure the talents of artists with disabilities shine brightly for all to see.

Ms Monica Cheung MESSAGE

Mother of Malcolm Mok

Distinguished guests and my dearest friends,

My warmest welcome and heartfelt gratitude to you all. Thank you so much for taking time to join us this evening for Malcolm’s recital at St John’s Cathedral — an important occasion that marks a new and exciting chapter in his music journey.

It is our greatest honour to hold this concert at St John’s Cathedral, the grandest Christian home in Hong Kong. This venue has always been our first choice, not only for its architectural splendour, but more importantly because Malcolm and our family have come to this magnificent church for Sunday School and worship services for over twenty years. For an individual on the autism spectrum, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings can be profoundly challenging. To Malcolm, St John’s Cathedral is more than a preferred concert venue; it is a place as familiar and comforting as a home away from home.

Malcolm and I wish to express our deepest gratitude to the Most Reverend Andrew Chan, Archbishop of the Hong Kong Anglican Church, for his kindest patronage.

My brother in Christ, Alexander, encouraged me to seek the patronage of Archbishop. While Themis, Archbishop’s sister, has been my lifelong best friend, and her son Gary is one of Malcolm’s two-three closest friends in the world — so Archbishop has watched Malcolm grow up. Still, I was far too shy to ask. In fact, it was Madame Sarah Chan, Archbishop’s wife, who took the initiative to suggest Archbishop be the honorary patron. I cannot thank Archbishop and Sarah enough for this extraordinary honour and their kindest support. I was moved to tears of gratitude while reading the Archbishop’s touching and exceptionally gracious foreword in the programme.

I have also earnestly begged Sarah to pray for Malcolm on stage this evening, as Malcolm’s spiritual mother.

As Jesus promised, if two of us ask together for anything, it will be done for them by God. Now two mothers are asking for God’s blessings on their son, Father God will be there guiding Malcolm’s hands on stage. (Mathew 18:19)

金美雪大師與牛牛(張勝量)大 師——梓源敬愛的師傅及本音樂會 顧問,他們以仁愛之心教育梓源這 個不肖徒兒,甚在我們困乏的時候 願意不收學費無償無私指導梓源, 帶領他踏上舞台,在音樂旅途上一 步一腳印悉心指引;

我的閨中密友曾鳳嫻女士,乃 今晚音樂會的冠名贊助人,萬 分感激她主動提出慷慨贊助;

康復專員姜梁詠怡女士,JP,感謝 她分享政府在共融藝術發展方面 的努力及支持;

柏斯音樂集團總裁吳雅玲女士, 以及在柏斯音樂紅磡選琴中心朝 夕相見的 吳雅清 女士,梓源的鋼 琴贊助及音樂旅程中至關重要的 同行夥伴;

趙曾學韞博士,JP,趙博士於2020 年委任梓源為善學慈善基金大使, 給予他無條件的愛護與珍貴的演 出機會;

Malcolm and I also extend our sincere gratitude to the Lee Hysan Foundation as well as the Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong, for awarding Malcolm the development fund in 2026. Without this unwavering support, Malcolm would not have the opportunity to continue his master classes on a regular basis.

Special gratitude also goes to:

The Very Revd Kwok-keung Chan, Dean of St John’s Cathedral, for his kind presence this evening, and for his constant loving blessings and prayers for Malcolm.

Maestro Michelle Kim and Maestro Niu Niu (Zhang Shengliang), Malcolm’s beloved masters with heart of gold, and consultants of the concert this evening. Even in times of our hardship, they were willing to forgo tuition fees, selflessly educating Malcolm with patience and love, leading him toward performance opportunities, and accompanying him step by step along his music journey.

Madame Amy Tsang, my buddy-bestie, the title sponsor and gracious host of this concert. I cannot express enough gratitude for her volunteering such generous sponsorship.

Mrs. Winnie Kang, JP, Commissioner for Rehabilitation, Labour and Welfare Bureau for sharing the Government’s ongoing efforts and support in the development of inclusive arts;

President Arling Ng and Madame Candy Ng of Parsons Music, Malcolm’s piano sponsor and treasured companions throughout his music journey;

Dr. Alice Chiu, JP, who appointed Malcolm as the Ambassador of Sheen Hok Charity Foundation since 2020, surrounding him with unconditional love and treasured performance opportunities; and

Mr. Alex Lee, renowned DJ and our very important MC and narrator this evening. I am also a devoted fan of Alex and his celebrated long-running RTHK programme “Made in Hong Kong 李志剛”.

I recently shared in an interview that during all those years when I drove Malcolm to school and to countless therapy appointments, I would retreat to the small cabin of my car during the waiting hours — often alone and slipping into self-pity. It was the programmes of Alex and RTHK Radio 2 that kept me company and comforted my heart and soul.

And zillions thanks to our corporate sponsors and supporters: The Coffee Academics, David Yurman, and Hugo Lam of HL Marketing.

I am also deeply grateful to Ms. Monica Chen and Dr. Christina Tse. Because of their generosity in providing me us comfortable living spaces in Taiwan and Hong Kong, Malcolm and I can have the precious luxury of continuing this music journey.

My wholehearted gratitude goes out to every cherished friend who has held Malcolm’s hand and walked beside him on this music journey. Malcolm and I are deeply indebted, and we will carry that gratitude with us always.

Classical piano music is governed by strict conventions that a pianist must honour; personal expression must be built upon the precise requirements laid out by composers in the scores. It is not like painting or other art forms where accomplishments can spring from improvisation and free spirit. For a child like Malcolm, who faces learning difficulties, the road of classical piano is full of thorns and obstacles.

Father God has assigned Malcolm and me a challenging life journey. We accept it with thankful hearts and will do our utmost to persevere. With Father God’s guidance and the companionship of all of you, Malcolm will find his way.

I wish you all good health, love, joy, and peace. May Father God bless each and every one of you and with you always.

Psalm 127:1-2

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.

Programme Note

The opening repertoire Malcolm presented is: Liszt’s Transcendental Étude No. 12, S.139 Chasse-neige

Just by its name, this repertoire sounds like a “martial arts secret manual” – some kung fu skills only a fighter with “unparalleled ability” could master. Indeed this repertoire holds great significance for Malcolm because it is a milestone marking a new chapter in Malcolm's music journey.

In 2026, Malcolm was granted the Artists with Disability Development Fund by Lee Hysan Foundation and Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong. With such support, Malcolm is able to attend a two-year master class programme with Maestro Michelle and Mastro Niu Niu to pursue a material advancement in piano skills.

In January this year, in the very first master class, funded by the above-said scholarship, with Maestro Michelle, Malcolm sought Master’s guidance to refine the performance of this repertoire.

In fact, as early as 2023, Maestro Michelle had boldly selected this piece, which is “difficult at first listen”, for Malcolm. But after only two to three pages, Malcolm’s family was struck by a devastating upheaval — his father passed away suddenly, throwing the family from the castle in the air to a swamp. With no one to depend on, Malcolm and his mother were left adrift, homeless.

Although both Maestro Michelle and Maestro Niu Niu kind-heartedly offered to continue teaching Malcolm for free, Monica could not bring herself to accept lessons indefinitely without paying tuition fee. Compounding this, the lack of a stable home, frequent relocations, and the absence of a piano to practice on meant that Malcolm had only managed to learn a quarter of Chasse-neige before his studies came to a halt.

Later, Monica’s close friends — Dr. Christina Tse and Ms. Monica Chen — kindly provided Malcolm and Monica with rent-free places to stay in Hong Kong and Taipei, respectively until now.

Madame Pollyanna Chu, Founder of Kingston Financial Group, along with a group of close friends, gave Monica a large sum of cash to solve her immediate financial difficulties.

Parsons Music also allowed Malcolm to use the practice room with a grand piano at their Piano Selection Centre in Hung Hom, free of charge. Gradually, mother and son began to find their footing.

Monica then set about teaching Malcolm the repertoire herself, practicing with him bar by bar and page by page, meticulously following the score until they had roughly worked their way through this romantic and beautiful Chasse-neige. In this year's master classes, Maestro Michelle began guiding Malcolm toward refining the performance with greater detail and depth.

In Monica’s eyes, the very fact that Malcolm can play this "transcendental" étude is, in itself, "surreal and beyond imagination”, while she acknowledges that his current performance still has considerable room for improvement. She hopes that when Malcolm plays it again at his graduation concert two years from now, it will come closer to meeting Maestro Michelle’s expectations.

In fact, when it comes to learning classical piano music, Malcolm definitely lost at the starting line — and lost terribly.

Because the brain development of children with autism is atypical, they often cannot “cross the midline” – meaning their left and right hands can only perform similar movements, not distinct actions simultaneously. The basic piano skills of “drawing a circle with the left hand and a square with the right” as well as “right hand playing louder when doing theme and left hand softer when accompanying” are already major challenges.

Individuals on the autism spectrum often experience significant challenges with hand-eye, hand-foot, and fine motor coordination. Delicate piano performance requires precise, independent control of force in each finger, while pedal usage demands simultaneous coordination of both hands and both feet. These two fundamental motor skills pose an exceptionally steep challenge.

Rhythm and tempo proved equally formidable. Most if not all autistic individuals experience atypical temporal and spatial perception. Even before approaching the expressive freedom of rubato, concepts such as accelerando, ritardando, and a-tempo remained stubbornly unintelligible to Malcolm for a very long time.

Layered atop these motor and temporal hurdles are profound challenges in language comprehension and expression, coupled with severe learning disabilities. For Malcolm, the act of understanding and interpreting a score, mastering the requisite technique, and then finally express it with delicacy and emotional depth, i.e. the full arc of performance, becomes, for Malcolm, an undertaking best described as an "impossible mission."

The sole bridge across these obstacles lies in his mother's sustained, daily presence at his side, persistently guiding Malcolm through practice and repetition, until the music is absorbed into "muscle memory."

Malcolm will now perform Chopin's Revolutionary Étude for you all, the first Chopin piece he ever learnt.

The Revolutionary Étude marks a major milestone in Malcolm's music journey. With this very piece, he won the Grand Award of "Cross All Borders" Competition from the Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong for 2020/2021, earning him the title of ADAHK Pianist and the unwavering companionship and support of the Association ever since.

At a charity gala where he shared the stage with Maestro Lang Lang, Malcolm performed this étude. On that occasion, Maestro Jaap van Zweden, BBS, Music Director and Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, praised Malcolm in front of Lang Lang and all the guests, remarking that his music was pure and beautiful, and that he played better than many pianists. His words were an immense encouragement to both Malcolm and his mother.

Malcolm's music journey began one day when his mother took fruit stickers—pear, banana, apple, orange—for d-r-m-f-s and placed them on a sheet of A4 paper as a score. She then placed matching stickers on the piano keys. Together with little threeyear-old Malcolm, they played a game of "spot the match," guiding his index finger to poke out the melody of Mozart's "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."

From poking out "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" to performing “Chasse Neigh” and “Revolutionary Étude” on stage — two works widely regarded as among the most challenging piano repertoires — this is the fruit of Malcolm's dedication and hard work over more than a decade. We hope you enjoy it.

First Encounter with Chopin in My Music Journey

d-d-s-s-l-l-s f-f-m-m-r-r-d

Chopin's Étude in C minor, Op. 10 No. 12 Revolutionary

Malcolm's mother holds his first teacher, Mr. Mark Chai, in deep respect and admiration.

Mark was remarkably courageous. After barely a year of lessons, he boldly embarked on teaching a seven-year-old child with autism, one who could neither speak nor comprehend his teacher's words, the extraordinarily difficult Chopin's Revolutionary Étude. Malcolm essentially bypassed all elementary repertoires, leaping directly into material at the Grade 8 or diploma level.

Mark's reasoning was simple — but weird — whether the piece was easy or difficult, Malcolm wouldn't get it anyway, so why not just learn the difficult one?

Malcolm could not read music scores. During lessons, Mark would take Malcolm's small hand in his own, pressing his finger on the piano key note by note, bar by bar, again and again, repeating until Malcolm remembered.

Malcolm's attention span was exceptionally short, and he would frequently attempt to escape mid-lesson. Mark joked that every piano lesson felt like wrestling with Malcolm, and it was fortunate he was a fitness enthusiast and a daily gym-goer — only that gave him the strength to keep Malcolm pinned beside the piano.

After each lesson, Malcolm and his Tigress Mom would practice those few measures together day after day until the following week's session — when Mark and Malcolm would once again engage in hand-overhand practice and human-versus-human wrestling.

It took this trio well over a year or two just to roughly learn a single three-to-four-minute Chopin étude. Only after years of sustained, accompanied practice could Malcolm eventually play with the fluid, effortless technique one hears today.

Yet even after playing it, he forgets.

This past March, Maestro Michelle brought Malcolm to the stage at the “Hong Kong Generation Next Association Music is Power" Symposium, to performing this very étude — one he has played for over a decade.

Malcolm had reviewed the piece with both Maestro Michelle and Maestro Niu Niu prior to several competitions and performances.

But during the preparatory lesson before the March performance, after listening to Malcolm play the piece through, Maestro Michelle fell silent for quite a moment. Her face then registered that expression of “long suffering sigh made visible”, as if to say, “Oh my goodness! How has he forgotten the things I taught him again?!"

And yet, Maestro Michelle immediately and patiently set about correcting Malcolm's mistakes, one by one, with meticulous care. On the day of the performance, the speaker in the Symposium was none other than Mrs. Aaltje van Zweden, wife of Maestro Jaap van Zweden. Like her husband before her, she praised Malcolm warmly, bringing this piece's journey to a fitting and memorable full circle.

In truth, every piece performed on stage embodies the "effort," "never giving up," and "perseverance" of every mentor, his mother, and Malcolm himself — together making the impossible mission possible.

Here is another little story that Malcolm's mother loves to share:

After the very first lesson, Mark flatly refused to continue teaching Malcolm, his reason being "hopeless." The mother found this assessment hard to swallow, though she had to concede it was not entirely groundless.

Still, the Tigress Mom insisted on "never give in, never give up." She resorted to a small stratagem, proposing that Mark teach two lessons — one for her, and one for Malcolm — offering him double lessons for double pay. As a further gesture of sincerity, she personally chauffeured the teacher to and from the lessons. After a little over a month, once Mark and Malcolm had grown accustomed to each other's presence, the mother quietly excused herself and slipped away. Being a piano coach accompanying practices was exhausting enough; she had no desire to remain a student.

Very soon, Mark and Malcolm's father, Mansfield, became close friends, and the lessons continued

"Come rain or shine" is no exaggeration. Once, during a Typhoon Signal No. 10, a massive tree in front of the family’s house was uprooted by the gale, blocking all vehicular access. Suddenly the doorbell rang — it was Mark. He had trekked through the howling storm from his home in Happy Valley, wearing a transparent plastic raincoat, climbing the steep slopes of Deep Water Bay Road on foot, and scrambling over the fallen tree to reach the Mok residence for the lesson. Such unyielding dedication to teaching commands profound respect.

After many years of piano lessons, Monica asked Mark one day, whether Malcolm was still "hopeless." Mark paused, momentarily stunned. After a brief silence, he said: "He is marvelous!"

Time has flown by. The long journey from "Hopeless" to "Marvelous" feels as vivid as if it happened only yesterday.

As a baby and toddler, Malcolm was utterly captivated by Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu. Every single day, he would listen to it tirelessly, over and over, more than a dozen times — never growing tired of it.

It was precisely this obsession of Malcolm's that Monica started considering to teach him the piano. It was a legacy to be passed down, just as Monica's grandmother had taught her father to play the piano, and her father had taught Monica.

Last year, in October 2025, when Malcolm performed this piece at the opening ceremony of Fu Hong Society's Art Hub, Maestro Niu Niu — amidst his whirlwind global concert schedule — took the time to record a special teaching video for Malcolm, patiently explaining, demonstrating, and instructing him section by section on the Fantaisie-Impromptu.

In this year's master classes, Malcolm has again worked with Maestro Niu Niu to refine and polish this very piece.

Now, Malcolm will perform the piece that has been his lifelong favorite since childhood — Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu in C-sharp minor, Op. 66.

The theme of the first half of the programme is "First Encounters with Chopin on the Music Journey."

To conclude this half, Malcolm will perform Chopin's "Heroic Polonaise”.

Like Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu, this piece is also Malcolm's favourite.

During this year's master classes with Maestro Niu Niu, this was the piece they spent most of the time reviewed and refined.

In their first session, after Malcolm had finished playing the piece for Maestro Niu Niu, the Maestro drew a sharp intake of breath and fell silent for a long while. Then, much like Maestro Michelle before him, his face registered that same “long suffering sigh made visible” expression. One can hardly blame Malcolm, for when his mother learned this piece as a child, she too played it in utter chaos and never truly mastered it.

Maestro Niu Niu, of course, then proceeded with equal patience to point out, one by one, a whole series of corrections Malcolm needed — every single one targeting Malcolm's Achilles' heels or weakest spots.

These included rhythm, pedal work, and phrasing. The Maestro demonstrated each element meticulously, emphasizing that Malcolm must lift his hands away from the keys to create the phrasing; only then could the distinctive character of a polonaise emerge.

Faithfully obeying their master’s instructions, mother and son returned home to practice.

Yet, after four days, seven-hour practice each day, the phrasing remained out of reach. In particular, there was a passage of just thirteen notes, meant to be phrased in groups of three to four notes. Even after countless rounds of hand-over-hand guidance from his mother, Malcolm still could not execute it. The thirteen notes emerged as a scrambled jumbo — the phrases would not separate.

As mentioned, a common challenge for individuals on the autism spectrum is poor coordination between hands and feet. Malcolm simply could not master the seemingly straightforward action of "foot on pedal, hand lifting off."

Finally, as if guided by Father God, inspiration suddenly struck the mother. She told Malcolm that after playing each phrase, he should lightly touch the back of his hand to the raised edge of the open piano lid. With this, Malcolm was at last able to achieve the phrasing technique.

Overcoming each hurdle slowly, one by one — such is the daily reality of Malcolm's practice.

Just a few days ago, Maestro Niu Niu had barely stepped off a plane from a North American concert tour when he came to give Malcolm a lesson in preparation for this concert. After listening to Malcolm play the piece again, the Maestro fell silent for quite a moment again, then remarked simply and evenly, "Hmm. At least he could complete the song.”

He then proceeded to highlight another crucial area requiring significant improvement — dynamic control between the left and right hands. This, too, is another of Malcolm's pronounced weak spots, due to the symptom of difficulty in crossing midline as outlined previously.

And what was even more difficult was that Maestro Niu Niu wants Malcolm to develop the habit — when pressing down all fingers together for a chord, striking slightly harder with the right-hand little finger (or whichever finger carrying the melody) in order to bring out the principal voice within the chord. This time, it was the mother’s turn to have that “Oh my goodness” expression on her face. This was truly Malcolm’s most fatal weakness among all fatal weaknesses.

Both Maestro Michelle and Maestro Niu Niu actually hold rather high expectations for Malcolm. One makes him perform a virtuosic 'secret martial arts manual,' while the other wants him to unlock the Achilles' heel of Achilles' heels. To play well enough to earn the maestros' satisfaction, Malcolm still has a great deal of hard work ahead of him."

Now, please enjoy the fruit of Malcolm's dedicated practice over these past several months — Chopin's Polonaise in A-flat major, Op. 53 Heroic (the Polonaise Héroïque).

Intermission

Second Session of the Concert — Ongoing Music Journey

Malcolm has just performed Rachmaninov's Prelude in G Minor, Op. 23 No. 5.

On his second appearance at Government House, he played this rhythmically driving and delightfully quirky piece for then-Chief Executive Mrs. Carrie Lam and an assembly of distinguished guests — a beautiful wedding anniversary gift for his parents.

This repertoire too, presented Malcolm with an "impossible mission." In the lyrical middle section, two melodies engage in a kind of dialogue, one answering the other in call and response, while the accompaniment weaves beneath them. Together, they demand that two hands produce the effect of three.

After Michelle’s patient guidance and Mother-andson’s countless practices, a little theatre of the mind began to take shape in Monica’s imagination. In it, a cute monster yet with evil intentions invites a boy to dance, mesmerizes him, and lures him away into another world. In the end, both boy and beast vanish into thin air, being swept away in a whirlwind. Monica drew this very story as a sketch to help Malcolm understand the music, and the drawing has been included in the digital programme to share with all.

Next, Malcolm will perform Ren Guang's Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon. Maestro Niu Niu advised that the piece should convey the joy and lively spirit of the Mid-Autumn Festival—families reuniting, moon gazing, eating mooncakes, and playing with lanterns. This interpretation, he felt, is far more suited to Malcolm's natural disposition, freeing him from the constraints of a more conventionally serene approach.

Even so, this piece is exceptionally difficult for Malcolm — not only because it is a lyrical work, but also because the middle section demands a technical feat of constantly shifting dynamics between the left and right hands.

Through intensive drilling, Malcolm's hand coordination has markedly improved. With this repertoire, Malcolm won the Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong's Grand Award for the second time in 2023/24. It is a hard-won reward, earned through effort drenched in both sweat and tears.

Malcolm's father, Mansfield, took the great pleasure in signing Malcolm up for all manners of piano competitions, using them as encouragement or motivation for Malcolm to practice diligently. The Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong's competition in 2023/24 was the very last assignment his father ever gave him. Sadly, Dad can no longer be there as photographer and cheerleader; he will never again see Malcolm enter a competition, nor watch him win.

In early 2023, while Malcolm was learning Liszt's Chasse-neige and Chopin's Heroic Polonaise, his father passed away suddenly, departing without a word of farewell. Malcolm and his mother lost their dearest love in an instant. Bereft and anchorless, they were plunged into a state of utter displacement. No home. No grand piano. No master classes, and no lessons with Mark.

Mother and son, who had once walked among the clouds, now found themselves mired in mud. They were living through the darkest days of their lives — homeless, rootless, struggling even to meet basic needs, let alone to carve out space for a piano or for music.

Yet in the midst of this, they were not alone. They were upheld by the companionship of Dr. Christina Tse, Ms. Monica Chen, and all other dearest and greatest friends, and Parsons Music. Through their kindness, mother and son were not left to face the silence and solitude by themselves. They were still able to dwell in the consoling world of music, allowing their wounded hearts the time and space to slowly mend and heal.

Out of their profound kindness as well as deep compassion and love for Malcolm, both Maestro Michelle Kim and Maestro Niu Niu offered free master classes prior to competitions and performances. Because of them, Malcolm's musical life has continued to grow and flourish.

The gratitude both mother and son feel is etched indelibly upon their hearts.

At his father's farewell, Malcolm played Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata second movement, a piece steeped in sorrow, yet brimming still with hope.

In this year's lessons with Maestro Niu Niu, Malcolm began learning a new piece : Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor. His mother Monica has interpreted Chopin's longing for his Polish homeland in terms that Malcolm can grasp and feel — the pain of losing his father, the ache of missing him, the tender hold of memory.

Yet even in grief, there is peace. As Christians, we hold fast to the understanding that death is but a temporary parting.

The next repertoire is the beloved and widely known Ren Guang's Yellow River Piano Concerto (arr. Niu Niu), first movement, The Song of Yellow River Boatmen.

Special Thanks

The two-piano version of this concerto was adapted by Maestro Niu Niu in section 8 into a solo piano format. Malcolm has also previously performed the third movement of the Yellow River Concerto — “Yellow River Wrath" — with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre which was shared on the Youtube (search key words: Malcolm Mok - yellow river).

Malcolm has been extraordinarily fortunate to receive guidance from both Maestro Michelle and Maestro Niu Niu for this repertoire. Even more remarkably, he has been honoured with instruction from the composer of this very piece, Maestro Yin Chengzong himself.

Maestro Yin Chengzong once served as a visiting professor at The Juilliard School. Both Maestro Michelle and Maestro Niu Niu are graduates of this world-renowned conservatory. In fact, during Maestro Michelle’s time at Juilliard, it was Maestro Yin Chengzong personally who taught her how to perform this concerto.

This rousing and vibrant work has become one of Malcolm's favorite pieces to perform on stage.

He played it during his appearance on the TVB programme Po Leung Kuk Gala Spectacular. Here, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Jenny Tam, Chairperson of Po Leung Kuk, for giving Malcolm the precious opportunity to step onto such a grand stage for Po Leung Kuk Gala Spectacular.

Once again, our heartfelt gratitude to you for everything.
