OCTOBER 4TH-10TH IS NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK. In 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) named the second week of October Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. Today, we celebrate Fire Prevention Week and Month by raising fire safety awareness and educating families, students and communities across the United States. During this month, fire departments provide education to their communities, and encourage parents and loved ones to practice fire safety and whole home safety. The NFPA’s 2020 campaign for Fire Safety Month is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. The focus is on being ready for the unexpected by making sure that all of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in good working order. Those are the first line of defense. Also, be sure to have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and familiarize yourself with how to use it. You should also have an escape plan in place in case the worst should happen. I
s there anyone who doesn’t love fried chicken? We’re all familiar with KFC, Colonel Sanders, and the iconic bucket, and most of us probably know how their chicken lives up to the “finger lickin’ good” slogan. We pine for those flaky biscuits, and argue about which is better: Extra Crispy or Original Recipe. KFC is an American Institution that most of us grew up with, and it just so happens to be the second largest restaurant chain in the world! It would seem that a company operating on such a large scale would be out of touch with consumers, but that’s not the case with KFC. As a franchise, it puts control of each location into the hands of local owners, giving them a greater ability to meet their customers’ needs. Owners like Katie Roberts and her family, who oversee our local KFC here in Woodburn. To them, this is so much more than just a franchise business. For decades now, working in a local fast food joint has essentially been a rite of passage of sorts for many teenagers. In my day, we called it “doing time” because it was not always a positive work experience, and that basically sums up the stereotype of the average fast food job. So in talking to Katie, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that their approach is completely different. Katie has taken great care to set guidelines and establish a management team to run things like a locally-owned family business rather than a big chain. David Vitela, the manager of our Woodburn location, actually started with KFC as a teenager and so loved being part of this team that he made a career out of it. He has

worked hard to mentor his team and engender an atmosphere of support for all employees, regardless of their career goals. Katie and David both have a sincere passion for the work they are doing and the team they have built, and it’s all reflected in the attitudes of their employees and the high level of customer service they provide. When it comes to the food, there’s a reason that when you think of fried chicken, you think of KFC. hat’s better than rescuing dogs in need? Doing it in a way that also helps rescue people! Every once in a while you come across an organization that you didn’t know existed, but you wish you could tell the whole world about. Project POOCH, Inc. is a non-profit dog rescue and youth program located on site at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, and it is definitely an organization the whole world should know about.

for troubled youth. The correctional facility (working in conjunction with the Oregon Youth Authority) houses up to 271 male youths aged 12-24 at any given time. During their incarceration, they attend classes for regular schooling while also learning how to take responsibility for their actions through various programs, treatment and support, with the ultimate goal of reformation and reintegration into society.
Everyone deserves a second chance ... none more so than kids and dogs.
The concept is simple and yet uniquely brilliant in its inception. Founded in 1993, Project POOCH is the brainchild of Joan Dalton, who at the time was vice principal at MacLaren’s Lord High School. On one side of the coin, it’s a straightforward dog rescue program that focuses primarily on taking in more troubled dogs from other shelters, the ones who’ve been there for extended periods of time due to physical or behavioral issues that have kept them from being adopted, and who are at a higher risk of being euthanized.

There’s an old adage that “idle hands are the devil’s plaything.” The youth at the facility need to stay busy, focus on meaningful work, and fill their time constructively. The dogs, with their physical and/or behavioral problems need training from someone who has time to focus on them. Project POOCH is the method to accomplish both, and it’s a match made in Heaven!
Being in the program means working an actual full-time job. The youth have to be 18 to apply, and those who are accepted become employees earning an honest wage (often the money they earn is put into a trust fund to be used for living expenses once they are released).
Through the work in the program, they learn interpersonal skills, responsibility, time management, and every other aspect of carrying a real job. One of the 2 kennel managers pairs the dogs and the youths based on personality, and each employee works 40 hour weeks training, grooming and taking care of their dogs, with the goal of getting them ready for adoption. The youth work especially hard at training, and many of the dogs even earn their Canine Good Citizen achievement. This 10-step test is used as a training guideline and ensures that each dog knows their basic commands and has generally learned good behavior. Many of the youth build such strong relationships with the dogs and gain so much relevant work experience through this process that after leaving MacLaren they go on to find work as animal trainers, groomers, or veterinary technicians. Sadly, for many of these youths (and dogs), this program may be their first experience of unconditional love. In caring for the dogs on a daily basis, the youth learn to have compassion and respect for all living creatures, and they gain respect for themselves. It’s such a powerful and transformative experience that the recidivism rates (likelihood of the youth to reoffend) after going through this program are far lower than the national average for other institutions - and that’s the truest testimony of its effectiveness. Since its inception, Project POOCH has helped to change (and save) the lives of hundreds of troubled youth and dogs. Through the program, both dogs and youths who were previously given up on are able to gain a new opportunity for a better life, learn valuable skills and life lessons, and forge bonds of trust that lay the ground for future relationships. lthough walking around outside with masks on is par for the course these days, Halloween will probably need to be celebrated differently this year. Restrictions on social gatherings are likely to remain in place for several more months, and with many people reluctant to venture out or greet others at their front door, it’s time to get creative with your plans for this spooky holiday. Here are some ideas for unique and interesting ways to make this Halloween one of the best ones ever, while still observing all recommended guidelines and keeping your family safe. PUMPKINS ARE A MUST
If your local pumpkin patch is open, go pick out your pumpkins for this year, or get them from the grocery store. Carve your pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns or paint them with some scary designs. Don’t forget to roast those yummy pumpkin seeds when you’re done!
DECORATE YOUR HOUSE & YARD Find as many orange and black decorations as you can, or make some yourself and go to town like it’s creepy Christmas! For extra points, create some ambiance with scary music or sound effects.
DRESS UP
You may not be going out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still wear a costume. If you’re the competitive type, set up a Zoom party with your friends and take a vote or have a judge decide which costume is the best.
