WOODBURN FIRE DISTRICT WELCOMES FOUR NEW

Student Resident Volunteers

he Woodburn Fire District welcomes four new members into the student resident volunteer program. Abigail Frey, Nolan Moore, Jared Redmon, and Noah Wierstra join the program as they work towards completing their fire science and paramedic degree programs through Chemeketa Community College. The new students join current student volunteers Troy Jordan, Zack Richardson and Brock Rogers.

The student program is partially funded by a four-year federal grant that was awarded to the fire district in 2018. The grant provides tuition assistance, personal protective gear and uniform items. The program goal is to support students and volunteers as they gain training certifications and real-life work experience in the response to fires, motor vehicle accidents and emergency medical incidents under the supervision of career firefighters and experienced volunteers. Student residents are required to be enrolled full-time in a fire service degree or paramedic training program. In addition, students must meet physical fitness requirements and attain

certifications that allow them to enter burning structures, treat patients experiencing medical emergencies and operate the district’s fire response vehicle and equipment. Housing for the group is provided at Station 22 on James Street in Woodburn and Station 24 on River Road in the Waconda area. Fire Chief Budge: “The Woodburn Fire District has a long tradition of mentoring students enroute to careers in the fire service. The students help meet the fire district’s mission to the community by assisting other volunteers in the response to overlapping emergency calls and public service duties. During the September wildfires, the students helped in covering in-district emergency calls and participated in the assistance provided to other fire districts. Student programs play an important role in training and preparing the next generation of professional firefighters.”

HEY, WOODBURN! Are you looking for a place

with amazing food, awesome drinks, and a homey neighborhood atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more? Well, allow me to inform you that the search is over, and this fantastic place is just a short drive up Hwy 99 in downtown Aurora. The Aurora Colony Pub has been located in the heart of the town for what seems like forever, and if you ever drive north on 99E from Woodburn to Canby you’ve definitely seen it. You may have even been there before, but if you haven’t gone recently you may not recognize it. Five years or so ago, before Janae and Corey Barton purchased it from the previous owners, it was simply a humble local pub. After taking over, the Barton’s have revitalized, remodeled, and renovated the place, turning it into a much more family-friendly establishment. Of course, the full bar and all of the usual pub activities and games are still available, but until 9:00pm kids and families are able to enjoy the establishment as well. As the regular customers who have frequented the pub for years will attest, it’s always been known for great service, great drinks, and a friendly atmosphere, and they certainly haven’t lost any of their regulars due to the upgrades. They’ve simply improved upon every aspect of the business in the hopes of bringing in a wider customer base.

For starters, they’ve added a lot of amazing food to their already great menu. They still have all the traditional favorites that the pub had a reputation for, including their legendary made-from-scratch clam chowder, halibut fish and chips, fried razor clams and oysters, burgers, and hot sandwiches. To give their customers even more to choose from, they are very excited to announce their brand new commercial broaster! This is not a common piece of equipment in most pubs, and there are very few places in the area where you can get the delectable broasted chicken. The broaster works by deep-frying and pressure cooking simultaneously, which gives the chicken a nice crispy coating outside while maintaining all the natural moisture inside. If for no other reason, you must stop by to taste this culinary treat; I guarantee, though, that you’ll want to come back for more. Be very careful if these substances are out in the open, and make sure your pet can’t get a taste of them. If your pet walks over rock salt or other chemicals used to melt ice, make sure to clean their paws immediately after. ◾

Turkey & Wild Rice Soup

DON’T THROW OUT THAT TURKEY CARCASS! Once the Thanksgiving feasting is done, use it to make the broth for this delicious & nutritious soup. INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup butter, cubed 2 carrots, finely chopped 2 celery ribs, finely chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 4 cups turkey broth (or chicken or vegetable) 2 cups cooked wild rice 2 cups cubed cooked turkey 2 cups half-and-half cream 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper

DIRECTIONS In a Dutch oven or large pot, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add carrots, celery and onion; cook and stir until tender. Stir in flour until blended; cook until bubbly. Gradually stir in broth. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and stir 1-2 minutes or until thickened. Stir in remaining ingredients; return to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reprinted from tasteofhome.com

The Woodburn Area Chamber of Commerce represents businesses throughout the area including Woodburn, Hubbard, Donald, Ger vais and beyond. According to Executive Director John Zobrist there are currently over 220 member businesses who work together on the common goal of maintaining and improving the business climate in our area.

here is so much beauty in this world! It can be difficult to remember that sometimes, especially in 2020 when there has been so much chaos to distract from the beauty. But we still live in a particularly gorgeous area of a beautiful country, the sun still rises every morning, the birds still chirp in the trees, and people still perform random acts of kindness. Even during such volatile and turbulent times, if you look around carefully, things really aren’t all bad. There is still a lot of good and a lot of beauty to be found.

In speaking to Linda Chatfield, our local Woodburn artist of the month, that’s her prevailing attitude when it comes to art, as well as life. There is enough ugliness in the world in general. She wants to focus on the beauty that is there and share a little piece of that with you. Linda is one of those people who’s always known she was an artist, ever since she could hold a crayon. She was born with a creative spirit and she has studied and worked to hone her craft throughout her life. Unlike many artists who specialize in one particular medium or style, Linda actually works in many. Her favorites currently are pastels and printmaking - two mediums which can be very tricky to master but bestow great rewards upon the practiced user. Many of us probably experimented with pastels in high school art class, and discovered just how difficult and messy they can be. Whatever kind of image you were looking to create just ended up in one big smudge if you weren’t careful. Linda, however, has managed to tame the difficult medium to her will. Her brilliant colors and shading make everything pop with realism, and her subject matter is as varied as those colors! Such fun stories she has to tell behind each piece, and her wonderfully positive personality comes through bright and clear. Whether it’s representational or abstract, every piece she creates is unique and representative of her perception and skill.

Linda arrived here from the East Coast just about 2 years ago, after moving here to be closer to family. Almost immediately upon arriving, she located and joined the Woodburn Art Center, where she can be found teaching classes on Mondays. She simply wants to share her gift, and understands that beyond some standard rules and general methodologies, there are really no “right” or “wrong” approaches to art. Her job is to provide people with the proper tools to improve their skill, so that they too can experience their own artistic discovery. Not only can you take Linda’s classes at the art center, but she is also available for commission work doing beautiful portraits and still life pieces. 10 Tips For Winterizing Your Home When Old Man Winter appears, make sure your home is prepared with these 10 tips: 1. CHECK THE GUTTERS. Prevent ice dams by cleaning out your gutters, installing gutter guards (if feasible) and making sure the attic floor is properly insulated. The attic itself should be well-ventilated and about 10 degrees warmer than outside. 2. PROTECT THE PIPES. Protect against frozen pipes by insulating those that could be susceptible to freezing. With severe temperature drops, keep a stream of water running in a few faucets to guard against freezing and bursting. 3. SEAL THE CRACKS. Caulk around holes and openings to help prevent cold air from seeping in. Install weather stripping and seals around openings such as windows, doors, air conditioners and mail chutes. 4. STOP THE SLIPS. Keep driveways and sidewalks clear of ice and snow and repair any issues with steps and handrails. 5. INSTALL AN EMERGENCY RELEASE. Consider installing an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect against increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can prevent them from bursting. It’s also a good idea to learn how to shut the water off and know where your pipes are located.

8. TEST YOUR DETECTORS. Residential fires are more common in winter, so it is important that all of your smoke detectors work. Check them monthly and replace batteries as needed. You should also consider installing a carbon monoxide detector to avoid inadvertently trapping this toxic gas in your home. 9. CLEAR THE YARD. Keep the trees trimmed and remove dead branches and debris from your yard. Ice, snow and wind can weaken trees and cause branches to fall and potentially damage your home, car or even yourself and others. 10. HOUSE THE HOSE. Remove all attached garden hoses, drain them and store them away. Shut off the valves and insulate the faucet. Your friends and neighbors at Long Bros.
