This gorgeously animated Disney/ Pixar movie tells the story of a princess named Merida who, drawing upon her bravery and archery skills, must save her mother, Queen Elinor, from an evil curse. Their relationship is a classic push and pull, with Elinor being the prim and proper queen touting rules and traditionalism, while Merida rebels often, deeply, and much to her mother’s disappointment. Brave takes place in a fictional Scotland for a change, and honestly who doesn’t love hearing Scottish accents for 90 minutes? In an interesting twist and a full year before Frozen, Merida has no love interest! She’s an empowered young woman who doesn’t need a man, and with her equestrian and fighting skills she can defeat the evil curse and save her family!

he Alzheimer’s Association Oregon & Southwest Washington Chapter is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s disease care. Serving 38 counties in Oregon & Southwest Washington, their offices are located in Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend and Medford. Since 1982, the Association has provided reliable information and care consultation; created supportive services for families; increased funding for dementia research; and inf luenced public policy changes across the state. The Alzheimer’s Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, forges partnerships with the shared commitment to end Alzheimer’s and other dementia, including Alzheimer’s organizations around the globe, the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging, universities, corporations and the pharmaceutical, biotech and device industries. With their broad partnerships, they are committed to transparency. What is Alzheimer’s? Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms eventually grow severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 6080% of dementia cases. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory

loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. On average, a person with Alzheimer’s lives 4 to 8 years after diagnosis but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors. Alzheimer’s has no cure, but one treatment — aducanumab (Aduhelm™) — is the first therapy to demonstrate that removing amyloid (one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease) from the brain, which is reasonably likely to reduce cognitive and functional decline in people living with early Alzheimer’s. Other treatments can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Today, there is a worldwide effort underway to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset and prevent it from developing. e’ve spent the last couple years selling homes with a little bit of uncertainty. I’ve been asked where I think the market is going; and my answer has been up. I’ve researched housing needs analyses of all nearby cities; I’m seeing changes in generational buying habits; and I’ve been following the supply chain disruptions very closely. All that sounds like a mouthful but – it’s not! We encounter examples of these trends every day, you’ll notice them if you’re paying attention to how each affects the others. I’d be happy to chat about all this over coffee anytime! We are getting very comfortable with just how much of what we do is a balancing act. Remember – real estate is a service industry. other’s Day is a holiday which honors mothers and is celebrated throughout the entire world. The modern form of the holiday started in the United States, where we observe it on the second Sunday in May. Many countries across the globe celebrate Mother’s Day on this same day, while others celebrate throughout the year at various times. During the Middle Ages, the custom developed from allowing people who had moved away to visit their home parish and their mothers on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. This would become Mothering Sunday in Britain, where it continued into modern times until it was replaced by Mother’s Day. This year Mother’s Day is celebrated on Sunday, May 8. Festivals which honor mothers and mother goddesses date back to ancient times. The Phrygians hosted a festival for Cybele, the Great Mother of the Gods, and the Greeks did also for the goddess Rhea. Similarly, the Romans adapted the practice to their own liking. Some countries have continued to observe ancient festivals. For example, Durga-puja, honoring the goddess Durga, remains an important festival in India.

Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, whose mother organized women’s groups to promote health and friendship, founded Mother’s Day. On May 12, 1907, she hosted a memorial service at her late mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia. In five years almost every state observed the holiday, and in 1914 U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday. Although Anna Jarvis orignally promoted white carnations as a tribute to mothers, another custom developed instead: wearing a red or pink carnation for living mothers and a white carnation for mothers who were deceased. Over the years the holiday expanded to include others such as grandmothers and aunts who served in roles of motherhood. Much to Jarvis’s frustration, what originally started as a day of honor would become a day of sending greeting cards and gifts. In protest of the holiday’s commercialization and seeming frivolousness, Jarvis spent her final years trying to abolish the holiday she had brought into being. By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer Springtime blooms bring warm temperatures and longer, sunnier days. But with it pesky pests become more active and carry the potential for preventable diseases. Read on to discover some common bugs and critters that may be harmful to your pet and how to best protect them. TICKS AND LYME DISEASE Although ticks hang out throughout the year, spring’s warmth is when they become more active. Ticks live in tall grasses, forests, leaves, and brush. It may be surprising but ticks even live in your backyard. Your dog or cat may be exposed to these tiny parasites while everyone spends more time enjoying the outdoors. Tick-borne illnesses can be serious. Lyme disease, one of the most common tick-borne illnesses, is a bacteria transmitted to dogs and other animals by certain ticks. Lyme disease resulting from tick bites exists in nearly all 50 states, and thankfully here in the Pacific Northwest we have a lower risk of being exposed to ticks, but you should still take precautions. FLEAS AND FLEA ALLERGY DERMATITIS Fleas are like ticks because they’re more active during the warmer temperatures of spring and can live in nearly all types of environments. Most pets are susceptible to fleas, even indoors! That’s why many veterinarians recommend flea preventative medicines for all household pets, whether they’re indoor or outdoor pets. Fleas can be a major situation for dogs, cats, and the rest of your family. Itching caused by fleas can be irritating enough for a dog or cat, but they can also cause more serious health problems, too. Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is the most common dermatologic disease of domestic dogs in the country. Cats are at risk of developing FAD, too. Fleas are also the cause of transmitting the dog tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum) to dogs, cats, and even humans! In addition, fleas can spread bacterial diseases. MOSQUITOES AND HEARTWORM DISEASE People and pets are at risk for mosquito bites. Heartworm disease is dangerous for pets due to parasitic worms that are spread through mosquito bites. Pets need protection with heartworm preventatives year-round, be it oral supplement, topical solution, or an injection from a veterinarian. They should also be screened for heartworm disease during their semi-annual veterinarian appointments. HOW TO BEST PROTECT YOUR PET Although spring is a wonderful season for warmth and time spent outside, your pets are more susceptible to diseases. Barbecued Picnic Chicken Cooked on a covered grill, the poultry stays so tender and juicy. Everyone loves the zesty, slightly sweet homemade barbecue sauce. INGREDIENTS

2 garlic cloves, minced 2 t butter 1 C ketchup 1/4 C packed brown sugar 1/4 C chili sauce 2 T Worcestershire sauce 1 T celery seed

1 T prepared mustard 1/2 t salt 2 dashes hot pepper sauce 2 broiler/fryer chickens (3-1/2 to 4 pounds each), cut up

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large saucepan, saute garlic in butter until tender. Add the next 8 ingredients. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat; set aside. 2. On a lightly greased grill rack, grill chicken, covered, over medium heat for 30 minutes, turning occasionally. Baste with sauce. HISTORY

The History of Linfield Football: A Streak of Greatness By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

you’re a fan of college football, doubtless names like the “Crimson Tide,” “Fighting Irish,” and “Buckeyes” require no explanation. They speak for themselves. However, if you don’t follow NCAA Division III football, you might not realize that one of the nation’s most successful football programs resides right down the street in McMinnville, Oregon. None of the haloed Division I teams cited above can match the accomplishments of the Linfield University Wildcats. It started on an autumn day, October 6, 1956. Great things often have humble beginnings, and for Linfield football this was certainly the case. While it would have been more dramatic if the Wildcats’ win that day had been defined by a scintillating highlight moment—a miraculous last minute catch in the endzone, or a gutty goal line stand—such was not the case.

experience it and build up over the years.” For a team composed of small town kids and Korean War veterans attending college on the GI Bill, they had no idea that their victory over the Ramblers that fateful October day would be the start of the “Streak.” The “Streak,” which has now extended to 65 consecutive winning seasons as of 2021, is the longest active winning streak in NCAA history at any level. No other team is even close to this record, with the next in line coming in at 42. In retrospect, Ward admits no one at the time had any idea of what was to come. “I guarantee you that in 1956, nobody had any idea there would be any kind of streak,” he said. “We were just happy that we could get through the season with a win.”It was coach Paul Durham’s team that started the “Streak,” but it is a testament to the pride, tradition, and dedication to excellence, fostered by successive coaches over the last six decades, that is

Linfield had just suffered back-to-back losing seasons, and the 1956 campaign looked like more of the same. The opponent that Saturday was the Seattle Ramblers, a semi-pro team on a tear, who had defeated the Wildcats the previous year, and dominated the conference titles over the last 14 seasons. Against the odds, Linfield managed to defeat the Ramblers 13-7. From that game on, the Wildcats wouldn’t lose another game that season. This win over the Ramblers marked the beginning of what has become known as the “Streak.” Paul Ward, who played guard on the ’56 team, recalled: “Once we had a winning season, we knew we could win. responsible for Linfield’s relentless march through the NCAA history books. Looming at the forefront of the Mount Rushmore of Linfield football coaches is Ad Rutschman. Hired as head football coach in 1968, Rutschman continued the winning tradition until his retirement in 1991. Rutschman not only coached football, but baseball as well. Rutschman is still the only coach at any level to win national titles in both football and baseball. In his 24 seasons as Linfield ’s head football coach, Rutschman won three NAIA national championships (1982, 1984, 1986), and 15 Northwest Conference titles. Perhaps Rutschman’s most epic victory occurred in the 1984 national

championship game, where Linfield trailed Northwestern 22-0 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Against all odds, the Wildcats roared back to win the game 33-22. In addition to coaching football and baseball, Rutschman also served as Athletic Director for 25 years, during which time the school’s athletic facilities were greatly improved. Among these improvements were two new gymnasiums, a baseball stadium, and the 26,600 square foot field house named in honor of Rutschman and his wife Joan, for their dedication and service over 27 years to Linfield University. From 1992 to 2005, Linfield’s football program was led by Ed Langsdorf (1992-95) and Jay Locey (1996 -2005). Both coaches kept up the winning tradition. Langsdorf ’s brief tenure resulted in a record of 32-9-1 and three championships. Locey’s tally at the end of his Linfield career was a stellar 84-18 and six championships, including one NCAA Division III title. During one stretch of his impressive career, Locey coached the team to a 41-game win streak.

As Coach Smith ref lected, “From Coach Durha m to Coach Rutschman, to now, the secret to this place has been that we have really good people coming and being part of a really good program. When you focus on excellence and put the team first and you’re a man of your word, great things happen.” The “Streak ” lives on!

In 2006, the future of Linfield football was turned over to Joseph Smith, and he has not only continued the “Streak” but pushed the school into the NCAA record books. Under Smith’s leadership Linfield has amassed an incredible record of 13827, with a .836 win percentage, the highest percentage of any coach in Linfield history.

When Smith, a former defensive back for Linfield in the 90s, took over in 2006, he was well aware of the legacy he was responsible for and described his role as that of a “caretaker.” With Locey’s departure, Smith understood that the decision to hire him had been carefully considered. “It couldn’t be someone from the outside to come in and run the program,” Smith explained. “We had to maintain who we are. If we lost that, we’re just another school.” The Smith era at Linfield has been nothing short of remarkable. For a school that offers no football scholarships, a modest budget for athletics, and typically doesn’t attract big time recruits with NFL aspirations and talent, the question remains: “How does Linfield do it?” How do the Wildcats continue to churn out victories, winning seasons, and championships? Ultimately, how do they keep the “Streak ” alive? Smith credits a number of factors, foremost of which is the sense of family that permeates the entire Wildcat program. Caring for

and a thirst for excellence. Ryan Carlson, a defensive star on the 90s era teams, sums it up beautifully: “Once you’re in our Linfield family, you’re connected to 60 years of people who have had those core principles shape their young lives. Those life experiences continue to breed an incredible amount of love and loyalty towards the program.” As inspiration to his players, Smith periodically invites guest speakers to address the team. This is perhaps the most used tool in the kit! There are varying widths, for whether you need to spread spackling compound, reglaze a window, or scrape off paint or wallpaper.

HANDSAW

Store your tools and supplies in an easy-tohaul toolbox. Or maybe opt for a bucket-liner tool organizer to keep your growing collection of tools organized around an inexpensive fivegallon bucket for easy access.

Less intimidating and faster to set up than a power saw, a handsaw is good for trimming lumber or molding stock. It has a thick blade and a wide, ergonomic handle and just like knives, they come in different sizes and serrating.
