’m sure we were all hoping that we’d closed the door on the insanity of 2020 with the new year, but unfortunately 2021 is already off to a rough start. The recent winter storms that plagued much of the country took no mercy on residents of Woodburn, leaving many homes and businesses without power or heat. For some, the best option was to brave the icy roads in an attempt to seek sanctuary with friends or family who remained unaffected by the outages, while others were left to their own devices.

Anyone who had a generator quickly put it to use, but unfortunately these life-saving devices come with hazards of their own if used improperly. In desperation to keep warm, people also turned to unconventional methods to heat their homes, many of which were highly dangerous. Koin.com reported that many were using charcoal briquettes and outdoor propane heaters inside their houses. The result was several incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning throughout Woodburn and Hubbard. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that is produced by gas-powered heating systems and gas, oil, or coal-burning appliances. It can build up to dangerous levels very quickly in enclosed spaces. Carbon monoxide poisoning is responsible for hundreds of deaths every year, and symptoms of low-level poisoning can be mistaken for the flu, while high levels lead to breathing and vision impairment, reduced brain function, and loss of consciousness. Awareness of the danger of carbon monoxide is critical in prevention. Never use outdoor appliances indoors, and keep them away from the vents and ducts that let air into your home. Never let a vehicle run inside a garage, even with the doors open. Have gas, kerosene, or wood and coal-burning 8 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

appliances regularly inspected and cleaned. If your furnace CARBON breaks, do not use your oven or MONOXIDE stove to heat your home. Avoid POISONING CAN using gas or kerosene heaters inside, and make sure there is HAPPEN proper ventilation if you are AT ANY TIME forced to use one. Keep all gaspowered generators outdoors, preferably far from buildings, and make sure the exhaust faces away from any vents or ducts leading indoors. Extreme circumstances like those caused by the winter storms help highlight just how important it is to use appliances correctly and only for their intended purpose, but carbon monoxide poisoning can happen at any time. It’s crucial to have a working carbon monoxide detector in your home so that you’ll be alerted before it is too late. The cities of Woodburn and Hubbard along with several local businesses came together to make free carbon monoxide and smoke detectors available to the community. Long Bros. was pleased to participate in that effort by purchasing 250 carbon monoxide detectors at a reduced cost for the distribution. They carry these detectors for purchase in the store for anyone who needs one in the future. If your carbon monoxide detector alarm goes off, leave the building immediately and call 911 or the local emergency line. Do not go back inside until the problem has been fixed and the building has been aired out. Make sure to see a doctor as well, even if you don’t feel any symptoms, as carbon monoxide can linger in the blood. e all know that Woodburn has some fantastic restaurants, but when it comes to finding a great sandwich we’re pretty limited. Unless you’re satisfied with something from one of the generic chains, you’re basically out of luck. There is good news though! If you’ve been craving a delicious, gourmet, locally-sourced sandwich, these amazing handcrafted delicacies can be found by simply taking a short drive north. Just head over to Wayward Sandwiches in downtown Canby!

Wayward Sandwiches celebrated its first year of business last October, and ever since opening they’ve collected rave reviews and cultivated a growing fanbase in Canby and throughout the region. And it’s no wonder, since their core philosophy is all about a steadfast commitment to using locally sourced ingredients and making delicious, gourmet-quality food from scratch, while also being accessible and non-pretentious. Matt Morrissey is a West Linn resident and first-time restaurant owner, though he has over two decades of experience in the hospitality industry. That experience included managing Veritable Quandary, one of the most well-known and beloved restaurants in Portland, until it closed several years ago. Another central figure in the vision and early success of Wayward Sandwiches is Justin Rouse, executive chef and assistant general manager. Justin is also a former VQ employee, and considering that was where he and Matt met and became friends, it could be said that this new endeavor of theirs is a phoenix of sorts, rising from the ashes of that unfortunate closure. curating the shop’s wine selection, a growing list that he plans to eventually work up to around 100 labels, featuring vintners from nearby locations like the Willamette Valley, eastern Washington and the “up-andcoming” Rogue River Valley, along with some Californian, French, Spanish and Italian favorites. Many of Wayward’s wine selections are new to the Canby market. Matt’s focus on all things vino has given Justin free rein to produce the shop’s signature menu of meats, which they source locally and smoke in-house. “The best part about working at a sandwich shop is you get to do all these experiments with meat,” he says. “We do everything from scratch. That’s been the plan from the very beginning.” At Wayward, they take that “from scratch” thing really seriously. They make their own pickles. They make their own sauces. They even make their peanut butter and jelly for the kids’ PB&J. The only things they don’t make themselves (their bread and cheese) are sourced locally, from places like Grano, a smallbatch artisanal bakery in Oregon City, and TMK Creamery, the award-winning cheesemakers located just outside Canby. Both Matt and Justin share a vision and commitment to the integrity of the local food chain. This commitment, obviously, extends to the fresh produce they use as well. “All of the produce that we were paying big bucks for up in Portland is grown out here,” Justin says. “So we thought, ‘Let’s talk to our local farmers.’ We’ve been able to meet some really good farmers, and we’ve been able to forge some great relationships.” The menu offers house sandwiches, which tend to be their unique takes on the classics (like a Romanian Pastrami Reuben or a Cajun Chicken Club) or you can build your own. They also have wonderful soups and salads, as well as a unique and ever-

changing selection of daily specials. Their house-made fries and potato chips are already becoming famous.

Their Reuben is particularly popular... and controversial as it turns out. It features Emmentaler cheese (a creamier, more flavorful French alternative to the usual Swiss), a tangier version of Thousand Island dressing that they call “lost sauce,” and house-made sauerkraut that’s a lot crispaer and fresher than you may be accustomed to. The most polarizing part of it is the meat, which they quickly learned had to be cut thick because their smoked pastrami was so tender it would otherwise fall apart (Reubens traditionally feature very thin slices of meat).

Despite the “controversy” around it, the Reuben has become the shop’s Number 2 seller, just behind the ever-popular grassfed beef burger, served with smoked tomato jam, mustard aioli, TMK cheddar, bacon and iceberg lettuce on a brioche bun. Their Wayward Club, which uniquely features harissa, rounds out their top three.

“Every now and then, we do get someone who is upset. They think what we’ve done to the Reuben is somehow sacrilegious,” says Matt. “But for every one of those people, we get five who

t may not always be obvious, but potentially harmful, even fatal, poisons could be lurking around your home or yard without you even realizing it. It only takes one accident for a tragic outcome. Here is a list of some of the most common poisons that could be in or around your home. Human Foods - Many human foods are dangerous for pets. Chocolate is famously dangerous for dogs and it can easily be fatal. Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is in lots of things and can be deadly for pets. If you find anything in your cupboards containing this sweetener, please keep it well out of reach of your pooch! Some produce items, such as onions and garlic, can cause anemia in both dogs and cats. Rodenticide - If at all possible, use a different method to control rodents other than rodenticide. Even if you responsibly keep it out of reach of your pet, there are still risks. After the target animal ingests the poison, they can wander away and die somewhere where your dog, cat, or even a wild animal such as a hawk can find and eat it, thereby ingesting the poison themselves. This type of poison can cause internal bleeding, kidney failure, and seizures. It is truly nasty stuff. Human Medications - There are tons of different medications that can have harmful effects on both dogs and cats, even over the counter medications, so keep everything out of reach. Always keep bottles tightly sealed and store them in a closed medicine cabinet, or you can purchase a small medication lock box in many pharmacies or online. Household Plants - Certain plants that can be dangerous include Lillies, Aloe, Elephant Ears, Asparagus Fern, and Sago Palm, just to name a few. Before you purchase your plant from the nursery, look it up and double-check to make sure it is safe to have around your pets. If you’re concerned that your pet has ingested something poisonous, call the Animal Poison Helpline right away at (855) 764-7661 or contact your veterinarian. Remember, when it comes to poison, time is of the essence and it’s always best to be safe rather than sorry. ◾

WHY ON EARTH DO WE HAVE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME? by Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

ost of us dread that fated day when we have to set the clock forward and wake up an hour earlier the following morning. It can be a miserable and disorienting experience for many people, often resulting in a feeling of fatigue and lethargy for a week or two after the change is made. So why in the name of all that is holy did we begin this seemingly crazy practice in the first place? In looking for someone to blame for our suffering every year, many point the finger at our famous Founding Father from Pennsylvania, Benjamin Franklin. Though the practice was not even implemented until the 20th century, Franklin is credited with suggesting the idea all the way back in 1784. His method, however, would not have involved changing the clocks. In a letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris, entitled “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light,” Franklin suggested that Parisians could make more efficient use of natural daylight (and thereby economize their use of candles) by simply getting out of bed earlier in the morning. It is commonly believed, though, that this was actually written as a satirical essay, and it was not intended as a legitimate suggestion. So while Franklin often suffers the aspersions of many weary souls the morning after, perhaps our ire should be directed elsewhere. New Zealand Scientist George Vernon Hudson would be a more accurate target for our drowsy curses. In 1895 he proposed the idea of a 2-hour shift each spring and fall as a way to preserve more daylight in the summertime. Reportedly, there was some interest in the idea, but it was not adopted at the time. Only a decade later, another suggestion for such a change was made on the other side of the world. In 1905 British builder William Willet suggested setting the clock ahead 20 minutes on each Sunday in April and reversing the process on each Sunday in September. With the time change occurring in small amounts that could be easily adjusted to, this would perhaps have been a more palatable method for most people, but undoubtedly would have resulted in widespread confusion as well. There was enough interest in this idea, though, that a

bill on the matter was drafted in the House of Commons in 1908 and nearly became law in 1909, but was defeated due to heavy opposition from many, especially farmers. Willet died in 1915, never to realize that the same year his proposal was being discussed in the House of Commons, a small town in Canada had already adopted a similar practice. On July 1st of 1908, residents of Port Arthur, Ontario (which is now known as Thunder Bay) set their clocks forward by one hour, starting the world’s first official Daylight Savings Time period. Other cities in Canada soon followed suit, and by 1916 it was so popular that it essentially became standard practice. Germany and Austria were the first countries to implement DST on a national scale starting in April of 1916, in the midst of World War I. Their reasoning was that it would minimize the use of artificial lighting and help conserve fuel for the war effort. That same year the United Kingdom, France, and many other countries followed suit and the practice rapidly gained popularity. Whether you love DST or absolutely loathe it, civilizations throughout history have been known to engage in similar practices. Ancient Roman water clocks, for example, used different scales for different seasons so their daily schedules would adjust with solar fluctuations. Though our current method has only been around for the last century or so, it is now used in over 70 countries and affects over a billion people each year. So on March 14th when the alarm goes off an hour earlier than usual and you’re tempted to lash out at any of the people listed here, take solace in the fact that you have plenty of company that feels the same. *info from timeanddate.com and The Franklin Institute, fi.edu

no - bake grasshopper pie In March we love the color green! Maybe that’s because green reflects the changing of the seasons from winter to spring, or maybe it’s because we really enjoy celebrating St. Patrick’s Day... but do we even need a reason to like green? Whatever you celebrate in March, this festive and minty Grasshopper Pie is sure to be a hit! It’s also really easy and incredibly delicious. INGREDIENTS 6 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk 15 drops green food coloring 24 chocolate-covered mint cookies, divided 2 cups whipped topping 1 chocolate crumb crust (9 inches) DIRECTIONS 1. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until fluffy. 2. Gradually beat in milk until smooth. Beat in the food coloring. 3. Coarsely crush 16 cookies; stir into the cream cheese mixture. 4. Fold in whipped topping. Spoon into the crust. 5. Cover and freeze overnight. Remove from the freezer 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with remaining cookies. WE MOURN THE FALLEN TREES Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are blessed to have beautiful green foliage all twelve months of the year.

e travel to drier climates and can’t wait to get home to our trees. The ice storm in February was devastating to say the least. We’ve gotten our power back. Our yards will get cleaned up. But our trees – the ones that did survive – will bear the scars for years to come.

I can’t help but sit here and think of all the homes I’ve sold that sold because of the trees living there, and not the house. I’ve sold family homes where the grown children have photos of the neighborhood kids climbing small oaks that now they can’t even reach the first branch. There are weeping cedars made home to forts, filled with all the imagination that a child’s mind can manage. In Tukwila, the maples line the drive and make for the most beautiful fall walks. Our orchards, hazelnuts, peaches, pears, apples, and so much more, contribute to our spot on the map as Oregon’s highest producing agricultural community. Not even they were spared the devastation this ice brought. My greatgrandmother’s

favorite tree is the Dogwood. I smile and think of walks to the bookstore whenever I drive past one. All this is to say, I think we are emotionally closer to our landscape than we ever imagined. We may take it for granted, and that could be because we are blessed to enjoy its beauty, we’ve grown up here and we don’t know anything else. 2021 is bringing challenges just as we experienced in 2020. Does that make them any less difficult? No. Not for a second. But we have learned how to jump to action quicker. We are all lucky to live in Woodburn, where neighbors step up, and businesses open their doors. I don’t sell houses, I sell homes, futures and opportunities. I’m more reminded of that every day. So tomorrow, as you venture out into our community, pause to appreciate all that our area has to offer. Until we meet, be well.

fter going through a tremendously stressful time (or year), it’s important to take a moment to rest, reset, and find some balance. These are the things that allow us to continue facing life’s challenges with a healthy outlook, and I’m sure we have more challenges still to come. Christine became enamored with make-up and beauty when she was a little girl, and in high school and college that love continued to grow as she got into professional modeling. She had already built a solid foundation in make-up while modeling, but expanded her skills further by going into esthetics (which deals with the beautification of the skin through treatments such as facials, superficial chemical peels, body treatments, and waxing). In particular, she perfected her eyebrow waxing skills by working at Anastasia Beverly Hills, one of the most well-known waxing boutiques in California that caters to a celebrity clientele. She garnered such high praise for her expertise that she was hired to teach her methods at the renowned Paul Mitchell beauty schools. Fueled by her undying passion, Christine kept working toward the dream of having her own business, and in 2014 her determination was realized and Divine Complexions was born. There is an old adage that states: “From humble beginnings come great things,” and that could not be more appropriate to describe what Christine has accomplished. Initially, the business was run out of her house in Oregon City. She literally brought customers into her home and walked them up the stairs to the “spa” (aka guest bedroom). She heated her towels in a crock pot because she hadn’t yet built enough of a client base to afford the expensive equipment that the high end salons used.

She also happened to be 8 months pregnant with her second child when she began! Christine has 5 boys now, and she’s managed to continue building this burgeoning business all while meeting the demands of being a wife and mother to 5 energetic young males. Her example of what can be achieved through vision and determination is an inspiration to anyone who has a dream and a desire. She’s a model in both the literal and figurative sense!

Women may take more initiative when it comes to caring for themselves, but if we’re honest we could all use some esthetic treatment from time to time. The importance of cleansing your skin By Beauty Expert Christine Lewy

hen someone comes to me with a skin concern such as breakouts, dull skin that lacks glow, or even fine lines and wrinkles, the first question I ask is this: “How often are you cleansing your skin and what are you using?” When it comes to having beautiful skin, the absolute most important thing to start with is your cleanser. How often should you cleanse your skin? Everyone, including children, should cleanse their face twice a day, morning and night, no exceptions. Cleansing a third time after working out is always a good idea too. Cleansing at night might be obvious. Maybe you’ve worn makeup throughout the day, but even if you haven’t, cleansing your skin at night is important because throughout the day particles called free radicals land on your skin and cause your skin to age faster. Your pores also excrete oil and you’d be surprised how many times you touch your face throughout the day. Think about all those germs and bacteria sitting on your pores! Gross! While you are sleeping is when your skin regenerates the most, and it needs a clean surface to do that best. It’s been noted that you age seven times faster if you go to bed without cleansing your skin. Putting on your skin care products at night is also important so those rejuvenating ingredients are readily available for your skin cells to utilize. Sometimes you’ll need to cleanse twice at night; for example, if you’ve had a day of heavy make up wearing. Cleansing your skin in the morning is also just as important. While you sleep your pores excrete toxins and you should wash those off before you start the day. HISTORY

oodburn is home to some of Oregon’s most popular tourist attractions; the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, Woodburn Premium Outlets, Hanson Vineyards, and the list goes on. One historic destination that is not as well known to visitors (but is no less wonderful) is the beautiful Settlemier House. This local treasure is recorded in the National Register of Historic Places, and is owned and maintained by the non-profit French Prairie Historical Society. Located at the intersection of Settlemier Avenue and Garfield near downtown Woodburn, this stunning Victorian era Craftsman-style house was completed in 1892 by the founder of Woodburn, Jesse Settlemier. At the time of its construction, this magnificent structure was considered to be the most beautiful mansion in Marion County. Settlemier had traveled West with his family as a small child, moving all the way from Illinois to California before finally settling in Mt. Angel, Oregon in 1849. His interest in horticulture began shortly thereafter, and before he turned 18 he and two of his brothers had already opened a nursery in Linn County. In 1862, at the age of 22, he married Eleanor Cochran. Settlemier was an insatiably ambitious man, and in 1863 (less than 5 years after he and his brothers went into business together) he stepped out on his own and purchased 214 acres of land in the lower Willamette Valley. On this property he opened his own Woodburn

Nursery, which in short order became one of the largest nurseries on the West Coast. Initially, the Settlemiers lived in a small log cabin and later built a modest wood-framed house in the Gothic style that was popular at the time, close to where the current house sits. It was not until almost 30 years later that Jesse built the grand and elaborate house that still stands today and the wood-framed Gothic was moved across the street. Both the current Settlemier House and the Gothic wood-framed house still exist, the latter being one of the few remaining gothic structures in Oregon. Settlemier was a pioneer and an entrepreneur. In 1871, yearning for more growth in the region, he founded the town of Woodburn, platting the first 4 blocks of what would later become the downtown area. (As it happened, the name Woodburn was derived from an incident where a slash burn - a method used in subsistence farming where plant life is cut down or “slashed” and then burned to provide nutrients for the soil - got out of control and burned a nearby woodlot.) Settlemier was so determined to encourage expansion that he offered free lots to anyone interested, provided they would promise to build on the property. In addition, he provided land for a church, a school, and gave 85 acres to the Southern Railroad to help persuade them to come through town. He became Woodburn’s first mayor in 1885 and served 2 terms, and even served as president of the first bank in town. Jesse Settlemier died in 1913, but his son Frank had already taken over the nursery business and moved into the house. Frank and his wife Mabel ran the nursery and lived there until 1951, making some significant upgrades during that time. Almost immediately after moving in, they added electricity and modern plumbing. Shortly thereafter, they began several remodeling projects which included updating the interior, adding a drive-through carport, and building a sleeping porch towards the rear of the structure. Viewing the house from the road, one is immediately struck by the beautiful elegance of the Queen Anne style curved railings, scrollwork, arches, and cupolas. The sheer volume of intricacy and artistry built into the

exterior leaves modern construction and design looking dull by comparison. The 3-acre property of impeccablylandscaped grounds, including a large gazebo in the back, is almost as stunning as the house itself. Inside, the architecture and antique furnishings give one the sense of walking back in time. Credit goes to the French Prairie Historical Society for their attention to detail and unyielding dedication in providing the most authentic experience possible while visiting the Settlemier House. Every room has something of interest. Some of the furnishings and artifacts were left behind by the Settlemiers, some were purchased by the historical society, and much more was donated to them. Woodburn literally would not exist if not for Jesse Settlemier and his family! The houses that he left behind are a mere symbol of all that he did to build the foundations of everything that has come since.

Architectural historical landmarks like the Settlemier House are becoming more and more rare, particularly ones that are open to the public. We are so fortunate to have this gorgeous structure available for our enjoyment and education. While touring opportunities have been limited this past year, it’s absolutely worth your time to make the trip. Just make sure that you confirm availability and make reservations beforehand. BUSINESSES & PUBLIC SERVICES JOIN TOGETHER In the days following the February 12th ice storm, Woodburn Fire District partnered with area businesses, the City of Woodburn and Woodburn CERT to distribute hundreds of free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to area residents. The 50 year storm brought down hundreds of trees and powerlines and resulted in power outages for more than 250,000 residences and businesses. As residents resorted to any available means to cook and provide heat for their homes, Woodburn and Hubbard Firefighters began responding to reports of unconscious patients from carbon monoxide poisoning. Before the week was over, fire and ambulance crews responded to six different incidents that resulted in 21 people being transported to area hospitals for treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning. The Woodburn Fire District and city officials began sending out warnings to the public about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) gas. As word spread, the City of Woodburn and local businesses responded quickly and donated over 700 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for area residents. Fire Chief Joe Budge expressed his appreciation to Long Bros. Building Supply, Do It Best and GW Hardware, Specialty Polymers, and Gem Equipment for their part in donating the detectors, “We feel very fortunate to live in a community where businesses and public services can work together quickly to help keep the community safe.”

Chief Budge also credited the members of the Woodburn Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for their role in distributing the free detectors. “The CERT members volunteered their time to help others in the community when they needed it most,” praised Chief Budge. In addition to the detector disbursement, CERT volunteers surveyed the streets and mapped out the dozens of road closures to aid fire crews in choosing their emergency response routes. Cooking and heating appliances that are designed for use outside produce CO gas, which is a colorless and odorless byproduct of combustion. When such appliances are used in closed areas, the lack of open air ventilation causes asphyxiation from the displacement of oxygen. Low concentrations of CO exposure result in headaches, nausea, and confusion, while high concentrations can result in unconsciousness and death within a few minutes. Firefighters responding to emergency calls carry air monitors that can detect the presence of CO gas. When the gas is encountered, the firefighters don self-contained breathing apparatus that provide clean air to breath while searching for and rescuing the unconscious victims. Exhaust from internal combustion engines in cars, electric generators and other gas powered equipment can also cause CO poisoning if the exhaust is allowed to accumulate in unventilated areas. For this reason, the Woodburn Fire District recommends that electrical generators be kept at least 15 feet away from structures to prevent CO gas from entering the home.
