She attended medical school at Texas A&M University College of Medicine — and completed her residency training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Outside of work, Dr. Hansen spends a lot of time with her family, which includes a dog and a rabbit. She enjoys watching football and running. She’s even run a few 5K races in costume! Dr. Hansen currently works in the Salem Health Medial Clinic – Woodburn as an OB/GYN.

What is an OB/GYN and what do they do? OB/GYN is short for obstetrics and gynecology. As an obstetrician, I treat women before, during and shortly after pregnancy — which includes birth control and delivering babies. As a gynecologist, I provide treatment for all symptoms and issues with the female reproductive system. Why did you become an OB/GYN? I love taking care of women — and I love the balance of working with women in the clinic and performing surgeries. What do you want your patients to know about you? I’m a partner in my patients’ health. I hope they find me open, easy to talk to, and that they leave the visit feeling seen and heard. Corned Beef and Cabbage

elebrate St. Patrick’s Day with this Slow Cooker Corned Beef and Cabbage. Juicy meat, tons of flavor, incredibly delicious.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• 1 medium yellow onion, cut into large wedges • 3 large carrots, cut into thirds • 2 stalks celery, cut into thirds • 1/2 lb. baby potatoes, halved • 1 corned beef brisket (2-3 lbs) • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 packet pickling spice • 3 sprigs thyme • 2 bay leaves • 1/2 green cabbage, cut into large wedges

1. Add onion, carrots, celery and potatoes to bowl of your crock pot. Place corned beef on top and season generously with salt, pepper, and pickling spices. Scatter thyme and bay leaves over meat and fill slow cooker bowl with water until it is almost completely covering the meat. 2. Cook on high for 4 to 41/2 hours, until meat is tender. Add cabbage to crock pot and cook on high for 45 minutes to 1 hour more, until cabbage is tender and cooked through. Remove meat and vegetables from slow cooker, slice and serve.

The History of St. Patrick’s Day by Courtney Smith

elieve it or not, Saint Patrick’s Day traditions didn’t always include Guinness beer and wearing green. The celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day actually started with the death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and much later the holiday evolved into a celebration of Irish culture, with parades, special foods, music, dancing, drinking and a whole lot of green. Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. Born in Roman-ruled Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to the people there. In the centuries following Saint Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture. One legend is that he drove all the snakes of Ireland to their destruction in the sea. Another is that he often explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock. This led to a tradition of Irishmen wearing shamrocks in their lapels on Saint Patrick’s Day. In Ireland the holiday was commonly celebrated with religious services and feasts, but it was transformed into a mostly secular day of revelry by emigrants to the United States. Irish patriotism among American immigrants flourished, prompting the rise of so-called “Irish Aid” societies like the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades featuring bagpipes and drums. In 1848, several of the New York Irish Aid societies decided to unite their parades to form one

official New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Today that parade is the world’s oldest civilian parade and the largest in the United States, with over 150,000 participants. Each year nearly 3 million people gather along the 1.5-mile parade route to watch the procession, which takes more than five hours. Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Savannah also celebrate the day with parades involving between 10,000 and 20,000 participants each. When the Great Potato Famine hit Ireland in 1845, close to 1 million poor and uneducated Irish Catholics began pouring into America to escape starvation. Despised for their alien religious beliefs and unfamiliar accents by the American Protestant majority, many immigrants faced discrimination and difficulty finding work. When Irish-Americans took to the streets on St. Patrick’s Day to celebrate their heritage, newspapers often portrayed them in cartoons as drunk, violent monkeys. The American Irish soon began to realize, however, that their large and growing numbers endowed them with a political power that had yet to be exploited. They started to organize and their voting block, known as the “green machine,” became an important swing vote for political hopefuls. Suddenly, annual Saint Patrick’s Day parades became a show of strength for Irish Americans, as well as a must-attend event for a slew of political candidates. In 1948, President Harry S. Truman attended New York City’s Saint Patrick’s Day parade, a proud moment for the many Irish Americans whose ancestors had to fight stereotypes and racial prejudice to find acceptance in the New World. Whether you are Irish by birth or Irish for the day, be smart and have fun! Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Judy Stubb by Courtney Smith Judy Stubb was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and has been a resident of Wilsonville, Oregon since 1970. Most of her working years have been spent being “creative” with food, managing Hickory Stick Catering for 10 years, then forming her own business, Baroness Catering, Inc. for 21 years. Judy sits on the Woodburn Art Center Board of Directors. When her husband passed away in 1989, she vowed not to stay home and feel sorry for herself. Having watched Bob Ross and The Joy of Painting on PBS for years, she decided to look for a class and see if it was as easy as it looked. She found a class at a nearby Michaels store, signed up and was immediately hooked. Not only was it easy, it was fun! It was also great therapy, allowing her to be absorbed in the painting and losing the rest of the world for the 3-4 hour class. It was so much fun, she followed her instructor around to the different locations he taught in and took all the classes she could fit into her schedule. Then, the instructor moved across country! Left without her therapist, and not finding another instructor who was close enough or who fit into her busy schedule, Judy contacted the BOB ROSS COMPANY and found that there were certification classes in Portland. Judy then immediately signed up, got certified, and now gets so much therapeutic joy as a painting instructor herself. Judy has been spreading The Joy of Painting since 2003 and plans to continue to do so for many years to come. She teaches classes at The Woodburn Art Center, Parks and Recreation in Wilsonville, Newberg, Lake Oswego, West Linn, and Troutdale. Soon, there will be even more locations added to the list because The Joy

of Painting is just too much fun to keep to herself. Her students range in age from 12 to 90+ and in skill level from those who have never held a brush to seasoned painters. Her favorite students are those who arrive saying “I have no talent. I can’t do this!” They invariably leave with their painting saying “Wow! I did this myself!” Then they return for a great time learning and creating, usually bringing along a doubting friend, another convert to be! Judy’s passion goes much further than her paintbrush and canvas, especially when it comes to giving back to our community. She teaches free classes to Veterans that are suffering from PTSD, and it allows them to release their emotions through the canvas just like Judy did when she first started painting for therapy. Judy also donates her paintings to a local church to help with their building maintenance fees, and to Habitat For Humanity. Judy’s talent is ultimately a gift that keeps giving. Painting isn’t a one size fits all kind of gig, it’s individualistic creativity expressed from every mood and emotion you may have. Anyone can do it! After all,“Perfection is boring,” said Judy. Bob Ross once said “let’s get a little crazy!” Judy will help you let go, get a little crazy, and become the artist you never knew you could be! METROPOLIS by Courtney Smith The Metropolis Building is one of the oldest buildings in Woodburn. Originally built in 1891 and called the Association Building, various businesses came and went in and out of it until the Great Earthquake of 1993 hit, leaving the building damaged and vacant for over 20 years. In 2017 the building was bought and remodeled, though the owner didn’t quite know what to do with the space. Property Manager Noe Valenzuela happened to have just had an event in the new location and the owner approached him to see if he was interested in managing the building. Now, Noe opens up the space and livens up the city with all kinds of private and public events in Downtown Woodburn. Once a month the Metropolis opens up to the public and turns into a night club with live music and dancing. This past month they closed the night with a band of 16 members. Noe knows that the community is very important so he has teamed up with The City of Woodburn to plan and put on more future events like Farmers Markets in the Plaza and Special Sunday Brunches for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. The building features a high, architectural timber post, a beamed ceiling and large windows overlooking Woodburn Plaza and Front Street. The Metropolis Venue, on the second floor of the building, offers nearly 5000 square feet of usable space that can accommodate up to 400 people. The venue is approximately a 100 foot long and 50 foot wide open space that can easily be transformed to perfectly accommodate nearly any event or activity. Noe is a very passionate Manager and he will work with you to set up any type of dream event. Between the projector, kitchen space, dancing room, video capability and so much more, the options are unlimited. Everything from table settings to wall lighting is customized to your liking, and they are happy to share a preferred vendors list that provides an outside catering list, DJ’s, and decorators. The only thing that the Metropolis doesn’t allow is outside alcohol. No event is exactly the same so the Metropolis’ rental rates are flexible and vary based on duration, with special discounts available for non-profits, schools, churches and other groups. Long Bros. Building Supply by Courtney Smith Long Bros. Building Supply dates back four generations and began with Great Grandfather Chester Long, who started “C. G. Long and Sons” in Keizer, Oregon back in the 1950’s. When the family wanted a new adventure, they leased out their space in Keizer and came to Woodburn to start L&L Building Supply in 1974, where son Donald (Buddy) Long and his wife Janet took the helm along the third generation of kids growing up in the business. The three brothers moved back into the Keizer yard for a decade until 1995 when Jim and Larry switched gears to put all their energy and focus on the Woodburn location and changed to the cooperate name that you have grown to know, Long Bros. Building Supply, Inc. The business has remained in the family with Kelly, Larry’s daughter, who started learning every job under the roof in the early 90’s and is now the Vice President of Operations. Mark Long, Jim’s son, joined the business around 2010 and is the Vice President of Sales and runs the sales crew. Larry and Lorie have since retired. With over 45 years in business serving Woodburn, Long Bros. Building Supply makes sure your projects and dreams turn into reality every single day.
