or many responsible pet owners, their dog is an important member of the family. So it’s natural to want to take your four legged friend with you in the car. There’s nothing wrong with bringing your dog along for a car ride, as long as you have no plans to make any stops where you have to leave them in the car. It doesn’t take long for a car to heat up in summer temperatures or cool down during the winter. But is there a safe temperature to leave a dog in a car? On a mild day of about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature inside your car can quickly rocket to over 115 degrees, according to a study in the Journal of Pediatrics. Most of this temperature rise occurs within just 30 minutes, and dogs can experience heat exhaustion when their body temperature hits 103 degrees. In general, it is best to avoid leaving your pet in any unattended vehicle, especially for any extended amount of time. However, if you must leave your dog in the car, here are some tips to do so safely: n During daylight hours crack a window, park in a shady spot and leave water for them to drink. n Be sure not to get sidetracked. A five-minute errand can easily turn dangerous for your dog if you become distracted from returning to your car right away. n If you have a passenger in the car with you, have them stay in the car with your dog and keep the air conditioner running. If you see a dog/animal in a hot car in distress call 911 immediately. If you have more questions please reach out to your local veterinarian.

INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 cup quick cooking oats • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided • 1/8 teaspoon baking powder • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed • 1/4 cup butter, melted • 2 cups pitted sour cherries • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Spray four ramekins with non-stick cooking spray. 3. Combine oats, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, baking powder and baking soda together in a medium bowl. Whisk together well to evenly combine. 4. Add brown sugar and melted butter to the flour mixture and mix well to form a clumpy dough. Set aside. 5. In another bowl combine pitted cherries, granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour. Mix well so the cherries are coated with the flour and sugar. Divide them between the four sprayed ramekins. 6. Cover cherries with crisp topping, dividing it evenly between the four ramekins. 7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until crisp topping is golden brown.

f you’ve never been to Bauman’s Farm and Garden, let us introduce you to an indefinable oasis of Willamette Valley life. Nestled in a grove of cedar and oak trees looming over the old farmhouse, the iconic red barn invites visitors into a thriving, bustling marketplace. Bauman Farms does indeed grow an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that are sold exclusively at this farm market, located just east of 99E between Gervais and Woodburn on Howell Prairie Road. What’s more, this “store” is surrounded by an expanse of greenhouses and open areas bursting with blooming flower baskets; annuals, herbs, and edibles; perennial and exotic plants; and a nice selection of nut, fruit and ornamental trees to browse and buy. All this greets you long before you make your way to the red barn entrance. Once inside, you’ll find a wide selection of fruits and vegetables year round. As you wind your way through fresh produce, the interior space reveals itself. Try not to miss any of the far corners or meandering displays because treasures abound at Bauman’s.

oodburn Estates & Golf has been a pillar of the community for decades. The sale of homes in the development was established in 1961, and the legal name Senior Estates Golf and Country Club was registered April 10, 1967. It wasn’t until 2015 that Woodburn Estates & Golf became the official name, but name change or no, the welcoming community has retained the same charm throughout the years. Over the years Woodburn Estates & Golf has grown from modest beginnings to a community of over 1500 homes, with an active team that works to provide community engagement and entertainment for the residents. The Activities Committee works tirelessly to create entertainment programs for members, which are often held in their Community Center or Auditorium. These include everything from dances to games to concerts, and they always have a full and exciting calendar for everyone to enjoy. However, due to the current situation, all activities have been temporarily suspended. As a 55+ community, they are especially concerned with preventing the spread of coronavirus and actively encourage residents to “Stay Home and Stay Safe.” Since the community center is currently shut down by official State order, committee Director Sharyn Cornett and her team came up with the idea to take the entertainment out to the residents by doing a weekly Sunshine Caravan. Every Wednesday the team parades around various parts of their community, waving and greeting everyone (from a distance) in order to spread cheer to residents during these tough times.

The committee is also taking their Sunshine Caravan to the surrounding Senior Care Centers near Woodburn Estates & Golf, where many of their former residents now reside. The Woodburn Estates & Golf Community wants everyone to know how supportive they are of all residents, both past and present, as well as the community at large. Larry Jones is the President of Woodburn & Estates & Golf, and he is very proud of all the amenities that their residents have access to. Among some standard features such as an exercise room and a library, the Estates also has an indoor pool and spa, an auditorium, pool table room, card room, and an excellent restaurant on the premises called the Country Cottage (which is currently offering curbside delivery only). They also offer R.V. parking. Then of course, there’s the golf. They have an 18-hole Private Golf Course for members, which is managed by Pro Shop Staff that provides tee times for the golfers. The Pro Shop is stocked with apparel and golfing supplies. There is also a Golf Lounge in the Pro Shop area where members can gather after playing a round or two. There are associate plans for non-residents to use the golf course. There are also future plans for use of the Pool & Spa, Exercise Center, Card Rooms and other clubhouse activities. une is National Safety Month and Long Bros Building supply is doing their best to help you make the most of it. The focus of National Safety Month is on saving lives and preventing injuries in the workplace and beyond, and this year the focus seems to have expanded to preventing the spread of illness as well. Long Bros. has always had a strong logistical plan in place to maintain a clean working environment for both customers and staff. With the Covid-19 pandemic still looming, they want you to know that the safety and health of their customers and staff is very important. Extra measures are being taken at the store to increase daily cleaning procedures, including sanitizing carts, baskets and counters, washing hands, credit card machines, door handles and more throughout the day. Distancing measures such as online ordering, curbside pickup, and payment by phone have also been implemented. They are currently maintaining regular business hours: Monday-Friday from 7:30am to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 8:00am to 3:00pm, closed on Sundays. Everything has been really serious these days, and the team at Long Bros knows how important it is to laugh, so to have some fun here’s a list of 7 ways to celebrate National Safety Month with a humorous twist from Simplified Safety and the National Safety Movement:

REPEL DOWN THE SIDE OF YOUR BUILDING If you find it too easy to get over the edge, that may be because you lack the needed rooftop guardrail. PLAY “GUESS THAT SMELL” While walking around the workplace try to notice the different smells in each area. There are many things that can be silent-but-deadly in the workplace; high VOC levels can be just one of them. Chemical inhalants can be hazardous to your health. (FREE PSA) You may want to consider carrying a couple of complimentary cans of axe body spray to give away as “prizes”... just sayin’. START GAMBLING But play it smart. Transitions from ladders to elevated surfaces are the roulette of workplace safety (really bad odds). Statistically this is where most fatalities by fall occur. Give yourself a competitive edge with roof hatch guardrails or an industrial safety gate. Remember to always bet on safety yellow. HALLOWEEN IN JUNE You’ve heard of Christmas in July? Well here’s a new one for you. Try walking around the workplace like a zombie by dragging one of your feet behind you, and moaning “Braaaiins”. C’mon everyone is doing it! That dragging foot can even help you to feel for trip hazards along the way.

PLAY DOCTOR No need to get out your old Fisher Price kit and start checking your coworkers for symptoms resulting from poor ergonomics. The “Advil” test works great to find what motions are causing fatigue and strain. Simply inquire what aches and pains cause them to reach for the bottle. How’s that for high-tech root cause analysis? KICK THE CAN Play a few games of “kick the can” from every elevated surface in your workplace. If workers below keep complaining about the can falling on their heads, that is a sure sign that you need toe-board on your guardrails. Speaking of guardrail, do you have railings on all your stairs and elevated work surfaces? Nothing ruins a good game of kick the can faster than a stubbed toe or fractured C5 Vertebrae. TOW-MOTOR TAG One of my personal favorites. Here’s how to play: One employee chases people around with a forklift, and all the others try not to get “tagged”. It helps to use the employee workstations as safe zones, and that would be a good time to make sure that each workstation has the appropriate impact barriers and bollards. *THESE ARE NOT ACTUAL SAFETY TIPS.
