Close Encounters (1977): PG Directed by Steven Spielberg, legendary sci-fi author Ray Bradbury said this was the greatest movie ever made. Probably the alien movie that begat all others, it’s more of a drama meets conspiracy thriller, focused on the mystery and fear than the science or the aliens themselves. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, and François Truffaut, this is classic alien cinema that holds up after 45 years. Okay for older kids.

Alien (1979): R From Ridley Scott, the alien popping from the chest is what we remember, as do countless satirical versions of this scene. This is probably one of the earliest scifi horror films and was terrifying when released. Starring the legendary Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kott. Older teens or adults only.

E.T. (1982): PG Yet another Spielberg hit, this movie holds up at 40 years old. Young Elliot accidentally discovers an alien in the woods (as one does) and brings it home to live in his closet, feeding it Reese’s Pieces and slowly befriending it. Enter the government in hazmat suits who quickly want to dissect cute little E.T. It’s tense and exciting, thought-provoking, cute, and surprising. And with an adorably cute 6-year-old Drew Barrymore. Good for older kids to watch with their parents.

Independence Day (1996): R A close second favorite of mine, it’s quintessential alien sci-fi and a must-see summer blockbuster. It’s quippy, bombastic, scientific, and extremely satisfying in the sense of “they’re coming, let’s fire up the jets.” Starring Will Smith, Vivica A. Mars Attacks!| (1996): PG-13 I watched this far too young, but it’s hilarious and my favorite alien movie nonetheless. From the twisted mind of Tim Burton, malevolent Martians invade Earth and its star-studded cast of characters, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Jack Nicholson, Michael J. Fox, Pierce Brosnan, Natalie Portman, Glenn Close, Jack Black, Danny DeVito, and more. There’s ray guns, explosions, and jokes galore. Pretty much a light-R, so better for older teens and adults.

Signs (2002): PG-13 In the heyday of M. Night Shyamalan, this is a movie of classic suspense done in the same vein of Jaws, where not seeing the monster is what’s terrifying. It’s slow and quiet and incredibly written. Starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Caulkin, and Abigail Breslin. For scares and language, this is solidly 13+.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): PG-13 Known for its incredible 70s soundtrack and probably the funnest alien movie there is, it’s a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s funny, explosive, polished, and full of characters you love to root for. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker and more. Bad language and violence, better for late teens and adults.

A Quiet Place (2018): PG-13 The talk of 2018 and a source of endless satire, it’s actually an alien movie (if you’ve never seen it) and probably the best and most inventive of the last decade. It’s pure suspense, building on the senses, and quite terrifying. Starring John Krasinksi (Jim from the Office), his wife Emily Blunt, and many more, this is a must see scary alien movie. Better for late teens and adults.

UFO Sightings in the PNW

here’s a long history of documented UFO sightings in the Pacific Northwest which date back to 1947. Although often discredited as a ‘conspiracy theory’ believed by kookie individuals who enjoy wearing tinfoil hats, there are indeed countless videos and accounts of Unidentified Flying Objects which government and aeronautics experts cannot explain away as weather balloons, swamp gas, or ‘training exercises’. Interestingly, Oregon ranks second in the country for most reported UFO sightings, and Washington ranks third. You’ve heard of the Roswell Incident in 1947. But have you heard of Washington in 1947? Kenneth Arnold, a private pilot, saw 9 “saucer-like aircraft flying in formation” in Washington between Mount Adams and Mount Rainier. He estimated the flying objects traveled around 1,200 miles per hour. Interestingly, in 1947 Chuck Yeager broke the Sound Barrier in his experimental X-1 jet which exceeded 662 miles per hour. I think it’s logical to assume that the object which Arnold witnessed couldn’t have been manufactured on Earth, because its speed was nearly double that of the X-1, which was still a prototype in 1947. Intrigued? Me too! Probably the most famous UFO report in the Pacific Northwest happened in my hometown of McMinnville in 1950. On May 11 near 7:30 PM, farmers Evelyn and Paul Trent witnessed a disc-shaped object hovering in the sky. According to the couple, Paul ran inside the house for

a camera and took what became the much-debated and historic Trent UFO photographs. The photos were famously printed in Life Magazine and newspapers nationwide, and are considered one of the most famous UFO photos ever. This 1950 sighting eventually led to the creation of the UFO Festival in McMinnville, sone of the country’s largest, held every May to commemorate the sighting. Later in 1959, a police officer named Robert Dickerson was driving in Redmond when he saw a bright, large object descend, abruptly stop, and hover at 200 feet. The nearby treetops glowed because the object was low enough, he said. A Redmond Airport administrator also witnessed the UFO and filed an official report with the FAA. And the unexplained sightings continued as recently as 2004 and 2015, when in 2019 the Navy and Pentagon confirmed videos taken by Navy pilots that showed UFOs, moving at incredible speeds, which could not be explained. Commander David Fravor, a former U.S. Navy Pilot, explained one of the videos was “something I had never seen in my life” and discredited the idea of a weather balloon or explainable object. In 2019, a Navy official said that the Navy does not believe aliens have been flying in US airspace. But if the Navy and Pentagon don’t believe they’re aliens, then how can they be explained? This begs grander questions, such as: Are we alone in the universe? Are aliens friendly? And when will we invent our own flying cars?

She graduated in 2014 from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on small animals. She enjoys behavior, dermatology, and preventative medicine. She prioritizes using fear-free techniques to reduce the stress of vet visits for pets. Dr. Pelton grew up on the East Coast and in Southern California, and is excited to have new adventures in the Pacific Northwest. he Canby Arts Association presents the first annual Through the Looking Glass Arts Festival on July 23rd from 11:00am to 7:00pm at Wait Park in downtown Canby. The inaugural event coincides with the 40th Anniversary of the Canby Arts Association, and celebrates visual, literary, musical, and culinary art from local areas. The purpose of the festival is to provide authors and artists a platform to share their talents to enrich the lives of individuals and the community as a whole. he Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana will be celebrating its 58th annual event this August! Founded in 1964 as a celebration to mark the end of the harvest, the Fiesta Mexicana was recognized in 2017 as an Oregon Heritage Tradition. The city’s largest event held each year, serves as a platform for the Fiesta Mexicana Court. From the Fiesta’s inception, the Court has been a prominent feature, and the court has evolved to become an avenue for building leadership, mentorship, and giving back to the community.

ars e Y 58 The Court Program provides student candidates with exposure to activities and training that will help prepare them for academic, community service, and career opportunities. Court members will find their experiences and varied social engagements challenging while also rewarding. One of the key elements of the program is the focus on community service and volunteer work. “Our program provides the Court opportunities to learn more about organizations that provide social or livability benefits to the community. Volunteering is not just something you do because you’re part of the Court but something we want to help build, and that they’ll continue to nourish as they go on to college or pursue their careers,” explains Maricela Guerrero, Community Relations Manager. Fiesta Mexicana Court members are junior/seniors from surrounding school districts. The members are evaluated according to their demonstrated commit ment to academics and community service, as well as their performance during official Fiesta Court functions. “My extracurricular activities include high school dance team, painting and drawing, playing basketball, and a love for dancing, and going to jaripeos. My future goal is to graduate high school next year. Afterwards I want to attend college and become a police officer. The reason I’m interested in being on the Fiesta Court is because I love how the Fiesta welcomes and celebrates all of our different traditions, and also how we receive opportunities to be able to help around Woodburn. What I hope to learn from this experience is all the different cultures and traditions from Woodburn, and to learn about the true meaning and history of Fiesta Mexicana. The importance of volunteering/community service is that it makes us more united as a big family. What I like about the Fiesta Mexicana is that our communities come together to celebrate our Mexican culture and our food.”

“I was in our Leadership Program pre-COVID helped WHS create and maintain a Campus Pantry. I was a part of MEChA and TURNO, and participated in multiple activities, conferences, and events the Migrant Program offers. I helped with the Love Santa Program by registering families to receive gifts. My career goal is to achieve a Master’s Degree in Education as a Bilingual Elementary Teacher. I dream of teaching children in multiple languages so they can communicate and learn from other cultures. I’m interested in being on the Fiesta Court because I hope it will give my peers and other children the assurance that we can accomplish amazing things. Giving back to the community through volunteering and community service is really important because not only are we helping people, but we are also shaping ourselves. What I like most about the Fiesta Mexicana is that it brings people together. It is a beautiful celebration for young and old.”

Independence Day Sundaes

Have a blast this Independence Day by dipping into this cool sweet treat. Made with cold raspberry sorbet and vanilla ice cream, refreshing lemon juice, sweet and tart raspberries and blueberries, delicious honey, and garnished with mint. This is a cold and creamy American twist on the yogurt parfait. INGREDIENTS

SUNDAES 2 1/2 Pints Raspberry Sorbet 2 1/2 Pints Vanilla Ice Cream 1/2 Pint Blueberries 1/2 Pint Raspberries

BLUEBERRY SAUCE 1/2 Cup Honey 1/2 Pint Blueberries 2 T Lemon Juice GARNISH Mint Sprigs

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine honey and blueberries in 2-qt saucepan and bring to a boil; boil 2 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice. Transfer mixture to a blender and purée until smooth. Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate. (Can be made up to 3 days ahead.) 2. Let sorbet and ice cream soften slightly at room temperature. For each serving, scoop about 1⁄3 cup sorbet into each serving dish, then top with 1⁄3 cup vanilla ice cream (Sundaes can be assembled up to this point 8 hours ahead and placed in freezer.) 3. To serve, top each sundae with about 2 tablespoons blueberry sauce and 1⁄4 cup mixed berries. Community CPR Classes

he Woodburn Fire District is now offering CPR instruction for those that live and work within the area served by the fire district. This program is part of an effort to further improve the survivability of a cardiac arrest. CPR classes are taught by district firefighters and are being provided at the main fire station on Newberg Highway. According to American Red Cross, 475,000 Americans each year experience a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting. The early initiation of bystander CPR will sustain the life of a cardiac arrest victim while waiting for the arrival of emergency responders. In a case study conducted by the fire district involving 16 cardiac arrest incidents that have occurred in the district within the last year, 10 received bystander CPR prior to the arrival of firefighter paramedics. Of those 10 patients, 83 percent regained a spontaneous pulse and blood pressure prior to ambulance transport to a hospital emergency department. Fire Chief Joe Budge stated, “If there is a bystander trained in CPR that recognizes a cardiac arrest and is ready, willing, and able to act, they can double or triple survival rates if they begin immediate CPR. Empowering our community members to provide CPR will save lives in this community. ”

In addition to learning CPR, class participants will become knowledgeable in the use of automatic external defibrillators (AED). AED’s deliver life-saving shocks that have the ability to restart the heart of a cardiac arrest victim. These devices are found in public buildings including schools, churches, shopping malls and any place where groups of people gather. Attendees will also receive instruction on the Pulse Point App that alerts CPR trained individuals of the occurrence of a cardiac arrest within a quarter of mile radius of their location.

The district hopes to offset the $80 per person cost by establishing community partners who choose to support the program.

The community CPR program is being launched following the start of the fire district’s advanced life support (ALS) program funded by the 2018 levy that ensures that a firefighter paramedic with advanced life support training is on duty at all times. Chief Budge stated that, “the advanced life support program and community CPR initiative are part of the district’s effort to raise the percentage of cardiac survivability well above the national average. The Woodburn Fire District is extremely grateful for the support of the district’s commitment to improve and maintain the safety and well-being of the residents of the communities we serve.”

The CPR classes will be offered frequently. Class schedules are posted on the fire district website. The classes are funded by tuition charges and the district hopes to offset the $80 per person cost by establishing community partners who choose to support the program.

Exterior paint often involves multiple stories, so you’ll need a ladder to boost your reach while supporting you safely. When placing a ladder, take ground stability into account. You don’t want to sink ... when you’re 10+ feet up.

GROUND COVER

Cleaning paint debris out of bushes isn’t fun, so use a light canvas tarp to cover flower beds and shrubbery. Remove the protective covering at the end of each day so that you won’t risk killing the plants you’re trying to protect. As you place your ladders and drop cloths, keep an eye out for delicate plants or flowers. And protect any water features such as koi ponds or waterfalls.

Painter’s tape can help protect objects, such as exterior outlet boxes, utility heads, spigots and racks. Depending on the object, you can tape around them or remove them completely during your paint project.

SANDING AND SCRAPING

The real bulk of the work is surface prep. If you’re working on an unpainted surface, you can give it a quick prep and move on. Most previously painted surfaces will need loose and flaky paint scraped off and edges sanded flush. Painting over flaky paint will only result in new paint that flakes off, and skipping the sanding process will leave large, unsightly “divots” on your home. Power sanders can help speed the work, but remember respiration safety equipment.

SURFACE REPAIRS AND CLEANING

As you remove the loose paint from your home by sanding and scraping, you’ll notice areas that have become damaged. The damage might be from weather wear and tear, or animals or insects. This is the perfect time to make repairs. Once the repairs are done, you can clean off the surface with a quick wipe down or air spray. If power washing, direct the washer downward like rainfall, as siding is designed to shed rainfall and not protect from water from below.

WEATHER WATCH

Always keep one eye on the weather. Rain can shut down an exterior paint job, but many caulks and paints have a limited range of working temperatures also. Too hot, too cold, or too humid, and they’ll cure slowly or not at all. Read their labels for more info. If humid, check the previous coat before adding another. Similarly, take the path of the sun into consideration. Shade is your friend – move with it as you work – but in areas of the house with little or no direct sunlight, paint tends to set up slower. And areas that get direct sun will harden on the surface before the paint is fully cured.

FINAL TEST SWATCH

Before diving into painting, put a test swatch of paint on the surface. Be sure that it matches the exterior color you picked out. There’s nothing worse than getting halfway across a house before realizing you have the wrong shade of green or the wrong finish.

too, I had no sympathy.” Walter’s unorthodox approach, however, combined with the fact that Powell’s was open 365 days a year, staffed by passionate and knowledgeable employees, and fashioned for book lovers, created a synergy that propelled the store to success. Reflecting on the success of Powell’s Books, Michael stated in the August 23, 1981 edition of The Oregonian, that his father’s unorthodox approach worked because it was a benefit to both the bookseller and the customer. From the bookseller’s end of the equation, used books were more profitable than new ones since the profit margin (in the late 1970s and ’80s) was 50 to 60 percent on used books, versus around 40 percent on new ones. Michael explained that the customer was likely to buy a used copy, and “bless you for the bargain.” With business booming, Walter decided to move the store across the street to a larger space. The new space (the present location), previously occupied by a car dealership, expanded the square footage of the store from 24,000 to 30,000. He also convinced Michael to return to Portland and join him in operating the store. By 1982, Walter had sold the store to Michael, though he remained involved in managing the store till he passed away in 1985. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, Powell’s continued to grow at a tremendous rate, becoming one of the largest bookstores in America. This period of time saw the addition of the Anne Hughes Coffee House where customers could relax and peruse books from the store, as well as new Powell’s locations in Pioneer

Courthouse Square (Powell’s Travel Store), Powell’s Books for Cooks and Gardeners on S.E. Hawthorne, and a Technical Publications Annex near the main store on Burnside. Powell’s also expanded into the suburbs with a store in Beaverton at Cascade Plaza. In 1999, Powell’s completed construction of a $3.5 million four-story tower on its main store, increasing total retail space to 68,000 square feet. The ’90s also saw the introduction of computerization to the store, and unionization by the employees who voted to join the ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union). By the 2000s, Powell’s was also selling books online through their website, as large competitors such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble had transformed the bookselling experience with the ease of online shopping and delivery. Today, Emily Powell, Michael’s daughter, is president and owner of Powell’s Books—Michael retired in 2010, though he still works in the warehouse processing used books—and Patrick Bassett, a business consultant from Eugene, operates as CEO. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, political unrest, and labor issues that have hit Portland hard, Powell’s Books has managed to survive. Of the sprawling book empire that once spread across Portland, Powell’s now consists of its flagship store on Burnside, a sizable location at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton, and a store on Hawthorne Boulevard in Southeast Portland. In a recent article in Publisher’s Weekly, Emily stressed that many of the most critical challenges Current President & Owner, Emily Powell facing Powell’s are technology driven. The company has recently hired a new head of technology to manage its large IT department in an effort to raise their online functionality to a level sufficient to effectively meet the needs/expectations of the book-buying public, a daunting task when competing against the likes of Amazon and others. As the world changes at breakneck speed, the city of Portland along with it, just remember there are many wonderful things that have endured. For more than 50 years we have been fortunate to have the largest independent bookstore in the world in our very backyard.
