Woodburn Fire District Welcomes New Paramedics The Woodburn Fire District is proud to announce that two of the District’s firefighters will be finishing paramedic training in July. Mitchell Raines, who has been with the District for eight years, and Ryan Johnson, who has been with the District for six years, have been working towards this goal for the past 18 months; passing the National Paramedic Examination for the State of Oregon. The addition of two new paramedics to the District’s seasoned veterans, Paramedic - Engineer Robb Gramzow, and Paramedic Lieutenant Jon Koenig, brings an exciting new advanced life support (ALS) capability to the fire district and the community. Lt. Koenig has over 24 years of paramedic experience. In May of 2019, the District hired Paramedic Jesse Halpern, who rounds out this specialized team. Fire Chief Joe Budge stated, “The addition of the new paramedics to the District staff will ensure that a paramedic is on-duty at all times to serve the Woodburn and Gervais communities. The full-time ALS program represents fulfillment of a commitment made to fire district residents as part of the local option levy campaign in the fall of 2018. The levy provided funding for the paramedic training and the purchase of state of the art emergency medical equipment.” As part of the improved life-saving capability of the ALS program, the District is preparing to announce a community CPR program beginning this fall. The training of community members in CPR combined with paramedic treatment in the field has been proven to dramatically increase the survivability of cardiac arrest.

Bear in mind that availability may change based on the weather and the growing season.

As you drive into this lovely farm you’ll be welcomed by rows of lavender surrounding the parking area, leading you to the large barn that is over 100 years old. Surrounding the barn are dozens of beautiful hanging flower arrangements that are available for purchase. The barn is actually the farm store, where you can purchase fresh berries that have already been picked, frozen berries, all sorts of preserves, and even fresh corn. You are also encouraged to bring your own containers (or buy one of theirs) and venture out to the fields to pick as many berries as you’d like. This pick-your-own option allows you to fully immerse yourself in the traditional summer experience of berry picking. Boones Ferry Berry Farms offers a large selection of berries to choose from, including different varieties of each species. Currently the fields are open for U-Pick strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and cherries, all for $2.00 per pound. They may even

Connecting with local neighbors and supporting the community is also important at Boones Ferry Berry Farms. In their store they offer a variety of products from other local farms, such as honey, CBD & hemp products, pickled vegetables, jams, dressings, and delicious seasonings. You can also get frozen mixed or separated berries by the bag, which are perfect to use for baking or in smoothies. If you’re headed out to the fields to pick your own, be sure to keep in mind a few of the farm rules: • Check in before and after picking • No vehicles in the U-Pick fields • No animals allowed in the store or the fields (Service animals allowed) • Walk only in the rows, not on the black plastic where the product grows • Be respectful

Safety is especially important at this time, and rules have also been put in place to protect customers and staff inside the store. This includes requiring masks to be worn in the store, limiting store capacity, and asking visitors to maintain 6 feet of distance. Additionally no open food or drink is allowed in the store, and they ask that there be no sampling or touching of the berries. They are also taking extra measures to sanitize surfaces and have added hand washing stations outside.

Thankfully for residents of Woodburn, you don’t have to look far to find the perfect place for your self-care; Focus Fusion Massage and Wellness is the place to go. Lowell Welch, the owner of Focus Fusion, has been a licensed massage therapist since 2011, when he graduated from the Everest Institute in Tigard. He gained experience at a few different massage parlors throughout the greater Portland area before venturing down to Woodburn and opening his very own place. Prior to studying massage therapy Lowell served in the military, and although he valued his time in service to his country, he always knew his real passion was to help people in a more “hands on” way. He puts great value in understanding how the human body works and finding productive therapies to help relieve muscular pain. He is very open with his clients and is happy to explain the various techniques he uses. Sometimes he’ll even provide some general instruction for methods that people can use at home if they are in pain and can’t make an appointment. His goal is to help all of his clients experience a better quality of life, and he sees the value in using education to empower them to help themselves. At Focus Fusion, there are a wide range of massage services available. Lowell is qualified to provide everything from a relaxing Swedish massage to sports massage, pregnancy massage, and myofascial release, which is focused on repairing the connective tissues between muscles. Many of his massage therapies are focused on healing injuries, and he offers special packages for those injured in a car accident or who are referred for medical massage. Often these will be covered by insurance. One of Lowell’s most prominent memories was when a client who was preparing to have surgery came to see him first to see what he could do. The client walked in with a limp, so Lowell assessed the problematic area and used his knowledge and skills to provide what relief he could. When the client left the appointment he was no longer limping, and Lowell later found out that the client had experienced such great relief that he cancelled his surgery. Lowell has worked at the Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene doing massage therapy for the elite track and field athletes of the United States Olympic Team. He has also done volunteer work for the American Cancer Society helping with Hood to Coast, the M.S. Society Bike event, and the Agape Camp for Kids, an outdoor program designed for children with cancer. Working with the local community to help others is very important to Lowell, and he finds great reward in giving back. During the current pandemic, Lowell is taking all recommended cautionary measures to keep his clients safe. He is following all sanitation guidelines, including wearing a mask and sanitizing thoroughly before and after seeing each client. alley Pacific Floral has been creating beautiful and unique floral designs and delivering flowers to the Woodburn area since 1973. They are a family owned and operated floral shop that offers flower arrangements and greens as well as blooming plants, including a nice selection of European Basket Gardens. Valley Pacific Floral also offers a large selection of gourmet gift baskets and candy bar bouquets. Owner Cindy Wurdinger Kelly has loved flowers and plants since she was just a young sprout herself. Growing up in the Woodburn area, she took every opportunity she got to work with plants of all kinds, even if it was just pulling weeds. As she grew older, and her green thumb grew with her, Cindy got a job in a local floral shop, learning how to create beautiful bouquets and floral designs. She later went to Clackamas Community College and graduated with a degree in horticulture, expanding her knowledge of plants and the planting industry. Eventually, Cindy was able to buy that very same floral shop where she had worked years before. Valley Pacific Floral is a full-service floral shop with a huge delivery range that includes Woodburn, Hubbard, Gervais, Aurora, Canby, Wilsonville, Molalla, St. Paul, Donald, Silverton, Mt. Angel, Keizer, Scotts Mills and Brooks. The flowers are seasonal and come from Cindy’s farm, where she can monitor the growth of the plants with tender care. When the flowers from her farm have run out she outsources to other flower farmers in the area. Keeping her business local is very important to Cindy. Through the years, Valley Pacific Floral has helped many brides plan for their special day. They also create arrangements for corporate events, funerals, and nearly any other event happening locally. Cindy is proud to say that their creations have been featured at many prestigious events throughout Oregon, and although most events have been suspended recently, they are still offering curbside drop offs and same-day local flower delivery to all of Woodburn and the surrounding cities. In addition to custom arrangements, they offer bulk flowers at a significant price reduction for any brides or party planners who enjoy doing it themselves. ZUCCHINI & CHEESE DROP BISCUITS

Does your summer garden have you swimming in zucchini? Can’t even give it all away? Even the greatest zucchini lover among us can only eat so much zucchini bread... and cake... and cookies... Time for a new way to use up that zucchini. These biscuits are easy to prepare and make a delicious and savory addition to any meal. Yield: 1 dozen Prep: 25 min Bake: 25 min Total: approx. 1 Hour

INGREDIENTS • 3/4 cup shredded zucchini • 1-1/4 teaspoons salt, divided • 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese • 1/4 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese • 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese • 2 tablespoons finely chopped oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, patted dry • 2 tablespoons minced fresh basil or 2 teaspoons dried basil • 1 cup 2% milk

TO BAKE 1. Preheat oven to 425°. Place zucchini in a colander over a plate; sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and toss. Let stand 10 minutes. Rinse and drain well. Squeeze zucchini to remove excess liquid. Pat dry. 2. In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and remaining salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in zucchini, cheeses, tomatoes and basil. Add milk; stir just until moistened. 3. Drop by scant 1/3 cupfuls into a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Bake until golden brown, 22-26 minutes. Serve warm.

ndependence Day in the United States of America is not only the most widely celebrated holiday during the month of July, but one of the biggest holidays of the entire year. The United States is not the only country to celebrate such a special occasion this month, however. More than 20 other countries celebrate their independence in July as well. The most familiar foreign celebration of independence to us here in the U.S. is that of our neighbors to the north; Canada Day, which occurs on July 1st. Similar to the 4th of July here, it is a federal statutory holiday that is often referred to as Canada’s Birthday, and it commemorates the passing of the Constitution Act of 1867. This brought the former colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia together into a single dominion under the British Empire. Although Canada technically remained a British colony until 1982, it gained increased political control and became largely self-governing long before. In another similarity to Independence Day in the U.S. celebrations of Canada Day often involve large outdoor events, parades, barbecues, concerts, and of course, fireworks. July 14th marks the French celebration of “Bastille Day,” though it is actually called that only in English speaking countries. In France it is called Fête nationale, which translates to “national celebration.” This day memorializes the storming of the Bastille in 1789, a turning point in the French Revolution, as well as another holiday that followed exactly one year later, called Fête de la Fédération. The latter holiday was established to celebrate the unity of the French people and symbolize

peace. Bastille Day is a public holiday in France, and is celebrated with parades, musical performances, communal meals, and ever spectacular displays of fireworks. The oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe has been held in Paris on Bastille Day every year since 1880. The 17th of July is Constitution Day in South Korea, commemorating the day that the South Korean constitution was proclaimed in 1948. After the Korean Peninsula was liberated from Japanese Imperial rule in 1945, the area immediately became caught in a cold-war struggle between the Soviet Union and the United States, delaying the opportunity to hold a democratic election for three years. Constitution Day became a “no-work” public holiday in 2008, and in celebration of the day citizens hang the national flag and special events such as marathons are held. The Peruvian National Holidays, or Fiestas Patrias peruanas, are celebrated on July 28th and 29th to commemorate Peru’s independence from the Spanish Empire. Along with Christmas, Fiestas Patrias is one of the most important celebrations of the year for Peruvians, and tourism tends to increase during these holidays. Flags are typically displayed nationwide for the entire month of July, and at dawn on the 28th a 21 cannon salute begins flag-raising ceremonies as Peru remembers the anniversary of its birth. Many ceremonial events involving government officials are held, and the Peruvian President addresses the nation annually at this time. An enormous military parade is held on the 29th to honor the Peruvian Armed Forces and National Police. 
