ANNUAL FIREFIGHTER

Holiday Food Drive 2020 has been a challenging year for many people. Activities that many of us look forward to every year were often placed on hold or cancelled altogether, and the Annual Firefighter Food Drive was no different. However, this did not deter the local fire districts from finding a way to help community members in need this holiday season. Instead of driving through neighborhoods with sirens and lights and collecting food donations as they usually do, the Woodburn & Hubbard Fire Districts set up donation sites at the Woodburn Fire District main station and in the parking lots at the Woodburn Premium Outlet Mall, Bi-Mart, Woodburn Estates & Golf, and at St. Agnes Church

in Hubbard to collect monetary donations. The districts were able to raise $6,860 to assist Love Santa, Inc. in purchasing 450 food boxes to help feed families throughout our community. Each food box was packed with $100 worth of essential food items, including peanut butter, canned soup, meat and vegetables, pasta, potatoes, milk, fresh fruit, eggs, and other non-perishable items that will help sustain families in need. Fire Chief Joe Budge noted, “This is the 16th year that fire districts have partnered with Love Santa. We appreciate the opportunity to support this organization and help families in need throughout our communities.”

ake up and smell the delicious coffee! The next time you are in Aurora visiting the adorable antique shops, or even if you’re just passing through, make sure to drive up and get some caffeinated goodness from Chug Coffee. You may love it so much that you’ll want to come to town just so you can stop in for a pick-me-up! This coffee cart location is brand new, having just opened in late summer of 2020, but the wonderful people who own and operate it are no strangers to the area. Samantha Ribb and her mom previously ran the R&R Cafe that used to be inside of the Wilsonville Subaru dealership. Things were going well and they were looking to expand and get into the drive-thru business. Everything was moving along with plans to open a supplemental location to the cafe... but then COVID struck. The dealership was forced to close the cafe to keep exposure at a minimum. As time progressed and they got all the necessary permits and forms approved, the new coffee-cart endeavor became more of a reality than the cafe, which was sadly never allowed

to reopen. Chalk it up to another casualty in the pandemic’s path of destruction. But while one door has closed for Sam, another has gently swung open. Chug Coffee is a passion project for her, and she is very excited to now be serving amazing coffee drinks and pastries in the Aurora community! Why the name “Chug,” you may ask? Well, Sam is a serious dog lover and her two “Chugs” (Chihuahua-Pug mixes) are the inspiration for the name. She wanted to incorporate them somehow into the theme of the business, and one day it dawned on her to use their breed name as a cute play on words. After all, who doesn’t need to “chug” a big cup of coffee early in the morning, right? The name fit perfectly, and the logo even includes the silhouette of her adorable little chug Jack! You’ll also notice when you visit that most of the specialty drinks they serve are either named after her dogs or inspired by them. There’s The Jack, The Lula, The Underbite, The Blue Dog Fog, Puppy Kisses, and Paws on the Beach; all of which are extremely clever and extremely delicious! They also feature two seasonal drinks, which recently were The Muttcracker (see what she did there?) and The Peppermint “Bark.” With a menu this whimsical and creative, not to mention tasty, how can you resist? For other dog parents who have their furbabies along for the trip, Chug Coffee even serves free whip cups for pups! Being more limited on space in a coffee cart, they can’t serve all the same sandwiches, soups and meals they used to provide at the cafe, but Sam’s standards for quality certainly have not waned just because the menu may be a bit more limited. Being true ambassadors of the local communities they live in and serve, they get everything they can from local companies. Their pastries come from Cookie Monkey in Portland, and their coffee beans come from Dillanos Coffee Roasters, located just a few hours up I-5 in Sumner, Washington. The blend they serve is a medium dark roast with a deliciously nutty, slightly chocolatey flavor. They also serve White Coffee, which is

something many of us may have never heard of, but definitely should try! Sam explains that White Coffee is brewed from beans that are only just lightly toasted which provides a significantly smoother, nuttier flavor to their profile. It’s the perfect solution for people who want to drink something coffee-ish, but aren’t necessarily big fans of espresso. She said this is a newer thing on the coffee scene in many parts of the country, but it’s very popular in the Northwest. Sam loves what she does and she truly enjoys concocting new and delicious flavors for her customers to enjoy. She is like the proverbial “mad scientist” when it comes to this part of her job, but when it has such delicious results, who can complain? She experiments with all sorts of different flavor combinations to get the perfect mixtures, making her menu extremely interesting and versatile. I, for one, can’t wait to try The Lula, which is white chocolate, brown sugar, cinnamon, hazelnut, and a split shot of half regular espresso, half white. Or perhaps The Underbite, which is a dark chocolate mocha with a slight spicy kick. Hmm... decisions, decisions. They also have a nice selection of concoctions made with teas and energy drinks, as well as hot cocoa and italian sodas. Their energy drinks are of special note since they don’t use the typical brands full of synthetic ingredients, which often have a chemical flavor or leave a metallic aftertaste. At Chug, they only use Lotus Brand energy concentrates, which are plant-based and naturally crafted using botanicals, superfruits, and natural caffeine from

green coffee beans. The result is a healthier and tastier energy drink with no lingering metallic aftertaste. Of course, it wouldn’t be on the Chug Coffee menu if Sam hadn’t come up with some fun and fantastic flavor combinations. Puppy Kisses uses Pink Lotus Energy with coconut, guava, red raspberry and a splash of coconut milk, while Paws on the Beach consists of Blue Lotus Energy with passionfruit, pineapple, coconut, and coconut milk. They are absolutely delicious and a refreshing relief from the artificial energy drinks served elsewhere. Sam, her mom and her crew are local people who love the communities they live in and serve. Sam’s only complaint about her new endeavor is that it’s much more difficult for her to talk to her customers now, beyond the standard pleasantries that get passed through the window with your drink. Her favorite part of the job (besides being a flavor-mixing mad scientist) is getting to know her customers, and she is eagerly looking forward to getting out into the community once restrictions are lifted to start sponsoring local sports teams and participating in local fundraising activities. INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small onion, diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper a pinch of red pepper flakes (optional) One 5 ounce can artichoke hearts, drained 5 ounces frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed 1/4 cup cashew cream (use softened cream cheese for Keto) 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, optional (omit for dairy-free) DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Once hot, add onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 7 minutes. 2. Add in salt, black pepper, pepper flakes, artichokes and spinach and cook until heated through, about 2 minutes. 3. Remove from heat and stir in cashew cream or cream cheese. 4. Transfer mixture to a food processor or high-speed blender and pulse until coarsely chopped. 5. Taste and adjust spices and salt as desired. How about one that’s got the foundation and experience of a national chain, but is still locally owned and operated by the nicest gentleman you could meet? How about one which consistently and expediently serves fantastic Italian food, made fresh to order, at an incredibly attractive price point? If you haven’t had the good fortune of trying this new gem here in town, do yourself a favor and check it out now. The name of the place is Fazoli’s, and once you’ve tried it, you’ll never forget it. Fazoli’s is not “fast food.” If you’ve been hesitant to pay them a visit, put your mind at ease. This is considered “fast-casual food,” meaning we get the best of both worlds: the quick, efficient service of a fast food restaurant partnered with the higher quality, fresher food of a casual dining experience.

Jim had worked in the high-tech manufacturing industry for nearly 30 years, and another 9 passed before he was in a place to take action on this opportunity. He never wavered from his goal, and his determination paid off when his very first Fazoli’s franchise opened near the Woodburn Outlet Stores in October of 2018. In the first year and a half after the restaurant opened, Jim was able to establish his business within the community, garnering rave reviews from locals and building a loyal following of regular patrons. Then COVID hit, and just like for so many other local businesses, it’s been a struggle ever since.

Thankfully, Fazoli’s is uniquely positioned to continue serving their guests due to their drive-thru, online ordering, and catering services. However, they are still relatively new to town and haven’t had as much of a chance to build a name for themselves as Jim would have liked. Brand recognition has been one of their biggest challenges, especially since this is the first location in the area, and very few people are familiar with the name. We are hoping to change that! Which brings us to the food, the entire reason to go there. Obviously, we could go into great depth about all of their amazing choices, but we’ll leave it to you to check out their menu online and see for yourself. Fair warning - your mouth may be watering by the time you finish! The bottom line is this: if you like Italian Food but you’re tired of the overdone, overpriced sit-down restaurants, you’re going to love Fazoli’s! raig Holbrook is well-known in his hometown of Canby and the surrounding areas for his love of the stage. He’s directed numerous productions at the Canby Fine Arts Center over the years, including Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and he’s performed in or worked backstage for numerous shows throughout the Portlandmetro area. But if you step into his woodshop, you’ll quickly see that the theater is not his only artistic passion. “I started doing carpentry from building sets,” Craig explained. “When you’re directing a play, a lot of times, the building of the set falls to you too.” While working at Portland Center Stage, he discovered “woodturning,” which is simply the craft of shaping wood using hand-held tools and a lathe. Just like a pottery wheel, a wood lathe can be used to create an almost infinite number of patterns, objects and designs. The prop mistress there would use a lathe to create custom table legs for productions. “Really anything custom that they needed like that, she’d create it on the lathe,” he recalled. “I thought that was really cool.”

His favorite part of the process is the thrill of discovery. Often the final product looks very different from the block it started out as. “Sometimes, you never know what you’re going to get until you start turning and put some finish on it, and then you just say, ‘Oh man, this is beautiful.’” Craig has passed the craft onto others, including his Cub Scout troop when he was a local den master. “I taught them to turn a pen for their moms on Mother’s Day,” he said. “The boys really liked it. They felt like they’d made something a lot better than the usual glued macaroni.”
