A
s the old adage states, “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.” That is the inspiration behind Arlene Anderson’s business Arlene Cuisine, an amazing A-Z, all-in-one event planning and catering service. After years of volunteering in a variety of capacities for both professional and personal events, it became evident that Arlene not only loved the work, but she was also exceptionally good at it. She began her own company tentatively in 2015, more as a hobby than an entrepreneurial venture, but it quickly turned into a full-fledged and burgeoning small business. In 2018, Arlene Cuisine officially became a fully licensed and insured LLC. When planning any sort of event, whether it’s an important dinner party, a wedding, a reception or an office party, the most critical ingredients are good food and good organization. Good food with no organization leads to a lot of stress, confusion, and potential catastrophes hovering in the wings. Conversely, good organization with bad food means people are comfortable knowing exactly what’s going on and where everything is including the garbage, which is where they are all headed to throw out their half-eaten meals!
The balance of these two factors can be exceptionally difficult to manage, and that’s why so many of us rely on an experienced professional to make it happen. Instead of pulling your hair out trying to put together a spectacular event all on your own, how about sitting down with the kindest, most considerate woman you could possibly meet to go over every last detail, and then entrusting her to make it happen? How about, once the decisions are made, keeping contact with that same woman throughout the entire process, and then having your event go off without a hitch because everything was superbly organized, surpassing your highest expectations? That is what Arlene Cuisine can do for you. On top of being the perfect solution to all of your event planning problems, Arlene Cuisine is also a local family-run business. Arlene is the mastermind behind the organization, and her husband Kip is her right-hand man and catering pit-master. He smokes a mean slab of meat that all your guests will be sure to enjoy! Her daughter Liz is also great at organization and helps out whenever she can behind-the-scenes. You may be wondering how a catering service survives during times like these. The answer, like for so many other businesses, involves a good deal of creativity that enables them to adjust and modify their business model. While Arlene is still open to catering for gatherings that abide by all recommended guidelines, she has also adopted a new avenue of business: home delivery! The concept is fairly straightforward. She cooks one family-style meal per week, typically consisting of 4 courses: an entrée, a starch, a vegetable, and a dessert. The meals are listed on her Facebook page, and if you like what you see, simply place your order by Tuesday and she will have it ready by Friday for either pick-up or delivery. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy a wonderful meal, without having any of the headache or stress of planning and preparing it yourself. Arlene plans a different meal every week, although the most popular ones will most likely make a return from time to time.

CONFUSION, AND POTENTIAL CATASTROPHES HOVERING IN THE WINGS Arlne is particularly interested in getting the word out about office and work events. She understands, of course, that many offices are closed or only running at partial capacity at this time. That said, meetings haven’t stopped completely, and everyone still needs to eat lunch, right? Arlene excels in making the kinds of comfort food that we all grew up with and cherish; our favorite meals that mom always lovingly prepared, and that we will still drive hundreds or even thousands of miles to get home for during the holidays. They aren’t fancy, fussy “elevated” meals with tiny portions, just good old-fashioned hearty and delicious meals made to taste great! Arlene says with a big smile that she grew up on Betty Crocker, and though her food may reflect the nostalgia of that era and bring back memories of grandma’s kitchen, she makes everything from the highest quality and freshest ingredients. She has also recently started partnering with local businesses to procure her supplies, including Baker’s Prairie Bakery and B’s Bake Shoppe (both located in Canby). Both partners provide her with the best bread, rolls, and baked goods available in the area. If you have dietary restrictions, Arlene is always happy to make adjustments and accommodate her client’s needs!
In September, when so many of us were impacted by the terrible forest fires in the area, there were two events, one in Colton and one in Molalla, which were fundraising in support of the firefighters and also the families who had been evacuated. Not only did Arlene Cuisine show up to both events with their mobile kitchen/food cart, but they served free meals to all of those impacted families (both meals served on-site and also take-home meals). Their efforts helped to raise over $1700 for the cause! Arlene, her husband, and their crew are a true community treasure! While winter holidays bring lots of fun and festivities, they also bring the potential for danger to our furry family members. Make sure your pets stay safe during the holidays by following these guidelines:

◾ Make sure your pet doesn’t have any access to food that contains chocolate, xylitol, grapes/ raisins, onions or other toxic foods. ◾ Don’t leave your pet alone in the room with lit candles, a decorated tree or potpourri. ◾ Keep holiday plants (especially holly, mistletoe and lillies) out of reach of pets. ◾ Consider leaving the tinsel off your tree if you have a cat.

INGREDIENTS 1 c. pecans 1 c. confectioners’ sugar, divided 1 c. (2 sticks) unsalted cold butter, cut into small pieces 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 2 c. all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled, plus more for working 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon DIRECTIONS Pulse pecans and 3/4 cup sugar in a food processor until finely ground, 10 to 12 times. Add butter and vanilla. Pulse until smooth, 14 to 16 times. Add flour, salt, and cinnamon. Process until combined, 15 to 20 seconds. Roll between parchment paper to 1/4-inch thickness. Chill until firm, 30 minutes or up to 2 days. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Using a floured snowflake-shaped cookie cutter, cut out cookies and place on prepared baking sheets, spacing 11/2 inches apart. Bake until lightly golden brown around the edges, 7 to 10 minutes. Cool on baking sheets on wire racks. Dust with remaining 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar. Recipe reprinted from countryliving.com

WOODBURN A 2020 RECAP

W
oodburn, as I’m sure we all know, is a wonderfully beautiful and intrinsically diverse city that is home to some of the state’s best kept secrets. We play host to treasured annual events like the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, the Fiesta Mexicana, and the Bauman’s Farm Harvest Festival, and we claim some of the areas most popular attractions, including the Woodburn Premium Outlets, the Woodburn Dragstrip, and the Settlemier house, as well as miles of well-maintained outdoor hiking trails. Woodburn has a lot to offer local residents and anyone looking for a new place to call home. After having the opportunity to talk with Woodburn’s Public Affairs and Communications Manager, Tommy Moore, and Economic Development Director, Jamie Johnk, it’s abundantly clear that the local officials here are a big part of what makes this city so great. COVID-19 has, to say the least, made life more challenging for all of us this year, and more so for some than others, but it’s the tenacity, perseverance, and ingenuity of our business owners and community leaders that has helped to mitigate the damages and kept things from being as bad as they could’ve been. The tireless efforts of these people, in conjunction with their enduring sense of community and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, is what’s going to get us through this. And after speaking with Tommy and Jamie, I have no doubt that Woodburn is going to make it through this difficult year with flying colors! Believe it or not, during the course of 2020, even with all of the complications due to shutdowns and COVID restrictions, to forest fires, and even social unrest, Woodburn has nevertheless seen great progress and development in the downtown area. 20 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
The largest, most recent, and most exciting example of this is the 1st Street Renewal Project, which is part of the downtown revitalization plan and larger Urban Renewal Program established in 2001. Many of you may remember Front Street going through the revitalization process (also part of this larger program) just a few years back. Once that project was completed, the next thing on the agenda was 1st Street and 2 years ago, that became the focus. The Urban Renewal Agency was smart, and written into the original project guidelines were limits of maximum indebtedness. So rather than jumping into these projects underfunded and getting themselves into trouble, they held off, waiting and saving until the time was right. Only then with great forethought, planning, and organization, did they begin. Of course, it seems inevitable that every project will run into unexpected complications and delays, and the 1st Street Project is no exception. Part of the project included the demolition of some older defunct businesses, the removal of the old asphalt from the streets, and the replacement of the infrastructure underneath (water systems/drainage, sewer pipes and data systems). One of the older businesses no longer in existence was a gas station and the city knew they would be contending with at least 3 buried gas tanks. By the end of that phase of the project however, they had uncovered (and worked out how to properly decommission and dispose of) not 3, but 12 gas tanks! Jamie said all they could do by that point was laugh, but they weren’t going to let any challenges like this stop them. They persevered, and at long last the project is now complete. What a difference it’s made! As you walk that 1st Street corridor between Harrison and Cleveland, the
visible upgrades are astounding. Newly paved streets and sidewalks, new pedestrian level lighting, new benches and garbage cans - it’s a whole new area! In addition, there are a multitude of new design elements: the huge medallion in the pavement commemorating the establishment of Woodburn as a city, newly planted trees (5 different varieties, all voted on by local residents), beautifully designed bronze statues, and of course, the gorgeous murals painted on the sides of some of the buildings (thanks to the incredible talents of J&S Signs). A favorite landmark on 1st Street, the Pix Theater, was sadly deemed unsalvageable and had to be demolished. Tommy and Jamie both admitted how much they hated having to tear down such a beloved Woodburn icon, but by the time something could be done to save it, it was already too late. After much consideration, the council decided that whatever replaced the Pix would need to meet 3 requirements: 1- it would need to commemorate the theater, 2- it would need to use the space for public use, and 3- pieces of the old theater would need to be used in its construction. With that in mind, the city has since built a new (and much needed) parking lot, honoring every one one of those stipulations: J&S Signs painted a vibrant and colorful commemorative mural of the theater in its heyday on the adjacent building, the parking lot is public, and pieces of the glass, tiles, and the theater’s marquee sign, are all being used in future Front Street projects. This theater and the way its demolition was handled
represents a lot of what the Woodburn Mayor, the City Council, and the Urban Renewal Agency are all about. They believe in honoring and remembering the past, while respectfully renewing and carefully rebuilding towards an even brighter future. This is a community of passionate, hardworking people who look out for their neighbors. It’s a city steeped in rich history and ethnic diversity, where that diversity is embraced and addressed as an opportunity, not a challenge - an opportunity to learn about and from one another, and to communicate and to thrive together. Tommy and Jamie are just two examples of the kind, conscientious and dedicated public servants who call Woodburn home, and we are lucky to have people like this planning, organizing and representing us to help our community move forward. Even in these difficult times, our city leaders have proven themselves to be completely and sincerely invested in keeping us on the track to success, and they have even more wonderful plans for the future. As COVID restrictions are lifted, there are a host of new projects in the works that will soon begin to see the light of day. Again, as we all know, Woodburn is a great place to live and i t ’s o n l y getting better! ◾

erhaps more than any other year, this holiday season is a great time to get crafty and creative! With everyone stuck inside even more than usual, it can be easy to go stir crazy, but a fun project will really help to ease the boredom and restlessness. This project is especially great because at the end you’ll have beautiful ornaments to hang on your tree or around the house for years to come!
W H AT YO U ’ L L N E E D : • Wire snowflake forms (these can be purchased online or find a tutorial to make your own) • Assorted beads (make sure the holes are large enough for the wire) • Needle nose pliers • Ribbon for hanging (or an ornament hook)
S T E P S: • Bead one prong of the wire form, leaving about ½ inch at the end. • Use pliers to bend the end of the wire back and close it to make a loop. • Repeat steps 1 & 2 for all of the remaining prongs. • Insert ribbon through one of the end loops and tie the ends together, or simply use an ornament hook. *Instructions from happinessishomemade.net
