FOB Taproom By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

f they gave awards for being the happiest about restaurants, bars and other businesses being fully reopened for indoor service, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better candidate for the top prize than Steve Puga, owner of FOB Taproom in Canby. Without a kitchen or even video lottery machines to fall back on, FOB (Friends Of Beer) had even fewer options than many other restaurants, pubs and other local watering holes that could offer take-out food and drinks while COVID-19 regulations forced them to keep their tables empty.

For months FOB was limited to simply offering to-go growlers before new guidelines opened up the possibilities of outdoor service. The taproom took full advantage of that in two ways: installing a roll-up door over a bar that opens two ways, and putting up a large tent in the parking lot that the City of Canby helped make possible. On the positive side, the outdoor bar was something that Steve has always wanted to do. “I was born and raised in Portland - don’t hold that against me,” he jokes. “But I wanted to have something like this, an outdoor, two-sided bar. And thankfully, we were able to get this done in the summertime and have this available for customers.” The months that FOB was limited to growler service only was a difficult time, he admits, not just financially, but emotionally as he watched his normally busy taproom sit empty and quiet,

day after day. But now Steve is all smiles again. “It’s all so much better now that we’re open,” he says. “I’m just happy to see our regulars coming back, enjoying things. And thankfully, a lot of new people who have moved into town are starting to find us. Seeing customers inside is a nice change.” Steve gives a lot of credit to FOB’s regular patrons for seeing them through, particularly the taproom’s Mug Club members. “Those guys really kept us alive through the whole Covid thing,” he says. “Every day I’m here, I thank them personally. I love this place,and if it wasn’t for them, we honestly wouldn’t be here. That’s not an exaggeration; it’s absolutely true. My wife and I tell them all the time, ‘If it wasn’t for you guys, we would have shut down long ago.’” The FOB is a true family-owned and run business. Steve and his son Mitch are intimately involved with all aspects of the taproom, including carefully curating the ever-changing menu of 35 craft beers, ciders, wines and other beverages offered on tap. “As a family-owned, independent business, we take a lot of pride in getting our hands on as many Northwest beers as we can,” Steve says. “At the same time, there are plenty of other beers out there that are delicious, and we always support the small companies and self-distributors. If there’s delicious beer out there, I don’t care what country it’s from or what part of the United States, we’re going to take a look at it. But we think very carefully about the different things that we bring in, and what would be fun for the community to try.” Another thing Steve has focused on since purchasing the bar in October of 2018 is improving on what was already one of its strong points: its laid-back, yet professional and inviting atmosphere. He has sought to capture the spirit of German pubs, which he frequented during his previous career in supply chain logistics that often took him overseas. “One thing that was really obvious about all the places I went to in Germany was that they were very open to all,” he recalls. “That’s what we’ve tried to create here. You can walk in whether you’re wearing a suit or a T-shirt and jeans. It’s very inviting to everybody. IT BURNS!! Tips For Protecting Your Dog’s Paws From Hot Pavement By Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

Though dogs still need their exercise all through the summer, it’s important to remember that higher temperatures bring extra hazards to regular canine activity. Not only are hot cars dangerous, but many pet owners don’t realize the danger posed by hot pavement, especially when it comes to the pads of a dog’s paws. Asphalt and cement can get hot enough to cook an egg, so of course severe burns can occur (both to human feet and canine paws) from prolonged contact with these surfaces. Here’s how to protect your dog from this painful problem: WALK WHEN IT’S COOL. Avoid the peak heat of the day and take your dog out either in the morning or late evening when the sun is lower. Bear in mind that pavement can retain heat for a while, so even in the evening you should be mindful of the surface temperature. CHECK THE PAVEMENT TEMPERATURE WITH YOUR OWN HAND OR FOOT. Hold it there for several seconds to gauge how hot the surface is. If it’s too hot for you to touch for 30 seconds, then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. DON’T STAY OUT AS LONG. Most dogs love to go for good long walks to expend their energy, but in the summer, especially in the heat of midday, be sure not to keep them out for too long. Remember, dogs get hot much faster than people do. Pay attention to signs of overheating while you are out. STAY ON GRASS OR UNPAVED AREAS. Grass, barkdust, and other unpaved surfaces do not retain heat the way pavement does. Stick to these places if you’re not sure how hot the asphalt or cement is. TRY A PAIR OF DOG SHOES. If you simply can’t avoid walking when it is hot and you can’t stay off pavement, then you may need to resort to dog shoes to keep your furbaby protected. Rubber soles offer the best protection. It may take awhile for your dog to get used to wearing shoes (and some never get used to it), so be patient with them while they acclimate to their new accessories. 12 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

eff spends his days painting in a studio on a Chehalem Mountain ridge in Cornelius, which he shares with his wife Toni, who does ceramics work. Interestingly, it took two hairpin career changes to get there. The original plan was to play the piano, so he got formal training in composition at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Then, he spent the next 30 years as a firefighter before retiring as a Hillsboro fire marshal in 2005. Then came the Rothko. For a full half hour in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, he stood in front of a painting by the legendary painter, “transfixed.” Toni suggested that if he loved it so much he should paint himself. He’s been doing so for ten years - all the while listening to music, his first love. The following conversation has been edited for length and clarity: How do you get your ideas or inspiration for a piece? “I think a lot about color, shapes, and the sequence of making a piece. Concepts just assemble in my head. Occasionally I have a complete vision & some of my best stuff comes then. Generally, it’s an interactive process. Accidents are the path to original work. In other words, I paint over stuff a lot. What I don’t do is paint ideas or messages or intend meaning. I do it to please myself.” Describe the process of making a painting, from start to finish. “In the beginning, I just bought paint and

started doing something. It was the way I learned what I could do. Nowadays I have some concept either hazy or formed, colors being the first concern. As I’ve gained more control over what I want, I take more time, work in layers and try to discipline myself to not work too fast. Paintings now take a week or more.” Do you listen to music while painting? “I can’t paint without it. All kinds. From Debussy to Miles Davis, lots of R&B, ambient, Afro-pop, Brazilian and Jon Hassell. I have no doubt it influences the work in some way but it’s subconscious, if it does.” And you share the space with Toni? “Toni started doing hand-built ceramics in high school and always wanted to get back to it. She makes dinnerware, vases, nameplates/signs and is looking for new niches to work. HOW IS IT AUGUST ALREADY?! How is it already August in one of the weirdest years I’ve ever experienced in my lifetime? I know, that makes me sound old, “the days are long but the years are short” is such a true statement. We’ve been busy building our new brand, hanging out near every body of water we can and truly just enjoying our Summer with our closest friends and family. One of our favorite traditions is our cousin campout; we have five other families circle their tents and trailers in the backyard and we BBQ, play wiffle ball, roast marshmallows, and swim in the pool until we are too tired to move! When we bought our house five years ago, I was very happy where we were. But I knew we’d outgrow it and

the opportunity for our kids to run in the backyard until dark playing all sorts of make believe games couldn’t happen on our golf course lot. So we packed up and moved. We now deal with mice, dust, loud traffic and a whole host of other issues that you have in the country that you don’t have on the golf course and traded it for everything the country does have to offer. A huge garden, our own play structure and all the room for 13 cousins and second cousins to run around together as their great grandparents smile down from heaven. I’m sure they are so proud that we take the effort to reserve time for one another and carry on their visions and values they built their families on. Until we meet, be well.

Refreshing Summer Drinks Hot summer weather means we need to stay hydrated! Make sure to drink plenty of water, of course, but when you want something more flavorful, try out some of these ideas to keep things interesting.

WATERMELON LEMONADE:

CUCUMBER MINT GLOW WATER

DOLE WHIP LEMONADE

Combine half watermelon juice and half lemonade. To make it even more fun, freeze watermelon chunks ahead of time to use in place of ice cubes. They won’t water down your drink, and you have a snack once they thaw!

In a pitcher, mix 3 cans of seltzer with slices of cucumber and lemon, then add 3 sprigs of mint. Stir/muddle to release more flavor. So refreshing!

In a blender combine 1 cup frozen pineapple, 1 cup lemonade, and 1/2 cup coconut milk. Blend until smooth, then pour and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings *recipes reprinted from delish.com

CELEBRATING SMILES National Smile Week By Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

he second week of August is National Smile Week, an effort that was primarily started as a campaign to focus on dental health. While oral hygiene is of the utmost importance and should not be overlooked, I think that this year in particular (after 18 months of covering our faces), National Smile Week may have acquired an additional layer of significance. How long has it been since we ventured out into public and could clearly see the faces of everyone around us? How many months have we gone without seeing the smiles of the people we interact with on a daily basis? After all of this time, let’s take the opportunity to appreciate the impact that smiling has on our lives, our relationships, and our wellbeing. First of all, smiling can actually make you happier. We’ve all heard the saying “fake it till you make it,” and smiling is a great example of how this works. Say you’re having a terrible, no-good, very bad day. You can frown your way through it, which will actually make your mood worse, or you can smile. The facial muscles used to smile trigger neurotransmitters in the brain that have the power to make us feel happier. These include the natural antidepressants dopamine and serotonin, as well as endorphins, which help us relax. Ever heard the old adage that “laughter is the best medicine”? There’s a reason for that. In order to laugh you must smile first, which we already know changes brain chemistry, and when you have more “happy hormones” that directly affects your body. Smiling can not only reduce stress and make us feel happier, but some studies have found that it may also improve our immune systems and help us fight off illness.

Believe it or not, faking a smile when you’re stressed can also help protect your heart. Just as it directly affects the brain, smiling can also reduce the increase in heart rate and breathing that we naturally experience under pressure. So the next time you’re struggling with a difficult situation, rather than letting your frown bring you down, try turning it around! You may be surprised how much better you feel. Smiling also affects our confidence and sociability. When we smile, we appear more approachable, friendly, relaxed, and (as an added bonus) younger! A genuine smile makes you seem open to others, which in turn makes others want to be around you. Better social interactions and improved relationships are big boosters when it comes to confidence and self esteem. Not to mention that smiling is contagious! After this last year and a half, that word may not be the most appealing one to use, but it’s true. Thankfully this is the kind of contagion that we want to spread. When interacting with others, we have a natural reaction called “facial mimicry,” meaning that when someone smiles at us, we do the same. When you smile at someone else, they are likely to smile back, and thus gain all the benefits of smiling that were previously mentioned. Smile at someone today and you might just start a mood boosting chain reaction! There you have it. Smiling is a crucial factor in improving our emotions, our health, and our relationships. Make it a point to smile as much as possible today, and don’t forget to take care of that smile by making regular visits to your dentist! Lieutenant Joe Jacobucci

n June 16, 20-year Woodburn Fire District veteran Joe Jacobucci was sworn in as a career lieutenant during a ceremony held at the board of directors meeting at the district’s main fire station. Lieutenant Jacobucci was promoted following the retirement of 19-year veteran career Lieutenant Darin Unrein on May 31st. Jacobucci is one of three career lieutenants who serve as front line supervisors for the fire district to ensure the 24 hour operational readiness of the district personnel and equipment, manage emergency scenes, train firefighters and ensure that the policies and procedures of the fire district are upheld in the delivery of emergency services. During nights, weekends and holidays, Woodburn Fire District lieutenants oversee all of the resources of the fire district when the district’s fire chief and operations chief are off-duty. “The role of lieutenant is the most important position in the fire service”, commented Woodburn Fire Chief Joe Budge. “They ensure the district resources are used in the most efficient and effective way possible in the protection of life and property while safeguarding the firefighters under their command. Lieutenant Jacobucci has the experience, skill and proven leadership ability to perform his new duties with a high level of professionalism.” Throughout his years of service, Jacobucci has been the recipient of many awards and commendations including the Woodburn Fire

District Silver Medal of Valor for life saving efforts following the 2008 bank bombing. In 2006, and again in 2018, Jacobucci was named the career firefighter of the year and in 2018 he received a ribbon of merit for his work as part of a Woodburn crew deployed to the Campfire conflagration that decimated the city of Paradise, California. Jacobucci has also been recognized with a letter of commendation for his work in implementing the district’s peer support program which helps firefighters cope with the traumatic events that first responders face as a routine part of the job. Lieutenant Jacobucci is an advanced emergency medical technician, holds an associate’s degree in fire protection technology and maintains many firefighting certifications. Lieutenant Jacobucci and wife Kelly have been residents of the Woodburn community for more than 20 years and their daughters all graduated from Woodburn High School. Daughter Jorden Jacobucci, is seeking a career in the fire service and currently serves as a volunteer firefighter for the fire district. When not on duty, Jacobucci can often be found volunteering his time for the Woodburn Restore that provides donated building materials at low cost to area residents and jobs for those in need. Community service is a value that has been a part of Jacobucci’s life for many years. It was work as a volunteer firefighter in Woodburn that convinced Jacobucci that a career in the fire service was to be his career path.

How To Transform Interior Wood Surfaces Got an old piece of wooden furniture, trim, or doors that could use a facelift? Staining is a simple way to transform the old into something new and fresh. Here’s how to do it: PREPARATION

✓ All surfaces must be clean, free of dust, oil, grease, wax, polish, glue and existing coatings before staining. ✓ New Wood: Sand with #120-grit sandpaper followed by #180-grit or finer for a smoother finish if desired. Remove all dust. ✓ Previously Finished Wood: Sand surface to raw wood with sandpaper. Remove all dust.

✓ Stir stain thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Do not thin. Always test stain on an inconspicuous area of the wood to verify desired color. Apply stain in the direction of the grain with a brush or clean cloth. Allow the stain to penetrate up to 5 minutes to achieve desired color (the more time the stain is allowed to penetrate, the richer and darker the color will be). ✓ Remove stain that has not absorbed into the wood with a clean cloth. Wipe in the direction of the grain, while blending

light and dark areas to obtain uniform color. To darken the color, apply a second coat after 1 hour, repeating directions above. Do not sand between coats of stain. Allow stain to dry for a minimum of 1 hour (dry time may be longer due to high humidity, low temperatures, or inadequate ventilation).

SAFETY TIPS ✓ Stain products can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, so it may be wise to wear gloves and goggles. Make sure you have good air circulation and open plenty of windows and doors to minimize exposure to fumes. If you experience eye watering, headaches, or dizziness leave the area. ✓ If sanding or scraping to remove old paint, do your research and take extra precautions to avoid releasing toxic lead dust. ✓ Do not dump stain products down the drain. Consult local regulations for proper disposal.
