Pumpkin Bread Pudding November is the time for all things pumpkin! Pumpkin Pie is the traditional go-to this time of year, but if you want to shake things up and get a little non-traditional, Pumpkin Bread Pudding is a scrumptious way to do it. It makes a great Thanksgiving dessert, but you can make it anytime the pumpkin cravings strike. If you want even more delicious pumpkin flavor, try using a loaf of pumpkin bread in place of regular bread. Delicious! INGREDIENTS

1 1/4 C milk 1/4 C brown sugar 1/4 C maple syrup 4 eggs 15-oz can pumpkin (or just under 2 cups fresh pumpkin puree)

1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cardamom 1/4 tsp grated nutmeg 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 pound artisan bread loaf, or challah, cubed

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl, whisk together milk, brown sugar, maple syrup, eggs, pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, and salt until well blended. 2. Add bread and stir carefully to combine, making sure there are no dry pieces remaining. 3. Lightly coat an 8x8 square baking dish with nonstick spray. Pour the bread into the dish, arranging evenly in the pan. Pour any leftover custard over the top. 4. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, or in the refrigerator overnight. 5. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°F. Remove plastic wrap and bake for 35-40 minutes. 6. Let cool slightly and serve with whipped cream, ice cream, or caramel sauce. *recipe reprinted from tastesoflizzyt.com

WOODBURN FIRE DISTRICT SHINES A LIGHT FOR FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS

National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend

s dusk turned to dark during the first weekend of October, more than 400 iconic buildings, landmarks, fire departments and communities across the country lit up in honor of the fallen and their families for Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters.

had this to say before the event: “We are honored that the City of Woodburn will take part in Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters by adding their lights to this radiant nationwide tribute. The lights shine bright, not only in memory of America’s fallen heroes, but in support of their loved ones.”

Participants included One World Trade Center in New York City, the Wrigley Building in Chicago, and the LAX Pylons in Los Angeles. This nationwide lighting, sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), led up to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend on October 3.

183 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2019 and 2020, and 32 firefighters who died in previous years, were honored during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, and a bronze plaque bearing the names of the fallen was officially added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial located in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

From October 1st through October 14th, the City of Woodburn and the Woodburn Fire District participated in the event by lighting up the city’s bridge that crosses Interstate 5 in red in remembrance of these fallen heroes. Fire Chief Joe Budge

King’s Farm To Table CANBY MARKET By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer

ooking for a holiday feast or party spread fit for a king? Look no further than King’s Farm To Table, the newest and most delicious addition to downtown Canby’s business community. King’s started as a micro-farm and farmstand located on Stafford Road in Wilsonville, but has reinvented itself in Canby as a specialty grocery market and scratch deli offering chef-prepared, locally sourced and inventive foods – with a little something for everyone. This holiday season they are offering chef-prepared Thanksgiving and Holiday Delites To-Go. “What I really hope that we’re able to do is be all things to all people,” explains head chef Bill King, who owns the store with his wife Jennifer. “We want to do a lot of the down home comfort food, but then on the flip side have some things that are a little fancier, pretty interesting and more sophisticated.” The deli offers a wide variety of prepared foods, from familiar staples like meatloaf, fried chicken, potato salad, and macaroni and cheese, to more adventurous and exotic dishes like pork

loin with apricot glaze, edamame salad with mint, and roast chicken with a basil-chili vinaigrette. “Really bouncing across the spectrum between your more traditional foods and a more contemporary and creative approach” is how Bill sums it all up. A big focus at the new storefront will be King’s famous handcrafted barbecue, which samples the best regional techniques from across the United States. “Every day we’ll have Texas brisket, western Carolina-style pulled pork, and Tennessee baby back ribs,” Bill says. “We’ll also be doing barbecue chicken with a rotating variety of seasonal fruit barbecue sauces and flavors.” In addition to King’s chef-prepared dishes, the store features a wide variety of locally sourced, high quality products and grocery items, including craft jams, jellies and applesauce, gourmet meat sticks, hot sauce, pickles, canned produce, potato chips and snacks, syrup, dried fruit, and other condiments. “We try to keep most everything local,” Bill says. “We’re about

85 to 90% local, so that’s the first thing we need to check off. And then it’s just really about quality. I mean, if I taste something and it’s delicious, then I want it in the store. I think that’s the simplest way to put it.”

While King’s upscale culinary offerings would not seem out of place on any street corner in metro Seattle or downtown Portland, the decor and atmosphere at King’s Farm to Table offers a distinctly rural feel, with country-themed art and farm-style furnishings and tables. “I kind of view this as country-store-meets-urban-market,” Bill says. “We wanted to have a little bit of a country vibe here.”

King’s Farm To Table partnered with more than a dozen local farms and producers when it was a simple farm stand on Stafford Road, and Bill says that will continue with the move into Canby. Some of the growers Bill has worked with include Martinez Family Farm and South Barlow Berries in Canby, Blonde Girl Honey in Dayton, Boring Goats in (you guessed it) Boring, The Country Egg in Sandy, Howard Calcagno Farms in Aurora and Jack Siri Produce in Oregon City.

King’s Farm To Table offers a wide array of chef-prepared foods to go, along with a well-stocked marketplace of excellent foodstuffs. They do not currently offer dine-in service. Thanksgiving and the holiday season in general often seem to revolve around food. Between large family gatherings, holiday baking, and all the treats that circulate during gift-giving season, there’s so much food lying around the kitchen that it can be hard to keep track of it all. But if you have pets, you should realize that many human food items can be dangerous to your furbaby! Take extra precautions to keep pets safe from these problematic foods: TURKEY: A few small, boneless, and well-cooked pieces of turkey should be fine, but never offer your pet raw or undercooked turkey because it could contain salmonella bacteria. Keep the leftover carcass (and all bones) away from your pet, too. Dogs and cats have a hard time processing fatty foods like turkey skin, and even small pieces of bone can lead to gastrointestinal injury.

FRIENDS Giving WELCOME TO THE SEASON OF

jumped on the friendsgiving bandwagon almost 6 years ago. We are lucky enough to be part of the greatest friend group in the world. They all truly share in our successes, they show up when someone is struggling, and they love life as much as we do. I’ve always been a huge fan of the saying, “When you have more than you need, build a longer table not a taller fence.” And as much as I’d love to fence these great people in – to not share them – that would be a loss to everyone else. Rather than keeping our circle of friends small and private, friendsgiving encourages us to be inclusive. We’ve been known to extend our invites far and wide. This enlightens us to new per spectives and brings different personalities to the table.

And while it doesn’t matter so much what’s on the table as who’s in the chairs around it, in our home. Dylan is an excellent cook and spares no expense when it comes to serving up our friendsgiving feast. For those who know me, I tend to stay out of the kitchen ... decorating, greeting guests, taking coats, and pouring drinks. We make the perfect team. Friendsgiving has become a highly anticipated, nonnegotiable, once-a-year event within our family. Between family, business, community endeavors, and all the rest of life, the years seem to be flying by. Friendsgiving is our opportunity to gather friends around to simply say, “Thank you. RACING THROUGH TIME THE LONG HISTORY OF THE SHORT TRACK AT

WOODBURN DRAGSTRIP By Donovan Darling, Active Media Staff Writer

was lucky enough to speak with Jim Livingston, the original owner of Woodburn Dragstrip, and his wife Lynn. They welcomed me into their home where we watched Woodburn Dragstrip racing highlights on television and talked racing. Then he took me down memory lane, quite literally, with a tour of the racetrack. Woodburn Dragstrip is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year, but Jim tells me it started out as a small gravel airstrip before being paved by the National Guard. Woodburn Dragstrip opened in June of 1961, operated by the Multnomah Hot Rod Council and the Northwest Timing Association. From 1961-1963, the racetrack was used for ⅛ mile racing. In 1963, they purchased 4.5 acres from a neighboring sheep farm to increase the racetrack length for ¼ mile racing. Fast forward to 1971. Jim was living and raising kids in Madras while he worked for United Grocers and ran a drivein restaurant he bought with a friend. On the weekends, he raced and hosted the races at The Dalles airport, using an old school bus with a generator as a makeshift timing tower.

As the story goes, the Multnomah Hot Rod Council and Northwest Timing Association were forced to shut down Woodburn Dragstrip in August of 1971. A friend called to tell Jim it was for sale and said it would be “the best investment you’ll ever make.” Jim showed up with a $1,000 cashier’s check for the deposit and that was that. Once he became the owner, Jim was forced to quit racing because he didn’t have the time. For the first few years, he continued working full-time while operating the racetrack on weekends, but balancing his family life with an increasingly busy work schedule proved difficult. In 1974, Jim and his family moved to Woodburn to operate The Dragstrip full-time. He worked 24/7. He installed phones in every building and carried a notepad in his pocket at all times. Calls would come in the middle of the night, surprising people who expected to reach an answering machine. Jim’s wife, Lynn, said it wasn’t uncommon for him to receive calls at the dinner table. Jim’s first project was to build the timing tower - done with the aid of one friend. Later, a few neighbors helped with the siding. One lone advertisement adorned the tower back then. Jim went on to repave the track and lay concrete at the starting line and finishing line, which had traditionally been grass or gravel. Eventually the track was concrete and pavement from start to finish, modeled after a racetrack in Dallas, Texas. At t he time, Woodburn Dragstrip marketed with radio and TV ads. Jim wrote, produced, and starred in his TV spots. He even provided the video footage. Radio ads went for $500. When not marketing, Jim would be mowing the grass while his kids picked up trash or

painted the bleachers. Lynn said, “We’ve had a very interesting life on the racetrack.”

That proved successful and, much to Kenney’s surprise, those drivers cost less to hire. With a big grin Jim said, “I built alcohol funny cars in the Northwest.”

Back in 1971, the type of cars that raced were top fuel, gas, comp elimination, and super stock. This Fast forward to 2021. Jim and was also the beginning era of E.T. They host racing events most weekends from March– October, and on Fridays from May–September.

They pioneered drag racing in the Pacific Northwest. Woodburn Dragstrip was the first dragstrip on the West Coast to have an electronic scoreboard. Jim said, “It’s kind of silly to race on a real track without a scoreboard.” For many years, Jim hired top fuel racers to come to Woodburn to bring out the big crowds. Drag racer Kenney Goodell said to him, “You’ll never make it if you don’t run top fuel,” so Jim brought in alcohol funny cars and dragsters instead.

Woodburn Dragstrip is very community-focused. Lynn informed me of an interesting fact: There’s a church service every Sunday morning before they race. It’s called Racers for Christ, and on sunny days they meet on the track, on rainy days they meet in Jim’s Wheelie Bar, which was built and named in honor of Jim on his birthday this year. Woodburn Dragstrip has a very small and tight crew who are considered family, some of whom have been at the track for 30 years.

Janell Berryman

Memories and Fantasy Become a Polymer Clay Reality By Donovan Darling, Active Media Staff Writer

anell Berryman launched her art career when she was 8 years old and won her first award. She’s the creator of Pumpkinseeds Folk Art Originals, a vast collection of “wacky” clay sculptures that look like they crawled out of a dream. Janell works in painting, collage art, and ceramics, but found her calling in polymer character art. She was no doubt inspired by her time working for Enesco Giftware Co. and Dept. 56, companies known for their cute gift-wares, and she’s been featured on That’s Clever! on HGTV and QVC. Sculpting her artwork for 30 years, Janell starts with a sketch. She then “creates an armature for the desired artwork, then builds [it] up with [polymer] clay.” After baking she “paints each one with multiple layers of acrylic paint and finishes pieces off with a stain beeswax finish.” While mostly animals, monsters, or humanoids, her sculptures range widely from dioramas, devils, yetis, clowns, and the occasional “pretty girl robot” or “radish man.”

Janell also creates holiday sculptures for Easter, Cinco de Mayo, July 4th, Halloween, Christmas, and more. She creates collages, paintings, and mixed media pieces, too. While every piece is unique, her style carries throughout: deeply inventive, wondrous, and funny. What does her work aim to say? “I believe my work touches on memories from our past. From love vs. pain, healing and happiness. I love to mix in holidays with my past experiences to create unique, intriguing characters.” When asked about inspiration, Janell said “my inspiration in the late 90s was originally from Tim Burton’s characters and my love of the holidays… Now I find inspiration in so many things. From antique or worn out items, old postcard images or beach [finds].” What art trends does she follow? “Color plays a big part in trends. Especially now with this farmhouse theme we see out there. I’ve touched on making pieces mostly white to fit decor. A few years back steampunk style was huge. I pulled out my box of metal parts and incorporated those into some fun robots.” Behind all the quirky clay and fantastical characters, Janell is a down-to-earth person: “What I’d like people to know about me and my work is that it’s from my heart and soul. I believe each of us is artistic in some way. I’ve gathered up all the years of life’s bumps and bruises and turned them into wacky creations. It’s a great and silly way to express myself. I’m lucky in so many ways. Art really does heal.” Her artwork is available for purchase on her website, pumpkinseedsfolkart.com. Originally from Los Gatos, CA, Janell currently lives in Woodburn, OR.
