uring the first few hours and days following a disaster, government agencies could be overwhelmed. This would leave citizens, neighborhoods and businesses to help themselves for hours if not days. Be prepared and help your community by becoming a C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) member today. Members help educate people about disaster preparedness and train them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. Using their training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event and can take a more active role in preparing their community. The CERT program is administered by Department of Homeland Security.

Want to be a Woodburn Fire Department C.E.R.T. Instructor? The Woodburn Fire District is looking for community members willing to train citizens in the C.E.R.T. program. Those events include: Woodburn Fire District/Walmart Kids Bike Rodeo in May; Brooks Steam-Up in July/August; Mt. Angel Octoberfest in September; and/or Woodburn Fire District Open House & Safety Fair in October. Other Opportunities C.E.R.T members may also participate in our Firefighter Rehab program, and our Emergency First Responder Training.

ometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, just like the theme song from “Cheers.” Located in historic downtown Aurora directly off 99E, the Aurora Colony Pub combines scratch-made pub fare with a homey atmosphere where neighbors become friends and friends become family. Originally erected in the 1930s, The Colony’s building is reminiscent of old Americana, complete with the original tin roof, concrete floors and rustic decor. Local residents Janae and Corey Barton purchased the business in 2015 and worked to create a family-friendly destination as well as a local watering hole. “We have a dining room separate from the bar and free kid’s meals on Mondays,” says manager Shelby Brezai. “In the summer we open the patio and there are yard games like Connect Four, Jenga and Cornhole. It’s fun for the parents to come out and relax while the kids play.” The Colony has a tasty selection of homemade comfort food guaranteed to satisfy any appetite. The tantalizing bone-in

broasted chicken is a house special and customer favorite, pressure-fried so it’s crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Loaded burgers and sandwiches, pasta, soups, salads and wraps are all delicious choices, or if you’re craving a nice dinner, select locally sourced steak cooked to your preference from Willamette Valley Meat Company. Halibut fish and chips and other seafood options like coconut shrimp and clam strips are also available. Daily specials are listed on the whiteboard when you walk in with fun weekly traditions like Taco Tuesday with four different kinds of tacos and a margarita special, prime rib on Saturdays, and all-you-can-eat spaghetti on Mondays. “The plates are giant,” Shelby says. “It’s rare that someone gets through one, but it does happen, and then we’ll give you a second plate and a box!” Friday’s clam chowder is a local favorite and they often have seafood specials that day like oysters and pan-fried razor clams. A kid’s menu is available in the dining room for the little ones. Don’t forget to finish off your meal with something sweet like an apple galette or chocolate lava cake. Breakfast is served on weekends starting at 9:00 am, so come in and kick off your Saturday with eggs benedict or a breakfast quesadilla paired with a bloody mary! The bar at The Colony boasts every amenity to relax and unwind including a popcorn machine, TVs, video poker, and sometimes live local bands. The experienced bartenders can make practically any drink you’re in the mood for, with an impressive selection of liquor and local beer and wine. “We love to support other local businesses whenever we can,” explains Shelby “so we’ve recently started carrying beers

by Vision Brewing, which is located in Aurora, and wine from Pheasant Run.” Happy Hour is from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and includes discounted appetizers, beer, and well drinks. solitary during their feeding phase, they are one of the most mysterious “anadromous” (freshwater born fish with an ocean phase) fish that exist. Chinook and Coho salmon often travel in schools, following the Pacific Coastline and feeding, being intercepted by commercial fishing fleets. They are easier to predict and keep track of. Steelhead tend to swim straight across the ocean, heading into dangerous water with many predators. As a result, only about 1 in 100 steelhead that enter the ocean will return alive to spawn.

very year, the “Grey Ghost” enters the coastal regions of our beloved Pacific Northwest region. Born in the rivers and creeks we pass by daily, they have a unique journey of one to two years in freshwater before migrating to the Pacific Ocean to begin a feeding journey that can last anywhere from six months to six years. These are winter steelhead.

Ocean-Run Rainbow Trout For anglers in the know, ocean-run rainbow trout are considered one of the premier sportfish in the world. Steelhead are the same species as rainbow trout, but they have the predisposition to migrate out of their rivers into giant open water to feed before returning at spawn time. Steelhead and rainbows can spawn together, and produce either resident rainbow or ocean-run steelhead in the same hatch! This is why you will see trucks parked at boat launches in the dead of winter. With frigid temperatures, rain and snow, winter steelhead return after swimming all the way to places like the coast of Japan, Russia and Alaska. I’m sure you’ve seen Portland-area rivers like the Sandy and Clackamas. Although the last several years have been incredibly tough for steelhead numbers, they are still sneaking in through tidewater into these rivers, utilizing the wintertime flows to travel and hold. They are not in feeding mode at this time, although they often strike lures and bait aggressively out of instinct. They use the magnetic polar queues to navigate back to the mouth of their river and then start to use their incredible sense of smell to find the exact area where they were born. The Oregon Coast has a healthier population of these sneaky ghosts. They are not easy to spot like salmon, nor do they tend to jump or roll at the surface much. Because of this, you may walk a quiet section of a river and never know there are a few large steelhead hiding in a riffle next to you. The only time they expose themselves is when they’re spawning. This is best observed in March, April and May, when most winter steelhead spawn.

The Future These fish are a hallmark of Oregon wildlife, but they need our help! We are at the lowest levels ever counted for these magnificent fish. The more we can do to protect creek and river habitat, protect cold, clean water, and supplement them in smart, scientific ways, the better chance we have at future generations enjoying these mysterious ghosts!

Directions  Preheat oven to 375ºF. Line sheet pan with parchment paper or silicone mat. Have your fortune strips ready to go.  Using stand mixer, whip egg whites and sugar on high speed for about 2 minutes, until frothy. Whip in melted butter, vanilla, almond extract and water until incorporated. Add flour and mix until flour just disappears.  With tablespoon measure, spoon batter onto parchment paper and spread out into even 3-inch circles. Only do 2 to 3 at a time as they set quickly and you won’t be able to fold more than that.  Bake cookies 7 to 8 minutes, until edges brown slightly (see note).  When each batch finishes baking, remove from oven and quickly flip circle over. Place note in center and fold cookie in half (a semicircle). Place semicircle onto edge of a cup, and quickly fold ends down to crimp into a fortune cookie shape. Place cookie in muffin tin to cool and hold its shape. Repeat with remaining batter and enjoy.
