What is it exactly?

Botox is a natural occurring substance called a neurotoxin that technically prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction and thus causes muscle paralysis. It sounds scary, but it’s not. Simply put it relaxes the muscles, usually of the face, to smooth out wrinkles. There are four different brands that are all sometimes referred to as “Botox” just like the term “Kleenex”. The brands include the original Allergan brand Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®. These four have been FDA approved for cosmetic use of the treatment of wrinkles.

How much does it cost?

Botox prices are based on how many units you need for the area or areas you like to treat. Prices range from $12-21 per unit depending on where you go.

Why should you get Botox?

Younger and younger clients are opting for Botox. Why? Because when you start getting Botox, your wrinkles will never get worse, in theory. So say you start at age 30 when fine lines are starting to appear. Well technically if you stay on top of your Botox treatments, which is about every 3-6months, you will have your 30 year old complexion when you’re 60 because the wrinkles were never allowed to form. Botox is definitely preventative as well as corrective for those who already have wrinkles.

How long does it take?

When you receive Botox make sure to ask your provider what to expect. For traditional Botox® brand Botox, you should expect full results to take 14 days.

What can you expect?

One of the most common things I hear from clients is that they are scared to get Botox. I get it! When I got Botox for the first time, I was a nervous wreck. I thought it was going to hurt, or somehow make me sick, or migrate to my legs to be honest. I was even well informed, and I was still so nervous, so it’s normal if you are nervous too. After your first treatment, you will most likely feel how I did: shocked at how fast and easy the process was and a little silly for being so scared, and then voila! 14 days later so in love with how flawless your skin looks.

e all know that 2020 has been a rough year so far, and pretty much every planned event this year has been either cancelled or significantly altered. However, I am excited to tell you all that the Fall Harvest Festival extravaganza at Frog Pond Farm is still on! That’s right folks, fall is upon us and that means your favorite pumpkin patch in Wilsonville has a lineup of fun-filled fall activities on deck. As you can imagine, it’s been a challenge to prepare a festival that will provide all the fun that families expect while having to alter activities to keep in compliance with

state guidelines. But at Frog Pond Farm they are making the best of things, and have come up with quite the extensive array of new and exciting events. This is one of their favorite times of the year, and it’s when they really get to spend some of their hard-earned time interacting with the community, so they’re not about to let these challenging circumstances stand in their way! How’s this all going to work you ask? Justin Timm and the whole family at Frog Pond Farm (this is an actual working family-owned farm!), have come up with the brilliant idea of transforming the regular festival into a drive-thru Pumpkin Patch Farm Safari! In an effort to comply with state guidelines and keep everyone safe, they’ve set everything up so that visitors can stay in their cars and enjoy all the sights from a short distance.

As you drive slowly through the safari, you will be able to view over 20 different animal pens and displays of various kinds - all of which are fall and Halloween-inspired but still family-friendly. Think of it this way. You get to enjoy a lot of the same things you have in years past, but without all the walking! In addition, they will have several interactive games for you and your kids to participate in from your cars. If you choose to do so (the games are optional), you can purchase a package there on-site. The package will provide you with a variety of throwing items (small pumpkins, apples, corn, etc.) which you can then use for some target practice. They even have planned a Connect 4 game, similar to Tic-Tac-Toe, that’s sure to be a blast! Be nice with those projectiles though kids (and dads)! To make things even more fun and interesting, they are simultaneously going to be holding a display competition and single scarecrow competition, meaning that some of the displays you will be

admiring are actually designed and constructed by your friends and neighbors! Make sure to pay close attention to each and every display (which will all be labeled and numbered) as you drive through so you can vote for your favorite. They’ll give you a voting ballot form at the outset of the safari, and be sure to choose carefully first prize for the best display is $5,000, which will be announced on Halloween Day! For anyone concerned about getting stuck behind a particularly slow car or anything of that nature (although you really don’t want to rush through this!), there will be multiple loops and routes that can be taken. The main route will house all of the displays, but they will also have some added loops to take you to other attractions. Of course, you don’t want to miss out on the pumpkin patch! Yes, you will still be able to follow your annual tradition and take the little ones out of the car to wander through the patch and pick out the perfect pumpkin. There will be some slight restrictions regarding space and social distancing, but that particular part of the festival will be relatively the same as usual. The Safari will be open to all starting October 5th and will run from 10am to 5 pm every day, through the 31st. For those looking for more of a Halloween-focused experience, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from 5pm to 7pm, they will be presenting a special “Spooky Safari”. This is still very familyfriendly and won’t scare the little ones; it’s just geared more towards a Halloween style. For those who really want a scare, on weekends from dark until 10pm they will also be adding a “Haunted Forest” attraction. This will be a Haunted House type of experience, but out in the woods, where they can maintain crowd control and proper social distancing. Make sure to wear good walking shoes and bring a flashlight. When it comes to the best local places to visit this fall, it doesn’t get any better than Frog Pond Farm! They are a local, family-owned business who truly love what they do and love being a part of our community. helping you and your family make your own. A lot of work goes into their Fall Harvest Festival each year, but obviously this year has set an even greater challenge. This year has been crazy enough, so take some time to get out with the family and enjoy some of the simpler things in life. If there’s been any sort of silver lining to all the chaos this year, I hope that it’s the reminder that we all need to slow down, un-plug, and make the time to create memories with those we love. homas Jefferson once referred to coffee as “the favorite drink of the civilized world.” Who can argue with that? Especially here in the Pacific Northwest (where 3 out of the 4 seasons are marked by the typically dreary weather we have a reputation for), coffee places are as common as convenience stores, if not moreso. Here in Wilsonville, one of our favorite purveyors of coffee (and other beverages for those anti-coffee people out there) is The Human Bean. Of course, these denizens of deliciousness aren’t brewing up mere plain black coffee - oh no! They’re building flavor profiles that sound (and taste) like they belong on the dessert menu at some fancy French restaurant. Cleverly concocted creamy creations of caffeine to comfort us on cold days; the foamy deliciousness is like sunshine in a cup! Also, don’t install them in kitchens, bathrooms or living rooms since steam from cooking, hot showers and smoke from candles or fireplaces can set them off unnecessarily. Carbon monoxide detectors that are not combined with a smoke alarm unit should be installed lower to the floor.

ou never know when disaster can strike, and that has never been more clear than in recent months. It’s important to take precautions for fire safety, and to prepare and plan ahead in case the worst should happen. First, work together to make an emergency escape plan. If possible, include two routes for getting out of each room. Draw a map and review the plan with the whole family once a month. Retractable ladders are a necessity for 2 story houses (or higher) when bedrooms are upstairs. Make sure all family members know how and have practiced climbing out the window and down the ladder, crawling to stay under smoke during escape, and covering their mouths and noses with shirts or towels. Designate one person to help young children, the elderly or pets. Decide on a meeting place outside of the building. Be sure everyone is familiar with both the sound of the fire alarm and also the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” technique for extinguishing fire on their clothing or hair. Keep fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and basement and know how to use them. Next, make sure working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed, and regularly check the batteries in each. Consider using alarms powered by lithium batteries since they can last up to 10 years (which is also the life expectancy of your detectors). Be sure your devices are mounted high on the wall inside bedrooms or adjacent hallways, or preferably on the ceiling since smoke always rises. Do not install smoke detectors near windows or outside doors, as the smoke can slip through cracks in 18 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2020

Third, practice fireplace safety by regularly checking to make sure your fireplace is properly maintained. That means checking to be sure it’s vented to the outside and inspect for any leaks in the exhaust pipe. Clean your chimney with chimney rods and brushes or hire a professional for annual cleaning. Don’t burn anything other than natural wood and never leave fires unattended. Also be sure to monitor the activities of children and pets when a fire is going. Fourth, practice electrical safety. Check all appliances for worn plugs or cracked wires, and call a professional if you run into any trouble. It’s best not to attempt electrical repairs on your own. Never use electrical appliances near water and make sure you’re not using oversized fuses or circuit breakers anywhere in the house. This can be dangerous, and is also less efficient. Always unplug things by pulling the plug, not the cord, and never break the ground prong of a three-prong plug to make it fit into a two-prong outlet. Instead, use an adapter. Using a few simple precautions, you and your family will be safer from fire hazards, and better prepared in case of emergency. lthough walking around outside with masks on is par for the course these days, Halloween will probably need to be celebrated differently this year. Restrictions on social gatherings are likely to remain in place for several more months, and with many people reluctant to venture out or greet others at their front door, it’s time to get creative with your plans for this spooky holiday. Here are some ideas for unique and interesting ways to make this Halloween one of the best ones ever, while still observing all recommended guidelines and keeping your family safe. PUMPKINS ARE A MUST

If your local pumpkin patch is open, go pick out your pumpkins for this year, or get them from the grocery store. Carve your pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns or paint them with some scary designs. Don’t forget to roast those yummy pumpkin seeds when you’re done!

DECORATE YOUR HOUSE & YARD Find as many orange and black decorations as you can, or make some yourself and go to town like it’s creepy Christmas! For extra points, create some ambiance with scary music or sound effects.

DRESS UP

You may not be going out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still wear a costume. If you’re the competitive type, set up a Zoom party with your friends and take a vote or have a judge decide which costume is the best.

MAKE SOME SPOOKY SNACKS

There are tons of recipes online for all sorts of crazy Halloween-themed goodies, from cute spider cookies and icky eyeball hors d’oeuvres to all kinds of witches’ brew cocktails. Pick out a few things to try and have some fun in the kitchen. 24 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2020

HAVE A CANDY-EGG HUNT ... HALLOWEEN-STYLE

Just because trick-or-treating may not happen this year, that doesn’t mean you have to skip the candy! Pull out those plastic easter eggs and fill them with candy, then hide them around the house. To make it even more interesting, and scary, keep the house dark and use flashlights while hunting. (You can always skip the eggs and hide the candy itself if the pieces are individually wrapped.)

Pop some popcorn (maybe throw in some candy corn), and kick back for some Halloween entertainment! Whether it’s a lineup of terrifying horror flicks, seasonal classics like Hocus Pocus, or family friendly options like Scooby Doo and It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, you’re sure to have a great night.

MEET THE MUSICIAN:

CHRISTINA COOPER by Dennis McNabb

If you haven’t yet heard Christina sing at any of the numerous local events she has performed at over the last 9 years or so, you may know her instead as her daytime alter ego: hair stylist & colorist extraordinaire at In Color Salon (although during COVID, she has been forced to work out of a private studio). That’s right, she’s both a professional hair stylist and recording artist, and a mother of 3 on top of it all! She truly is a superhero! How does she do it all? Well, Christina began singing at age 4 and performed at numerous state and regional honors choir concerts in the Bay area (winning multiple awards) and took any opportunity to sing at weddings and various other events over the years. Though she’s never stopped singing, when she was in college she decided to pursue her other passion of cosmetology.

ere’s a pitch for a new superhero movie: a female superhero who is a mild-mannered hairstylist by day and a powerhouse vocalist by night. She could throw ninja scissors (instead of stars) and her voice could mesmerize and stun the villains like a siren. Sounds great, right? Well you may be surprised to hear that this dazzling diva already exists, and she’s right here in Wilsonville! Christina Cooper (who lives, works, and performs right here in Wilsonville) is seriously the one of the best female vocalists you’ll ever hear. You may have seen an on-line advertisement last year for the Wilsonville Rotary Summer Concert series which featured Christina as a co-headliner with Johnny Limbo & the Lugnuts, and if you were lucky you made it to the performance. If so, you’ll know first hand why the ad compared her voice so aptly to the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Ann Wilson (from Heart), Linda Rondstadt, and Patty Griffin. This is no hyperbole. She is that good! 28 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2020

Christina graduated from cosmetology school and has been “bringing out the intrinsic beauty” in every one of her clients for almost 20 years since. She absolutely loves what she does and just so happens to be amazing at that as well, which is clearly evidenced by the fact that some of her clients have been with her since she started. Along the way she also moved to Wilsonville, got married, had a family, and has managed to continue sharing her fantastic voice with the world all the while. Now Christina has taken her first love of singing into a more professional arena. She plans to continue performing locally once restrictions on live performances are lifted, but in the meantime she’s recorded an album called “No Other Place.” If you haven’t yet heard it, prepare to get chills! I have no doubt if any of the comic book villains heard it, they’d be stunned into submission by her soulful voice.
