Northwest Professionalism Chimcare Chimney Service

C

himcare strives to be the leader in the chimney and fireplace industry. They are committed to providing customers with the highest quality service at affordable pricing, and are known throughout the Northwest for professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. In 1989, Richard Peralta began a small chimney sweeping company in Canby, Oregon in order to help support his growing family. Richard started the business on a part-time basis to provide extra income for his family of eight, while working full time for UPS. After five years of hard work and dedication to his customers, he was able to leave his day job and pursue the business full time. Richard built the business from the ground up by providing dependable, quality service that is still trusted to this day. Thanks to his incredible dedication to the craft, integrity, and impeccable customer care, Richard’s business quickly grew into the chimney repair and cleaning company that carries on his legacy today. Many of Richard’s first customers are still with Chimcare LLC today, along with their family and friends. Chimcare is very proud that the majority of their business is from loyal repeat customers and their referrals. As they have grown, Chimcare has expanded with additional locations in order to service the greater Portland and Seattle areas. Their chimney professionals can service homes and businesses as far north as Everett, Washington and as far south as Salem. Along with providing chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair services, the great team at Chimcare can also help transform your outdoor living space by constructing a beautiful outdoor fireplace for you to enjoy all year round. They are experts 6 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2022

at chimney construction and masonry, and their work is so good that they have also branched out to doing special projects like patios, retaining walls, fire pits, walkways, and pretty much anything that can be done with brick and mortar. In 2005 Richard’s sons Jesse and Daniel took over the business. While these two keep Chimcare running, Richard now dedicates his time to community outreach projects that he is passionate about. Jesse and Daniel remain committed to not only keeping up with the level of service that their father provided for many years, but working to exceed it. They want to go above and beyond for each and every customer. Along with the current customer base, Jesse is working hard to expand Chimcare as his father had always dreamed. They are always looking to serve new customers who are searching for clean-cut service technicians with experience, quality workmanship, and a name that is trusted around the northwest. They are proud to carry on the Peralta family tradition of providing exemplary chimney care for you and your home. If you have any questions or want to inquire about their services, you can visit their website at www.chimcare.com, or call them at 971-367-0990.

Lumera Regenerative Medicine Medical Options For Acne

Dr. Roberta Huang MD, FACOG

By Roberta Huang Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that can cause severe distress to those who are affected with this condition. Acne often starts after puberty when hormones levels increase, leading to the production of more sebum (oil) by the skin’s sebaceous glands. When sebum gets trapped within the pores by a protein substance made by the skin cells called keratin, the conditions are present for p. acnes bacteria to react with the sebum and cause the inflammation seen in acne. Face masks introduce heat, friction and a covering that creates a moist environment, conditions that can worsen clogged pores, hence the recent surge in “maskne.” The treatment of acne typically starts with over the counter and/or prescription topical agents such as Differin, Retin-A, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, azaleic acid, as well as antibiotics. For women, birth control pills and a hormone blocking medication called spironolactone are also an option. For people who have not responded adequately to routine treatments for acne, other options are available. Light chemical peels consisting of various acids such as salicylic, retinoic, lactic, mandelic, trichloroacetic acid, and glycolic acid, determined by skin type and concern, can be used for the treatment of acne by unclogging pores. Deeper peels can be used to address issues such as acne scarring but can carry higher risks. Isotretinoin (Accutane®), a vitamin A derivative, is a powerful oral medication approved for severe, scarring acne usually prescribed for 4-6 months under a doctor’s supervision. Sometimes referred to as the “nuclear option,” it can improve acne in up to 90% of people, while at the same time having the potential for causing severe, sometimes permanent side effects such as loss of night vision, damage to internal organs, bones and joints. It is absolutely contraindicated in women

who are pregnant or may become pregnant due to the risk of causing miscarriage and birth defects. Various lasers such as Pulsed-dye lasers, Potassium Titanyl phosphate lasers, and Infrared lasers can be used for treating acne by reducing acne bacteria, sebum production and inflammation. Because laser therapy--particularly stronger lasers--may permanently damage skin oil glands, there is concern that this might potentially cause unintended long-term consequences like skin dryness and premature aging. Costs range between $1800-$2400 for a series of treatments. IPL (intense pulsed light) and BBL (broad band light) systems that are equipped with a blue light filter can help to clear acne. The Forever Clear BBL is a system that uses a three-step process. In the first step, a blue BBL light is used to target and destroy p.acnes bacteria within the pores. The second step uses a yellow BBL light to reduce inflammation and redness associated with acne lesions. For the final step, skin is treated with infra-red light to initiate the body’s natural healing process. Costs range between $600 and $1200 for a series of treatments. Finally, Photodynamic Therapy is another option for people who suffer from severe acne, including cystic acne. Studies show an average of 60% reduction in acne, and results appear to last for months or longer. During PDT, a light sensitizing liquid is applied to the skin and allowed to sit, then a light device is used treat the skin. PDT can be painful and have more severe side effects than traditional light therapy. Costs range between $1200-$2400 for a series of treatments. Lumera Regenerative Medicine is located at 6464 SW Borland Road, Suite C3, in Tualatin. For more information, visit lumeramedical.com or call 503-852-9680.

ALBUM RELEASE

DAN REED NETWORK

Let’s Hear It For The Dan Reed Network By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

T

he portrait of the man, Dan Reed, is that of an artist; of a soul with profound depth, spirituality, and steadfast integrity. Looking back on a professional musical career which spans almost 4 decades, one might consider such attributes to be among his greatest strengths,

particularly in an industry which doesn’t always champion such things. Unfortunately, such attributes could also perhaps be considered his greatest obstacles to reaching the greater success he and his “Network” so genuinely deserved. As the reunited Dan Reed Network prepares to unleash their newest album (their 11th) to an eager public, I had the unique opportunity to speak with the man behind the curtain. It all began from a very young age for Dan, and rock and roll was the name of the game. Bands like Cheap Trick, Kiss, Triumph, and Rush were all the rage, and they sparked in him an early fascination with music. Like so many of us, he started playing an instrument in school: the trumpet, and it didn’t provide him with much in the way of inspiration. It wasn’t until he heard Van Halen’s “Running with the Devil” on the radio that he ditched the trumpet and picked up the guitar. And so began his journey to rock stardom. In 1987, after getting signed to Polygram, the Dan Reed Network (also consisting of Dan Pred on drums, Brion James on guitar, Melvin Brannon on bass, and Blake Sakamoto on keyboards) released their first self-titled album Dan Reed Network to wide critical acclaim. Their first single, “Ritual,” was a huge hit which reached #38 on the Billboard Top 100. They had the looks, they had the sound—a unique blend of rock riffage, heavy funk grooves, and pop sensibility—they had it all! Two more albums followed, Slam in ‘89, and The Heat in ‘91. The writing on each progressive album was stronger, the production more accurate in capturing the magic of their live 12 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2022

sound. The band was growing in popularity in Europe, but here in the states things were coming apart at the seams. There were a multitude of factors, but mainly it came down to their label struggling to properly promote the band. Essentially, the Dan Reed Network was ahead of their time. They effortlessly

blended multiple genres of music into an infectious and often majestic tapestry of sound, but it was ultimately too difficult to categorize for mass consumption. Dan became disillusioned with the industry and put the band on hiatus. He refused to surrender his integrity and refused to “sell out,” and so the band lay dormant for almost 20 years. In 2012, they came together for a one-time-only New Year’s Eve show, but that led to further shows and even some new recordings. Now, as we edge out from under the grasp of the pandemic, we are about to receive the newest product of the band’s labor. It’s the first album they’ve ever written together as a band, with every member contributing (including newest member, Rob Daiker on keyboards), and they are ecstatic to share the results. The album is called Let’s Hear it for the King, and if the first couple of singles, “Starlight” and “Pretty Karma” are any indication, it’s going to be a scorcher. “Starlight” is especially catchy with great hooks, poignant timely lyrics, and a rollercoaster of a video! The Dan Reed Network is reunited and reinvigorated, back in the saddle, and prepared to give fans a fresh dose of what only they can produce: the tastiest grooves, smoothest licks, and the sweetest melodies to ever come out of Portland. And this time it’s on their own terms. Long-term fans: let’s drop in the new disc, crank it to 11, and “We’ll cruise together”! Dan Reed Network’s latest album Let’s Hear It For The King has a release date of Friday June 17th. Pre-order the album from danreednetwork.tmstor.es/

BEAUTY TIPS

DIVINE COMPLEXIONS

SUNSCREEN!

Christine Lewy

By Christine Lewy, Beauty Expert

The sun has arrived and I wouldn’t be a good esthetician if I didn’t write an article on sunscreen!

S

pring and summer mean more exposed skin and maybe you start to think about getting a nice tan! For only really the last couple of decades we have known about the harmful effects of tanning inside and outside. As an esthetician one of the biggest complaints I hear from my clients is their disgust for their sunspots. These happen overtime as we age from damage done from the sun. They may also worsen or darken when you’re outside for during the sunnier months. But why are the sun rays so harmful and cause aging? The sun has two type of UV rays, UVA and UVB. The UVB rays from the sun are those tanning burning rays which maybe you love to bask in when the sun comes out…hello

But did you know that the UVA rays, the other type of light emitted from the sun, penetrates clouds and windows and this is the type of light ray that causes skin aging and even skin cancer. This is why wearing sunscreen on any exposed skin every single day is so important, even on cloudy rainy days. The light from the sun alters our skin cells’ DNA which can eventually lead to skin cancer. Some tanning beds are like light rays on steroids and even more dangerous than laying outside on a sunny day. So steer clear of traditional tanning and choose a good for you self tanner! HISTORY

The History of Linfield Football: A Streak of Greatness By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

If

you’re a fan of college football, doubtless names like the “Crimson Tide,” “Fighting Irish,” and “Buckeyes” require no explanation. They speak for themselves. However, if you don’t follow NCAA Division III football, you might not realize that one of the nation’s most successful football programs resides right down the street in McMinnville, Oregon. None of the haloed Division I teams cited above can match the accomplishments of the Linfield University Wildcats. It started on an autumn day, October 6, 1956. Great things often have humble beginnings, and for Linfield football this was certainly the case. While it would have been more dramatic if the Wildcats’ win that day had been defined by a scintillating highlight moment—a miraculous last minute catch in the endzone, or a gutty goal line stand—such was not the case.

experience it and build up over the years.” For a team composed of small town kids and Korean War veterans attending college on the GI Bill, they had no idea that their victory over the Ramblers that fateful October day would be the start of the “Streak.” The “Streak,” which has now extended to 65 consecutive winning seasons as of 2021, is the longest active winning streak in NCAA history at any level. No other team is even close to this record, with the next in line coming in at 42. In retrospect, Ward admits no one at the time had any idea of what was to come. “I guarantee you that in 1956, nobody had any idea there would be any kind of streak,” he said. “We were just happy that we could get through the season with a win.”It was coach Paul Durham’s team that started the “Streak,” but it is a testament to the pride, tradition, and dedication to excellence, fostered by successive coaches over the last six decades, that is

1956 Linfield champs

Linfield had just suffered back-to-back losing seasons, and the 1956 campaign looked like more of the same. The opponent that Saturday was the Seattle Ramblers, a semi-pro team on a tear, who had defeated the Wildcats the previous year, and dominated the conference titles over the last 14 seasons. Against the odds, Linfield managed to defeat the Ramblers 13-7. From that game on, the Wildcats wouldn’t lose another game that season. This win over the Ramblers marked the beginning of what has become known as the “Streak.” Paul Ward, who played guard on the ’56 team, recalled: “Once we had a winning season, we knew we could win. We had to 32 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2022

responsible for Linfield’s relentless march through the NCAA history books. Looming at the forefront of the Mount Rushmore of Linfield football coaches is Ad Rutschman. Hired as head football coach in 1968, Rutschman continued the winning tradition until his retirement in 1991. Rutschman not only coached football, but baseball as well. Rutschman is still the only coach at any level to win national titles in both football and baseball. In his 24 seasons as Linfield ’s head football coach, Rutschman won three NAIA national championships (1982, 1984, 1986), and 15 Northwest Conference titles. Perhaps Rutschman’s most epic victory occurred in the 1984 national

championship game, where Linfield trailed Northwestern 22-0 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Against all odds, the Wildcats roared back to win the game 33-22. In addition to coaching football and baseball, Rutschman also served as Athletic Director for 25 years, during which time the school’s athletic facilities were greatly improved. Among these improvements were two new gymnasiums, a baseball stadium, and the 26,600 square foot field house named in honor of Rutschman and his wife Joan, for their dedication and service over 27 years to Linfield University. From 1992 to 2005, Linfield’s football program was led by Ed Langsdorf (1992-95) and Jay Locey (1996 -2005). Both coaches kept up the winning tradition. Langsdorf ’s brief tenure resulted in a record of 32-9-1 and three championships. Locey’s tally at the end of his Linfield career was a stellar 84-18 and six championships, including one NCAA Division III title. During one stretch of his impressive career, Locey coached the team to a 41-game win streak.

one another. This intense trust that grows from respect and brotherhood is interwoven with a blue-collar work ethic of toughness

and we are the hammer.” So next fa ll, as Linf ield continues on its historic ma rch through the NCAA record books, take a moment to appreciate what six decades of commitment to family, grit, and excellence can achieve. As Coach Smith ref lected, “From Coach Durha m to Coach Rutschman, to now, the secret to this place has been that we have really good people coming and being part of a really good program. When you focus on excellence and put the team first and you’re a man of your word, great things happen.” The “Streak ” lives on!

“It couldn’t be someone from the outside to come in and run the program,” Smith explained. ‘We had to maintain who we are. If we lost that, we’re just another school’.”

In 2006, the future of Linfield football was turned over to Joseph Smith, and he has not only continued the “Streak” but pushed the school into the NCAA record books. Under Smith’s leadership Linfield has amassed an incredible record of 13827, with a .836 win percentage, the highest percentage of any coach in Linfield history.

When Smith, a former defensive back for Linfield in the 90s, took over in 2006, he was well aware of the legacy he was responsible for and described his role as that of a “caretaker.” With Locey’s departure, Smith understood that the decision to hire him had been carefully considered. “It couldn’t be someone from the outside to come in and run the program,” Smith explained. “We had to maintain who we are. If we lost that, we’re just another school.” The Smith era at Linfield has been nothing short of remarkable. For a school that offers no football scholarships, a modest budget for athletics, and typically doesn’t attract big time recruits with NFL aspirations and talent, the question remains: “How does Linfield do it?” How do the Wildcats continue to churn out victories, winning seasons, and championships? Ultimately, how do they keep the “Streak ” alive? Smith credits a number of factors, foremost of which is the sense of family that permeates the entire Wildcat program. Caring for

Coach Joseph Smith

and a thirst for excellence. Ryan Carlson, a defensive star on the 90s era teams, sums it up beautifully: “Once you’re in our Linfield family, you’re connected to 60 years of people who have had those core principles shape their young lives. Those life experiences continue to breed an incredible amount of love and loyalty towards the program.” As inspiration to his players, Smith periodically invites guest speakers to address the team. One of the speakers, Bretton Brown, an Army Ranger and a friend of Smith’s, imparted words from the Rangers’ credo that resonated with the team: “We are Men of Action. We do the heavy lifting. We are the walls,

SEASONAL

Father's Day History By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

Origins

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Washington State. However, not until 1972—58 years after Mother’s Day was made official by President Woodrow Wilson—did Father’s Day become a national holiday. The campaign to celebrate fathers didn’t have the same enthusiasm as celebrating mothers–maybe because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” On July 5, 1908, a West Virginian church sponsored the nation’s first event honoring fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah. But it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year in Spokane, Washington, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd tried to establish an official holiday for fathers. She went to the YMCA, local churches, business owners, and government officials to garner support for her idea, and she was successful! On June 19, 1910, Washington State celebrated the first statewide Father’s Day, and the holiday slowly spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged state governments to observe Father’s Day.

Controversy and Commercialism

Strangely, many fathers and men criticized the holiday! As one historian wrote, they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental 34 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2022

attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products–often paid for by the father himself.” During the 1920s and 1930s, a protest movement formed to demand a single holiday instead, called Parents’ Day, in place of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Each Mother’s Day, pro-Parents’ Day groups protested in New York City’s Central Park. Parents’ Day activist and radio performer Robert Spere commented, “a public reminder that both parents should be loved and respected together.” The Great Depression, however, deflated these protest efforts, as retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men; promoting neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards. At the breakout of WWII, advertisers argued that Father’s Day honored American troops and supported the war effort. After the war, Father’s Day was still not a federal holiday, but it became a national institution. In 1972, in the midst of his arduous presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon made Father’s Day an official national holiday. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts. In other countries–especially in Europe and Latin America–fathers are honored on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19. In the United States and elsewhere, Father’s Day 2022 will occur on Sunday, June 19.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

GRANITE TRANSFORMATIONS Written By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

T

ransform that embarrassing, worn out, and outdated kitchen or bathroom into the beautiful, new, luxurious space you’ve always wanted, and with minimal demolition! Home renovations are never enjoyable. As a rule, they tend to be messy, costly, and incredibly disruptive, often spanning weeks if not months. That’s not the case, however, when you hire Granite Transformations! Their unique concept addresses these issues by preserving and utilizing the majority of your existing functional assets, and in essence, performing more of a “facelift” than a complete remodel. That equates to less mess, lower costs (40% less on average than a full remodel), and far less of a disruption to your daily life. And the results are astounding! Granite Transformations is a worldwide franchiser with some 240 franchises around the globe. They have been perfecting their methods of operation for over 20 years. Local franchisee owner Dan Lappin purchased his location, which services Oregon and southwest Washington, 6 years ago. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision to invest and expand, he has relocated to a brand new and highly impressive showroom in Lake Oswego which will be celebrating its Grand Opening this Spring! It was Granite Transformations’ unique process that attracted Dan to the business. Most kitchens and bathrooms are functionally sound, but over the years have just become outdated. As a result,

36 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2022

simply “transforming” them versus demolishing and starting from scratch makes perfect sense. Granite Transformations’ proprietary makeover methods are highly efficient, and by using recycled materials whenever possible they’re also environmentally friendly. Countertops, cabinets, sinks, backsplashes; they do it all, and everything is engineered in the US and fabricated locally. They do these “makeovers” provided there are no structural changes needed to the building itself. They refresh, customize, and reconfigure cabinetry, countertops, and entire kitchens and bathrooms within your existing walls without extensive demolition. Dan explained, they are make-up artists, not plastic surgeons! If you are interested in remodeling your kitchen or bath, call Granite Transformations first! Let them schedule a free design session to show you the amazing transformations they can provide. Their products are top-notch, require little-to-no maintenance, and come with a lifetime, transferable warranty. Why would you even need to consider anyone else? Granite Transformations is located at 9 Centerpointe Dr. Suite B in Lake Oswego. Give them a call at 503-498-9389.

NOW Is The Time To Act BELTRAN PROPERTIES GROUP at eXp Realty By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

Interest rates are on the rise so NOW is the time to act! Whether you are buying or selling, the market is at its peak!

A

ccording to our good friends Jaimy and Sherine Beltran of the Beltran Properties Group (at eXp Realty in Tualatin), that is the most significant piece of advice they want to impart on the community at this point in time. If you have been following along with our monthly installments, courtesy of the Beltran team, you will be intimately familiar with the market’s activity over the past years. Namely, you will understand that interest rates have been uncommonly low while demand has been at all-time highs. Buyers have been able to afford higher prices (due to lower interest) while sellers have

38 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2022

been able to ask higher prices and still sell their homes in record time. Jaimy Beltran, who is ranked in the Top 50 Agents in Portland, stated that he’s never seen anything quite like this. Especially now, since rates are starting to edge back up, we have the perfect storm of hyperinflation alongside exceedingly low inventory and increasing interest rates. It’s such a rare situation, we could almost say it never happens…except that it is happening right now! Constantly following all of the trends and analyzing the markets, the Beltran team has been anticipating this “correction” for some time. It was just a matter of when the shift would occur. Now that it has begun—the interest rates have risen a full percentage point just since

Kelby Maria Photography

the beginning of the year—what’s keeping Jaimy optimistic is that the market is in great shape heading into this adjustment period. Inventory remains extraordinarily low, and will remain so for the foreseeable future (at least the next 1-2 years), while the supply chains are rebuilt and construction attempts to catch up with demand. So as Jaimy referred to it, the leveling off of the market will come as a “process” (organic and subtle over a longer period of time) rather than an “event” (a massive, disruptive shift that leaves everyone spinning). In the meantime, what this means for sellers and buyers alike, is that there is no time like the present to get in the market. Yes, the shift will come gradually and over time, but in order to capture the lion’s share of your equity, now is the time to act. As rates go up, affordability will go down. According to mymortgageinsider.com, “at a $2,000 per month [mortgage] payment, your maximum purchase price is cut by over $50,000 by a 1% increase in rates.” Referring back to the fact that rates have already gone up a full percentage point since the beginning of the year, that means that someone who could afford a $600,000 house last December now can only afford a $550,000 house. As that trend continues,

the resultant adjustment that sellers will be forced to make is to begin dropping their asking prices. So to Jaimy’s point, selling sooner rather than later means a higher price point on your home. And for buyers, buying now means higher affordability! It’s as simple as that! Jaimy, Sherine, and the entire team at Beltran Properties have a whole slew of proven tactics to assist you in getting the most out of your transaction. Whether it’s prepping your home to sell (working with contractors on repairs, staging, etc.), putting it on the market, or making the right offer on a property to buy, the Beltran Team is the premier brokerage in the area. They are also experts in assisting people who are moving out of the state! With a nationwide network of the best agents in the business (through eXp Realty) at their disposal, there is no base they don’t have covered. Call the Beltran Team today 503-502-3330, and see for yourself why they have the best reputation in town!
