ou could say it started as “puppy love” since Doctors Brent and Debbie Husband met in Veterinary school. Dr. Brent was born in Portland and grew up in Hillsdale and Sherwood before attending Eastern Oregon State College. Following graduation, he immediately entered the College of Veterinary Medicine at OSU, where he met his wife Debbie, who grew up in Beaverton. After their graduations from OSU in 1992 & 1993 they spent some years in Minnesota, but were both happy to eventually return to Oregon.
They purchased the Animal Care Clinic on Halloween in 1997, and ever since then they have worked hard to create a clinic where they can practice optimal care for animals. They believe that by providing great basic care as a team, they can increase the quality of life for family pets. For the majority of their careers Dr. Brent and Dr Debbie have both worked in small animal practices. The variety of animals and breeds that they see guarantees that there is always something new to learn, and they believe strongly in continuous education so they can stay apprised of new methods and treatments, and provide the very best care for their patients. Dr. Brent loves all aspects of veterinary medicine but has a special interest in surgery. All types of soft tissue surgery are interesting to him, as is the challenge of orthopedics. He is excited that they are developing laparoscopic surgical techniques at the clinic too. This allows for far less painful procedures and improved recovery times. Limiting and relieving pain for the animals they treat is very important to everyone at the clinic. As cats and dogs reach their geriatric years, there are several things the clinic does to help them feel their best. Aging pets often have to cope with the pain of arthritis. Dr. Debbie’s passion for easing that pain has been the 6 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2020
motivation behind becoming certified in animal rehabilitation. Through rehabilitation, she can help ease the pain that animals are feeling, whether it’s caused by arthritis, an injury, surgery, or a neurological disease. Dr. Debbie has been certified in this since 2012 and loves applying what she’s learned to help their patients. She feels fortunate to work in a community that makes pet health a priority. The staff at Animal Care Clinic is a great team and they are passionate about providing the best medicine and care that they can. The clinic is an AAHA certified practice, which means they go through a strenuous evaluation every 2 years to be sure they are providing best practices in all areas of veterinary medicine. The clinic offers many different services, including but not limited to laparoscopic surgery, ultrasound, water treadmill therapy and boarding. Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique used to view inside the abdomen. A laparoscope (tiny camera) is inserted through a small incision site and used to magnify the internal view of the abdomen onto a TV monitor. This allows the veterinarian to do a more thorough abdominal examination while only creating a small incision site. This process allows for minimized tissue trauma, decreased pain, and a faster recovery. Laparoscopic surgery is used for many different surgical procedures, including dog spay, cat spay, biopsy, gallbladder removal, and abdominal exploratory surgery. If your pet requires surgery, ask if laparoscopy may be a less traumatic and less painful option.
A pet owner should bring their pets in for checkups for many different reasons. Animals should see a veterinarian once a year to have a physical exam and bloodwork. A current exam is needed for monthly prescription parasite control. They can often find diseases early which enables the
doctors to cure, add supplements or prescribe medications to give your pet a longer happier life with you. Taking care of your fur babies is very important, Animal Care Clinic is here to help do exactly that. Water Treadmill Therapy can offer amazing benefits for pets. At Animal Care Clinic, they are excited to now be able to offer underwater treadmill hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy has been proven to be an effective tool in veterinary physical rehabilitation. Underwater treadmill sessions utilize the natural buoyancy, resistance, pressure and warmth of water to promote strength, endurance, and increased range of motion. This is particularly useful for pets with arthritis and neurological issues, or those that are recovering from injury, needing to lose weight, or just need some good ol’ fashioned (underwater) exercise. The Animal Care Clinic also provides boarding services for cats and dogs. They offer overnight and long term dog boarding for any size and breed, from a TeaCup Chihuahua to a Great Dane. The dog runs are large enough for your buddy to stretch his legs, and each run has a fully padded floor so your pet won’t have to lie down to rest on a cold metal or concrete surface. The doors of the dog runs are shatterproof glass to give a sense of freedom and space to your pet’s experience – no bars here. Although all of the runs are fully indoors, the dog room contains a solar tube which lets sunlight in from the roof. You may bring your dog’s own toys and bedding from home, or they can supply fresh bedding daily. If you are boarding more than one pet, you may choose to have them boarded in the same large kennel, if space permits. This is especially nice for long term dog boarding. Boarding dogs are walked outdoors in a grassy area three times daily, Monday through Saturday, and twice on Sunday. If time permits, they
may also be allowed out of their kennels to socialize with the kennel technicians. If your pet requires a special diet, you should bring your own food and they will be sure to feed your pet accordingly. If your dog needs daily medication or monitoring, they also offer medical boarding. This can often be helpful after surgery or a procedure when a pet is difficult to medicate at home. Taking advantage of overnight dog boarding can ensure your pet gets the medication he or she requires. You can take comfort in knowing that your pet’s medical needs are being served by your own veterinary staff while you are away. All overnight dog boarding and long term dog boarding guests must have proof of current Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella vaccinations. All dogs must also be current on flea control, or flea control will be applied upon arrival. Beyond providing quality care for your furry family members, the team at Animal Care Clinic takes tremendous pride in supporting the local community as well. They work with the Chamber of Commerce, donate to different school programs, and help support the Wilsonville Arts. They also work with Meow Village and their cat rescue, and have a small adoption program for special circumstances. During Covid-19, the clinic is taking extra precautions by doing curbside concierge service where only pets enter the clinic. When you arrive for your appointment, give them a call and they will send a “runner” out to your car to get your pet and take them inside. All contact to get the pet’s history or symptoms, consult with the doctor about what they found, form a healthcare plan, and make payments is done over the phone. The staff is wearing masks and gloves when appropriate. Even though no clients are coming into the building they have also stepped up their normal sanitation procedures in order to protect the whole team. Currently their hours of operation have been adjusted. They are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8am to 6pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 8am to 7pm, and Saturday from 8:30am to 3pm. hristopher Shotola-Hardt has been an art instructor at Wilsonville High School for many years. Coming from a family of educators and having listened to teaching shop-talk every night at the dinner table, he initially didn’t think that he wanted to pursue teaching as a career. That changed, however, when he realized that teaching also meant being able to share his passion for art with others.
In 1995, Christopher interviewed and was hired as the art teacher at Wilsonville High, which was a part-time position at first with three classes, Portrait of Francois I on Horseback (after Francois Clouet) Acrylic on Canvas then became full-time when he finished his MFA. Christopher taught each summer at the Children’s Art Institute, which was hosted for ten years at Boeckman Creek Primary School. He has loved every minute of sharing his passion and skill with the youth of Wilsonville.
With over 30 years of experience, Christopher has many treasured memories of his career as an instructor. • 1/2 cup quick cooking oats • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided • 1/8 teaspoon baking powder • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed • 1/4 cup butter, melted • 2 cups pitted sour cherries
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Spray four ramekins with non-stick cooking spray. 3. Combine oats, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, baking powder and baking soda together in a medium bowl. Whisk together well to evenly combine. 4. Add brown sugar and melted butter to the flour mixture and mix well to form a clumpy dough. Set aside. 5. In another bowl combine pitted cherries, granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour. Mix well so the cherries are coated with the flour and sugar. Divide them between the four sprayed ramekins. 6. Cover cherries with crisp topping, dividing it evenly between the four ramekins. 7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until crisp topping is golden brown.

Taste Of The Town Wanker’s Corner Saloon & Cafe

His friends told him he was crazy, that nobody was going to come out that far for drinking, dancing and nightlife. They were wrong. It wasn’t too long before the place was busy all the time, with a line out the door every Friday and Saturday night. This remained the norm until the late 90’s. By then JL had collected so many antiques, junk, knick-knacks, movie posters, and unidentifiable objects that moving to a larger building had become inevitable.

wner JL Maixner bought the old Wanker’s Tavern off of Borland Road in the 1980’s. At that time a busy night was a couple locals having a beer after work. JL had owned several food and drink establishments in the past and jumped on the chance to make this new acquisition his own. Having once been referred to as a “Bloody Wanker” by a Welsh acquaintance, he was especially fond of the name, only making a slight change to call it Wanker’s Corner Saloon & Cafe. Next he brought in his own décor, punched a hole in the wall, built a patio, and made plans to bring in a DJ on the weekends. 14 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2020
Wilsonville’s charm was a huge draw for him, especially because of the beauty and fast growing population. He moved the entire operation to Wilsonville in December of 1998. Many of their regulars followed and the Wilsonville community was welcoming and receptive. JL loved every minute of his time in Wilsonville until sadly, after a lengthy battle with leukemia, he passed away in June of 2002. His son, Cooper took over as the Saloon Keeper full time. The old rustic interior you’ll see inside of Wanker’s is material that was salvaged from a 100 year old barn that was located on the property prior to current building’s construction. Architectural salvage material wasn’t in that big of demand at the time but JL had the foresight to see the value in it and had an innate love of places with that rustic and worn look. He snatched it up and designed the interior himself. Most of the unique and interesting items you’ll see inside are artifacts that he collected over the years. He was really into antiques and probably had one of the largest collections of Roy Rogers Memorabilia outside of Roy’s own family collection.
Wanker’s most popular food items have always been their Nachos and Burgers, though they have a wide variety of options including tex-mex, rice bowls, and breakfast on the weekends along with the standard pub-style fare. The enormous plates of Nachos are especially impressive and never fail to get a “WOW” response when they’re brought out. As far as drinks go, Cooper says the Wankerita (a personal play on a traditional margarita) is a favorite, though most people come in to choose from the 25 beers and ciders on tap that are constantly rotated. Whether you’re plagued by an empty stomach or just have a thirst to quench, you’re sure to be satisfied by the variety of options available at Wanker’s. In addition to providing fantastic food and drink in a relaxed and unique atmosphere, Wanker’s is deeply connected to the local community. Lately they have been doing their best to support their employees, patrons, and the community at large, including donating around $135,000 to the Oregon Food Bank. In normal times Wanker’s is pleased to support all of the local Wilsonville schools and youth sports programs.
The Covid-19 shutdowns have been an extremely difficult time for the entire industry, but Wanker’s has been able to keep their doors open for takeout. They would like to thank their loyal customers, many of whom have picked up meals multiple times per week, every week, since all of this started. Dear Wilsonville Community: It is completely understandable that due to COVID-19 and the Governor's Executive order, the City of Wilsonville had to cancel all official City summertime events. In April we heard from citizens and business leaders asking the Chamber if there wasn't a creative way we could figure out to have a "safe" community celebration? The We Are Wilsonville Coalition held several meetings to discuss how to enable our Wilsonville Community to be able to demonstrate Community and Country Pride all within the State of Oregon COVID-19 guidelines.

and Why it’s Important to Choose the Right Products By Beauty Expert Christine Lewy Did you know that only 20% of skin aging is due to your age? That’s good news for you because a lot of the reasons why we end up not liking our complexion we now know is preventable or correctable. What you put on your skin ideally morning and night 365 days a year, adds up to a lot of either preventative care or correctable opportunities. You have the power to make a big difference in the radiance of your complexion. How? By using a professionally recommended skin care routine for your skin type and concerns, morning and night. There are so many products out there today and lots of conflicting information, so I know it can be overwhelming and downright confusing on what you should be doing to get the skin you desire. Where to begin? Start with Medical Grade skincare products, because if you’re going to be spending money on skincare you want it to actually be doing what it’s claiming to do for you. Am I right? Unfortunately, a lot of the skincare products on the market today can’t back up their claims on the bottle. As consumers, we would never truly know unless if a product will work unless they can prove it with the correct type of clinical studies. Cosmeceutical skincare products or “over the counter” are those that you can find at retailers such as Nordstrom, Sephora, Target, Ulta etc. These category of products are not legally allowed by the FDA to penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin to cause change. The deeper layers are where we want ingredients penetrating to, to be able to make the changes. What kind of change am I talking about? The fewer wrinkles, less dark spots, smoother skin, less acne that you’re hoping for. Now don’t get me wrong there are some good over the counter product lines out there but they aren’t going to be working as hard to give you results because they are sitting on the top layers of the skin. They may not be as safe either. Over the counter products do not have to go through the same efficacy and safety trials that medical or “pharmaceutical
grade” products do. Pharmaceutical or Medical Grade Skincare products are sold by licensed professionals who can correctly recommend products for you. Most lines will require a Doctor on to be on staff as well and ensure providers have had accurate training. These products can be found at spas, medspas, dermatologist and plastic surgeon offices. These products tend to be more expensive than over the counter lines, but you know you’re getting what you pay for. Let me add a quick note about buying online, especially from Amazon. Most if not all of the professional lines I have worked with have lawsuits against online retailers such as Amazon and Walmart because they are not allowed to be selling these medical grade lines. Somehow, they are obtaining products, selling expired product, or selling false products that look just like the real thing. So beware, even if it looks like a better deal. When it comes to skincare & even makeup, order online through an authorized retailer such as the company itself or go into your local spa/medspa/dermatologist to purchase authentic product. Now what should you start with for a skincare routine? The basics are based on your skin type; a cleanser that will effectively yet gently cleanse your skin, a moisturizer, and a good sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Those three things you should have in your skincare arsenal to apply every single morning and night (minus the spf in the evening). THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO C Just ask Jaimy. The story goes back more than 20 years to Ben Bauer, his wife Sherine’s grandfather. M
eet Dr. Scott Ferguson, the Canby Clinic’s newest naturopathic physician, who joined the practice on May 1.
Dr. Ferguson is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, who said he had “very early ambitions” to go into the medical field. He attended medical school at The National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, then completed his two-year residency in Australia. It was his abiding interest in the study of genetics that took him Down Under prior to medical school, and the experience exposed him to different philosophies of care and a deeper understanding of naturopathic and preventative medicine. “My ambition was to be a holistic pediatrician,” he said. “I wanted to focus on more preventative therapies such as diet and nutrition, and the more cutting-edge genetic treatments that were on the horizon.” During a medical career that has spanned more than 25 years, Dr. Ferguson has been active in private practice, education and consulting. He has published several books in the areas of natural medicine and diagnostic interpretation, and given lectures across the globe. One of his specialties is functional medicine, also known as integrative medicine. “It’s the best of both worlds.” he says. “Science and nature. That’s where I see the future of medicine going.” For much of the past two decades, he has been based in private practice in the Happy Valley area, but he moved to Sherwood last year. Before joining the Canby Clinic, Dr. Ferguson was working in laboratory medicine for a biopharmaceutical company with locations in Oregon (and around the world). The company specializes in manufacturing plasma-derived and recombinant therapeutic products, and has joined other leading companies in a global effort to develop “CoVIg-19,” a potential plasma-derived therapy for treating those with serious complications from the novel coronavirus. Dr. Ferguson was on a state task force that was leading Oregon’s effort in that regard, which was chiefly tasked with isolating antibodies from COVID-19 patients for further study. 30 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JUNE 2020
“The primary focus is on isolating antibodies from convalescent plasma, from patients that have had exposure,” Dr. Ferguson explained. “That’s where a lot of the energy and focus is right now: trying to develop biological therapies, as opposed to, say, a vaccination that could take a year or more to properly isolate and test.” Dr. Ferguson said the state of primary care led him to return to a role where he was able to interact with patients more directly. Personal responsibility, prevention and empowerment are the cornerstones of his philosophy for care and healthy living.
