The Dirty Truth About Makeup Brushes

Do you use makeup brushes to apply your makeup?

If so, do you wash your brushes? How often? Every time, once a week, when you remember to, maybe you didn’t know you’re supposed to? Cleansing your makeup brushes will not only help in your makeup application, but it will prevent breakouts and keep your skin healthier as well. Not cleansing your makeup brushes leaves behind makeup, skin cells, and oil which harbor a nice place to grow bacteria. In a study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology, researchers found that 70% to 90% of all of the cosmetic tools they tested had been contaminated with fungus and bacteria, including E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus (staph). Yuck!

So what tools should you use?

The tools you use to apply your makeup can make all the difference. You can have a great, perfectly matched foundation, but if you’re using the wrong tool to apply, it may not look as good as it could. Makeup is usually applied with either a brush or a sponge, so if you’ve been using your hands, try out a foundation brush to level up your makeup game. As a makeup artist, sponges are beautiful for application, but they are not good for skin health unless you’re using a new sponge each time. Sponges are by far more prone to growing bacteria because they are harder to sanitize. So for breakout prone skin, I always recommend using brushes to apply makeup vs. a sponge. When it comes to makeup brushes there are two types: synthetic brushes and natural hair brushes. Natural brushes

used to be the top pick because of the flawless, lightweight application, but they are easily damaged and usually shed bristles. They also absorb some of the product like natural hair does, so they’re not as sanitary. Synthetic brushes have come a long way in the past five years; they used to be hard and streaky, but nowadays you can find synthetic brushes that are just as flawless in application as natural hair brushes. Synthetic brushes also won’t absorb product, and you can use alcohol to sanitize because it won’t dry out the bristles. As a professional makeup artist, I personally use the line of synthetic brushes from Glo Skin Beauty.

How often should you clean your brushes?

What I recommend to my clients is sanitizing your brushes after every use and deep cleaning once a week. On my brushes, I use the Brush Cleaner from Glo Skin Beauty. You can spray your brushes after each use to sanitize, or for me when I’m working on multiple ladies in a bridal party, I deep clean once a week by spraying 3 times and swirling on a towel. What I love about this method of sanitizing is that it dries almost instantly, so I don’t have to wait overnight for clean brushes.

Keto Zuppa Toscana Soup This is a copycat version of the Olive Garden soup that is perfect for a chilly night. Made with sausage, bacon, cauliflower and kale or spinach. It’s a hearty soup that is perfect for dinner! INGREDIENTS

1 Pound Ground Italian sausage 1/2 t Crushed Red Pepper (to taste) 6 Slices Bacon, Cut Into Pieces 1/2 Medium Onion, Diced

1 T Minced Garlic 8 C Chicken Broth 4 C Cauliflower Florets 1 C Heavy Cream 5 C Kale or Spinach

DIRECTIONS

1. Cook the Italian sausage and red pepper flakes in a Dutch oven (or large pot with a lid) over medium-high heat until crumbly, browned, and no longer pink, 10 to 15 minutes. Drain, remove from pan, and set aside. The purpose of removing the sausage is so that you aren’t boiling it in broth. 2. Add the bacon and cook until crispy. Remove from pan. 3. Add the onions and garlic the the same Dutch oven; cook until onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. 4. Pour the chicken broth into the Dutch oven with the onion mixture; bring to a boil over high heat. Add the cauliflower, and boil until fork tender, about 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the heavy cream and the cooked sausage; heat through. he fascination and dexterity with computer hardware and technology started at age four for Marcus Hilderbrand with the encouragement of his uncle. His dad was in construction, but that arena didn’t grab his

attention either. As he matured, he even tried his hand at building games and discovered he wasn’t very good at it. But solving issues with computers? Tackling the ins and outs of hardware? That was the sweet spot for him, and that dedication and interest in technology has never waned. Perhaps that explains in part why he provides, after thirty years of experience and lots of innate talent, such high quality results and care to his clients.

After working for other companies, including Frye’s in Wilsonville for nearly three years, Marcus founded The Service Department in 2008 along with his high school friend, James Hennig. While Marcus runs the company and provides services to clients primarily at their Wilsonville office, James, who proudly wears the title of “Sometimes Silent Partner,” provides most of their in-home services. As Marcus summed their relationship up, “Where would I be without James?” Marcus has provided technology solutions to small businesses throughout his career. Looking back now, he realizes that he has been following in the footsteps and examples set by his father and grandfather who also focused on providing quality services to the small business community. inding the right auto service provider for your vehicle is never an easy task. Generally speaking though, we’re all looking for the same thing: someone we can trust. We want to take our vehicles to an organization that is well established, that employs ASE-Certified technicians, and that has a visible track record of success which we can access. In short, we want to take our vehicles to a shop like Lance’s Superior Auto Service right here in Wilsonville!

Why Lance’s? Well, for all those reasons listed above and more. Lance Griffin has been in the industry since 1978. He started working at a Chevron Station pumping gas in high school, then went to their tech school, where he took every course they offered. In 1982, he returned after testing and acquiring full ASE Certification (a designation that requires re-testing every 5 years to maintain), and worked as a technician for Chevron for another 14 years. An opportunity arose in 1996 for him to open his own service shop, and that was when Lance’s Superior Auto Service was born.

Lance is one of the greatest guys you’ll ever talk to. He is a local, born and raised, and truly cares about this community. He built his business on one solid pillar: treat your customers like friends and family. Beyond that, conduct business with absolute transparency. He believes in educating his customers, not selling them, so Lance’s will never do work that you’re not fully educated about, and you will never pay for anything you’re not prepared for.

In the beginning, he had 2 employees and leased a 4-bay garage that was on the same lot as the Chevron station where he had previously worked. As the business gained traction and word of his “superior service” spread, he needed to find a larger space. In 2004, he moved to the location where he still resides today; a prime location which boasts 7 bays, an alignment machine, a nice waiting room, and everything else you could ask for in a service shop. They are a general service shop, covering all of the bases from A-Z with only a few exceptions: they do not rebuild transmissions (although they can replace them), and they can’t reprogram computers 12 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • JANUARY 2022

The History of Fort Vancouver

Fur Traders, Settlers, And The Hudson Bay Company By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

or many of us, Fort Vancouver and fireworks are synonymous with the Fourth of July. As one of the region’s largest fireworks displays, thousands gather each year to enjoy the brilliant pyrotechnics exploding over the shimmering waters of the Columbia. This annual celebration could not be located at a more prominent site when considering the significance of Fort Vancouver to the history of our region.

source of revenue. American interests, on the other hand, centered primarily around the ownership of land for settlement and agricultural development. This conf lict of interests would eventually tilt in favor of the United States.

Established in 1824 as a trading post for the British Hudson Bay Company, Fort Vancouver was headquarters for the Company’s Columbia Department which covered 700,000 square miles stretching from Alaska to California, and from the Rocky Mountains to Hawaii. The fort was named after Captain George Vancouver, a British Naval officer known for his exploration of the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, Hawaii, and Australia.

Holding the position of Chief Factor for 22 years, McLoughlin administered the law among his British subjects, kept peace with the indigenous, and strived to maintain amicable relations with the American settlers in the nearby Willamette Valley. It was McLoughlin who had originally allowed Americans to settle south of the Columbia River, which earned him the title, “Father of Oregon.” Contrary to the wishes of the HBC, McLoughlin provided substantial aid to American settlers, and in 1846 he resigned from the Company to found Oregon City along the bank of the Willamette River.

George Simpson, an employee of the HBC, was initially responsible for founding the fort. However, it was Dr. John McLoughlin, the fort’s first Chief Factor (manager), who was instrumental in developing Fort Vancouver as a primary hub of commerce in the region. At the time, the northwest was still in f lux, with the f ledgling United States vying with Great Britain for dominance over the territory. The fur trade, which was well-established in the area, generated immense profits for the HBC, and the Company was committed to safeguarding this valuable

Fort Vancouver was originally composed of a 20-foot high palisade approximately 750 feet long by 450 feet wide. Inside the palisade were 40 buildings, including a school, library, pharmacy, chapel, and blacksmith shop, along with individual homes. Residing outside the walls were a tannery, shipyard, hospital, and distillery. Agricultural products were cultivated in the orchards and fields surrounding the fort, in addition to a dairy providing milk and cheese. At the height of its activity, Fort Vancouver employed up to 600 workers who

staffed its network of two dozen trading posts, with six ships regularly plying the waters of the Columbia in transport of the Company’s goods. It was one of the largest settlements in the West, and also served as the end-point for migrants on the Oregon Trail. Between 1840-1850, fur trading revenue began to decline as increasing settlement of the region led to an economic shift towards mercantile activities based largely on agriculture, livestock, and timber operations. Originally, the fort’s primary employees consisted of French Canadians and members of indigenous tribes including the Metis, Iroquois and Cree. English, Scots, and Irish were found among the workforce as well. In the 1850s, workers from Hawaii arrived to augment the burgeoning enterprise, and in time became so populous that the village outside the fort became known as “Kanaka Town” or “Kanaka Village.” “Kanaka” translates roughly to “Hawaiian native,” or “Pacific Islander.” By 1849, this multi-cultural village was home not only to the employees of the HBC, but also became the site of Camp Columbia, a military base for the U.S. Army located on a rise 20 feet above the fort. Initially, traders and soldiers coexisted amicably at the fort. The Army provided additional employment for local workers and rented buildings in the village. The HBC allowed the Army access to its sawmill for cutting timber to construct the military post. During this period the Army built a number of structures, including the Quartermaster Depot and Captain Rufus Ingalls’ home, where the future Civil War general and U.S. President, Ulysses S. Grant, lived from 1852-1853. In time, the Army expanded the post to more than 10,000 acres and renamed it Fort Vancouver Military Reservation.

land overlapped the HBC’s fur trade activities, sparked conf licts between the Company and the United States. In June of 1860, the HBC withdrew from Fort Vancouver and consolidated its operations in Victoria, British Columbia. Following the departure of the HBC, the Army took over the fort and commenced adding additional facilities, notably the Vancouver Arsenal in 1859. Unfortunately, catastrophe struck in 1866 when a fire broke out that destroyed the entire original trading post. Over time soldiers rebuilt the fort, adding two double-story barracks at each end of the parade grounds. Officer quarters were also erected during this phase. In 1879, the post was renamed the Vancouver Barracks, and by World War I it had grown considerably. Upon the outbreak of World War II, the Army mobilized the post as a staging area for the Seattle Port of Embarkation. In 1946, the fort was officially closed. To honor Fort Vancouver’s historical significance, on June 19, 1948, the site was declared a U.S. National Monument. It was re-designated “Fort Vancouver National Historic Site” on June 30, 1961. Today, visitors can tour a full-scale replica of the original fort, including historical re-enactments and exhibits commemorating this iconic landmark, a site that figured prominently in our regional heritage.

In the wake of the 1846 Oregon Treaty, which established the U.S./Canadian border at the 49th parallel north, Fort Vancouver was effectively isolated within U.S. borders. And while the treaty provided for the HBC to continue operations at Fort Vancouver—including free access to the Columbia, Puget Sound, and Straits of Juan de Fuca—conducting business had become problematic. off when she got hired almost immediately as a graphic artist for MacMillan McGraw-Hill, a company which produced textbooks. She did that for almost a decade before moving back to Portland (where she had lived previously). Upon Jeanie’s return, her sister introduced her to a relatively new but burgeoning company by the name of Jackson Pacific, where she still works today (although she technically retired in 2017). Jackson Pacific is known around the world for producing beautiful customized brass ornaments, the kind you might find at many vacation destination spots! Pittock Mansion, Camp 18, and the OHSU Tram are just a few of the local attractions boasting such ornaments, many of which were designed by Jeanie. lthough there are always exceptions to the rule, it’s safe to assume that most of us have done a little traveling at some point in our lives, even if only around the state of Oregon. Often our travels likely included an interesting destination, like the picturesque Oregon coast or majestic Crater Lake, or perhaps just a pit stop at a random fantastical site claiming to be the “World’s Only This” or the “Country’s Biggest That.” Inevitably, with eyes full of wonder, many of us simply refused to leave without a souvenir to commemorate our experience; but did you ever wonder where those souvenirs might have come from? Let me introduce you to Jeanie Clarke. Born in South America and raised in New York, Jeanie came from an artistic family. Her father was a painter and several other relatives on her father’s side designed Hallmark cards, so Jeanie was exposed to the arts from an early age and was encouraged to develop her own style of creative outlet. In grade school, art classes were her favorite field of study, but she’d always had a practical side as well. The plight of the tortured starving artist did not appeal to her, and so she earned a much more marketable degree in Graphic Arts from Monterey Peninsula College in California.
