DAN REED

For the Love of Paint By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

e’re all familiar with Dan Reed, the musician. Born and raised right here in Portland, Oregon, he’s our hometown hero who has been rocking and rolling across the globe with his band, the Dan Reed Network, since 1987. Incidentally, the Dan Reed Network is preparing now to unleash their exciting new album, Let’s Hear It For The King, to a fervent and anxious fanbase. But music alone does not define the man; Dan is a multifaceted artist expressing himself through a variety of creative endeavors. Most significantly, outside of his musical career, he has also become an avid and revered painter. He actually started painting back in college. He took some classes and produced some beautiful work, but when his musical career took off, painting naturally took a back seat. It wasn’t until years later, after Dan became disillusioned with the music industry and he put the band on hiatus, that he returned to the canvas. They were dark times. He had traveled the world in support of The Rolling Stones, he had reached the pinnacle of success, scaled the very heights of Mt. Olympus, but inside he was feeling empty, bereft of joy and inspiration. Painting allowed him the freedom he’d been missing in music. Without the strict “guidance” of labels and overeager A&R representatives making their demands, telling him what to play, how to play, and how to look, he was finally able to express himself more authentically. There were no rules, no borders; only the edges of the frame to restrict his flow. And it was transformative! Along with his spiritual journey (he spent years meditating and studying at a monastery), the demons 12 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2022

he was able to exorcise through the process of putting paint to canvas, helped him navigate those dark corridors and return to a path of wellness and light. Although he has returned to music, and the fans are all grateful, Dan hasn’t given up his “second love” this time around. Painting allows his creativity of expression to simply flow. They are all abstract pieces, informed by internal emotion and mood versus being representative, realistic compositions. They are fascinating to behold, full of depth and color, inviting thorough examination and discussion over the feelings they evoke. They are the kinds of paintings you can stare at for hours, continuously finding new and interesting patterns as they emerge. So there you have it. Dan Reed: accomplished musician and painter. Let’s start with massage

The suction may feel tight at first (but not painful) while it draws your tissue up into the cup. The suction action engages the parasympathetic nervous system, thus allowing a deep relaxation to move through the entire body. It is not unusual to fall asleep when receiving this treatment. The cups will stay in place for 5-20 minutes, depending on your specific needs. When it’s time to remove the cups, the release of pressure often feels calming, your body feels instantly lighter and less tense. Impressive, huh?!

MUSIC FOR EVERYONE

ilsonville’s Concert School of Music opens in a new location! As of August 1st, the Concert School of Music will be operating from a new and much larger facility just off Boones Ferry Road and SW Pioneer Court in Wilsonville. With more than double the space of their previous spot in Wilsonville Town Center, Concert School of Music is able to offer the Wilsonville community so much more. More classes, more programs, and more interaction with the community! “We are so excited to begin this new phase,” says Lori Givens, founder and co-owner of the business. After occupying the Town Center venue for the past 29 years, fate forced its hand and Concert School of Music had no choice but to move on, and in this case—move upward. Vacating the Town Center space in May, Concert School of Music has held virtual classes while undergoing construction at the new location. With its opening in August, the new space allows Concert School of Music larger lesson rooms and the ability to add more classes. The Recital Hall, for instance, will host a number of group classes and also serve as a rehearsal space. Concert School of Music’s newly adopted slogan, “Music for Everyone,” encompasses the wide range of infants through adults of all ages, regardless of musical interest, background, training, or skill level. Classes the school is particularly proud to offer are Mini Mozarts (earlychildhood music education) and Concert Kids (children ages 4-6). More adult group classes such as ukulele and guitar are also offered, and XLR, the rock band program, is being expanded. The Chamber Music program is resuming—now with ample room. Theory Thursdays is a class whereby kids learn music theory and gain understanding of how to play their instruments better. “Our big one,” says Lori, “is The Young Composers Society.” Kids 20 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2022

can learn how to compose, and their pieces are performed by professional musicians. The additional staff of 15 professional musicians allows Concert School of Music to teach all the different instruments: piano, voice, guitar, drums, as well as all other instruments. Most teachers are performing musicians, and all are exceptionally good at their discipline. Lori and Nathan Givens, coowners of Concert School of Music, live in Wilsonville along with their three sons (Elijah 17, Mason 14, and Hudson 12), and all play string instruments. Lori and Nathan both play viola and violin, and the boys each chose “what they really connect with”—Elijah, upright bass and electric bass; Mason, viola; Hudson, cello—Elijah and Mason are also starting piano and composition. The Givens family are 3rd generation performers for the Portland Youth Philharmonic (formerly Portland Junior Symphony). Nathan’s grandmother, Lori and Nathan, and now

their boys share this very special connection. The Givens try to give back as much as they can to the Portland Youth Philharmonic. “It’s one of those organizations that really changes your life, and we just want to be part of that music community,” Lori professes. Straight out of college, with a music degree from the prestigious Indiana University (Jacobs) School of Music, Lori went to work for Music Man Studio in Wilsonville. A couple years down the road, Music Man put the business up for sale and Lori bought it. It was 1999 and Lori was in her early 20s and on her own. “I just always wanted to mix music and business,” she explains. “I come from an entrepreneurial family and this just felt right.” A few years later she hired Nathan, they went on to marry, “and the rest is history,” she chuckles. Nathan took on co-ownership, he teaches violin and viola, conducts the orchestra, and is trained in 3 different states as a luthier. The Quartet Violin Shop is also an integral facet of the Concert School of Music, but maintains its own identity. The new location affords the shop a designated entry apart from the Concert School of Music, and includes a workshop and luthier. Offering an affordable rental program and full-service amenities, the shop provides accessories and repairs, and assures that all instruments leaving through its doors are “good instruments, set up correctly, and capable of producing a positive learning experience,” says Lori. String instruments are also available for purchase, and whether brand new, or tried and true, string instruments only increase in value, so your purchase is truly an investment. Re-branded in 2017, Music Man Studio became Concert School of Music because “we kind of accidently started the violin shop,” Lori relates. Trying to supply instruments for the community, because “there weren’t really other options available,” imparted an

additional focus within the business. This aspect of the business continued to grow, resulting in the need for a complete and independent violin shop.

performance. With the younger children in mind, instruments will be performed solo then played together to hear how they sound individually and in unison.

Living and working locally, the Givens feel the importance of giving back to the community. They participate in outreach programs and are extremely excited by their new location because the Recital Hall will provide the needed space to give free concerts. These concerts will have a focus toward children, as many have little or no knowledge of the various instruments and rarely have the opportunity to experience live music. At Concert School of Music, families can come and enjoy a free live music

After all, this charming beach community is a short scenic drive from the city, the perfect place to stroll the beach, shop, or enjoy an ice cream cone while people-watching on Main Street. Have you ever wondered though, about the origins of this cherished beach community? Archaeological records indicate the Cannon Beach area was inhabited by early ancestors of the indigenous Tillamook people as early as the 15th century. Swan Island Dahlias: A Work of Heart “A beautiful garden is a work of heart” By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

t has become increasingly difficult over the past few years to find inspiration in the world, to find reasons to smile. We have sometimes felt overwhelmed, gotten caught up in the negatives, and neglected to appreciate the simpler pleasures in life. Quite literally, we have forgotten to stop and smell the flowers. In order to rectify that situation, though, we need look no further than our own backyards. Swan Island Dahlias, the largest and leading dahlia grower in the entire country, is located right here in Canby, and they want nothing more than to simply share the fruits of their labor with all of us and return that smile to our faces! Established in 1927—with acreage in Portland and on Swan Island, hence the name—the farm was relocated to Canby in 1953. It was purchased by the Gitts family in 1963, and since then has doubled in size and scope. Still owned and operated by the Gitts family to this day, during the blooming season the farm boasts almost 50 acres of the most dazzling, varied, and unique dahlias you’ve ever seen. With 370+ varieties on display, and on average roughly 10 new varieties introduced every year, there’s always something new and exciting to be found.

Gitts Family Prior to the pandemic, the farm hosted a six-day dahlia festival every summer, split between two weekends. Since then, they have adapted to our advantage. Now Swan Island Dahlias is open to the public for two full months, from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30. It’s free to attend, free to park, and if the stunning, world-class assortment of gorgeous flowers isn’t enough to lure you, then perhaps the adorable gift shop will. If not that, then the food—anywhere from two to six food trucks are on site at all times, the educational classes (art, health and beauty, floral arranging, dahlia care, and more), or the entertainment (live music every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 pm) certainly will. This is truly the hidden gem of the Willamette Valley. You don’t want to miss it. Three generations have proudly run Swan Island Dahlias. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with Heather GittsSchloe, daughter of Nicholas and Linda Gitts (who currently run the farm) and granddaughter of Nick and Margaret Gitts, who initially purchased the farm back in 1963. Her passion and love for the farm was evident in every word she spoke. Some of us work to live, but clearly she and her family live to work (on this farm). Superman I-IV (1978, 1980, 1983, 1987)

Started 44 years ago, Superman I and Superman II blew peoples’ minds! I think this franchise’s success greatly depends upon visionary director Richard Donner, who directed great movies like the Lethal Weapon series and cult classics The Goonies & The Lost Boys. These movies are action-packed, funny, and just solid entertainment (III & IV aren’t as great, but still good). The starstudded cast includes Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Ned Beatty (Otis), and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), among others. But let’s not forget Christopher Reeve, a Cornell and Juilliard School graduate, and classically trained actor. His simple spandex, dark slicked hair and curl were true to the comics, and his kind, sly, understated demeanor were fantastic—the Man of Steel was a true American hero. He played Clark Kent exactly as he should be—meek, bumbling, and clumsy, in the iconic thick black glasses. And that Clark Kent good-naturedness carries into his Superman, an altruistic and all-powerful alien who finds his humanity. Rated PG, watch these classics!

Brandon Routh:

Superman Returns (2006)

The black sheep of Superman movies, Bryan Singer directed and wrote the story, who also directed the hit or miss X-Men movies and the recently acclaimed Bohemian Rhapsody. Although visually slick, the pacing is a bit slow, the story too focused on romance instead of action, and Brandon Routh’s Superman is a tad stoic. That said, it’s polished and watchable, but not my favorite. Co-starring Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), James Marsden (Richard White), and Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski), and others. Rated PG-13, it’s a solid entry in the Superman cinematic universe.

Henry Cavill:

Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017)

Heir apparent to Christopher Reeve and bearing an incredible resemblance, Henry Cavill has 3 films under his belt as Superman and he’s fantastic! Cavill’s Superman is just as sly, kind, and softspoken as Reeve’s, but he’s much more ripped and modern in today’s superhero heyday. Ultimately, you just like Cavill and want to root for him. Directed by the polarizing, long-winded, but reliable Zack Snyder, the movies are visually spectacular, action-packed, funny, and really fun to watch. Man of Steel has a star-studded cast rivaling the original movies, including Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Russel Crowe (Jor-El), and more. BvS and Justice League are team-up movies but still Supermancentric and solid entertainment. Rated PG-13, give them a watch!
