hen you read “Brazilian Waxing” do you get excited or do you clench your jaw? You may be thinking that you would never! But trust me a good Brazilian is life changing. What is Brazilian waxing? It is the name given to the waxing service where all hair is removed from the private area down south. In the western world, it acquired the name “Brazilian waxing” because of the skimpy bikinis that the Brazilian natives have been known for wearing. Brazilian waxing in a spa refers to 100% of the hair being removed. Front, sides, inside, plus the backside. All gone and 100% smooth. Why would anyone get this? Well if you know you know! The other 2 options are to do nothing and be wild and free, or to shave. Shaving can be uncomfortable, itchy, and lead to ingrown hairs. Shaving may not give you the look that you want either, if you are planning on wearing a bathing suit. What can you expect? Your experience may differ depending on where you go, who you see, and what type of wax they use. At our spa we make you feel as comfortable as possible in every way. reat yourself to good times and great food at Tualatin’s perennial favorite watering hole, The CI Bar & Grill! This is no flash in the pan, hereone-day-gone-the-next, sort of establishment. The CI Bar & Grill has been a local area landmark ever since the 1930’s, when it was originally known as The Spot Tavern. Ownership changed hands in 1974, and it was rebranded as the Country Inn, but as you can imagine, some people were confused by the new name, mistaking it for either a country bar or a hotel. Keeping the initials, they simplified it to CI and since then they’ve consistently provided the best food, drink, and entertainment in the area!

Owner Dave Phillips is exactly the kind of person who should own a popular bar and grill; warm, friendly, personable, but with just the right amount of gruffness. You just know this guy has seen and heard it all. He’s your best friend; the bartender you spill your guts to because you know he’s going to give it to you straight. His natural and sincere affinity for people is a prerequisite for the position, but you also know intuitively that this is a man who commands your respect. Dave started at CI in 1994 when he was hired as General Manager. He worked there for 20 years before taking over in 2014. Since he’d been there for so long, the transition was seamless, and for all intents and 6 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2021

purposes, Dave considers the place to have been under the same ownership all that time. It’s the same situation regarding the staff. Most of the employees have been with Dave for 15 to 20 years, and he says he has the best crew in the business! He is so pleased and grateful to have an amazing kitchen staff, too. Everyone works hard and gets along, so it’s just one big happy family! Dave is exceedingly proud of the fact that the quality of the food they serve is not what you’d typically expect to find at a bar and grill of this sort. First and foremost, everything is made from scratch; they’re not grabbing stuff out of the freezer and tossing it in the microwave here. You’re getting honest-to-goodness real food, made with real ingredients, using recipes that are unique to the CI! Dave put it this way: they run their business, and in particular they design their menu, around their regulars. In other words, he maintains such high standards of quality and provides such a variety, that the people who are coming in multiple times per week, can enjoy

CLACKAMAS COUNTY FAIR AND RODEO

n a lot of ways, the overall state of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center could be summed up in six words: “The fair is on for 2021!”

Actually, a lot of events are returning to the fairgrounds this year, along with a few new ones that relocated there for this year, including the Cutsforth’s Cruise-In Car Show and Junk Refunk Street Market. But the true marker of success for the area’s summer events calendar was always going to be the beloved County Fair Clackamas County’s largest annual event, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the state. The Fair Board voted unanimously to move forward with the County Fair and Rodeo in June, based on the recommendation of Fairgrounds Executive Director Laurie Bothwell that the board move forward. “I’ve done a lot of fairs,” Bothwell said. “We have been through 100-degree weather that wasn’t budgeted or expected… And we have survived. I think we can survive this very easily. I think it would be a big mistake to not move forward with both the fair and rodeo. The phone is ringing off the hook for both.” This year’s fair will include the traditional talent show and other entertainment, with a larger and slightly modified carnival that may offer tickets based on a certain time window rather than number of rides. The Pioneer Village is also coming back, and will be bigger and better than ever. The level of excitement for this year’s fair, in and even outside the community, is unlike anything Bothwell and her team have seen.The Rodeo Board had also made the decision to move forward with the annual rodeo, citing the event’s importance to the community. The rodeo has become a beloved tradition in Clackamas County. Board member Todd Gary says, “It’s been a tradition for a long time, and there’ve been some really, really great people over the years who have poured so much into this rodeo. It’s almost unbelievable. And that’s really what’s at the heart of this event.” The fair is a cherished annual event dating back more than a century in Clackamas County, having been held annually since 1907 — with the only exceptions being cancellations in 1917-18 during World War I, 1942-45 during World War II, and 2020. 14 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2021

A slew of other events and attractions are also returning to the fairgrounds later this year. The Cutsforth’s Cruise-In, a popular grassroots showcase of hot rods, classic cars and other unique roadsters, will be back at the fairgrounds on August 28th. And the Clackamas County Scare Fair, a drivethru attraction that drew thousands to the fairgrounds during the pandemic last fall, will be returning through October. Last year, the first-of-its-kind attraction combined the talents of some of Oregon’s top haunted houses and production companies, including Fearlandia, Davis Graveyard, The Nightmare Factory and Creatures of the Night. It was a huge success and I’m sure we’re all thrilled to have it back again this year! The Country Christmas Bazaar will also be held late in the fall,

from November 8th through the 13th, followed by the Clackamas County Winter Fair, another holidaythemed, drive-thru attraction that debuted in 2020. This will be open from December 2nd through Christmas Eve. The Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo will be held August 17th-21st at the county fairgrounds in Canby. Tickets may be purchased online at clackamascountyfair.com. Ticket prices for the fair will be $10 for adult fair entrance, and $5 for children between the ages of 7-12 and seniors age 65-74. Children 6 and younger and seniors 75 and older get in free! Tickets for the rodeo are as follows: (Tues-Thurs) $10 general seating, $12 reserved, $13 grandstand, $20 bullpen; (Fri-Sat) $12 general, $13 reserved, $15 grandstand, $25 bullpen. Refreshing Summer Drinks Hot summer weather means we need to stay hydrated! Make sure to drink plenty of water, of course, but when you want something more flavorful, try out some of these ideas to keep things interesting.

WATERMELON LEMONADE:

CUCUMBER MINT GLOW WATER

DOLE WHIP LEMONADE

Combine half watermelon juice and half lemonade. To make it even more fun, freeze watermelon chunks ahead of time to use in place of ice cubes. They won’t water down your drink, and you have a snack once they thaw!

In a pitcher, mix 3 cans of seltzer with slices of cucumber and lemon, then add 3 sprigs of mint. Stir/muddle to release more flavor. So refreshing!

In a blender combine 1 cup frozen pineapple, 1 cup lemonade, and 1/2 cup coconut milk. Blend until smooth, then pour and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings *recipes reprinted from delish.com

adies and gentlemen, if you’re on the lookout for a place that sells unique, highly-stylized country fashion and more, look no further than locally-owned and operated The Barn Door Boutique and Decor! This store is the brainchild of 23 year old Lacey McGraw. It all began in the months following her graduation from Keystone High School. Those long summer days needed to be filled with some kind of activity, and Lacey soon discovered that she had a knack for leatherwork; specifically for repurposing (or upcycling as it’s called in the business) old leather belts into beautiful and fashionable new bracelets and earrings. Initially, it was just a hobby. She simply enjoyed the personal sense of satisfaction and instant gratification she received from creating something new, but with her instinctive fashion sense and creative flair, her friends thought differently. They so loved the items she was fashioning that they began placing orders, and before long she could hardly keep up. There were tools and supplies taking over her mother’s kitchen table! Things were going so well, and she was enjoying the work so much, that she reconsidered her original plans to attend college, and decided instead to follow this new entrepreneurial path.

but all that elbow grease paid off. In April of 2019, The Barn Door Boutique and Decor opened their doors for the first time. On the first day of business, she sold 75% of her inventory! It was a scramble to design and order more items to fill the store, but luckily there were a number of local artists who were excited and inspired by what she was doing, and wanted to be a part of it. Several of these people brought in their own hand-made fashion items and wares and that helped fill the space. It took a good 9 months or so for Lacey to decipher which items were popular sellers and which ones didn’t need to be reordered, but eventually, she found the right balance. The events of 2020 threw a bit of a wrench into the works, of course, but thanks to a very generous and anonymous donation she received from the city of Canby, Lacey and her business have been able to survive. She is sincerely grateful to all who participated in the donation. That, along with the support of her wonderful friends and family (her mom Cindy, and cousin Sophia in particular), as well as on-line sales has helped keep the dream alive!

When her mother (a local real estate agent) made her aware of some local office space that had just become available in downtown Canby, Lacey initially planned to make it a workshop. After some brainstorming and helpful guidance from friends, however, she decided to go the retail route and turn it into a boutique. It took a month of carefullytimed remodeling, in which Lacey and her family went in every night so as not to disturb the adjoining business and often worked into the wee hours of the next morning, 22 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2021

CELEBRATING SMILES National Smile Week By Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

he second week of August is National Smile Week, an effort that was primarily started as a campaign to focus on dental health. While oral hygiene is of the utmost importance and should not be overlooked, I think that this year in particular (after 18 months of covering our faces), National Smile Week may have acquired an additional layer of significance. How long has it been since we ventured out into public and could clearly see the faces of everyone around us? How many months have we gone without seeing the smiles of the people we interact with on a daily basis? After all of this time, let’s take the opportunity to appreciate the impact that smiling has on our lives, our relationships, and our wellbeing. First of all, smiling can actually make you happier. We’ve all heard the saying “fake it till you make it,” and smiling is a great example of how this works. Say you’re having a terrible, no-good, very bad day. You can frown your way through it, which will actually make your mood worse, or you can smile. The facial muscles used to smile trigger neurotransmitters in the brain that have the power to make us feel happier. These include the natural antidepressants dopamine and serotonin, as well as endorphins, which help us relax. Ever heard the old adage that “laughter is the best medicine”? There’s a reason for that. In order to laugh you must smile first, which we already know changes brain chemistry, and when you have more “happy hormones” that directly affects your body. Smiling can not only reduce stress and make us feel happier, but some studies have found that it may also improve our immune systems and help us fight off illness.

Believe it or not, faking a smile when you’re stressed can also help protect your heart. Just as it directly affects the brain, smiling can also reduce the increase in heart rate and breathing that we naturally experience under pressure. So the next time you’re struggling with a difficult situation, rather than letting your frown bring you down, try turning it around! You may be surprised how much better you feel. Smiling also affects our confidence and sociability. When we smile, we appear more approachable, friendly, relaxed, and (as an added bonus) younger! A genuine smile makes you seem open to others, which in turn makes others want to be around you. Better social interactions and improved relationships are big boosters when it comes to confidence and self esteem. Not to mention that smiling is contagious! After this last year and a half, that word may not be the most appealing one to use, but it’s true. Thankfully this is the kind of contagion that we want to spread. When interacting with others, we have a natural reaction called “facial mimicry,” meaning that when someone smiles at us, we do the same. When you smile at someone else, they are likely to smile back, and thus gain all the benefits of smiling that were previously mentioned. Smile at someone today and you might just start a mood boosting chain reaction! There you have it. Smiling is a crucial factor in improving our emotions, our health, and our relationships. Make it a point to smile as much as possible today, and don’t forget to take care of that smile by making regular visits to your dentist! That doesn’t mean that it’s not still a terrific time to sell, but it does mean that the market is finally starting to adjust. Buyers are getting a little more savvy and people in general are moving more towards suburban neighborhoods rather than the cities. Since construction is more active in suburban areas, the inventory crunch is beginning, if only slightly, to ease up. What does that mean for the consumer?
