A FAMILY’S PASSION BECOMES A COMMUNITY’S TREASURE written by Courtney Smith
ilsonville Equestrian Center, established in 2008, originally got its start as the old Boston Morgan Farm on Boeckman Road. Owner Maren wanted to bring her daughter’s horse home to Wilsonville from Estacada, where it was being boarded. At the time they lived on Frog Pond and could see an arena from the back of their property. Upon going over to inquire if they could bring their horse over for lessons, they discovered that the place was empty. They did some investigating, found the owner of the property and made a deal to lease it. Since they now had the space, the decision to begin boarding horses themselves was a natural one, and the business has grown from there. When the property was later converted for development and housing, they were forced to relocate. Fortunately they soon fell in love with their new location on 82nd Avenue, just north of

Wilsonville. It fit all of the criteria that was needed to be successful as a boarding facility, a riding academy and a summer camp venue. With the family’s love for horses, the business is also a passion project. Maren and her daughter both ride, and her family loves animals of all kinds. Besides horses they have also had exotic birds, rats, dogs, cats and turtles as pets. Maren’s experience with horses has continued to grow, though she would say that she is a very casual rider. She enjoys going horse camping in the woods when she has time, and being at the beach. Maren has gone to a few shows with friends but never with the intent of winning big. What she enjoys most is connecting with the animals; brushing
has had many students go on to other disciplines after riding. The most rewarding part is when they come back to check in and say hello. It makes Maren feel good to know that she had a part in shaping their journey as equestrians, no matter where they ride now.

Wilsonville Equestrian Center offers many week-long day camps during the summer. The camps are a lot of fun and every day looks a bit different. They do lots of educational instruction on how to take care of horses, whether that’s how to clean a stall or paddock, or the correct way to groom and tack up a horse. They also teach anatomy and gaits. In one of the teen camps last year they used microscopes and centrifuges to look for parasites in the horse feces. A little biology is cool and everyone loved the educational side of the camp. They do arts and crafts as well, and the kids have a riding lesson every day leading up to a little horse show at the end of the week. The camps are from 9am till 1pm and they go all summer long. Here’s a great piece of news for aspiring riders: you don’t need to bring your own horse when you go to the Wilsonville Equestrian Center’s summer camps. They have 12 horses of all sizes that can be used by campers, including beginner horses and more advanced horses depending on each camper’s needs.
discover. Not every horse has the temperament to be a lesson horse, so when Maren is buying a horse that is not suited she tries to find them a home that suits their needs and abilities. The philosophy and practice at Wilsonville Equestrian Center does not involve locking the horses in. Each one of the stalls is connected to a large paddock at least 500 ft long. The horses only get stalled if they are injured or if the weather might compromise their safety. It goes against their nature to be boxed in, and Wilsonville Equestrian’s horses tend to be much calmer and less anxious because they are not cooped up. The new barns are designed to have lots of air flow and open space. Wilsonville Equestrian Center is not a competition barn. They teach English Riding and want to teach kids to love the animals and enjoy the learning process. Maren personally wants to see kids progress safely in their riding skills, and she
They also offer riding lessons for all ages, beginning as young as age 3 and going up to age 80. The younger riders start with a “mommy and me” class where moms walk beside the horses while the instructor leads and gives instructions. Most lessons are taught in group fashion. The Equestrian Center is involved with the local community on many different levels. They have been involved with the Library’s summer bookworm program for the past few years, and they support local high school equestrian teams. Maren and her team do their best to be on the lookout for new opportunities to give back to the community.

Spring Is Upon Us
elcome to spring! A time when “April showers bring May flowers,” fresh starts begin, spring cleaning kicks off, and religious traditions of all sorts are commemorated through holidays such as Passover, Ramadan, and Easter. It’s a time to remind us that even the most unpleasant of situations, in this case the heavy rains of April, can bring about wonderful things indeed -- even an abundance of flowers in May. “April showers bring May flowers” is also a lesson in patience, and one that remains valid to this day.
Many of life’s greatest rewards come only to those who wait, and by patiently and happily enduring the clouds and damp of April, you may find that you have a greater appreciation as you take in the sights and smells of May. This may also result in a more optimistic outlook on life, and you certainly can’t go wrong by looking on the bright side of things in the Spring! For followers of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, the Spring season is also a time to reflect on religious history and teachings. Passover is a holiday commemorating the Hebrews’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and the “passing over” of the forces of destruction, or the sparing of the firstborn of the Israelites, when the Lord “smote the land of Egypt” on the eve of the Exodus. The festival thus marks the first and most momentous event in Jewish history, and it is the oldest continuously celebrated Jewish festival. Passover is sometimes called the Festival of Unleavened Bread. During the festival only bread without yeast (leavening), or unraised bread, may be consumed. This symbolizes both the Hebrews’ suffering while in bondage and the haste with which they left Egypt in the course of the Exodus. This year Passover starts at Sundown on April 8th, and will be celebrated by many with family gatherings, a festival meal, and special foods, including unleavened bread, or matzos. Islamic tradition states that it was during Ramadan, on the “Night of Power,” that God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad the Qurʾān, Islam’s holy book, “as a guidance for the people.” For Muslims,

Ramadan is a period of introspection, communal prayer in the mosque, and reading of the Qurʾān. God forgives the past sins of those who observe the holy month with fasting, prayer, and faithful intention. Ramadan, however, is less a period of atonement than it is a time for Muslims to practice self-restraint, in keeping with the practice of ṣawm (from Arabic: “to refrain”) which is one of the Pillars of Islam. Although ṣawm is most commonly understood as the obligation to fast during Ramadan, it is more broadly interpreted as the obligation to refrain from food, drink, sexual activity, and all forms of immoral behavior between dawn and dusk, including impure or unkind thoughts. Thus, false words or bad deeds or intentions are as destructive to a fast as is eating or drinking. Easter, like Christmas, has accumulated a great many traditions, some of which have to do with the Christian celebration of the Resurrection Marissa Fladwood of Jesus, but others that derive from folk and pagan customs. The custom of the Easter lamb appropriates both the appellation used for Jesus in Scripture (“behold the lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world,” John 1:29) and the lamb’s role as a sacrificial animal in ancient Israel. In antiquity, Christians placed lamb meat under the altar, had it blessed, and then ate it on Easter. Since the 12th century the Lenten fast has ended on Easter with meals including eggs, ham, cheeses, bread and sweets that have been blessed for the occasion. The common tradition of an Easter egg hunt, however, originated with pagan spring celebrations of fertility. Flowers are a common Easter decoration as they symbolize the theme of rebirth, which can have religious or pagan connotations, and the famous Easter Bunny is a result of folkloric traditions, as rabbits were considered a symbol of fertility. Whether you ascribe to any of these religious celebrations, or just love Spring and all that it symbolizes, be sure to surround yourself with people that make you happy, reflect on what is good in your life, and enjoy the warming weather!

The Country Cottage has been partnering closely with the Woodburn community for years. Since 2002 they have supported youth sports, donated to many charitable events and auctions, including Relay for Life and Rotary events, and have worked with Woodburn High School honor students and participated in job-shadowing programs. They also have a private space to celebrate special events and reservations are always available for larger parties.
Country Cottage would like the community to know that for them it’s not about the paycheck, but rather the love and joy they feel every day serving their patrons and community. She taught him the fundamentals of cooking and how to truly put love into each one of the dishes. In time he was cooking with her side by side for all major holidays and nightly for their family. When he was 15, he got a job as a dish washer in his first kitchen, Rimrock Café. As soon as the opportunity presented itself, he began making soups, salads and specials

for the kitchen there. Immediately he knew he was hooked; from the moment he finished creating his first soup he knew what he wanted to do with his life.

Chef Tull dedicated himself to arriving early and staying late, putting himself through the school of hard knocks. As he moved through the country, gathering new inspiration from the 30 restaurants he was so blessed work in, nothing stopped this determined young chef from cultivating his passion. In Las Vegas, Pendleton, Portland and Bend, each kitchen he stepped foot into shaped the journey he was on to becoming a top-tier chef. Chef Tull became classically trained in French cuisine and to this day still loves how it influenced his palate, but he has always had a passion for Italian cooking and is thrilled to now be able to explore that passion to its fullest. “It’s a 7 day a week job, yet it is incredibly rewarding to be able to have my hand in every piece of the restaurant” said Chef Tull. Dedicating his life to achieve this goal only pushed him
to the customers. Supporting local businesses is a top priority and without this focus, Abella would just be like any other generic Italian restaurant, instead of the first-class, local gem of an establishment that it is. Abella Italian Kitchen has cultivated a warm, inviting and beautiful atmosphere, where all are welcome. From the waitstaff to the kitchen crew, they know that a memorable dining experience is important and they do their utmost to make it a wonderful one.
