TASTE OF THE TOWN

Abella Italian Kitchen

T

here is a famous Italian quote that states, “Anni e bicchieri di vino non si contano mai.” Translation: “Age and glasses of wine should never be counted.” Italians have their priorities straight, don’t they? Italian culture can be a great reminder about the importance of focusing on things that bring us joy; things like music, family, laughter, and of course, food.

Great food, great wine, and great company are hallmarks of the Italian way, and for anyone who has lived in or around Wilsonville for any length of time, you’ll know that we have a little piece of that Italian culture right here locally at Abella Italian Kitchen. Abella is also one of the very best places in the area for upscale dining, while not seeming overly stuffy or pretentious. Cozy, yet elegant; elevated, yet absolutely accessible. There’s an element of sophistication combined with the relaxed atmosphere true to any authentic Italian establishment that makes it the ideal place to impress business associates, visiting relatives, or a first date. It’s simultaneously 10 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • MARCH 2021

the perfect spot to take the entire family out for a wonderful meal or to celebrate an intimate anniversary dinner. Abella has been a fixture of Wilsonville since 2007, and if you haven’t had a meal there in that time, you’ve been missing out! If you’ve been in before, but haven’t visited recently due to closures and restrictions, it’s time to get back out there. They’ve missed you! In case you need a reminder of their incredible menu, Abella’s offerings reside in that sweet spot between “fancy food” and “comfort food.” Every item they serve is made from scratch, with perfectly fresh ingredients and is completely delicious and unique to their kitchen. You won’t find these exact recipes anywhere else, and they are so far beyond what passes for “Italian food” at big chain restaurants, you can’t even make the comparison. The bottom line is this: if you like Italian food in general, you’re going to adore what they serve at Abella.

Chicken Parmesan is their number one seller and it’s no wonder why! The natural boneless chicken breast is pounded thin and breaded with Italian bread crumbs, then pressed on the grill until golden brown and finished with tomato basil Napoli and provolone cheese. It’s served over angel hair pasta tossed with house Alfredo sauce. The Napoli sauce is their own recipe, of course, which was heavily inspired by trips to Naples, and their special house Alfredo sauce is rich and creamy. The pairing is unique and unbelievably delicious!

Another favorite is their classic Fettuccine Alfredo which comes with their house roasted garlic alfredo sauce, parmesan cheese and fresh herbs. Their four different varieties of Ravioli (Butternut Squash, Wild Mushroom, Seafood, and Tuscan Seafood) are all popular choices too, as is their Large Prawns & Sea Scallops Risotto. Is your mouth watering yet? Some of their now-standard menu items started out as weekly specials. Both the Steak Gorgonzola Alfredo and the Italian Cordon Bleu are dishes that started out as specials but were so popular that they decided to serve them all the time. If you’re looking for something lighter they have a fantastic selection of salads to choose from, and a delicious minestrone soup, as well as a soup of the day. How about dessert? Favorites in that category include the traditional and delectable Tiramisu, Chocolate Lava Cake, Crème Brûlée, and their Double-Chocolate Tort, made with both white and dark chocolate mousse over a graham cracker crust. They also have specials which sometimes include Marionberry Cheesecake or Kahlua Tiramisu Cheesecake. Everything is displayed on a tray so you can choose what looks best to you! Jennifer Gage is the new owner of Abella, and she has so much love for this restaurant and for the city of Wilsonville. She is doing everything in her power to honor the legacy of the previous owners while also making the place her own. She has retained the existing staff, some of whom have been there for over a decade, and all have great passion and experience. Of course, taking over a business just months prior to a worldwide pandemic presented quite a challenge. They have limited staff and regulations change weekly, but Jennifer has remained optimistic and is so grateful to her wonderful team and the Wilsonville community for all

of the support. She hopes that as things reopen they will continue to be the area’s premiere restaurant for special occasions. Abella Italian Kitchen is now open for on-site dining with reservations (and will continue to be, provided that regulations allow for it, so check their website for updates.) That said, they’ve also updated their website for improved on-line ordering, including photos of each meal, for those who prefer to order out. However you choose to dine, it remains vitally important to support local businesses during this time. If you don’t want big chains to become your only option for Italian cuisine, be sure to support this true local treasure and help them keep their doors open! Abella Italian Kitchen is located at 8309 SW Main Street in Wilsonville. Visit abellaitaliankitchen.com to see their menu and check updates on their policies at this time. To make a reservation, call 503-582-1201 or see their website.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Lance’s Superior Auto Service By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos By Carly Carpenter

F

or many of us, the vehicle we drive is a prized possession, or at the very least it’s one of the more expensive items we own, so it’s important to find the best service center possible to maintain and care for it. The right provider could conceivably save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars, on top of ensuring that your car is safe and able to stay on the road as long as possible. Here in Wilsonville, look no further than Lance’s Superior Auto Service! They handle all automotive maintenance services from A-Z so no matter what you need, they have it covered. From oil changes and Check Engine Light diagnostics all the way up to full engine replacement and everything in between. Their bays can accommodate any size of vehicle up through light duty (1 ton) pick-ups, and they work on both foreign and domestic vehicles. Lance Griffin started his automotive journey at a Chevron station in Oak Grove back in 1979, when he was still just a kid in high school. He was a quick study, though, and it wasn’t long before he started working in service departments and moving up the ladder. Over the years, his skills and exemplary work ethic earned him a burgeoning list of regular clientele. When the opportunity arose for Lance to set out on his own in 1996, he grabbed the bull by the horns.

14 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • MARCH 2021

Initially, the business was run out of a Chevron station where he leased the adjacent space, but as things built up, that location could no longer accommodate it. In 2004, he found the perfect location on Boones Ferry Road here in Wilsonville, and has been there ever since. With the added square footage the new facility provided, Lance was able to expand even more. He now has 7 full service bays at his disposal, plus top-of-the-line equipment, and the most advanced diagnostic tools in the business. What sets Lance’s apart from the competition? Being a modest guy, Lance credits his fantastic staff with their abundance of skill and experience. Lance himself has the wisdom gained from almost 30 years in the industry. His Managing Service Advisor, Carrie Jackson, has 21 years in the industry, and his Lead Master Technician, Carlos Alvarez, has 11 years. 4 out of his 5 techs are ASE certified, meaning that they really know what they are doing! The shop has also earned 3 important certifications that are the mark of high distinction in the industry: they are a certified NAPA Auto Care Center, a AAA approved service center, and they are certified with the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence. These certifications require rigorous training, and each technician must be tested every 5 years to maintain their certifications. So not only are they educated at the highest level, but that education is constantly being updated and retested to ensure they are on the cutting edge of the industry. Even if you set all of the fancy certifications aside, when it comes down to it, Lance is simply the kind of guy you want to do business with. He was born and raised and has lived his whole life here in the Portland Metro Area. He loves Oregon, and especially the local community he serves, making sure to stay involved with local charities and sponsoring school sports teams. His mission for the business is to treat every customer like family, and he sincerely strives to do that every day. If you haven’t yet experienced the top-notch service they provide here, be sure to come in the next time your vehicle needs maintenance. Choose Lance’s Superior Auto Service - there’s nobody who will take better care of you or your car. Lance’s Superior Auto Service is located at 30775 SW Boones Ferry Rd, Suite D in Wilsonville. Visit lancessuperiorauto.com or call 503-682-8522 for more information.

BUILDING BUSINESS - BUILDING COMMUNITY The Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce has adopted the following Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. If you are interested in learning more please go to www.WeAreWilsonville.org/opporunity. You will be able to see which area businesses have signed on to CODIE to do their part. Also if you personally as a Wilsonville resident or as a member of a Wilsonville business would like to learn more about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, you can sign up to take free DEI online self-paced training classes. (A big thank you to the Wilsonville Community Opportunity Grant who provide the funding so we can offer this training for free)

WILSONVILLE AREA CHAMBER CODIE STATEMENT (Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity)

The Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce (WACC) is committed to creating and promoting economic vitality for business in the South Metro Region. To accomplish this, WACC strives to make a Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (CODIE) a priority for our Chamber and our Region’s Business Community. WACC is committed to promoting business opportunities for all regardless of race, color, national origin, immigration or refugee status, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, mental, emotional, and/ or physical ability, age, or economic status. Collectively, we can contribute to the health and well-being of our business community, its work force, and the Wilsonville Community our members serve. As part of our Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity, we stand united against racism and bigotry. Together, we commit to investing in substantive change in our organizations and communities to address racial inequities and social injustice. We believe everyone has the right to earn a living with equal access and opportunity and to share in our regional economic prosperity. To propel this group effort forward, we have identified the following actions as our responsibility in leading equitable changes which will uplift the individuals in our community who have been left vulnerable by historic and systemic barriers. • We will educate ourselves and disseminate the history of systemic racism in Oregon and the barriers it enables to the present day. • We will create opportunities to listen to those affected and marginalized by these barriers to learn how we can help. • We will support, lift, collaborate with, and encourage funding nonprofits which serve marginalized communities. • We will use our influence and position to amplify unheard voices and endorse policies that lead to racial justice. • We will improve the access, employment, training, advancement, support, and success of people of color in our workforces. • We will continue the conversation by engaging with the South Metro business community to collectively address the issues of racism, oppression, and bias in our organizations and communities.

Change is possible and we are capable, but it is going to take all of us. We listen. We act. We do better.

Divine Complexions

Premiere Luxury & Beauty By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos By Carly Carpenter

A

fter going through a tremendously stressful time (or year), it’s important to take a moment to rest, reset, and find some balance. These are the things that allow us to continue facing life’s challenges with a healthy outlook, and I’m sure we have more challenges still to come. What better way to regain some balance in your life than with an amazing day of rejuvenation at the area’s premiere luxury beauty Medspa? Divine Complexions is the realization of a life-long dream for Christine Lewy. Christine became enamored with make-up and beauty when she was a little girl, and in high school and college that love continued to grow as she got into professional modeling. While encouraged by her family to pursue other avenues, her passion could not be denied. She had already built a solid foundation in make-up while modeling, but expanded her skills further by going into esthetics (which deals with the beautification of the skin through treatments such as facials, superficial chemical peels, body treatments, and waxing). In particular, she perfected her eyebrow waxing skills by working at Anastasia Beverly Hills, one of the most well-known waxing boutiques in California that caters to a celebrity clientele. She garnered such high praise for her expertise that she was hired to teach her methods at the renowned Paul Mitchell beauty schools. Fueled by her undying passion, Christine kept working toward the dream of having her own business, and in 2014 her determination was realized and Divine Complexions was born. There is an old adage that states: “From humble beginnings come great things,” and that could not be more appropriate to describe what Christine has accomplished. Initially, the business was run out of her house in Oregon City. She literally brought customers into her home and walked them up the stairs to the “spa” (aka guest bedroom). She heated her towels in a crock pot because she hadn’t yet built enough of a client base to afford the expensive equipment that the high end salons used. 22 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • MARCH 2021

She also happened to be 8 months pregnant with her second child when she began! Christine has 5 boys now, and she’s managed to continue building this burgeoning business all while meeting the demands of being a wife and mother to 5 energetic young males. Her example of what can be achieved through vision and determination is an inspiration to anyone who has a dream and a desire. She’s a model in both the literal and figurative sense!

Women may take more initiative when it comes to caring for themselves, but if we’re honest we could all use some esthetic treatment from time to time. As we age, our pores can start looking like potholes and our eyebrows (and ears!) become wild hedgerows! So gents, just know that it’s ok to stash that machismo away for a day and give Christine a call. Your lady may even thank you for it! Now that they are established in their new space, Divine Complexions offers the full range of spa services: waxing (including precision eyebrow waxing), facials and peels, make-up (including both application and/or lessons on application), hair styling, YUMI lash lifting, and medspa services (including Botox, dermal fillers, and medical grade facial treatments).

The first 3 years were spent slowly building a clientele and fine tuning her services. In 2017 Christine and her family moved to Wilsonville and she opened her first brick and mortar location in a small shared office space, which gave her the opportunity to buy some equipment and expand her operation. Since then, she has moved to several locations around Wilsonville, expanding into larger and larger spaces as her business grew. Most recently, Divine Complexions has moved to its newest location in Argyle Square. This is the dream come to fruition, the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and patience. By taking everything one step at a time, and building a reputation for consistently providing the absolute best service to her clients, Christine has accomplished all that she set out to achieve! Though she was apprehensive at first about making such a drastic change during the difficulties of the pandemic, Christine knew this was her big chance to take the next step and provide the type of care and service to her customers that she had always envisioned. With help from her father and husband, the space was transformed in a mere 2 months into a light, airy, and luxurious spa getaway that you can truly lose yourself in. At home she may be surrounded by testosterone, but this is her feminine space: glamorous, opulent, and luxurious, giving her the balance she needs. Divine Complexions services are not limited to those for women, however, and she doesn’t in any way want to discourage male clientele. After all, who says that men don’t need to be pampered too?

Due to her expertise and ongoing success in the industry, Christine has now been chosen as the Lead West Coast Make-up Artist for the Glo Skin Beauty line. She is a consummate professional when it comes to all things beauty, and her entire staff is made up of friendly and highly-trained professionals who are ready to help bring out your natural beauty. Christine is so appreciative of the support she has gotten from the community and wants nothing more than to reciprocate that love! She is highly involved in local events and partners with Divine Threads to help disadvantaged women in need, as well as the Clackamas County Women’s Shelter. She truly wants to give back as much as she receives. Divine Complexions is the American Dream come to life. These are the stories that make us proud, and Christine and her team are the kind of people we want to support. The fact that doing so makes you feel and look amazing is just an added bonus!

Divine Complexions is now located at 25700 SW Argyle Avenue in Wilsonville. Visit their website at divinecomplexions.com for more information, and call or text 503-757-8280 to make an appointment. For a limited time, refer a friend or family member and get 20% off a spa service, or $50 off a medspa service!

The importance of cleansing your skin By Beauty Expert Christine Lewy

W

hen someone comes to me with a skin concern such as breakouts, dull skin that lacks glow, or even fine lines and wrinkles, the first question I ask is this: “How often are you cleansing your skin and what are you using?” When it comes to having beautiful skin, the absolute most important thing to start with is your cleanser. How often should you cleanse your skin? Everyone, including children, should cleanse their face twice a day, morning and night, no exceptions. Cleansing a third time after working out is always a good idea too. Cleansing at night might be obvious. Maybe you’ve worn makeup throughout the day, but even if you haven’t, cleansing your skin at night is important because throughout the day particles called free radicals land on your skin and cause your skin to age faster. Your pores also excrete oil and you’d be surprised how many times you touch your face throughout the day. Think about all those germs and bacteria sitting on your pores! Gross! While you are sleeping is when your skin regenerates the most, and it needs a clean surface to do that best. It’s been noted that you age seven times faster if you go to bed without cleansing your skin. Putting on your skin care products at night is also important so those rejuvenating ingredients are readily available for your skin cells to utilize. Sometimes you’ll need to cleanse twice at night; for example, if you’ve had a day of heavy make up wearing. Reach for the essential cleansing oil from GloSkinBeauty to break down the oils and make up as a great first step, then use your traditional skin cleanser to remove the makeup.

Cleansing your skin in the morning is also just as important. While you sleep your pores excrete toxins and you should wash those off before you start the day. Jumping in the shower and letting water run over your face is not enough. You need to use a skin cleanser that properly cleans your skin without stripping it or changing the skin’s natural pH.

Not all cleansers are created equal. Here are some of my favorites: For oily skin, use Epionce Lytic Gel Skin cleanser. It’s a multiple award winner. Have delicate or dry skin? Try the Gentle Foaming Cleanser from Epionce. Want anti-aging in a face wash? Consider adding the Phyto-Active Cream Cleanser from GloSkinBeauty. Have a child who is just learning how to wash their face? Mustela Cleansing Wipes are an easy and affordable option for kids to learn to cleanse their face and begin the routine. There are also some ingredients you should avoid in a face wash, so be on the lookout for cleansers that contain parabens, phthalates, SLS, and formaldehyde, to name a few. Whatever your skin concern may be, consider starting back at square one with washing your face and using the right products. Getting into the routine of cleansing your skin in the morning and at night will set you up for success in achieving that complexion you’ve always wanted!

WHY ON EARTH DO WE HAVE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME? by Jenna Preston, Active Media Contributing Writer

M

ost of us dread that fated day when we have to set the clock forward and wake up an hour earlier the following morning. It can be a miserable and disorienting experience for many people, often resulting in a feeling of fatigue and lethargy for a week or two after the change is made. So why in the name of all that is holy did we begin this seemingly crazy practice in the first place? In looking for someone to blame for our suffering every year, many point the finger at our famous Founding Father from Pennsylvania, Benjamin Franklin. Though the practice was not even implemented until the 20th century, Franklin is credited with suggesting the idea all the way back in 1784. His method, however, would not have involved changing the clocks. In a letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris, entitled “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light,” Franklin suggested that Parisians could make more efficient use of natural daylight (and thereby economize their use of candles) by simply getting out of bed earlier in the morning. It is commonly believed, though, that this was actually written as a satirical essay, and it was not intended as a legitimate suggestion. So while Franklin often suffers the aspersions of many weary souls the morning after, perhaps our ire should be directed elsewhere. New Zealand Scientist George Vernon Hudson would be a more accurate target for our drowsy curses. In 1895 he proposed the idea of a 2-hour shift each spring and fall as a way to preserve more daylight in the summertime. Reportedly, there was some interest in the idea, but it was not adopted at the time. Only a decade later, another suggestion for such a change was made on the other side of the world. In 1905 British builder William Willet suggested setting the clock ahead 20 minutes on each Sunday in April and reversing the process on each Sunday in September. With the time change occurring in small amounts that could be easily adjusted to, this would perhaps have been a more palatable method for most people, but undoubtedly would have resulted in widespread confusion as well. There was enough interest in this idea, though, that a 26 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • MARCH 2021

bill on the matter was drafted in the House of Commons in 1908 and nearly became law in 1909, but was defeated due to heavy opposition from many, especially farmers. Willet died in 1915, never to realize that the same year his proposal was being discussed in the House of Commons, a small town in Canada had already adopted a similar practice. On July 1st of 1908, residents of Port Arthur, Ontario (which is now known as Thunder Bay) set their clocks forward by one hour, starting the world’s first official Daylight Savings Time period. Other cities in Canada soon followed suit, and by 1916 it was so popular that it essentially became standard practice. Germany and Austria were the first countries to implement DST on a national scale starting in April of 1916, in the midst of World War I. Their reasoning was that it would minimize the use of artificial lighting and help conserve fuel for the war effort. That same year the United Kingdom, France, and many other countries followed suit and the practice rapidly gained popularity. Whether you love DST or absolutely loathe it, civilizations throughout history have been known to engage in similar practices. Ancient Roman water clocks, for example, used different scales for different seasons so their daily schedules would adjust with solar fluctuations. Though our current method has only been around for the last century or so, it is now used in over 70 countries and affects over a billion people each year. So on March 14th when the alarm goes off an hour earlier than usual and you’re tempted to lash out at any of the people listed here, take solace in the fact that you have plenty of company that feels the same. *info from timeanddate.com and The Franklin Institute, fi.edu

Building Trust In Community By Dennis McNabb,

Active Media Contributing Writer

Jaimy and Sherine have spent years building trust in the community, cementing their reputation, and consistently pushing forward with cutting-edge technology and inventive tactics to provide the best opportunities for their clients. They think outside the box, which is imperative when it comes to making successful transactions, especially in today’s market. They have the experience, they have the tools, and perhaps most importantly, they hold high esteem in the industry, allowing them to effectively work with other agencies throughout the process. In speaking with Jaimy and his Director of Sales, Mike Rohrig, the discussion centered around many of the various tools they have at their disposal to assist their clients. Many people are afraid to sell right now, Jaimy says, because houses are selling so quickly that clients are insecure about their chances of finding a new home before closing on their Mike Rohrig current one. Nobody wants to get stuck without a place to live! Understandable, of course, and yet this is where the Beltran team really shines - they have the solutions!

Sherine Beltran

T

he real estate market in Oregon has seen record breaking numbers over the last 6 consecutive months. It’s a seller’s market, and over these past months, the marked inventory deficit has consistently brought sellers multiple over-asking-price offers and quick turnaround times. On the opposite side of that coin, low interest rates have simultaneously kept buyers interested in forging ahead (even in a seller’s market). Last month, we discussed with our friends Jaimy and Sherine what types of tactics they’ve been using to help sellers garner additional time at closing in order to provide a longer window in which to locate new properties. By utilizing every tool at their disposal, like Rent-Back (which is an agreement written into the contract between buyers and sellers, allowing the seller extra time to live in their home after closing, essentially renting their own house back from the new buyers) and Contingencies For Sellers, the Beltran team have yet again proven why they are the premiere real estate agency in the area. 30 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • MARCH 2021

Recently, Jaimy had a couple he was working with who were apprehensive about selling for this very reason. There were also some aesthetic issues around their house (exterior paint, landscaping, interior trim) that needed to be addressed. Although they had the desire to make the repairs, they did not have the skillset, and consequently weren’t sure where to even begin, so they entrusted Jaimy with their concerns. He immediately connected them with various contractors (people the Beltran team trust and work with on a regular basis) who made the repairs efficiently and price-effectively. Jaimy got it on the market, secured multiple offers, sold it and negotiated rent-back so the seller had plenty of time to find a new home before closing. The seller couldn’t have been more pleased with the entire transaction! Another example was that of a couple seeking a very specific property. They wanted an urban farm-type setting with acreage and a pasture for horses, but not too remote. These types of properties are rare to come by and the would-be buyers were reluctant to sell their current home for fear they wouldn’t find what they were looking for. When the ideal property suddenly

Jaimy Beltran and unexpectedly popped up on Jaimy’s radar, he was able to jump on it immediately, connecting with the client and submitting the winning offer on their behalf. Everything seemed perfect, until a cash offer came in from another buyer which forced Jaimy’s client into a 2-day time crunch to secure their buyer’s contingency. They hadn’t even started the process of getting the client’s current property ready for sale! It was only their perseverance, depth of knowledge, experience, and willingness to think outside the box that kept them in the game. Mike actually ran out to the client’s house that day to take photos with his phone (normally they use much more professional quality photos for their posts). His quick action got the house on the market right away, allowing them to secure multiple offers within those 2 days, satisfy the contingency, and still negotiate rent-back to give the client a little breathing room.

Ethan Frelly, another member of the Beltran team, had a similar example with a client he’s been working with for several years now. He helped put them into their last home which they have happily lived in for the past several years. About a year ago, they contacted Ethan to say they were ready to upgrade to something a little bigger, but they could only do so on a contingency. Although the Beltran team has been employing contingencies on many of their transactions, it is nevertheless much more difficult to Ethan Frelly do so when there is such a dearth of inventory. Houses are selling in mere days with full cash offers, and the competition is stiff! That said, because the couple was so impressed with Ethan and the Beltran team after their previous experience, they entrusted them with their latest transaction and decided to put their current house on the market (forgoing the contingency). They got multiple offers, negotiated 60 days for closing and an additional 60 days in rentback, which provided the client with plenty of time to then turn around and find their dream house without those additional restrictions.

Why are these examples so noteworthy? Because they illustrate the lengths that Jaimy and the entire Beltran team go to in order to make things work for their clients best interests. Clients are like family to them. They’re not in it just to sell your house, but to help make your dreams come true. They’re there to educate and support you, and to help you make the best possible choices for your future. They’re dedicated to working with you to make informed decisions so you can have the absolute best buying and/or selling experience, even in unprecedented times like these. The Beltran Properties Group at eXp Realty has the tools, the knowledge, and the reputation in the industry to put you in the best possible position to make your dreams a reality. If you are considering selling or buying a home, contact them today!
