THE HISTORY OF SANTA CLAUS

The Magical Legend of Santa Claus 1600 years in the making

s the holiday season rolls around, Santa Claus assumes center stage. But where exactly did this rotund, jovial old man in a red suit originate, and how did he become the iconic symbol of Christmas that he is today? In truth, the history of Santa Claus is a fascinating tale that intertwines folklore, legends, and a sprinkle of entrepreneurial ingenuity. Santa Claus, as we know him today, traces his roots back to a number of historical figures, each contributing to the contemporary version we know and love. Perhaps the earliest inspiration for Santa Claus was Saint Nicholas, a Christian bishop of the 4th century, renowned for his acts of kindness and gift-giving. In time, Saint Nicholas became the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants, archers and brewers, among others. In the British Isles, a character known as Father Christmas emerged during the mid-17th century and was frequently depicted as a bearded man garbed in green, symbolizing the spirit of the season. By the 18th century, however, the concepts of Father Christmas and Saint Nicholas merged, resulting in a hybrid figure that blended elements from both traditions. The American version of Santa Claus began to take shape in the 18th century. Influenced by Dutch and German settlers, the name “Santa Claus” evolved from the Dutch term “Sinterklaas.” During this period, “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”), a poem published in 1823, played a pivotal role in shaping the modern image of Santa. This poem described Santa

as a rotund gift-giver in a red suit who utilized chimneys rather than the front door for his Christmas visits. The poem, attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, established not only Santa’s magical nighttime journey around the world delivering toys to children, but specified his vehicle of choice as a sleigh powered by eight reindeer with specific names and attributes. Also introduced in the poem was the idea of Santa monitoring children on his “naughty and nice” list and filling stockings accordingly. The classic image of Santa Claus in a red suit with a white beard was tweaked further in the 1930s due to a marketing campaign by Coca-Cola. The company’s advertisements depicted Santa as plump, rosy-cheeked, and garbed in a red and white outfit and hat. Although Santa had been portrayed in robes of other colors prior to this marketing campaign, CocaCola’s version of Santa Claus was embraced by the popular imagination and remains the image we associate with him to this day. As the holidays roll around, and images of Santa Claus abound, know that, like so many things in life, Santa has evolved from his ancient origins as Saint Nicholas and Father Christmas, to the iconic figure of Christmas cheer crafted by an imaginative poet and creative corporate advertising. One thing is for certain, whether you’re a child or an adult, the holidays would not be the same without Santa, his reindeer and the spirit of the season that he represents to so many around the world!

Meet Jerry Johnson Coca-Cola syrup tech makes life sweet

hen we choose our favorite consumer products from the shelf in a supermarket and put them in our shopping cart, it’s doubtful we’ve ever wondered exactly how it’s produced or who made it. It’s also doubtful we’ve spent any time wondering who’s running the company or who invented the product in the first place. We just take for granted that the soft drink we’ve always loved will be there and will always taste the same. Well, meet Jerry Johnson. He’s been working at the Wilsonville Coca-Cola bottling plant for the Pacific Northwest, now known as Swire Coca Cola, for the past 25 years, as a Syrup Technician in the Quality Assurance Department, making up that “magical” syrup every morning that turns ingredients into the Coke we expect to drink, all the while making certain this international brand meets its required standards of excellence. He’s one of those people in our town who “make things go.” Jerry was born in West Virginia and raised in Wabash, Indiana. His parents divorced when he was only four and his stepdad, who was a machinist, helped his stay-at-home mom raise him along with his older sister and younger brother. When asked if there was anyone along the way that inspired him to excel and be motivated to go to college, he credits his math teacher in high

school for helping him tap his hidden potential to delve into physics and advanced mathematics. Enrolled at Indiana State University, he found pleasure in the rituals of studying and attending class, and confesses, “Even now, I would go to school every day if I could.” He worked as a machinist during the summer to earn money for tuition and books and joined the Air Force ROTC with hopes of becoming a jet pilot, but after discovering he had a color vision issue and was unable to distinguish between different shades of color, he was disqualified from getting an Air Force ROTC pilot scholarship. Realizing these ambitions were no longer possible, he added industrial and business classes to his schedule to make himself more marketable while applying to Boeing for work in the hope of moving west. Jerry had always dreamed of seeing the Rockies and the Pacific Ocean, so when a friend landed a job at Evergreen Aviation in McMinnville, they packed up the car and headed to Oregon. In 1989, Jerry settled into an apartment in Wilsonville and got an installation job at a glass company. He then applied at the Coca-Cola facility for a temporary position in the Quality Assurance department and began pulling bottles off the line and testing them. In 1998, he began making the “magic” syrup himself. In 2011, his wife, Colleen, was hired at Coca-Cola as a Lab Technician, and since they were both working night shifts, they kept bumping into one another. Initially, they’d go have coffee after work and didn’t realize they were actually dating until suddenly they did. Her family lives in Corvallis, and today, Jerry and Colleen are proud parents of a young son, Jeremiah. They also now work the day shift and share their parenting roles. Since Jeremiah is now in school, Jerry, who goes in early, picks his son up from school, does the grocery shopping, and prepares dinner. Like many couples today, they share the load of making things go, both at work and at home. Along with his daily duties making the syrup, Jerry also serves on the Safety Committee at Swire, doing daily readings, monitoring meters and making certain the company’s usage of water, gas and electricity is responsible. In his off time, Jerry still loves to be outdoors, and looks forward to weekends when he can take his young son camping and fishing. His relaxed, amicable manner and willingness to adapt to life is something to admire. As Jerry so aptly put it, “You plan. And if it doesn’t work out, you just go another way.”

But where did coffee come from in the first place, and just how did it become one of the most popular beverages around the world? While no one can definitively pinpoint precisely when coffee was invented, nor the name of the first person to roast coffee beans, grind them, and mix them with water, historians agree that coffee originated in the areas of modern-day Ethiopia and Yemen. Legend tells of a 9th century goat herder named Kaldi, who noticed that his goats, after eating coffee berries, became so energetic that they barely slept all night. Kaldi reported his discovery to the abbot of a local monastery who brewed a drink with the berries which increased alertness for the monks through their long hours of evening prayers. Brazil’s famous coffee owes its start to Francisco de Melo Palheta, who was dispatched by the governor of Brazil to help mediate a conflict between neighboring French and Dutch Guiana. Arriving in Cayenne, the capital city of French Guiana, part of Palheta’s mission was to smuggle some coffee plants which were closely guarded by the French. As the story goes, a romantic dalliance between Palheta and the wife of the Governor of Cayenne led to her passing a bouquet to a Brazilian officer containing a coffee seedling concealed among the flowers. This seedling was supposedly the progenitor of Brazil’s coffee industry. Whether the romantic part of the story is true or not, it is documented that Palheta was successful in bringing thousands of coffee seeds and several plants back to Brazil. Gabriel de Clieu By the 18th century, coffee had grown to be one of the world’s most profitable commodities. Consumption and popularity in the U.S. grew, particularly during the Civil War, and enterprising businessmen such as brothers John and Charles Arbuckle grew wealthy selling pre-roasted coffee by the pound to cowboys in the West. James Folger, who peddled coffee to gold miners in California, also profited greatly. Big name coffee brands including Maxwell House and Hills Brothers quickly followed suit. Following World War II, instant coffee was developed, simplifying the coffee-making process, though not necessarily improving the flavor. With the emergence of Starbucks in Seattle in 1971, the quality of coffee available to the consumer improved through better sourcing and preparation techniques. Consistent, quality coffee became available to people across America, with beverages tailored specifically to the palate of each individual customer. Today, the coffee revolution has evolved. Small, independently owned coffee shops are taking it to

the next level. A focus on sustainability, local roasting, and fair trade beans are at the forefront of the new movement. Sourcing, roasting techniques, and brewing methods are all aspects of the equation that today’s coffee entrepreneurs are relentlessly improving in their drive to bring the highest quality coffee to market. uring the month of September, a team of eight Rotarians (three from the Rotary Club of Wilsonville) traveled to the city of La Plata Huila, Colombia, South America, to help with service projects and participate in cultural exchange. The eight-day trip took place from September 20–27. Participating were Pat Wolfram, Jaimy Beltran and Lauretta MacColman of the Rotary Club of Wilsonville; Doug Cain, Karen Hall, Stephen Phillips and Rachelle Phillips of the Newberg Early Bird Rotary Club; and Renee Brouse of Rotary Club of Sherwood and district governor for Rotary District 5100. Wolfram is currently serving as an assistant district governor, and also chairs the Wilsonville club’s Community Service Committee. On December 7, the Wilsonville Rotarians who traveled to Colombia will be speakers at that week’s luncheon program, and share what they learned on their trip. The meeting begins at 11:45 a.m. at Black Bear Diner, 30175 S.W. Parkway Ave., Wilsonville. Visitors are welcome. Lunch can be ordered from the menu.

The Oregon delegation to Colombia arrived after a 4,100-mile journey bearing special gifts for the La Plata Rotarians — seven signed Portland Timbers jerseys, including five team members who are Colombian (Dairon Asprilla, Diego Chara, Yimi Chara, Juan Mosqueara and Santiago Moreno). “The jerseys were a big hit — they loved them,” Wolfram said. During their time in Colombia, the visiting Rotarians helped the La Plata Rotarians repair and upgrade the town square for the city of more than 61,000 people. “It was a great community gathering,” said Wolfram. “There were dozens of people working side-by-side… It looks so nice now. The town really uses that space, now more safely.” Other service projects over the last decade have included water filters to provide clean drinking water, Rotary parks, ultrasounds for medical care, fire department safety equipment, computers for schools, and sanitary units for families. “We were able to provide 50 turnout coats to the local fire department,” Brouse said. “This increased the safety of the firefighters who did not have a single turnout coat. Instead, they would dunk themselves in the onsite pool before heading to the fire.”

Rotary clubs are known for creating projects to improve sanitation in clubs served by their international partner clubs, and this partnership has been no exception to the rule. “Our two biggest projects by far are the installations of sanitary units to the villages,” Brouse said. “[This saved] hundreds of people from unsanitary conditions and for some, provided their first opportunity for running water and bathroom and shower facilities in their homes.” The Wilsonville (new to the committee), Sherwood and Newberg Early Bird clubs comprise a Joint International Service Committee for the ongoing purpose of performing international service projects, in Colombia and elsewhere. One of the Wilsonville members, Beltran, is Colombian-American and has been to the country before, just not with Rotary. In future years, the partnership should continue to flourish. The clubs hope to fund and complete a service project at the La Plata community center for youths and adults with special needs. They are also pursuing projects that could enhance vocational opportunities and economic growth.

Winterize Your Home 10 TIPS ON PREPPING FOR WINTER WEATHER By Dennis McNabb, Staff Writer

homeowners, most of us understand that with significant changes in the weather, we are wise to make certain preparations in order to keep our homes running at peak efficiency. Here in the Northwest, we don’t typically experience the same extreme shifts in temperature that some other parts of the country do, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help to stabilize our energy bills with a few key actions. This is especially true if we own older homes. So, as temperatures drop, here are some winterization tips courtesy of our friends at Beltran Properties Group at eXp Realty.

1. Seal drafts and vents: Check all of your exterior doors and

windows for drafts. Any gaps or cracks should be sealed with weather stripping or caulking to prevent cold air from entering. If you have vents around your foundation, close them off with styrofoam (or close the flaps if they are affixed) to keep all of that cold air from circulating through your crawlspace. or insufficient insulation. It’s well worth the investment, however, if you plan to stay in the home long term. Some older homes may even require new insulation in the walls!

3. Have your heating system regularly serviced: Every winter, you should schedule a

professional inspection of your heating system. Filters should be cleaned or replaced as needed and the system should be in good working order before the cold hits. Once winter has arrived, it’s much more difficult to get it scheduled!

5. Protect your pipes: This is a big one, particularly for those

who have experienced frozen pipes that have burst. Insulate all exposed pipes, disconnect garden hoses, and install bib covers. In extreme cold, you can open the cabinets under your sink (to allow warmer air from inside your home to circulate). Some people also keep the faucets dripping so the water is in constant motion.

6. Perform roof maintenance: This may not seem as obvious, but damaged and/or missing shingles can cause heat loss and leaks. Leaks, of course, can open you up to a whole slew of other problems. Make sure to regularly inspect your roof for any damage, and repair or replace shingles as necessary. 7. Have your chimney inspected: If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home, it can provide a wonderfully warm and cozy ambience in addition to assistance with your heating bill. That said, if it’s not in proper working order, it can also prove to be inefficient and even hazardous. Make sure it is regularly inspected, cleaned, and maintained. 8. Keep your gutters clean: Clogged gutters and downspouts

can cause pooling of water against your foundation and in extreme situations, ice dams. The purpose of gutters is to keep water (and all the damage that it can cause) flowing away from your home. Make sure to keep them clean and free of debris so they can do their job. Clogged gutters also get heavy and can cause undue stress on your roof.

9. Keep your windows covered: All windows, even energy-

efficient ones, let in cold air. All you have to do is walk up next to one to witness this. Using heavy curtains and/or thermal

blinds can help immensely by providing an added layer of insulation. Even just keeping them closed at night can help keep the warmth in.

10. Purchase an emergency kit: Although slightly unique when considered against the other 9 tips, this final suggestion is no less important. When winter storms hit, having an emergency kit can make all the difference. You can buy a kit or make your own. Just be sure it includes these essential items: flashlight, batteries, blankets, non-perishable foods, water, and any regular medications your family requires.
