Chimcare Chimney Service

Chimcare strives to be the leader in the chimney and fireplace industry. They are committed to providing customers with the highest quality service at affordable pricing, and are known throughout the Northwest for professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. In 1989, Richard Peralta began a small chimney sweeping company in Canby, Oregon in order to help support his growing family. Richard started the business on a part-time basis to provide extra income for his family of eight, while working full time for UPS. After five years of hard work and dedication to his customers, he was able to leave his day job and pursue the business full time. Richard built the business from the ground up by providing dependable, quality service that is still trusted to this day. Thanks to his incredible dedication to the craft, integrity, and impeccable customer care, Richard’s business quickly grew into the chimney repair and cleaning company that carries on his legacy today. Many of Richard’s first customers are still with Chimcare LLC today, along with their family and friends. Chimcare is very proud that the majority of their business is from loyal repeat customers and their referrals. As they have grown, Chimcare has expanded with additional locations in order to service the greater Portland and Seattle areas. Their chimney professionals can service homes and businesses as far north as Everett, Washington and as far south as Salem.

Along with providing chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair services, the great team at Chimcare can also help transform your outdoor living space by constructing a beautiful outdoor fireplace for you to enjoy all year round. They are experts at chimney construction and masonry, and their work is so good that they have also branched out to doing special projects like patios, retaining walls, fire pits, walkways, and pretty much anything that can be done with brick and mortar. In 2005 Richard’s son Jesse took over the business. Richard now dedicates his time to community outreach projects that he is passionate about. Jesse remains committed to not only keeping up with the level of service that their father provided for many years, but working to exceed it. They want to go above and beyond for each and every customer. Along with the current customer base, Jesse is working hard to expand Chimcare as his father had always dreamed. They are always looking to serve new customers who are searching for clean-cut service technicians with experience, quality workmanship, and a name that is trusted around the northwest. They are proud to carry on the Peralta family tradition of providing exemplary chimney care for you and your home. If you have any questions or want to inquire about their services, you can visit their website at https://www.chimcare.com, or call them at (800) 362-4840.

SEASONAL

By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

Close Encounters (1977): PG Directed by Steven Spielberg, legendary sci-fi author Ray Bradbury said this was the greatest movie ever made. Probably the alien movie that begat all others, it’s more of a drama meets conspiracy thriller, focused on the mystery and fear than the science or the aliens themselves. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, and François Truffaut, this is classic alien cinema that holds up after 45 years. Okay for older kids.

Alien (1979): R From Ridley Scott, the alien popping from the chest is what we remember, as do countless satirical versions of this scene. This is probably one of the earliest scifi horror films and was terrifying when released. Starring the legendary Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kott. Older teens or adults only.

E.T. (1982): PG Yet another Spielberg hit, this movie holds up at 40 years old. Young Elliot accidentally discovers an alien in the woods (as one does) and brings it home to live in his closet, feeding it Reese’s Pieces and slowly befriending it. Enter the government in hazmat suits who quickly want to dissect cute little E.T. It’s tense and exciting, thought-provoking, cute, and surprising. And with an adorably cute 6-year-old Drew Barrymore. Good for older kids to watch with their parents.

Independence Day (1996): R A close second favorite of mine, it’s quintessential alien sci-fi and a must-see summer blockbuster. It’s quippy, bombastic, scientific, and extremely satisfying in the sense of “they’re coming, let’s fire up the jets.” Starring Will Smith, Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Margaret Colin. Late teens and adults only. 6 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Mars Attacks!| (1996): PG-13 I watched this far too young, but it’s hilarious and my favorite alien movie nonetheless. From the twisted mind of Tim Burton, malevolent Martians invade Earth and its star-studded cast of characters, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Jack Nicholson, Michael J. Fox, Pierce Brosnan, Natalie Portman, Glenn Close, Jack Black, Danny DeVito, and more. There’s ray guns, explosions, and jokes galore. Pretty much a light-R, so better for older teens and adults.

Signs (2002): PG-13 In the heyday of M. Night Shyamalan, this is a movie of classic suspense done in the same vein of Jaws, where not seeing the monster is what’s terrifying. It’s slow and quiet and incredibly written. Starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Caulkin, and Abigail Breslin. For scares and language, this is solidly 13+.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): PG-13 Known for its incredible 70s soundtrack and probably the funnest alien movie there is, it’s a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s funny, explosive, polished, and full of characters you love to root for. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker and more. Bad language and violence, better for late teens and adults.

A Quiet Place (2018): PG-13 The talk of 2018 and a source of endless satire, it’s actually an alien movie (if you’ve never seen it) and probably the best and most inventive of the last decade. It’s pure suspense, building on the senses, and quite terrifying. Starring John Krasinksi (Jim from the Office), his wife Emily Blunt, and many more, this is a must see scary alien movie. Better for late teens and adults.

Bella Tu Café & Pizzeria

The Art of Lingering

C

By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer • Photos by Craig Brubaker OVID-19 has taken its toll on all of us; and not only physically, but it’s also had a significant impact on our emotional welfare. We are social creatures after all, and isolation has been linked to a whole host of ailments. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we cannot take for granted the time spent gathering with friends and family. As we emerge from under the shadow of this crisis to a sunny summer, we must learn anew how to celebrate our humanity. And fortunately for us, Tualatin has the ideal new venue for just such an activity: Bella Tu Café & Pizzeria. Owners, Christina and Peter Monk, have worked tirelessly to establish an environment inclusive to all; a place where everyone should feel welcome to come down, and re-introduce themselves to the “art of lingering.” Christina takes great pride in her French heritage, and it’s their extensive travel throughout Europe which has informed Bella Tu’s inviting aesthetic, as much as their outstanding cuisine and their morethan-reasonable prices. They have endeavored to become, like so many of the haunts they frequented during their travels, the quintessential neighborhood gathering spot. Christina and Peter both come from lengthy tenures in Corporate America, but it is Bella Pizza, and especially Bella Tu, which is the realization of a lifelong dream. Their shared passion for great hospitality and fantastic food was only hindered by opportunity.

8 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

When they discovered that Bella Pizza in Portland was up for sale, they recognized that this was their chance. Established in 2001, Bella Pizza was exactly the kind of neighborhood restaurant they’d envisioned: exquisite food prepared fresh daily from scratch, served in an authentic and welcoming space. They purchased Bella Pizza in March of 2020…only days before COVID-19 began to shut everything down. They possessed a winning formula though, and with that they managed to persevere. Astutely, they understood not to change what wasn’t broken. Still, they wished to build upon what was already established; expand on the brand, and create something from the ground up which was their own. And so, while Peter continued to run Bella Pizza on NE Alberta in Portland, in January 2022 Christina opened Bella Tu Café & Pizzeria in Tualatin, the manifestation of their broader vision. And it’s a certified WomanOwned business! Bella Tu (French for “beautiful you”) is everything you could ever hope for in a neighborhood restaurant. Like the European cafés it’s modeled after, the cuisine served is simple, fresh, locally-sourced, organic whenever possible, and always minimally processed. Using time-tested

family recipes, you will leave feeling wonderfully sated, light and energized, rather than heavy or sluggish. Almost everything is made from scratch daily. Dough is made every morning, and hand-tossed after going through a cold fermentation process for at least 48 hours. The result is a dough that is uniquely crisp and chewy, absolutely delicious, and much easier to digest! Sauces, dressings, meatballs, and even croutons, are also all made by hand in-house. Everything, down to the smallest detail, has been given the utmost care and consideration. Even for the few ingredients/dishes which they don’t prepare themselves, they’ve carefully partnered with likeminded artisans to ensure the highest quality standards. The pizza is, of course, outstanding. Local favorites include: Bella’s Famous Vegan Pie, Mr. Big Stuff, and Walter White, but don’t be fooled into thinking they are some kind of one-trick pony. Their calzones are also extremely popular (very traditional/authentic!), as are their variety of salads. Their Hood River Harvest and Caesar salads are particularly well-loved, especially as we head into the summer months. Looking to wet your whistle with something a little special? With the same care and attention they’ve given to every other aspect of the business, Christina and Peter have crafted some of the finest cocktails around. Their Limoncello Margaritas and Pimm’s Cup cocktails have people lining up out the door! Of course, they also have a wide selection of small-vineyard, organic European wines, and 16 taps loaded with fantastic, unique, and sometimes exclusive local brews, to keep all of you beer-lovers happy. And don’t forget, in the morning hours they also serve as a café! Bella Tu is the cutest little European-style café this side

of the Atlantic! Get your caffeine on with some delicious Illy coffee, or savor a fresh-baked pastry from partner La Provence. Support a local business! Bella Tu is a labor of love brought to life by the meticulous care and passion of local residents, Christina and Peter Monk. This is a true familyowned and operated business. Stop by, and chances are you’ll see their kids, Madeleine, Danny, and Lauren helping out between classes or after school. Their entire staff consists of talented and dedicated individuals who ensure that guests are greeted warmly with a smile, and every dish is prepared to perfection. Christina and Peter strongly believe that “Team Bella” is the foundation of their success, and they extend their support to the local community by donating and fundraising to help local school teams and organizations whenever possible. If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor and come down to Bella Tu Café & Pizzeria today. And stick around for a while. Lingering is encouraged! Bella Tu Café & Pizzeria is located at 8294 SW Nyberg St. in Tualatin. Check out the menu at their website, bellapizzatu.com, or give them a ring at (503) 885-3181. Their sister location, Bella Pizza, is located at 2934 NE Alberta Street in Portland. Check out the menu at their website, bellapizzapdx.com, or give them a ring at (503) 282-0600.

TUALATIN VFW POST #3452

HOPE & HEALING By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

E

stablished in 1914, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Auxiliary set out to serve the veterans of this country and our communities in honor of the sacrifices and commitment of every man and woman who has served in uniform. We have unwavering support for uncommon heroes. Before the beginning of World War II, twenty three overseas veterans gathered on August 31, 1940. Before the evening was over, they had elected officers and decided on the name Axel Rasmussen VFW. Major Rasmussen, brother of charter member R. W. Rasmussen, was a member of the U.S. Army First Division and was decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross by the United States and Croix de Guerre by the Government of France. He was killed on May 4, 1918 in France. Major Axel Rasmussen Post 3452 was officially charted on October 25, 1940. The first vote of the Post was to form a Ladies Auxiliary. Twenty three ladies proceeded to organize and have been active ever since. The Post first held their meetings at Winona Grange while the ladies met at the Old Fellows Hall. Over the years, the Tualatin VFW Post has welcomed veterans from Tigard, Lake Oswego, and other areas. The original Post met in its own building at 8455 SW Seneca and has since moved to 18820 SW Boones Ferry Road in Tualatin. The post building was the major social center for the Tualatin Community in the 50s and 60s, with weekend dances open to the community. Tualatin had fewer than 1,000 people until 1974! Post 3452 started Tualatin’s Annual Crawfish Festival in 1951. At that time, the river had an abundance of critters. As a fundraiser, by the members and Women’s Auxiliary, the crawfish were cooked and sold to the festival attendees during the first four years in order to raise $4000 to build its first post building on Seneca Street. The festival is now coordinated by the Tualatin Chamber of Commerce.

12 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

These days Post 3452 continues to support the local community through various fundraising efforts, like the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. Each year, more than 4,000 high school students grades 9-12 from across the country enter the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. The first-place winner from each state advances to national judging and competes for national awards totaling $33,000 in scholarships. Other community support efforts include their annual November partnership with Burger King® franchise restaurants to raise funds in support of the VFW’s Unmet Needs program. Now in its 15th year, the annual campaign encourages Burger King® customers to donate $1 or more to the program with their purchase.

HISTORY

The History of Powell’s Books

A Literary Legacy By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

I

f you’ve ever spent an afternoon strolling the seemingly eventually acquired a loan for $3,000 to assume a lease on endless aisles at Powell’s City of Books on Burnside, it’s a Chicago bookstore that dealt in used books. Two months later, Michael paid back his loan and was turning a profit likely that the immensity of the store and its massive on his new venture. inventory has left you a bit In the summer of 1971, Michael’s awestruck. It’s not everyday one father, Walter, came out from Portland encounters a three-story bookstore to manage his son’s store while he that encompasses an entire city was on vacation. Like Michael, his block. One of the largest new and father also developed a passion for used bookstores in the world, with bookselling, and when Walter returned an inventory of approximately one to Portland he decided to open his million books, Powell’s is one of own bookstore with 100 boxes of Portland’s cultural treasures. used books purchased at a rummage In today’s fast-paced digital sale. With a diverse background world of online retailing, where Walter and Michael Powell in the early days that included work as a painter, browsing for books is typically wallpapering contractor, newspaper reporter, and a teacher done on the screen of a laptop or mobile phone, one can’t of industrial arts, Walter brought an unorthodox approach help but marvel at the ability of Powell’s to endure as the to the bookselling business which ran counter to traditional brick-and-mortar bookstore supreme. Yet, like many methods. At his store at Southwest 12th and Burnside, the great achievements, Powell’s Books emerged from humble elder Powell had decided to sell both used and new books origins and grew in phases over many decades. together, contrary to the standard practice of bookstores It all started in 1970 when Michael Powell, a graduate either selling one or the other—used or new—and certainly student with a bachelor’s degree in political science from not jumbling them together on the same shelves. Initially, the University of Chicago, started a bookstore in the Michael wasn’t certain what to make of his father’s unique Windy City. As an Oregonian with experience working as approach. “In the used book world,” Michael explained, a commercial fisherman, Michael lacked experience as a bookseller. He was encouraged, however, by professors and “Mixing paperbacks and hardbacks was not so much of a stretch, but when my dad had the idea of bringing new books friends, including the famous novelist Saul Bellow, and

too, I had no sympathy.” Walter’s unorthodox approach, however, combined with the fact that Powell’s was open 365 days a year, staffed by passionate and knowledgeable employees, and fashioned for book lovers, created a synergy that propelled the store to success. Reflecting on the success of Powell’s Books, Michael stated in the August 23, 1981 edition of The Oregonian, that his father’s unorthodox approach worked because it was a benefit to both the bookseller and the customer. From the bookseller’s end of the equation, used books were more profitable than new ones since the profit margin (in the late 1970s and ’80s) was 50 to 60 percent on used books, versus around 40 percent on new ones. Michael explained that the customer was likely to buy a used copy, and “bless you for the bargain.” With business booming, Walter decided to move the store across the street to a larger space. The new space (the present location), previously occupied by a car dealership, expanded the square footage of the store from 24,000 to 30,000. He also convinced Michael to return to Portland and join him in operating the store. By 1982, Walter had sold the store to Michael, though he remained involved in managing the store till he passed away in 1985. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, Powell’s continued to grow at a tremendous rate, becoming one of the largest bookstores in America. This period of time saw the addition of the Anne Hughes Coffee House where customers could relax and peruse books from the store, as well as new Powell’s locations in Pioneer

Courthouse Square (Powell’s Travel Store), Powell’s Books for Cooks and Gardeners on S.E. Hawthorne, and a Technical Publications Annex near the main store on Burnside. Powell’s also expanded into the suburbs with a store in Beaverton at Cascade Plaza. In 1999, Powell’s completed construction of a $3.5 million four-story tower on its main store, increasing total retail space to 68,000 square feet. The ’90s also saw the introduction of computerization to the store, and unionization by the employees who voted to join the ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union). By the 2000s, Powell’s was also selling books online through their website, as large competitors such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble had transformed the bookselling experience with the ease of online shopping and delivery. Today, Emily Powell, Michael’s daughter, is president and owner of Powell’s Books—Michael retired in 2010, though he still works in the warehouse processing used books—and Patrick Bassett, a business consultant from Eugene, operates as CEO. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, political unrest, and labor issues that have hit Portland hard, Powell’s Books has managed to survive. Of the sprawling book empire that once spread across Portland, Powell’s now consists of its flagship store on Burnside, a sizable location at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton, and a store on Hawthorne Boulevard in Southeast Portland. In a recent article in Publisher’s Weekly, Emily stressed that many of the most critical challenges Current President & Owner, Emily Powell facing Powell’s are technology driven. The company has recently hired a new head of technology to manage its large IT department in an effort to raise their online functionality to a level sufficient to effectively meet the needs/expectations of the book-buying public, a daunting task when competing against the likes of Amazon and others. As the world changes at breakneck speed, the city of Portland along with it, just remember there are many wonderful things that have endured. For more than 50 years we have been fortunate to have the largest independent bookstore in the world in our very backyard. We can only hope that future generations will enjoy another five decades of the literary bounty that Powell’s offers. Visit CommunityAdvantageMagazines.com 27
