Treat to Eat and a Treat to Keep! That’s how Carla Mayes, owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes, so aptly describes her business. If you haven’t had a chance to visit her store yet, do yourself a favor and get there soon. I promise this is going to be your new favorite dessert place! Not only do they serve a plethora of different cake flavors and sizes, but they also have a fairly extensive collection of gift items, which truly makes this a one-stop shopping mecca for all things party related. There’s quite a story behind this amazing business and their unbelievable cakes. In 1997 two women, Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz came together over their mutual love of baking and started making things for friends and family. Their desserts were so delectable and in such high demand, however, that it soon became evident they were onto something unique. There was a shortage, they discovered, of delicious cakes that were readily available, where ingredients were never compromised. Their product proved to be irresistible and now, 23 years later, they have over 300 store locations across the country! chain. Stepping into the Beaverton store, you’d swear it was a simple mom and pop type of place (albeit one with the highest of standards and the most impeccable of tastes). The atmosphere is clean but cozy, colorful but elegant, and welcoming but professional. And the cakes! So many options, and each one is to die for. You get to choose from ten different delicious Bundt flavors, including Red Velvet, White Chocolate Raspberry, Pecan Praline, and their rotating Seasonal Featured Flavor. All of their cakes are made from the finest ingredients and crowned with their signature cream cheese frosting, made with real butter. Having sampled many of their flavors, I can honestly attest that each one is simply amazing!
Good news, too, for those with certain dietary restrictions, like Celiac - they always carry one flavor that’s gluten free. It just so happens to be so delicious and fantastically moist that you’d never know it wasn’t one of their standard recipes. Additionally, all cakes can be ordered with extra frosting or no frosting, so there are also options for customers who are lactoseintolerant. Depending on your occasion, they have all kinds of sizes and designs to choose from. You can go big with their 10” cake (which can also be tiered for extra grandiosity) or small with their individual Bundtinis (the size of a small cupcake) and anything in between. They can customize and personalize for any occasion; birthdays, weddings, graduations - they do them all. There are more than sixty unique designs themed around holidays and celebrations throughout the year, so the sky’s the limit! The group has been rocking and rolling in the Pacific Northwest since the late seventies, but they travel all over performing nationwide, from coast to coast. Jerry Hoffman, one of the 3 original founding members still in the group, is one of the friendliest guys you could ever meet. He also represents the core of what the band and show is all about - fantastic people, who are simply having a blast doing something they all love. Believe it or not, the whole thing actually started out as a gag! Back in ‘78, when Jerry and some friends were working at Washington

n Spanish, the word “Choza” means a hut, specifically a beach hut or cabana. The owners of Choza Tacos Y Cantina at Bridgeport Village have made an effort to imbue this delightful restaurant with exactly that type of atmosphere - relaxed and carefree. You can almost feel the grit of sand beneath your feet and the smell of the salty sea air wafting through the door. Joe Rapport is one of the owners of Choza, and he’s someone who is simultaneously driven and passionate about his profession, while also completely down-to-earth. Joe says that their purpose with this restaurant was to recreate your favorite little Mexican beach restaurant and cantina right here at home, but with the added benefit of having an elevated gourmet menu. The space is open and airy, with colorful and elegant decor, and short of finding a way to bring a hot and dry climate to the Pacific Northwest, they’ve nailed every aspect of the experience. Fernando is what Joe has dubbed the “bar master,” and with good reason. At Choza, both the salsa and the chips are made fresh daily, and they are truly fantastic! The chips are crisp and warm and you can really taste the sweetness of the corn. The salsa is delicious too, and perfectly balanced - not too sweet, not too spicy.
Now, onto the appetizers and entrées. Again, many of the dishes are made from authentic recipes, and that means they are always fresh and always incredible. The mole sauce is actually Jorge’s grandmother’s recipe - that’s how authentic it is! They have a huge array of traditional mexican dishes, of course, running the gamut from quesadillas and tacos to enchiladas and chile relleno. The burritos and tacos are two of their biggest sellers, and it’s no wonder. They are unbelievably delicious and a great bargain, especially the burritos, due to their generous portions. The Street Style Quesadillas are one of the most unique and delicious dishes I’ve ever had at a mexican restaurant. They’re quesadillas like
you’ve never tasted, as they’re enveloped in corn masa turnovers instead of standard flour tortillas, and the flavors are truly remarkable! If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, they have a fantastic selection of appetizers and salads. Also, many of their items are gluten free so for any Celiac sufferers, there are a lot of options to choose from here, and they are even clearly identified on the menu. There are so many incredible options to choose from that it would take far too long to describe them all, so you’ll just have to go in and choose your favorite dish yourself! F
ew business owners know their own product as well as Nick Egoroff does. He opened his first Ace Sewing & Vacuum store in Newberg a little more than ten years ago, but before that he’d spent about a quarter century in the industry as a technician servicing sewing machines and vacuum cleaners, which are frequently sold side-by-side in specialty shops.
Two years ago Nick and his wife Maria opened their second shop here in Tigard, and they have been very pleased and grateful to be welcomed into the community with open arms. The hustle and bustle of the growing area has really helped the new store take off. “We’re extremely busy,” Nick says. “After COVID came along, if there can be a silver lining, it’s the fact that there are more sewers now. That, and people who have had sewing machines sitting in their closets for ten or twenty years, and now they’ve come back. We’ve been extremely busy with sewing machines, it’s hard to keep products in stock.” Ace Sewing & Vacuum carries nearly 50 brands of sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. According to Nick, as both items have become more electronic over the years, brands you might find in box stores or online may be cheaper, but they’re not made to last. time it more than pays for itself and becomes the less expensive machine.” Also, thanks to Nick’s previous experience, they are able to service your machine anytime it needs a repair or a tune up, making sure it stays in fantastic working condition. “We have a full service shop where we go through the machine and clean, oil, service and adjust everything, resetting it back to factory specs, making sure the machine is running absolutely perfectly,” Nick says. “On vacuums, we go through the entire unit, clean and service the brush roll and motor, and put everything back in good working order with parts that are needed.” Ace Sewing & Vacuum encourages annual servicing to resolve issues like snags, puckers, inconsistent tensions, thread or needle breakage, skipped stitches and damage to your fabric. The store’s pledge: “Our factory trained technicians do a thorough top to bottom service to ensure all aspects of the machine are working as good as new, if not better, in some cases.” In normal times they also offer in-store sewing classes, which unfortunately (due to COVID restrictions) are on hold for the time being. However, Ace does stock plenty of fabric for purchase to help keep their customers occupied at home. Their fabric sales are also up more than usual, thanks in part to both new and returning sewers, and the explosion of DIY face masks. “We have all the supplies you need if you’re making masks,” Nick says.
