Easter History: Hares, Eggs, & Candy By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

Easter is about rebirth, renewal, and fertility. This is evident in symbols like the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, which eventually led to chocolate eggs, marshmallow Peeps, and the second best-selling candy holiday in America! Let’s take a quick look at how Easter has changed over the years.

Easter Bunny

According to legend, the Easter bunny first came to 1700s America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Children made outdoor nests so this curious creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the tradition spread across the country, and the fabled hare’s Easter morning goodies would eventually include chocolate, candy, and gifts, while colorful baskets would replace the nests. Much like milk and cookies left out for Santa, children would often leave out carrots in case the Easter bunny got hungry from all his hopping!

Easter Eggs

From a Christian perspective, eggs were handed out during Easter service in early Orthodox churches, with the hard shell representing the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg representing the resurrection. One explanation is that eggs used to be forbidden during Lent, so Christians would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. The origin of dyeing Easter eggs is less clear, beginning anywhere from 13th century Europe or all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It’s rumored the early Christians of Mesopotamia dyed eggs using red to represent the blood shed on the cross. Later, missionaries may have painted biblical scenes on eggs and used them to explain the story of Easter to children. 8

Easter Candy

Fast forward to the 19th century, when European chocolatiers began making chocolate eggs to celebrate Easter. Nowadays, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds, made from chocolate and marshmallow, and supported by an internal steel frame. Another egg-shaped candy is the jelly bean, first popular for Easter back in the 1930s. Over 16 billion jelly beans are made in the U.S. each year for Easter. Over the last decade, the marshmallow Peep has been the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Created in the 1950s, the original Peeps were handmade, yellow marshmallow chicks, and other flavors and shapes were introduced later, including chocolate mousse bunnies! info from history.com

Lemon Blueberry Cake This moist blueberry lemon cake contains three lemon cake layers with blueberries and is frosted with a refreshing whipping cream and cream cheese frosting, which again has blueberries and lemons. INGREDIENTS

CAKE 1 (16.25 ounce) package white cake mix 1 ¼ cups water 3 egg whites 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons lemon extract DIRECTIONS

FROSTING 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened ¾ cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract FILLING 1/3 cup blueberry pie filling

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 8-inch pans. 2. Beat cake mix, water, egg whites, vegetable oil, and lemon extract together in a bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed until batter is well combined, about 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans. 3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. 4. Beat cream in a chilled bowl using an electric mixer until soft peaks are almost forming into stiff peaks; place bowl in refrigerator. 5. Beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract together in a separate bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Fold whipped cream into cream cheese mixture. 6. Place 1 cake on a plate; top with blueberry pie filling. Place second cake atop blueberry filling. Generously frost cake with whipped cream cheese frosting.

Determined to prove herself, Judy leaps at the chance to solve a mysterious case. She’s forced to work with a wily and sneaky fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who makes her job impossible. HPV & Oral Cancer

he human papilloma virus (HPV) is the most common group of viruses affecting the skin and mucosal areas of the body. There are over a 100 different types of HPV that can infect various parts of the body. The most visible forms of the virus produce warts on the hands, feet, arms and legs. These common viral infections are often harmless, noncancerous and easily treated. HPV 16 and HPV 18, two of more dangerous types of HPV, are known to cause a majority of the cervical cancers. HPV 16 is also linked to many cases of oral cancer. While public awareness and aggressive screening has decreased incidence of HPV- associated cervical cancer, the cases of HPVassociated oral cancers continues to rise. Cancers of the mouth were once predominately seen in elderly male patients with a history of tobacco and alcohol use. Although smoking related oral cancers have declined over the past couple of decades, there has been a dramatic increase in HPV-associated oral cancer. The good news, however, is that HPV cancer has higher survival rates, as they are more responsive to chemotherapy and radiation. Oral cancers caused by HPV are generally found at the base of the tongue and the tonsils in non-smoking males between 30-50 years of age. NonHPV oral cancers tend affect elderly male patients on the sides of the tongue, tissues of the cheeks and the floor of the mouth. The HPV is transferred via skin-to-skin contact, and can be sexually transmitted via intercourse or oral sex. When HPV is transmitted from one person to another the virus infects the top layers of the skin and can remain inactive or latent for months, even years before papillomas (warts) appear. For this reason it is vitally important to be screened annually by your dentist for any abnormalities in the head and neck area. Even though cancer is one of the more serious issues in and around your mouth, dentists are screening you for a variety of possible pathologies. Sherwood’s Robin Hood Festival By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

hould you be relaxing in Sherwood in the summertime, don’t be alarmed if you encounter men dressed in tights and medieval garb brandishing bows and arrows. If such is the case, you’re likely in the midst of the town’s annual Robin Hood Festival. The town was originally named Smockville after its founder, James C. Smock, and was renamed Sherwood in 1892 due to general dissatisfaction with its prior name—the consensus being that “Smockville” was not representative of the town, nor befitting its status as a thriving hub in Oregon’s burgeoning new economy. At the suggestion of local businessman, Robert Alexander, the name “Sherwood” was adopted. Alexander was a transplant to the area from Sherwood, Michigan, and maintained that the verdant forests surrounding the town evoked the Sherwood Forest in England of Robin Hood fame.

Following World War II, with the development of Highway 99, Sherwood found itself competing for business with other nearby communities. In an effort to generate publicity for Sherwood, a group of World War II vets saw an opportunity to tie the town’s name with the Robin Hood fever in the air, due to the re-release of the 1938 movie The Adventures of Robin Hood. Dressing up in Robin Hood attire, the vets would make appearances at movie theaters where the film was playing. These costumed characters proved so popular with moviegoers that the theater owners invited them back, and eventually, they came to represent the town of Sherwood in numerous festivals throughout the Portland area. By 1954, the vets had inspired an entire medieval event that became known as the Robin Hood Festival. In 1956, the Chairman of the Robin Hood Festival issued a challenge to

Along with the archery competition, the Robin Hood Festival features a parade highlighted by Maid Marian and her Court—local girls of varying ages who represent Sherwood in community events and festivals throughout the state—and Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Also popular is a Renaissance Village that includes a traditional Knighting Ceremony, and medieval reenactments such as swordplay, magicians, alchemists, and clowns. In addition to the parade and historical entertainment, there is also a Vendor Village with booths for shopping, as well as food and drink galore with a beer/ wine/cider garden featuring selections from local wineries and breweries. And what festival would be complete the people of Nottingham, England for an archery competition, pitting archers from around the Pacific Northwest against their fellow archers in the U.K. A silver tiffany bowl was contributed to the event by the festival association as a prize trophy. The challenge was accepted by the archers of Nottingham, and the popular competition continues annually to this day.
