Chimcare Chimney Service

Chimcare strives to be the leader in the chimney and fireplace industry. They are committed to providing customers with the highest quality service at affordable pricing, and are known throughout the Northwest for professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. In 1989, Richard Peralta began a small chimney sweeping company in Canby, Oregon in order to help support his growing family. Richard started the business on a part-time basis to provide extra income for his family of eight, while working full time for UPS. After five years of hard work and dedication to his customers, he was able to leave his day job and pursue the business full time. Richard built the business from the ground up by providing dependable, quality service that is still trusted to this day. Thanks to his incredible dedication to the craft, integrity, and impeccable customer care, Richard’s business quickly grew into the chimney repair and cleaning company that carries on his legacy today. Many of Richard’s first customers are still with Chimcare LLC today, along with their family and friends. Chimcare is very proud that the majority of their business is from loyal repeat customers and their referrals. As they have grown, Chimcare has expanded with additional locations in order to service the greater Portland and Seattle areas. Their chimney professionals can service homes and businesses as far north as Everett, Washington and as far south as Salem.

Along with providing chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair services, the great team at Chimcare can also help transform your outdoor living space by constructing a beautiful outdoor fireplace for you to enjoy all year round. They are experts at chimney construction and masonry, and their work is so good that they have also branched out to doing special projects like patios, retaining walls, fire pits, walkways, and pretty much anything that can be done with brick and mortar. In 2005 Richard’s son Jesse took over the business. Richard now dedicates his time to community outreach projects that he is passionate about. Jesse remains committed to not only keeping up with the level of service that their father provided for many years, but working to exceed it. They want to go above and beyond for each and every customer. Along with the current customer base, Jesse is working hard to expand Chimcare as his father had always dreamed. They are always looking to serve new customers who are searching for clean-cut service technicians with experience, quality workmanship, and a name that is trusted around the northwest. They are proud to carry on the Peralta family tradition of providing exemplary chimney care for you and your home. If you have any questions or want to inquire about their services, you can visit their website at https://www.chimcare.com, or call them at (800) 362-4840.

HISTORY

UFO Sightings in the PNW

By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

T

here’s a long history of documented UFO sightings in the Pacific Northwest which date back to 1947. Although often discredited as a ‘conspiracy theory’ believed by kookie individuals who enjoy wearing tinfoil hats, there are indeed countless videos and accounts of Unidentified Flying Objects which government and aeronautics experts cannot explain away as weather balloons, swamp gas, or ‘training exercises’. Interestingly, Oregon ranks second in the country for most reported UFO sightings, and Washington ranks third. You’ve heard of the Roswell Incident in 1947. But have you heard of Washington in 1947? Kenneth Arnold, a private pilot, saw 9 “saucer-like aircraft flying in formation” in Washington between Mount Adams and Mount Rainier. He estimated the flying objects traveled around 1,200 miles per hour. Interestingly, in 1947 Chuck Yeager broke the Sound Barrier in his experimental X-1 jet which exceeded 662 miles per hour. I think it’s logical to assume that the object which Arnold witnessed couldn’t have been manufactured on Earth, because its speed was nearly double that of the X-1, which was still a prototype in 1947. Intrigued? Me too! Probably the most famous UFO report in the Pacific Northwest happened in my hometown of McMinnville in 1950. On May 11 near 7:30 PM, farmers Evelyn and Paul Trent witnessed a disc-shaped object hovering in the sky. According to the couple, Paul ran inside the house for

8 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

a camera and took what became the much-debated and historic Trent UFO photographs. The photos were famously printed in Life Magazine and newspapers nationwide, and are considered one of the most famous UFO photos ever. This 1950 sighting eventually led to the creation of the UFO Festival in McMinnville, sone of the country’s largest, held every May to commemorate the sighting. Later in 1959, a police officer named Robert Dickerson was driving in Redmond when he saw a bright, large object descend, abruptly stop, and hover at 200 feet. The nearby treetops glowed because the object was low enough, he said. A Redmond Airport administrator also witnessed the UFO and filed an official report with the FAA. And the unexplained sightings continued as recently as 2004 and 2015, when in 2019 the Navy and Pentagon confirmed videos taken by Navy pilots that showed UFOs, moving at incredible speeds, which could not be explained. Commander David Fravor, a former U.S. Navy Pilot, explained one of the videos was “something I had never seen in my life” and discredited the idea of a weather balloon or explainable object. In 2019, a Navy official said that the Navy does not believe aliens have been flying in US airspace. But if the Navy and Pentagon don’t believe they’re aliens, then how can they be explained? This begs grander questions, such as: Are we alone in the universe? Are aliens friendly? And when will we invent our own flying cars?

Happy Art Ceramic Studio By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos by Carly Carpenter

S

ince their last article back in July 2021, Happy Art Ceramics Studio was getting ready to move from their long-standing Wilsonville location. And as of November 2021, they’ve been loving their new location, located right off 219 & Wynooski in Newberg. The brand new studio, built by Tracy’s husband Jack and son Andy, is located right on her own property near the Willamette River! It’s a little bit smaller, but it’s quaint and offers all the same amenities in a gorgeous rural setting. We all have a creative side. Some of us embrace it and develop it, because we all have a need to create and express ourselves. And if going through a worldwide pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that there is no better time than NOW to do the things we’ve always wanted to. Looking for a new creative outlet, for something fun to do with the kids, for a ladies night out, or an evening with your spouse? Look no further than Happy Art Ceramic Studio! Whether you’re a seasoned painter or a novice, you will enjoy creating something here. It’s the perfect place to relax, socialize, and get your paint on! Owner Tracy Bischoff is a wonderfully warm and welcoming person, not to mention an absolute professional. She has her own kiln on-site and does all her own glazing and firing, so you can rest assured your project will come out perfectly every time. They provide the place, the paint, the tools, the techniques, the kiln, and the glaze. All you have to do is provide a positive attitude and pay for the pottery pieces you choose to paint. It’s that simple! Prices vary on the items, but they literally have hundreds of pieces on the shelves every day. If you prefer to create at home, you can order a To-Go Box: a complete kit with paint, brushes, your chosen ceramic piece, and instructions. Paint at home, at the

Tracy Bischoff park, or wherever you like! Just return it to them to be fired and glazed when you are finished. If you want to create on a regular basis, join the Happy Art Home-Art Club! For only $60/month, you get 4 seasonal ceramic projects (1 each Saturday) to paint at home, plus supplies and directions. Or come to the studio with some friends, co-workers, neighbors, youth group, or mom club. You are welcome to bring in your own snacks and drinks! Walk-ins are welcome, however, their tables & parking are limited, so we suggest calling first to save a table. They currently offer 2 classes, KIDDOS, ages 4-12, Wednesday 4-5:30 PM ($25 each or $80/month for 4 classes, Pre-Registration is required), and ADULTS, all ages, Thursday 11-12:30 PM ($10 each OR $30/month for 4 classes + cost of pottery). They will also be adding summer KIDS classes Wednesday and Friday mornings—stay tuned. Support this great local business and do something fun, relaxing, and creative today! Happy Art Ceramics is located at 7905 NE Dog Ridge Rd in Newberg. For more information, visit happyartceramics.com or call 503-682-3473. And keep up with the goings-on at Happy Art Ceramics Studio on their Facebook page.

For All Your Flag, Flagpole, Banner & Kite Needs!

Elmer’s Flag & Banner was started by Elmer Reider in 1963. A former car salesman, Elmer learned about a new kind of business when his car lot was visited by a man whose trade was decorating dealerships with flags, signs and colorful banners. “The story goes that there was a guy who was coming around doing decorations for the car lot,” explains Dave Anchel, president of Elmer’s. “Elmer asked him if he was making any money and the guy said, ‘Better than you!’” Elmer believed it, so he left auto sales for the car lot decorating business. The store prospered, thanks to his talent for spotting niche business opportunities, like flags and banners, and his commitment to building customer loyalty with quality products and honest service. Today, Elmer’s is Portland’s largest flag, banner and kite store, with 4,000 square feet of products, everything from weathervanes to windsocks. Anchel grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania, where he spent 22 years in the family business, learning how to run a successful small company. In their search for a business to purchase, Anchel and his wife visited Portland and fell in love. “We came to Portland, had some really good chocolate and said to each other, ‘We could live here,’” he recalls. Variety is the spice of life and it’s also what you’ll find at Elmer’s. Anchel estimates the store offers some 8,000 different products, about 1,200 of which are available online. Elmer’s also makes its

own custom flags and banners, by hand and in-house. They make both high-quality, digitally designed flags and banners, and are one of the only companies in the United States that still does appliqué - the time-honored tradition of sewing one piece of fabric onto another - just like Betsy Ross. “We make those by hand, upstairs in our sewing shop, and they look gorgeous,” Anchel explains. “It’s for when people want an heirloom quality flag, like of their family crest, or when a high school wins a championship and wants to hoist a banner to their gymnasium ceiling.” Elmer’s also manufactures, sells, installs and services custom poles, including two of the tallest in the state of Oregon, measuring 120 feet. “They’re monsters,” Anchel says with a laugh. Elmer’s selection of kites, flags, banners, weather vanes, wind spinners and other wind toys will amaze you. Looking to spruce up your home’s exterior? Stop into the retail store at 1332 NE Broadway in Portland, Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Or visit their website, elmersflag.com anytime.

SEASONAL

By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

Close Encounters (1977): PG Directed by Steven Spielberg, legendary sci-fi author Ray Bradbury said this was the greatest movie ever made. Probably the alien movie that begat all others, it’s more of a drama meets conspiracy thriller, focused on the mystery and fear than the science or the aliens themselves. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, and François Truffaut, this is classic alien cinema that holds up after 45 years. Okay for older kids.

Alien (1979): R From Ridley Scott, the alien popping from the chest is what we remember, as do countless satirical versions of this scene. This is probably one of the earliest scifi horror films and was terrifying when released. Starring the legendary Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kott. Older teens or adults only.

E.T. (1982): PG Yet another Spielberg hit, this movie holds up at 40 years old. Young Elliot accidentally discovers an alien in the woods (as one does) and brings it home to live in his closet, feeding it Reese’s Pieces and slowly befriending it. Enter the government in hazmat suits who quickly want to dissect cute little E.T. It’s tense and exciting, thought-provoking, cute, and surprising. And with an adorably cute 6-year-old Drew Barrymore. Good for older kids to watch with their parents.

Independence Day (1996): R A close second favorite of mine, it’s quintessential alien sci-fi and a must-see summer blockbuster. It’s quippy, bombastic, scientific, and extremely satisfying in the sense of “they’re coming, let’s fire up the jets.” Starring Will Smith, Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Margaret Colin. Late teens and adults only. 18 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

Mars Attacks!| (1996): PG-13 I watched this far too young, but it’s hilarious and my favorite alien movie nonetheless. From the twisted mind of Tim Burton, malevolent Martians invade Earth and its star-studded cast of characters, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Jack Nicholson, Michael J. Fox, Pierce Brosnan, Natalie Portman, Glenn Close, Jack Black, Danny DeVito, and more. There’s ray guns, explosions, and jokes galore. Pretty much a light-R, so better for older teens and adults.

Signs (2002): PG-13 In the heyday of M. Night Shyamalan, this is a movie of classic suspense done in the same vein of Jaws, where not seeing the monster is what’s terrifying. It’s slow and quiet and incredibly written. Starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Caulkin, and Abigail Breslin. For scares and language, this is solidly 13+.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): PG-13 Known for its incredible 70s soundtrack and probably the funnest alien movie there is, it’s a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s funny, explosive, polished, and full of characters you love to root for. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker and more. Bad language and violence, better for late teens and adults.

A Quiet Place (2018): PG-13 The talk of 2018 and a source of endless satire, it’s actually an alien movie (if you’ve never seen it) and probably the best and most inventive of the last decade. It’s pure suspense, building on the senses, and quite terrifying. Starring John Krasinksi (Jim from the Office), his wife Emily Blunt, and many more, this is a must see scary alien movie. Better for late teens and adults.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

CABINET CURES

THE CURE FOR THE COMMON CABINET By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer • Photos by Carly Carpenter

or most of us, our kitchens are an integral part of our living space. No longer simply functional, they act as a central hub, a social gathering area for family and friends alike. To some extent, they are a visual representation of our personal aesthetic, and as such they have the strongest capacity to become outdated in appearance. Unfortunately, kitchens are simultaneously one of the most cost-prohibitive rooms to remodel. For a fraction of that cost, however, you can reface and refinish your cabinetry, and transform what was once an ordinary or outdated kitchen (or bathroom) into a fresh and luxurious custom showpiece using Cabinet Cures. Husband and wife team, Kelly and Kelly Koch (pronounced Cook) founded the business out of their garage in 1985. Through hard work and tireless dedication to the highest standards of excellence in both customer service and craft, Cabinet Cures has grown to become quite simply the best in the industry. By using their own state-of-the-art process, they are able to perform unbelievably beautiful kitchen and bathroom “makeovers” without the higher costs and inconveniences associated with complete remodels— although, as an option, they do fabricate new custom cabinets as well. In fact, regarding options, they offer more design, modification, and color choices than any of the competition, and they’re the only ones who offer a guaranteed start date on every job! While for a time they were focused

on expansion and franchise locations could be found across the country, the Kochs have since decided to reign things in and centralize their efforts on their Sherwood headquarters. Their main 20,000 sq. ft. production facility has actually been located in Sherwood since 2008, but it was just in July of 2021 that they opened their gorgeous brand new showroom. And what a sight it is to behold! This is not a retail space, this is a design space, established specifically for you, the customer, so that you can see first-hand exactly what Cabinet Cures can do for you. This is truly a family business! It is locally owned and operated by the Koch family: Kelly and Kelly; their son, Charlie (Head of Production); their daughter Jamie (Design Manager); and Charlie’s wife, Julia (Lead Designer). Their other 23 employees are equally “part of the family,” as are their Sherwood neighbors. This is their home, and they are honored to service the western Portland metro area. Everything is manufactured in-house to your specifications. There is no cookie-cutter piecemeal work done here, and every job is completed one-at-a-time to ensure you get their full attention and support throughout the process. If you are considering updating your kitchen or bathroom, there is only one place you need to call! Cabinet Cures: 1-800-975-2141 (for a free in-home design consultation). You can also check out their website, cabinetcures.com or visit their corporate office and showroom at 16008 SW Tualatin-Sherwood Rd. in Sherwood.

HISTORY

The History of Powell’s Books

A Literary Legacy By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer

I

f you’ve ever spent an afternoon strolling the seemingly eventually acquired a loan for $3,000 to assume a lease on endless aisles at Powell’s City of Books on Burnside, it’s a Chicago bookstore that dealt in used books. Two months later, Michael paid back his loan and was turning a profit likely that the immensity of the store and its massive on his new venture. inventory has left you a bit In the summer of 1971, Michael’s awestruck. It’s not everyday one father, Walter, came out from Portland encounters a three-story bookstore to manage his son’s store while he that encompasses an entire city was on vacation. Like Michael, his block. One of the largest new and father also developed a passion for used bookstores in the world, with bookselling, and when Walter returned an inventory of approximately one to Portland he decided to open his million books, Powell’s is one of own bookstore with 100 boxes of Portland’s cultural treasures. used books purchased at a rummage In today’s fast-paced digital sale. With a diverse background world of online retailing, where Walter and Michael Powell in the early days that included work as a painter, browsing for books is typically wallpapering contractor, newspaper reporter, and a teacher done on the screen of a laptop or mobile phone, one can’t of industrial arts, Walter brought an unorthodox approach help but marvel at the ability of Powell’s to endure as the to the bookselling business which ran counter to traditional brick-and-mortar bookstore supreme. Yet, like many methods. At his store at Southwest 12th and Burnside, the great achievements, Powell’s Books emerged from humble elder Powell had decided to sell both used and new books origins and grew in phases over many decades. together, contrary to the standard practice of bookstores It all started in 1970 when Michael Powell, a graduate either selling one or the other—used or new—and certainly student with a bachelor’s degree in political science from not jumbling them together on the same shelves. Initially, the University of Chicago, started a bookstore in the Michael wasn’t certain what to make of his father’s unique Windy City. As an Oregonian with experience working as approach. “In the used book world,” Michael explained, a commercial fisherman, Michael lacked experience as a bookseller. He was encouraged, however, by professors and “Mixing paperbacks and hardbacks was not so much of a stretch, but when my dad had the idea of bringing new books friends, including the famous novelist Saul Bellow, and

too, I had no sympathy.” Walter’s unorthodox approach, however, combined with the fact that Powell’s was open 365 days a year, staffed by passionate and knowledgeable employees, and fashioned for book lovers, created a synergy that propelled the store to success. Reflecting on the success of Powell’s Books, Michael stated in the August 23, 1981 edition of The Oregonian, that his father’s unorthodox approach worked because it was a benefit to both the bookseller and the customer. From the bookseller’s end of the equation, used books were more profitable than new ones since the profit margin (in the late 1970s and ’80s) was 50 to 60 percent on used books, versus around 40 percent on new ones. Michael explained that the customer was likely to buy a used copy, and “bless you for the bargain.” With business booming, Walter decided to move the store across the street to a larger space. The new space (the present location), previously occupied by a car dealership, expanded the square footage of the store from 24,000 to 30,000. He also convinced Michael to return to Portland and join him in operating the store. By 1982, Walter had sold the store to Michael, though he remained involved in managing the store till he passed away in 1985. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, Powell’s continued to grow at a tremendous rate, becoming one of the largest bookstores in America. This period of time saw the addition of the Anne Hughes Coffee House where customers could relax and peruse books from the store, as well as new Powell’s locations in Pioneer

Courthouse Square (Powell’s Travel Store), Powell’s Books for Cooks and Gardeners on S.E. Hawthorne, and a Technical Publications Annex near the main store on Burnside. Powell’s also expanded into the suburbs with a store in Beaverton at Cascade Plaza. In 1999, Powell’s completed construction of a $3.5 million four-story tower on its main store, increasing total retail space to 68,000 square feet. The ’90s also saw the introduction of computerization to the store, and unionization by the employees who voted to join the ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union). By the 2000s, Powell’s was also selling books online through their website, as large competitors such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble had transformed the bookselling experience with the ease of online shopping and delivery. Today, Emily Powell, Michael’s daughter, is president and owner of Powell’s Books—Michael retired in 2010, though he still works in the warehouse processing used books—and Patrick Bassett, a business consultant from Eugene, operates as CEO. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, political unrest, and labor issues that have hit Portland hard, Powell’s Books has managed to survive. Of the sprawling book empire that once spread across Portland, Powell’s now consists of its flagship store on Burnside, a sizable location at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton, and a store on Hawthorne Boulevard in Southeast Portland. In a recent article in Publisher’s Weekly, Emily stressed that many of the most critical challenges Current President & Owner, Emily Powell facing Powell’s are technology driven. The company has recently hired a new head of technology to manage its large IT department in an effort to raise their online functionality to a level sufficient to effectively meet the needs/expectations of the book-buying public, a daunting task when competing against the likes of Amazon and others. As the world changes at breakneck speed, the city of Portland along with it, just remember there are many wonderful things that have endured. For more than 50 years we have been fortunate to have the largest independent bookstore in the world in our very backyard. We can only hope that future generations will enjoy another five decades of the literary bounty that Powell’s offers. Visit CommunityAdvantageMagazines.com 29
