Candy Hearts:
A History Of A Sweet Treat

N
ecco wafers, candy hearts, Sweethearts, conversation hearts. The candy goes by many names, with silly messages and a chalky consistency. The notorious candy hearts have a strange history that involves a pharmacy and America’s first candy machine. Our story begins in 1847, with a pharmacist named Oliver Chase, who invented a machine to produce lozenges. Back then, apothecary lozenges were popular for sore throats and other illnesses. But 175 years ago, the process to make a lozenge was labor-intensive: pulverizing medicine and sugar paste by hand with a mortar and pestle, kneading dough, then rolling and cutting out little discs. Considered the first candy machine, Oliver invented a lozenge cutter to simplify the process, and smartly shifted from making medicine to making candy, founding Chase and Company, which later became New England Confectionery Company, or Necco! Here’s where the story gets really interesting! Legend tells us that Union soldiers during the Civil War carried Necco wafers, known as “hub wafers,” and Oliver Chase might have been inspired by the love letters
these soldiers carried. Historians suggest instead that Daniel Chase, Oliver’s brother, was inspired by the growing popularity of Esther Howland’s Valentine Day cards which began selling in the mid-1800s. A third and more likely explanation is the oddly named cockle, a popular candy shaped like a scallop seashell which contained a “motto” printed on a thin roll of paper. Daniel cleverly improved upon this design to print the messages directly onto candy, by using a felt roller pad wetted with red vegetable coloring. However, Daniel’s “conversation candies” or “motto lozenges” weren’t heart-shaped until later in 1902. Up until that time, their candy was sold in a simple disc shape, but eventually were sold in shapes like baseballs, watches, and horseshoes. The candy hearts were hugely successful, and over the next 100 years other smaller companies began selling similar candies. In 1990, Necco acquired Stark Candy Company and became the “leading manufacturer in conversation hearts.” Today, the company claims to manufacture nearly 100,000 pounds of Sweethearts every day from midFebruary through January and approximately 8 billion candy hearts each year. But what is a candy heart exactly? Necco offers classic Sweethearts, as well as chocolate, sugar-free, “dazzled,” and “color your own” varieties. According to their website: “Manufacturers combine sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, f lavors, gums and colors into a mixing machine to create a dough, which then goes into a machine that presses it flat, stamps it with sayings and cuts it into hearts. After 30 minutes in a “drying tunnel,” the six different heart flavors are mixed together and packaged.” Surprisingly, they’re not made out of chalk! Daniel Chase’s original printed lozenges were larger and therefore included longer phrases, like “HOW LONG SHALL I HAVE TO WAIT? PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE.” There were also weddingthemed sayings, such as “MARRIED IN WHITE, YOU HAVE CHOSEN RIGHT.” Previous sayings like the timeless “FAX ME” and “GROOVY” have been discontinued. “BE MINE” and “KISS ME” you may be more familiar with. Whatever your feelings on candy hearts, they’re a fun and fascinating little piece of American history.

Sweetheart Cupcakes
With Sturdy Whipped Cream Frosting
Treat your sweetheart and loved ones to these white cupcakes made special by adding festive colors.
INGREDIENTS
1/3 C Vegetable Oil 3 Egg Whites 8 Drops Red Food Coloring 2 Drops Raspberry Candy Oil
CUPCAKES: 1 Package White Cake Mix 1 ¼ C Water
FROSTING: 1 (8 Oz) Package Cream Cheese, Softened ½ C White Sugar
1 t Vanilla Extract ½ t Almond Extract 2 C Heavy Cream
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F. Line a standard muffin tin with paper cupcake liners. 2. Beat the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and egg whites together on low speed for 30 seconds, then on medium for 2 minutes, until smooth. Fill cupcake liners 1/3 full with white batter; set aside. 3. Stir 4 drops of red food coloring into the remaining bowl of batter to make the batter pink. Stir in the raspberry oil. Pour 1/3 of pink batter into a resealable plastic bag and set aside. 4. Mix more food coloring into the remaining bowl of pink batter until it is an orange/red color and pour the batter into a resealable plastic bag. Cut a corner off the bag, stick the open tip into the center of each cup of white batter and squeeze in about two tablespoons of red batter. 5. Cut the corner off the bag with the pink batter, stick the open tip into the center of the red batter and squeeze about 1 tablespoon pink batter into each cup. 6. Bake the layered cupcakes in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool completely before frosting. 7. For the frosting, combine cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract and almond extract in a large mixing bowl, mix until smooth, then slowly pour in the heavy cream. Works of Heart The Erin Hanson Gallery How to Carve The Perfect Pumpkin

anging precariously and horizontally from a sheer face of red sandstone in the Nevada desert, hundreds of feet above the ground, most people would not be contemplating the creation of beautiful oil paintings — or the prospect of advancing the largest progress in the Impressionism art movement since the likes of Monet and Van Gogh. Obviously, artist and entrepreneur Erin Hanson is not most people, and art lovers everywhere are fortunate for that. For it was indeed on the towering peaks of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area that her painting style was consolidated by a single inspiration and force of nature. “I’ve been painting my whole life,” Hanson explains. “But it wasn’t until I moved to Las Vegas and started rock climbing that I really got impassioned and began to develop my own style.” Hanson noticed how the rock landscapes were formed with distinct lines and sheer edges that created almost mosaiclike effects and patterns, endlessly appealing and attractive to the eye. She began to experiment with utilizing this style on other scenes, with crisp, deliberate brushstrokes and a vibrant color palette that combine to form gorgeous masterpieces not unlike collage or stained glass.

“If you look at my work, it’s almost more like a mosaic impression than a traditional landscape,” Hanson explains. “Each one of my brushstrokes is its own little square of color, almost like pointillism but much bigger.” Hanson’s artistic journey doesn’t necessarily suggest she was destined to blaze new ground in the burgeoning school of Open Impressionism. She began painting as a young girl, voraciously learning oils, acrylics, watercolor, pen and ink, pastels, and life drawing from accomplished art instructors. She began commissioning paintings at age 10, and two years later she was employed after school by a mural studio, learning the techniques of acrylics on the grand scale of 40-foot canvases that would go on to grace the interiors of major commercial properties like the Strat Hotel, Casino and SkyPod in Vegas. A high school scholarship took her to Otis College of Art, where she immersed herself in figure drawing. Graduating high school at age sixteen and once again demonstrating that she was a child prodigy, Hanson next attended UC Berkeley, excelling further in her studies, creative development, and attaining a degree in bioengineering. Though her love of art never wavered, she admits she became disillusioned with the belief that she might never earn a good
living from her talents. It wasn’t until immersing herself in the brilliantly colored cliffs of Nevada and Utah, watching the seasons and the light change daily across the desert, that the inspiration became too great to contain. In those beautiful surroundings, Hanson dedicated herself to creating one painting every week for the rest of her life. Her unique, minimalist technique of Open Impressionism — which blends classic impressionism and modern expressionism, with a dash of plein air style, and involves placing impasto paint strokes without layering, began to be emulated by other artists — and Hanson was credited as the pioneer and originator of this contemporary style, which has been described as a modern heir to Van Gogh and Monet. Hanson does not build up the painting layer by layer, as in traditional oil painting, but instead lays her paint strokes side by side without overlapping — working to get each stroke “right the first time.” The clean brush strokes give a mosaic or stained-glass appearance to her paintings, while also conveying a sense of movement and spontaneity. She uses a limited palette of only five pigments to create vivid, unmuddied colors that ignite the imagination. She worked hard to build a following through the art show circuit, attending traveling art shows and festivals on the weekends while working her day job during the week. She’s published three books of her work, developed more than a dozen brochures, published two magazines, and became an expert in the brave new world of online sales in her journey to success. “I’ve tried every single type of art marketing you can do,” she says with a laugh.
The gallery/studio not only showcases Hanson’s full repertoire of bold and vivacious oil paintings, to which she continues to add hundreds of new pieces each year, but also gives visitors a front-row view to the cutting-edge world of a modern artist. Her production facility includes a 3D scanner and massive flatbed printer, which can recreate Hanson’s works with up to 30 layers of paint to preserve the original depth and texture. Visitors are welcome to take a full tour of the facility, which includes a meet-and-greet with the artist herself — who is typically immersed in her latest project. Hanson finds inspiration everywhere. One of her most popular pieces, titled simply “The Path,” is a minimalist interpretation of a stretch of road in Glendale, California, she once traversed daily. But in her version, she ignored the manmade distractions — houses, cars, fire hydrants, etc. — to elevate the area’s natural beauty. “I was able to use the paint and the impressionist style to capture the movement I felt in the landscape,” she says. “I just wanted to capture the beauty of it all. This was an earlier painting where I was really developing my style through trial and error over the years. I painted this one a dozen times before I finally got it right and just went, ‘Bingo!’” Her subjects range from the iconic — Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, Smith Rock, and Cannon Beach’s towering Haystack Rock, to name just a few — to the everyday. “I can see beauty anywhere,” she says, adding with a chuckle: “I paint my front yard all the time.” The Erin Hanson Gallery is located at 1805 NE Colvin Court, a stone’s throw from historic downtown McMinnville, and is an essential stop on your next tour through Oregon’s wine country. The journey ultimately led her to establishing her own galleries and working studios, one in Carmel-by-the-Sea in her native California, and a sparkling new 18,000-square-foot gallery and production facility in McMinnville. “People are kind of surprised when they walk in,” Hanson says of the Mac facility. “They’re expecting this little retail shop, and we are a full production studio as long as a football field in the industrial area of McMinnville.” FEB/MARCH 2022 • LAKE OSWEGO LIFE/STYLE • 17

I had never experienced such a challenging workout that also felt attainable because of the way the instructors coached me through each move, and provided modifications if needed. I also was able to heal injuries from other workouts because of the emphasis on joint safety plus sustainable strength building design. It truly is a workout for life.It feels so good to be working out in person at the studio. Last year really taught us

Resoundingly we’ve heard that this pandemic has created so much isolation and loneliness, and finding our studio has been a true lifesaver. In the new year, we introduced a new piece of equipment to our lineup of props: The Slider. We love the new level of burn it brings to our existing exercises, as well as many new moves. We’re continually innovating at The Bar Method, so the workout keeps your body guessing and progressing. It also happens to be a lot of fun to try new things and feel your muscles in an all new way. The Lake Oswego studio offers classes 7 days a week, with both 45 and 55 minute options, and 4 different class formats - each with a different flavor for lots of variety. Early Entrepreneurs On The Willamette The History of Boones Ferry By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer
H
ave you ever driven on Boones Ferry Road and wondered how this major byway winding from west Portland to south of Woodburn derived its name? You may possibly have heard rumors of this well-traveled road being associated with the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone, but dismissed it as hearsay or the product of a fanciful imagination. If that’s the case, you may be surprised to learn that these rumors are not as far-fetched as they might seem. Boones Ferry Road received its name from Boones Ferry, a ferry which plied the Willamette River from 18471954 in the vicinity of modern Wilsonville. Although Daniel Boone himself was not directly responsible for the construction of Boones Ferry, his great-grandson, Jesse, and his family, established the ferry shortly after arriving in the area in the mid-19th century. Born in Kentucky on November 7, 1796, Boone’s grandson, Alphonso Boone Sr. moved to Jefferson City, Missouri where he worked a trading post that supplied travelers migrating west across the Great Plains. Following the premature death of his wife, Nancy, Alphonso and his children joined a wagon train bound for the Oregon Country. In Kansas their group banded together with the Donner Party, who were also heading west. However, unlike the Boone party which took the Applegate trail for the Northwest, the Donner Party split off towards Wyoming, where they met their infamous snowbound doom in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. 22 • LAKE OSWEGO LIFE/STYLE • FEB/MARCH 2022
By Christmas of 1846, Alphonso and his family had reached Oregon and staked a land claim along the south bank of the Willamette River, between Oregon City and the pre-territorial settlement of Champoeg. In 1848, after approximately a year in Oregon, Alphonso and his two sons, Alphonso Jr. and Jesse, journeyed south to partake in the California gold rush, news of which had swept the nation by storm. While in California, Alphonso Sr. unfortunately succumbed to miner’s disease – a respiratory disorder that damages the lungs – and was buried along the Feather River in Butte County, CA. Until recently, it was believed that both of Alphonso’s sons returned to Oregon. However, local historians have determined that only Jesse made the trip back home. The fate of Alphonso Jr. is uncertain, but it appears he remained in California. In light of this discovery, historians agree that Jesse, upon returning from California, and with the help of his family, undertook construction of both the ferry system and the split-log road connecting Portland and Salem. This road came to be known as Boones Ferry Road, with a route that would eventually span Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, and Marion counties. Judging by this highway’s meandering nature, it is believed that Jesse followed routes established by indigenous tribes who had been traversing the region for centuries.

As the years passed, a community developed along the river’s north bank near the ferry terminal, which came to be known as Boones Landing. In 1880, Boones Landing was renamed Wilsonville in honor of the town’s first postmaster, Charles Wilson. During the 1900s, the ownership of Boones Ferry transferred from Clackamas County to the State of Oregon, which operated the ferry until it was decommissioned in 1954 due to the construction of the Baldock Freeway Bridge and the I-5 freeway. In honor of the now defunct ferry, the bridge was renamed Boone Bridge.

The earliest version of the Boones Ferry consisted of a pair of canoes joined together by a platform, which was powered by oarsmen from the Tualatin Tribe— members of the larger Kalapuya Nation, whose ancestral lands ranged throughout the Willamette Valley. The ferry navigated the Newport Pool stretch of the Willamette River. By the twentieth century, the old canoe-platform ferry had evolved into a cable barge which made up to 300 trips daily. This newer iteration was powered by an onboard motor that propelled it back and forth across the river along steel cables anchored to each shore. This modernized version was capable of transporting up to twelve vehicles at a time. Interestingly, old-timers who lived while the ferry still operated recall that it received a boost in revenue from bootleggers who smuggled moonshine across the river during Oregon’s early years—particularly the Prohibition era. The fact that the ferry operated twenty-four hours a day created the ideal situation for transporting illegal booze under cover of darkness. The Boone family’s operation on the Willamette was indeed a profitable venture. Prior to the advent of automobiles, when transportation through the Willamette Valley was either by foot, horseback, or horse-drawn carts, savvy

owners of river-front property recognized the demand for reliable passage across the region’s numerous waterways. Not surprisingly, the Boones weren’t the only enterprising individuals keen to capitalize on this business opportunity. John Taylor established Taylors Ferry on his property along the Tualatin River—hence, the subsequent construction of Taylors Ferry Road. Meanwhile, another pioneer from Daniel Boone’s Kentucky bloodline, Peter Scholl, also launched a ferry service on the Tualatin, access to which would lead to the development of today’s well-traveled Scholls Ferry Road. Boones Ferry was owned and operated by Jesse until 1872, when he was murdered by a neighbor over a dispute concerning
If you’re wondering what remains today of the old Boones Ferry, Wilsonville’s Boones Ferry Park now resides on the north shore of the Willamette River where the north terminal stood. The Tauchman House, located on the park grounds, was originally home to one of the ferry’s early operators, Emil Tauchman. Across the water on the opposite shore, a marina and boat ramp provide recreational access to the river at the location of the old south terminal. From the southbound lanes of I-5, should you gaze west while crossing the Boone Bridge, the location of the ferry lies approximately 660 yards up river. So the next time you’re stuck in traffic on Boones Ferry Road, take a moment to remember these intrepid pioneers whose names commemorate our region’s storied past. The ferries they established proved instrumental to the economic development of Portland and the Willamette Valley. Indeed, they played a critical role in shaping the layout of the very landscape we live in today.

Based on Jane Austen’s romantic novel published in 1813, there are many film versions of P&P but this is the best one, in my honest opinion, and I’ve seen a lot of them! This is a romance drama starring the electric Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, alongside such brilliant actors as Donald Sutherland and Judi Dench, and many other familiar English faces. What stands out most is the quick wit and ratatat dialog, not just between men and women, but among everyone in high Victorian society in the English countryside. This is a movie of side glances and subtext, wry smiles and melodrama. What really ties this together is a masterly, whimsical score by Dario Marianelli that’s guaranteed to make your heart swell.
Adam Sandler has starred in a curious number of romantic comedies which are surprisingly good, and this is no exception. This movie co-stars the lovely and hilarious Drew Barrymore, who has a rare condition of anterograde (short term) amnesia following a car accident. The comedy and yearning ensue when Henry (Sandler) and Lucy (Barrymore) fall in love over and over, and Henry’s attempts become i ncreasi ng ly more involved and sentimental in an attempt to cause her to remember him. Also starring Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, Blake Clark, and Dan Aykroyd, this movie is as sweet and sappy as it is hilarious and downright absurd.

A wry adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of the Shrew, this film follows a sprawling 90s cast with the likes of beau-hunk Heath Ledger, starlet Julia Stiles, and quick-witted Joseph-Gordon Levitt. The plot, if you’ve never read the play, is a convoluted tangle that is best explained as a series of romantic bets on unlikely love, not dissimilar to a number of plates spinning simultaneously as the audience holds its breath and fights back laughter. But especially, the film involves Heath Ledger trying to “tame the shrew,” or stubborn woman, Julia Stiles. It’s teenage love, rebellion against parents’ wishes, and high school drama, which makes for a fascinating and impossible potpourri of comedy, romance, and drama. And the 90s music ain’t half bad either.
In this teen romantic comedy, shy high school junior Lara Jean has her unsent love letters unknowingly sent out to her crushes by her younger sister. What follows is as equally nerve-wracking as it is adorable and sweet, as she begins down a complex journey of conf licted feelings and love and heartbreak. T h is roma nt ic comedy is startlingly modern, full of sleek text chat bubbles and Gen Z slang, and an incredible insight into what young love looks like in the 21st century. Starring Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, and Janel Parrish, this movie spawned two sequels and a cult-like following.
