Most internet service providers only showcase a single number when advertising their speeds – the download speed. That’s because their upload speeds are often much slower than their download speeds, so they try to hide it. But DirectLink isn’t like most internet providers – their upload speeds are not only openly listed on their website, but are up to 10 times faster than other providers’ upload speeds. That means you can show off your new pup to your heart’s content without worrying about frozen faces or slow load times.

Chimcare Chimney Service
Chimcare strives to be the leader in the chimney and fireplace industry. They are committed to providing customers with the highest quality service at affordable pricing, and are known throughout the Northwest for professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. In 1989, Richard Peralta began a small chimney sweeping company in Canby, Oregon in order to help support his growing family. Richard started the business on a part-time basis to provide extra income for his family of eight, while working full time for UPS. After five years of hard work and dedication to his customers, he was able to leave his day job and pursue the business full time. Richard built the business from the ground up by providing dependable, quality service that is still trusted to this day. Thanks to his incredible dedication to the craft, integrity, and impeccable customer care, Richard’s business quickly grew into the chimney repair and cleaning company that carries on his legacy today. Many of Richard’s first customers are still with Chimcare LLC today, along with their family and friends. Chimcare is very proud that the majority of their business is from loyal repeat customers and their referrals. As they have grown, Chimcare has expanded with additional locations in order to service the greater Portland and Seattle areas. Their chimney professionals can service homes and businesses as far north as Everett, Washington and as far south as Salem.
Along with providing chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair services, the great team at Chimcare can also help transform your outdoor living space by constructing a beautiful outdoor fireplace for you to enjoy all year round. They are experts at chimney construction and masonry, and their work is so good that they have also branched out to doing special projects like patios, retaining walls, fire pits, walkways, and pretty much anything that can be done with brick and mortar. In 2005 Richard’s son Jesse took over the business. Richard now dedicates his time to community outreach projects that he is passionate about. Jesse remains committed to not only keeping up with the level of service that their father provided for many years, but working to exceed it. They want to go above and beyond for each and every customer. Along with the current customer base, Jesse is working hard to expand Chimcare as his father had always dreamed. They are always looking to serve new customers who are searching for clean-cut service technicians with experience, quality workmanship, and a name that is trusted around the northwest. They are proud to carry on the Peralta family tradition of providing exemplary chimney care for you and your home. If you have any questions or want to inquire about their services, you can visit their website at https://www.chimcare.com, or call them at (800) 362-4840.

By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.
Close Encounters (1977): PG Directed by Steven Spielberg, legendary sci-fi author Ray Bradbury said this was the greatest movie ever made. Probably the alien movie that begat all others, it’s more of a drama meets conspiracy thriller, focused on the mystery and fear than the science or the aliens themselves. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, and François Truffaut, this is classic alien cinema that holds up after 45 years. Okay for older kids.
Alien (1979): R From Ridley Scott, the alien popping from the chest is what we remember, as do countless satirical versions of this scene. This is probably one of the earliest scifi horror films and was terrifying when released. Starring the legendary Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kott. Older teens or adults only.
E.T. (1982): PG Yet another Spielberg hit, this movie holds up at 40 years old. Young Elliot accidentally discovers an alien in the woods (as one does) and brings it home to live in his closet, feeding it Reese’s Pieces and slowly befriending it. Enter the government in hazmat suits who quickly want to dissect cute little E.T. It’s tense and exciting, thought-provoking, cute, and surprising. And with an adorably cute 6-year-old Drew Barrymore. Good for older kids to watch with their parents.
Independence Day (1996): R A close second favorite of mine, it’s quintessential alien sci-fi and a must-see summer blockbuster. It’s quippy, bombastic, scientific, and extremely satisfying in the sense of “they’re coming, let’s fire up the jets.” Starring Will Smith, Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Margaret Colin. Late teens and adults only.
Mars Attacks!| (1996): PG-13 I watched this far too young, but it’s hilarious and my favorite alien movie nonetheless. From the twisted mind of Tim Burton, malevolent Martians invade Earth and its star-studded cast of characters, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Jack Nicholson, Michael J. Fox, Pierce Brosnan, Natalie Portman, Glenn Close, Jack Black, Danny DeVito, and more. There’s ray guns, explosions, and jokes galore. Pretty much a light-R, so better for older teens and adults.
Signs (2002): PG-13 In the heyday of M. Night Shyamalan, this is a movie of classic suspense done in the same vein of Jaws, where not seeing the monster is what’s terrifying. It’s slow and quiet and incredibly written. Starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Caulkin, and Abigail Breslin. For scares and language, this is solidly 13+.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): PG-13 Known for its incredible 70s soundtrack and probably the funnest alien movie there is, it’s a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s funny, explosive, polished, and full of characters you love to root for. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker and more. Bad language and violence, better for late teens and adults.
A Quiet Place (2018): PG-13 The talk of 2018 and a source of endless satire, it’s actually an alien movie (if you’ve never seen it) and probably the best and most inventive of the last decade. It’s pure suspense, building on the senses, and quite terrifying. Starring John Krasinksi (Jim from the Office), his wife Emily Blunt, and many more, this is a must see scary alien movie. Better for late teens and adults. Visit CommunityAdvantageMagazines.com 11

COVER FEATURE
Independence Day Celebration LET FREEDOM RING By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer The summer of 2022 is here, and Canby is coming back with a bang! After a quiet two years in which official observances were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canby’s signature Independence Day Celebration will return this year with a parade and the traditional fireworks show at Trost Elementary. The city-sponsored Independence Day event will be held Monday, July 4, at Wait Park, featuring the traditional car show, street fair with food and beverage merchants, arts and craft retailers, a kids zone and Canby Fire District-organized obstacle course, arcade truck, family-friendly beer garden, and live music.
14 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111
The event drew record crowds — an estimated 12,000 attendees — in 2019, and city officials are expecting this year’s edition to attract even more. “After what has been a challenging two years for our community, I can’t think of a better way to bring people back together than at one of our most cherished events,” Mayor Brian Hodson says. “I am sure we will have a record turnout, and I look forward to seeing everyone there.” The day will kick off with the usual charity pancake breakfast at Knight Elementary School from 7 to 11:30 a.m. But the fun really starts at 10 a.m., when the Canby Independence Day parade begins its triumphant return to the streets of downtown. “The parade is awesome,” says Tyler Nizer, Canby’s Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator. “There are so many people who come out and support it, and so many people that love to take part in it every year as well. While this is my first year putting it on as a staff member for the city, it has been an event that has created fond memories in my childhood and I look forward to seeing the memories it creates for my children.” The car show, at Grant Street between 4th and
6th Avenue and at 5th between Grant and Holly, also opens at 10, as does the kids zone on 3rd Avenue near Wait Park, which will feature bounce houses and other fun. The street fair, located on Grant, 3rd and 4th Avenue surrounding Wait Park, will run 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mayor Hodson will give his welcome speech and officially kick off the day’s festivities from the Wait Park gazebo at 11 a.m. Parade awards will be announced from the gazebo stage at noon and the car show awards at the same location at 2 p.m. The gazebo stage will host an exciting variety of live music and entertainers from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m. The arcade truck on Holly Street and fire district obstacle course on Grant between 2nd and 3rd Avenue will both be open from noon to 4 p.m. Face painting at the kids zone will be open from noon to 3 p.m. The family-friendly beer garden on 2nd Avenue will be available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with its own stage for live entertainment. “The street fair, the car show — it’s all coming back,” Tyler says. “And we are so excited to be able to bring this event back in all its glory after the twoyear break. It’s really a community effort to make this happen, and we’re so grateful for all of the people
who are coming back together to help put this on.” At dusk, head over to Trost Elementary School or your favorite viewing location for the return of the city’s beloved aerial fireworks display, sponsored by Canby Fire District and Canby’s Western Display Fireworks. “It’s going to be a great show,” Canby Fire Chief, Jim Davis, says. “Western always does a great job, and we do encourage folks to join in the safe and sane fireworks displays done by licensed professionals. That’s the safest way to enjoy fireworks.” Canby Fire is accepting donations to help ensure the money will be there to pay for next year’s show. Donations can be made in-person at the main headquarters on South Pine Street or online through GoFundMe. Township Road will be closed from Redwood to the pedestrian overpass. Folks looking for a front-row seat can bring blankets and camp chairs to the sidewalk across the street from Trost or on the fields at Baker Prairie Middle School. “It’s exciting,” Chief Davis says. “And people are ready. We are super excited to be back.” For more information about Canby’s Independence Day Celebration and how you can get involved, contact Tyler Nizer at NizerT@CanbyOregon.gov, or visit canbyindependenceday.com for lots of information, registration forms and maps. MEET THE ATHLETE

TOMMY O’NEIL By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
R
unning the final race of his storied high school athletic career, Canby senior Tommy O’Neil made sure it was one that he, his teammates, coaches, and many of the spectators would never forget, winning the 800-meter at the Oregon State Track and Field Championships on May 21 — and smashing a 40-year school record in the process. The 800 has long been the running star’s signature event — he came within milliseconds of breaking the Canby High School record at that distance just last month. And on Saturday, sporting specs and pounding the hallowed turf at Oregon’s legendary Hayward Field, he proved he was one of the best in the state on the sport’s biggest high school stage. Tommy’s time of 1:52.71 toppled a Canby school record that had stood for more than four decades: the 1:53.40 mark set by Mark Corson in 1979. “I knew I had one last chance to make history,” Tommy says. “I was four one-hundreds of a second off the high school record, so I knew I would have to give it a go to get it. I wanted to leave a legacy that would last for years and that was the last piece to end my high school résumé.” It was not a result predicted by those who had seen his disappointing performance in the 1,500-meter race the previous year. Tommy, who ran cross country all four years but only joined the track team his junior year (and played golf in the spring), qualified for states in the event but struggled on the big stage.
“After getting dead last in the 15 for state last year, that lit a fire under me,” Tommy recalls. “I was really upset at myself for getting dead last after putting in a lot of effort. I wanted to show people that wasn’t who I truly was, and I have a lot more to offer.” Tommy’s training over the past year included a lot of work that even his teammates and coaches may not have seen. During the long winter and the offseason, Tommy could be found pounding the pavement of Canby’s familiar streets and sidewalks — especially when it rained, something he felt would help build mental toughness. “I was trying to build that endurance and find that extra grit,” he says. “Running in the rain, getting mentally tough, trying to get to that point where you don’t let anything get in the way. I think that really helped at districts, because it was pouring down the entire time. A lot of the other guys weren’t used to that.” It also helped at states, where — though the weather was perfect — there were other distractions. “Warming up, I definitely felt the nerves,” he says. “I was getting lots of texts from my friends and stuff, and you could hear the roar of the crowd even from inside the practice facility. At Hayward, when the fans get loud, it echoes and it can really rattle you.” Tommy and his coach, Tom Millbrooke, predicted the event would come down to a horse race between him and Parker Waugh, of Barlow, who had a faster personal best in the 800. Their strategy was to hang in the middle of the pack until the bell lap, then swing on the final turn to build momentum — a technique referred to as “slingshotting.” It worked to perfection.

“With 50 meters to go, Parker drew even to my side, and our eyes met for a moment,” Tommy recalls. “And I just put my head down. I knew this was my last chance to make history.” Make history he did, while also redeeming himself from his performance in the 1,500 in 2021, and his disappointing finish in the Oregon Relays, when an accidental trip took him out of the action. “After I got tripped at the Oregon Relays and missed my shot to show the world who I am, I knew I was going to come back stronger than ever and prove to everyone that I have what it takes to become a champion,” he says.
Getting the school record in the 800 meter meant a lot to both him and Millbrooke, as it was previously the only record on the books in which Millbrooke had not coached the athlete who set it. But for Tommy, it was also deeply personal. “I wanted to leave a legacy,” he says. “I felt like I was missing a little something, and I wanted to leave something behind that would always be remembered.” Tommy, who also captained the Canby Cougar cross country team to its first appearance in the OSAA 6A State Championships in 15 years last fall, graduated from Canby High School in May and will continue his athletic career at Gonzaga University.

It’s that same sense of connectedness that keeps Donna’s clients coming back. “My clients become friends and family,” she explains. “We stay in touch long after the closing, and we’re so lucky that almost all of our business is referraldriven. The people are my favorite part of real estate.” In the future, Donna plans to continue bringing her clients the same great service. “It’s very stressful to buy or sell a house, especially if you’re doing both at the same time, as many of our clients are. My emphasis will always be on taking care of my clients.” All in all, Donna says she feels fortunate to do what she does. “Real estate is just a super-cool gig, and I’ve loved every minute of it! It’s been such a blessing to me and my family.”

UFO Sightings in the PNW
HISTORY
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
T
here’s a long history of documented UFO sightings in the Pacific Northwest which date back to 1947. Although often discredited as a ‘conspiracy theory’ believed by kookie individuals who enjoy wearing tinfoil hats, there are indeed countless videos and accounts of Unidentified Flying Objects which government and aeronautics experts cannot explain away as weather balloons, swamp gas, or ‘training exercises’. Interestingly, Oregon ranks second in the country for most reported UFO sightings, and Washington ranks third. You’ve heard of the Roswell Incident in 1947. But have you heard of Washington in 1947? Kenneth Arnold, a private pilot, saw 9 “saucer-like aircraft flying in formation” in Washington between Mount Adams and Mount Rainier. He estimated the flying objects traveled around 1,200 miles per hour. Interestingly, in 1947 Chuck Yeager broke the Sound Barrier in his experimental X-1 jet which exceeded 662 miles per hour. I think it’s logical to assume that the object which Arnold witnessed couldn’t have been manufactured on Earth, because its speed was nearly double that of the X-1, which was still a prototype in 1947. Intrigued? Me too! Probably the most famous UFO report in the Pacific Northwest happened in my hometown of McMinnville in 1950. On May 11 near 7:30 PM, farmers Evelyn and Paul Trent witnessed a disc-shaped object hovering in the sky. According to the couple, Paul ran inside the house for
a camera and took what became the much-debated and historic Trent UFO photographs. The photos were famously printed in Life Magazine and newspapers nationwide, and are considered one of the most famous UFO photos ever. This 1950 sighting eventually led to the creation of the UFO Festival in McMinnville, sone of the country’s largest, held every May to commemorate the sighting. Later in 1959, a police officer named Robert Dickerson was driving in Redmond when he saw a bright, large object descend, abruptly stop, and hover at 200 feet. The nearby treetops glowed because the object was low enough, he said. A Redmond Airport administrator also witnessed the UFO and filed an official report with the FAA. And the unexplained sightings continued as recently as 2004 and 2015, when in 2019 the Navy and Pentagon confirmed videos taken by Navy pilots that showed UFOs, moving at incredible speeds, which could not be explained. Commander David Fravor, a former U.S. Navy Pilot, explained one of the videos was “something I had never seen in my life” and discredited the idea of a weather balloon or explainable object. In 2019, a Navy official said that the Navy does not believe aliens have been flying in US airspace. But if the Navy and Pentagon don’t believe they’re aliens, then how can they be explained? This begs grander questions, such as: Are we alone in the universe? Are aliens friendly? And when will we invent our own flying cars? Visit CommunityAdvantageMagazines.com 31
