Connection Conundrum:
coincidental, so the team asked Jennifer if other neighborhood kids had ever been on her home WiFi network. She said they hosted Michael’s birthday party at the house a few weeks earlier, and that their WiFi password was shared with the kids.
A Local WiFi Mystery
Are you looking at new devices coming into your home this holiday season? With more devices comes more need for bandwidth and WiFi that can handle an abundance of devices streaming, gaming, FaceTiming, and more. Without a robust WiFi system, there may be certain times of the day where devices seem to be slower or less reliable. Maybe your streaming video starts to buffer unexpectedly, or websites take longer to load. It can be incredibly frustrating to deal with WiFi woes and difficult to diagnose the issue to find a fix if gadgets aren’t your thing.
Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction: When the school bus stopped in front of her home to drop Michael off, there were several kids on the bus whose smartphones and tablets auto-connected to Jennifer’s WiFi and clogged up her network. Once that discovery was made, the DirectLink team helped Jennifer change her WiFi password, which prevented prior automatic connections from occurring when the school bus drove by again.
In the decades of troubleshooting connection issues, the DirectLink team has come across some pretty unique situations. That’s exactly what happened to a local parent and DirectLink member (we’ll call her Jennifer). Jennifer noticed that her smartphone and computer both slowed down significantly around the same time each weekday when trying to load apps or download files. Jennifer used her own WiFi router to broadcast her DirectLink Internet connection, but couldn’t figure out why her system was running so slowly. She called in to the DirectLink Tech Support team for some help. Her Internet speed was fast enough for the number of devices in her home and her regular activity on the network. Because Jennifer had her own WiFi equipment, the DirectLink team had to ask her about activities on her network, including when the interruptions occur and what might be going on in and around her home at that time. The team also asked how many devices are on the network, how many people are home, and where the router was placed – all part of the regular troubleshooting process. Finally, after several weeks, the team made a breakthrough. They discovered that her son (we’ll call him Michael), got dropped off from school by the bus at the same time the WiFi acted up. That appeared to be too
Jennifer could have shortened some of the troubleshooting process by utilizing DirectLink’s WiFi Home Networking service with professional-grade WiFi equipment installed by local experts. Plus, all of the equipment’s updates are handled by the talented DirectLink staff, and they can even access the service remotely and look directly at the network activity to troubleshoot any issues right on the spot. Regardless of if you use their equipment or not, the DirectLink team will go the extra mile to make sure your connection is solid.

Letter From The Publisher Welcome to our December 2021 issue of the Canby Community Advantage Magazine. We are super excited to present to you our Holiday Issue, which is jam packed with tons of things to see, do, and buy this holiday season. Here is a quick glimpse of what we have inside this issue: The Clackamas County Fairgrounds is hosting the Winter Fair this year, but unlike last year’s drive through experience, this year you and your family can walk through and enjoy over 200,000 lights and a special Santa’s Village to get you in the holiday spirit. Speaking of holiday spirit, the 20th Annual Light Up The Night event will happen on December 3rd. Starting with a parade through downtown Canby that finishes at Wait Park, with the tree lighting ceremony and photos with Santa afterwards. Did someone say Santa? If you have ever seen any of the stop-motion puppet holiday movies like Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town or Rudolph, make sure you read our story on Rankin/Bass, the company that produced those classic holiday movies we love watching over and over. And since we are talking about movies, you should also check out our Frosty Flicks page with classic holiday movie suggestions. In addition to our great regular features, this issue features the spotlight stories of TMK Creamery, Vitamin Plaza, and Fisher’s Supply. We also showcase the talents of local artist Olivia Harms, the Rhinestone Cowgirl. And our Special “Meat” The Veteran article, sponsored by Ebner’s Custom Meats, features none other than Frank Higashi. And as always, packed throughout this publication are great local deals and specials from some of Canby’s finest restaurants, retail shops, home improvement specialists, and more. Our next issue will be out just in time for Valentine’s Day. Until then, we hope everyone has a happy and safe Holiday Season and Happy New Year. See you in 2022. Sincerely,

TASTE OF THE TOWN
NUEVO VALLARTA
Making All Things Nuevo
By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
T
he next time you’re hankering for fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine, and friendly, accommodating service, look no further than Nuevo Vallarta for your dine-in or takeout needs.
The popular eatery may be located in Canby, but step inside and you’ll swear you had just stepped off a hot street corner in Guadalajara or Monterrey: a casual, comfortable bistro with all the sights, sounds, and smells of a traditional Mexican restaurante. The favorite Canby cornerstone has been recognized for its excellent service, friendly staff, and of course, outstanding cuisine, which is crafted with a modern spin on traditional Mexican recipes and a passion for using only fresh, high quality ingredients. Nuevo Vallarta’s menu is expansive and truly offers something for everyone. Start off your night with a sampling from the restaurant’s extensive appetizer menu — the most challenging aspect of which is trying to pick just one or two. Nuevo’s starters include a variety of nachos — with the show-stopping super nachos, a house specialty, which come piled high with beans, guacamole, sour cream, tomatoes, onions and cheese. Other traditional favorites include Nuevo’s stuffed cheese quesadillas, garnished with sour cream and guacamole, and its signature Vallarta Chicken Taquitos:
12 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
a steamy stack of deep fried flour tortillas filled with tasty chicken, melted cheese and lettuce. Or for the more adventurous, head to the high seas and sample a half or full pound of Shrimp or Scallop Botana, seasoned with a delectable blend of Mexican spices, garlic, mushrooms, and white onions, then served on a bed of lettuce with avocado, tomato, and lime. For the indecisive, you can always fall back on The Grande Bocaditos, Nuevo’s popular sample platter which offers a delicious assortment of their finest appetizers: taquitos rancheros, chicken taquitos, quesadilla and nachos, served with generous helpings of sour cream and guacamole. From there the menu ranges from the ever-popular taco salad —featuring fresh beef or chicken (ground or shredded) on a bed of lettuce, tomato and cheese in a tasty, fried taco bowl — or its selection of other inventive ensaladas, including Fajita Salad, Shrimp Salad, Tijuana Taco Salad, Ranchero Salad, or Mexican Shrimp Caesar Salad, all served on a deep bed of fresh, flavorful romaine. But the meat — pun intended — of the Nuevo Vallarta menu, especially for those seeking a truly authentic Mexican dining experience, should head to their house specialties and mariscos (seafood offerings). There you’ll find such favorites as the Molcajete, a combination of steak and chicken fried with sliced onions, tomatoes and mushrooms in a spicy mexican sauce topped with jack cheese; Camarones a la Diabla, prawns cooked in a flaming, red-hot sauce with onions and mushrooms; and the Canby-famous Steak Vallarta Special, a massive T-bone steak marinated and broiled according to a secret and closely guarded Nuevo recipe.
For the indecisive, the restaurant’s handy combinations menu is an ever-popular fallback, allowing patrons to mix and match their favorites and get a little taste of everything. The restaurant and its staff take customer service seriously and promise to make every visitor — whether they are a newcomer or longtime regular — feel at home, knowing they are important and their patronage is appreciated. It’s no surprise that Nuevo Vallarta is one of the locals’ favorite and No. 1 choice for Mexican cuisine in Canby. Nuevo Vallarta is located at 1385 SE 1st Ave. in the Canby Market Center shopping complex with Fred Meyer. For more information or to place a to-go order, call 503-266-1782 or visit online at nuevovallartacanby.com.

VITAMIN PLAZA
Good Health & Good Sense By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
F
or nearly 35 years, Vitamin Plaza in downtown Canby has been a source of good health and good sense for the community and for the store’s loyal customer base — from the time owner Tom Vandehey founded the location in 1987 until his passing in December of 2020. New owner Stephanie Boyce is looking to continue that legacy of health and wellness. “The motto that Tom always lived by was ‘Good health and good sense are two of life’s greatest blessings,’” Stephanie says. “That’s what I try to live by too, and want to continue on with.” Stephanie worked with Tom at Vitamin Plaza prior to his passing, and when his family decided they did not want to continue with the store, she asked if she could take over. “I knew he had a great foundation,” she explains. “He had so many great products that you can’t get at other retail stores, and a wonderful base of customers that solely relied on him for their health needs. I felt like I owed it to them and to this community to keep Tom’s legacy going.” Tom established Vitamin Plaza after college, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in health, physical education, and recreation. He was also a certified nutritionist and dietary consultant with more than 30 years of industry experience. He built the store’s reputation by offering hard-to-find specialty supplements and a wide array of other health products, including ephedra, diffusers, vitamins, weight loss products, herbs and essential oils.
18 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Stephanie is looking to continue Tom’s legacy with the wisdom and training he left behind, including what she called his “vitamin bibles.” In addition to vitamins, Vitamin Plaza also offers glutenfree foods, workout aids, protein, heavy metal detox products, and immunity boosters.
Stephanie says her two biggest sellers right now are N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), an antioxidant drug used in health care settings to treat acetaminophen poisoning, cough, lung, and other flu conditions; and quercetin, a common dietary supplement and plant-derived flavonoid believed to boost one’s natural immunity. “Right now, with everything going on with COVID-19, the most important things are to stay healthy, keep your immunity up, and just use common sense,” Stephanie says. Vitamin Plaza is located at 121 N. Grant St. in Canby. For more information, call 503-266-4969.

SEASONAL SPECIAL
ANIMAGIC
The Surprising History of Rudolph By Donovan Darling, Active Media Staff Writer
Y
ou’ve probably never heard of Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment, but you’ve certainly seen their abundant and classic Christmas movies. The most popular stop-motion Christmas movies they produced were Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town (1970), The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974), The First Christmas (1975), Rudolph’s Shiny New Year (1976), and Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July (1979). While far from being new, these heartwarming movies continue to charm new generations every holiday season. First known as Videocraft International, Ltd., the company was founded by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass in New York City in 1960. Most of the Rankin / Bass animations, including their “Animagic” stop-motion movies, were produced in Tokyo, Japan. In fact, most of the studio’s animation was outsourced to Japanese companies like MOM Production, Eiken, Toei Animation, Mushi Productions, and Topcraft. Rankin / Bass was one of the first American film studios to outsource low-budget animated television and movies to foreign animation studios. Throughout the 1960s, the Animagic movies were spearheaded by stop-motion animator Tadahito Mochinaga at MOM Production. Rankin / Bass remained successful for many years thanks to their animated holiday specials which aired for American television. In 1964, the company produced a special for NBC and sponsored by General Electric: a stop-motion animated adaptation of Robert L. May’s 1939 story “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” which featured the 1949 song it inspired, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” written by May’s brother-in-law, Johnny Marks. With American actor Burl Ives as Sam the Snowman and narrator, with an original score by Marks himself, Rudolph became one of the most popular and longest-running Christmas specials in television history, airing with NBC until 1972 when it
20 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
moved to CBS. After its last series output, Rankin / Bass shut down its production company on March 4, 1987. The look and style of the films has heavily influenced more modern holiday classics such as Elf (2003), as well as being parodied by Saturday Night Live and South Park. The figurines featured in Rudolph were created by Japanese puppet-maker Ichiro Komuro for the fan favorite stop-motion movie. “These were hand-made. They weren’t toys,” pop culture memorabilia appraiser Simeon Lipman told PBS in 2006. “They had mechanisms to make them move, to make them come almost alive. No mass manufacturer of toys, especially in the 1960s, made things like that. It was made to be on film.” The 6-inch-tall Rudolph and 11-inchtall Santa were made of wood, wire, cloth, and leather, with Rudolph’s nose lighting up and Santa’s beard made from yak hair. Sometime in the 70s, the puppets came to Barbara Adams, a secretary at Rankin / Bass. She used the figurines to decorate her Christmas tree, and let her nieces and nephews play with them like toys. Later, most of the figurines ended up tragically melting in a hot attic, presumably Barbara’s. Her nephew brought the survivors, Santa and Rudolph, to the Antiques Roadshow, where they were valued at $8,000 to $10,000. A toy collector, Keith Kriess, purchased the puppets for an undisclosed amount, but much more than that appraisal. He then spent $4,000 to have them meticulously restored. Before that, Rudolph had lost his nose, and Santa was missing half his yak-hair mustache. Santa and Rudolph were successfully restored, according to Peter Lutrario, who purchased them from Keith for an undisclosed amount. In late 2020, Peter sold them to an anonymous auction bidder, who won them for a whopping $368,000! Although the current whereabouts of the figurines are unknown, we can be sure that Rudolph and Santa are alive and well in their Rankin/Bass stop-motion movies, emblazoning television screens each December all across the world. Magical and heartwarming to this day, these Christmas films pioneered holiday television specials, forever changed the world of animation, and continue to capture our imagination and hearts.

D
o you feel like you ate your way through Thanksgiving? The holiday season leads people to falter with their fitness goals. While a few holiday meals will not ruin your goals, this feeling of failure can lead to fitness and diet procrastinating. The best way to offset a few meals or pounds is to look at your long term goals. Those few days eating holiday meals can be added to your plan, with minimal adjustments. How do you modify your plan? Intermittent fasting, so skip your breakfast. Increase protein to reduce fat storage from carbs and fats. Protein is more filling, which also reduces overeating. If you want to overeat during the holidays, consume more protein, which contains fewer calories than fat (4 per gram vs 9). Studies also suggest that overeating carbs vs. fats may result in less immediate fat gain, especially in lean people. Don’t forget to exercise! Our fitness stagnates during the holidays, but a simple 20-30 minute daily walk is sufficient. The gym is the ideal option, but the best exercise is the exercise you actually do! New Year’s Resolutions: On average, only 12% of people who make a New Year’s Resolution feel like they achieve
it. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have one! The biggest reason people fail to meet their resolution is because it’s too broad. What does “lose weight” mean in terms of actual pounds? The first step in making a change is setting a measurable goal, then building a plan to achieve that goal. Here at Snap Fitness, our goal is to help you make life changes by supporting you throughout the process and keeping you accountable. So how do you start? First, you need to make small attainable goals. When you meet these goals, you’ll see noticeable change that will help motivate you. Make a small change in your diet. If you currently eat unhealthily, then commit to 1 healthy meal per week (or 3 meals if you’re feeling ambitious). Next, add some form of training to your fitness routine. If you work out regularly, try adding 1 hour per week of additional exercise, such as HIIT training. If you’d like help setting up your goals and making changes in your life, please reach out to our amazing staff and we’ll be happy to help you achieve real change.

At the top of a closet Ivy finds an old Santa suit-beautifully made and decades old with a note hidden away in the pocket. TMK CREAMERY
Real Food. Real Farm.
By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
I
f you’ve ever wondered how a passion project can be turned into a viable business, look no further than TMK Creamery in Canby. It all started on the farm! In fact, it started with a 12-year-old Todd Koch being tasked with the purchase and care of a heifer for his 4H class. Once the assignment was completed, the heifer was to be sold, but Todd found he’d developed an attachment to young Jess (the name he’d given the heifer). So instead, he kept her and she ended up being part of the first generation of heifers on the farm. Now, years later, the amazing ice cream and cheeses on offer here are produced by their 9th generation of heifers!
26 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
For Todd, it was never really about starting a business. The entire endeavor was born from his passion and love of the animals. He envisioned a farm where everyone, the animals and the people alike, were all treated like family. Fortunately, those around him felt the same way, so in the 1990s, TMK Creamery was born. For the first 20+ years, they focused exclusively on milk. It was all processed there on the farm and shipped out to retailers. And while they were pleased with the quality of their product and level of success, nobody outside the company could see what they were doing. The way they treated their animals, and the superior product those animals produced, was lost on the public. So in 2017, they took stock and re-evaluated their position and transformed the whole operation into what it is today. Today, TMK Creamery is a first generation dairy farm run by an entire family who consider it an honor and a responsibility to be stewards of the land. Todd and his wife Tessa, his brother Marc, and his sister Shauna all run the busineswith complete transparency. Every process from start to finish is visible to the public.
Instead of milk, they now make cheese and ice cream, but you can see first hand where this real food comes from and how it is made. It’s really all about going back to basics; back to quality food made simply from a known source (their own animals), free from steroids, chemicals, and all those questionable ingredients you don’t recognize. And everyone is welcome to come witness it for themselves! In addition to being a retail outlet store, TMK has turned themselves into a resource available to the entire community. They are there to educate, to inspire, and to advocate for sustainable farming. They are there to show that a small farm can have a worldwide impact through thoughtfully crafted products:
Flavored Cheddar Curds and Cheddar Wedges, Queso Fresco, Fromage Blanc, Gouda Wedges, their famous Miss TMK’s Single Cow Cheese (the only Single Cow cheese in the world!), and a plethora of amazing ice cream flavors— they’ve got it all! TMK Creamery is a locally owned and operated family business and a true Canby gem. They are heavily involved in the community and especially work to help younger generations form a profound connection with and appreciation for agriculture.
difference one family and their farm can make. While you’re learning about agriculture and purchasing goods from their store, don’t forget to stop by their food cart out front! Not only do they serve a variety of fantastic menu items highlighting their dairy products but they also serve beef from their local beef farm! TMK Creamery is located at 27221 S Dryland Rd in Canby. SEASONAL
CLASSIC FILM REVIEW
Frosty Flicks by Donovan Darling, Active Media Staff Writer
Scrooge (1970)
A timeless and musical retelling of Charles Dickens’ novel “A Christmas Carol.” The classic tale features a grouchy miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by several mysterious Christmas ghosts and proceeds on a journey of self-redemption and humility. Starring the prolific and classically trained actor Albert Finney as Scrooge, co-stars include Alec Guiness (Obi-Wan!) as Jacob Marley’s Ghost. Heartwarming and innocent, Scrooge is a great movie to watch by the fire with the whole family. Rated G.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
A cult classic musical and uncanny take on what we consider a Christmas movie, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas features a fantastical stopmotion universe full of whimsy, humor, and heart. After Jack Skellington discovers the cute delights of Christmas Town, he decides to host his own macabre version of Christmas much to the confusion of Halloween Town’s spooky inhabitants. Accompanied by a beautiful score, the vocal performances are stellar, featuring Catherine O’Hara as Sally and Danny Elfman as Jack. Rated PG for scary images and animated violence.
28 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
Home Alone (1990)
By far my favorite Christmas movie, Chris Columbus’ and John Hughes’ Home Alone is a hilarious and heartfelt movie about family and redemption. Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), the youngest child and troublemaker in a large family, always feels forgotten and resented, and that’s even more apparent when he’s left home alone while his family flies to Paris for Christmas. Instead of panicking, Kevin relishes his time alone and becomes more independent, doing his own grocery shopping, laundry, and decorating for Christmas. Eventually he runs into the local cat burglars, Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), who are planning to rob his house. And that’s when the fun and chaos go into high gear. Rated PG for violence and coarse language.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
Chevy Chase stars and steals the show in John Hughes’ hilarious Christmas romp. This is the go-to “what could go wrong at a family holiday?” movie. While Clark (Chevy Chase) is anxiously awaiting his holiday bonus, the Griswalds are hosting the quirky grandparents when the long-lost country cousins show up broke in their old RV. Trying to make the perfect Griswald Family Christmas under incredible stress, Clark becomes hilariously angry and nostalgic, eventually blowing up when he can’t take it any longer. In the end, Clark concludes that the holidays are less about money and decor than spending time with family, especially those willing to commit felonies for your happiness. “Yule Crack Up!” Rated a strong PG-13 for vulgarity, profanity, and sexual references.

INDUSTRY EXPERTS
CORNERSTONE WEALTH MANAGEMENT
WORKING WITH PROFESSIONALS By Matt Stutes, Certified Financial Planner
The financial world is a complex one to navigate. As you transition to working with a financial professional, here are key points to consider.
Standards of Professionalism
The term “financial professional” is often used loosely to characterize anyone who receives compensation for providing financial guidance. But there is a stark difference between self-proclamation and industry-certification, with the latter carrying with it objective standards of competence. Financial professionals can earn industry certifications by completing accredited courses of study. For instance, there is a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP™) certification; the Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®) designation; and a Registered Financial Consultant (RFC).
Fees and Expenses
Financial professionals are compensated in different ways. Some bill for their time only, and do not sell products or services; others earn commission on transactions, such as when their client buys or sells stocks and bonds; some do both fees and commission for their work.
Managing your financial affairs can be complex and challenging. A financial professional can help you evaluate and assess your financial goals and tax liabilities, while pursuing a strategy that aligns with your risk tolerance. Many will present you with a written financial plan that helps you pursue and adhere to your goals. It will also help you readjust tactics should your financial circumstances change. 30 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
In working with a financial professional, it’s helpful to understand the person’s background and training to determine whether it is a good fit for you. Important questions to ask include: Why did you become a financial professional? What is your training and background? Do you offer specific or general recommendations? How do you implement your recommendations? Which services and advice do you provide? Do you perform annual reviews?
By partnering with a financial advisor, you are making a commitment to a more secure financial future.
Many financial professionals are also accountants, lawyers, stockbrokers, or insurance agents, each bringing complimentary skills and training to contribute to one’s financial stability. For instance, an attorney who specializes in estate planning can serve as a financial professional for retirement planning or estate and trust planning.
Value Benefits
Selecting a Professional
Relationship Building
When you first meet with your financial professional, be transparent about your financial needs and goals. A skilled professional should be able to ask you questions that help you clarify your goals. Before your meeting, ask what documents you should bring. Examples include your will, insurance policies, pension information and investment account statements. Prepare to discuss key subject areas, such as retirement, cash flow, savings, college, emergency funds and estate planning.
Working with Your Financial Professional
After you have developed clear investment goals and strategies, your professional will prepare a financial plan for you to review. The plan will include major objectives and tactics for reaching your goals. The plan may also include recommendations so that your portfolio can align to your risk tolerance and goals. By partnering with a financial professional, you are making a commitment to take better control of your finances and create a structured path toward a more secure financial future.

FEATURE STORY
CANBY’S BRICKS & MINIFIGS
In The Brick Of It By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer • Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
here’s a soundtrack to Bricks & Minifigs, the popular LEGO resale store on Highway 99E in Canby, and it’s not from The LEGO Movie 2. True, that movie plays in the background at the store more often than not. But the real ambiance comes from the sound of LEGO enthusiasts — the young and the young at heart alike — digging through the store’s sprawling bulk tables in search of that perfect piece. It’s a sound which owner David Thornton never tires of. “I love that sound, I really do,” David says. “That, to me, is just the sound of LEGO.” The pickers who ply these fertile hunting grounds are as varied as the pieces found therein. Some are kids looking for replacement pieces or letting their imaginations run wild. Others come with detailed build lists and are searching for all the pieces they need like a scavenger hunt. Others are what David calls “master builders.” To them, the bulk tables represent an infinite canvas upon which
34 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
they can — and do — construct anything their minds can envision. David has long worked in customer service, but even he can’t believe he gets to spend his days helping people find, build and play with something that is one of his biggest passions. “LEGO is just the greatest product in the world,” David says. “It’s beyond a toy. It’s an art medium; it can teach kids science and technology. And that’s what’s really fulfilling
Bricks & Minifigs leans hard into its reputation as the place for all things LEGO — offering new and used kits (as well as a chance for customers to buy, sell and trade), as well as accessories and merchandise. The store offers many products and pieces that are no longer in production, and custom items you can’t find anywhere else.
about what we do here: We help people capture that magic.” When David first learned about Bricks & Minifigs 10 years ago, he was skeptical that a store could survive - let alone thrive - on a single product. But when he franchised the Canby location 4 years ago, he bought a thriving business that has continued to grow thanks to the support of the community and the unique, ever-changing nature of LEGO and how it appeals to a wide variety of builders.
“We try to have an all-encompassing LEGO experience when you come to the shop,” David says. “The sights, the sounds. I love it when you see someone coming in for the first time because they’re almost on tiptoes — like they can’t believe what they’re seeing. And our regulars love coming here because they know we can help them find exactly what they need.” That experience includes its famous train set, a sprawling custom world comprised of and inspired by numerous stories including Lord of the Rings and Disney fairy tales. A simple on-off switch gives even the smallest of patrons the chance to interact with LEGO products.
The store’s newest display, a vertical, multi-layered tableau inspired by Minecraft, stands nearly six feet tall and has also proven very popular with customers. Bricks & Minifigs offers sales, stocking stuffers and other activities during the holidays such
as scavenger hunts, and its newly reopened party room is the perfect birthday setting for the LEGO lover in your life.
Bricks & Minifigs is located at 250 SW 1st Ave. in Canby. For more information, visit bricksandminifigs.com/canby-or, call 503-263-3337, or check them out on Facebook at facebook. com/bricksandminifigures and Instagram at instagram.com/ bricksandminifigs

THE SHOCKING F-150 LIGHTNING By Donovan Darling, Active Media Staff Writer
T
he forthcoming F-150 Lightning is no secret. In 2019, Ford shocked the world when their EV prototype truck pulled a million-pound load of 42 F-150s in double decker rail cars. The Lightning will share most of the regular F-150’s body and features, but the biggest difference is the motor. Swapping out the gas-powered V-6 and V-8, the Lightning will be powered by a pair of electric motors and one of two battery packs. The Standard-Range battery aims to deliver up to 230 miles per charge and the ExtendedRange battery aims for 300 miles. The mighty power displayed by the F-150 Lightning shouldn’t surprise you. The main advantage of an electric motor over internal-combustion is its ability to deliver instant torque smoothly and right from a dead stop. The main challenge in using electric vehicles on a daily basis is energy storage. As the battery capability, energy storage, and efficiency become better, so does the range between charge cycles. And that’s where the new F-150 comes in.
charge from 15 percent to 80 percent of battery capacity in 44 minutes. Ford also engineered the F-150 Lightning to serve as a backup generator, with a fully-charged truck supplying up to three days of electricity for the average household in the event of a power outage. All F-150 Lightning models come standard with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. With the Standard-Range battery the motors combine to make 426 horsepower, but the Extended-Range battery boosts horsepower to 563, and torque is an impressive 775 lb-ft for either battery. The Lightning has a tow-capacity of 7,700-10,000 pounds and payload capacity of 1,800-2000 pounds (Standard-Range vs. Extended-Range).
Owners will be able to charge their F-150 Lightnings at home via 110- and 220-volt outlets, and the truck can be charged at public fast-charging stations. Ford says it can

Fisher’s Supply, Inc. By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto “Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink.” - Samuel Taylor Coleridge That’s the famous line from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, recounting the tale of a sailor stuck at sea, surrounded by water yet, ironically, dying of thirst. If you live in a rural area, you may sometimes feel the same way. Potable water is something we can’t always take for granted out here. Fortunately for us, over the past 40 years, we’ve been able to rely on Fisher’s Supply, Inc. to keep us hydrated. Owners Randy and Patsy Yoder purchased the business back in 2000 from the original owners, Adrian and Kay Fisher. Born and raised on a farm just outside of Canby, Randy had grown up in agriculture and he’d known the Fishers his whole life. Taking over the business was less of a reorganization than it was a simple matter of “passing the torch” from one family to another. That said, since Randy and Patsy took over, the business has grown by leaps and bounds. They assist somewhere

in the vicinity of 45,000 customers every year, from plumbers, to contractors, to excavators, to homeowners, and everything in between. And it’s no wonder; since they are the premier pump, irrigation, and water treatment supply store in the area! Randy and Patsy have an amazing staff, most of whom have been doing this for almost as long as they have. They’re all like family, and even those who aren’t related by blood might as well be. They all have so many years of experience, and they’ve worked together for so long, they’re just a well-oiled machine. You feel that the minute you walk into their store and are met by smiling, happy, confident faces who are eager to help. Which brings us to their number one priority: customer service. Whether it’s in-store or out in the field, absolute customer satisfaction is their goal. And for anyone who has met Randy, you know his word is gold. You don’t get that kind of promise from the big box chains. Businesses like Fisher’s Supply, Inc. are truly the heartbeat of our community. MEET THE ATHLETE
PROUDLY SPONSORED BY ROTH HEATING & COOLING
COUGAR DANCE TEAM By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
T
here’s one thing at the top of Canby Cougar dance team head coach Jenn Chaffee’s Christmas list this year: The chance for her dancers to — finally — defend their 2019 state title. It has been a long time coming. Jenn, along with assistant coaches James Healey and Jenna Jernstrom and their hard-working student-athletes, built a dance dynasty over the past decade, winning five straight state championships between 2015 and 2019. They seemed unstoppable, but COVID-19 had other ideas.
The team was poised to defend their title and fight for a sixth championship in March of 2020, when state officials made the difficult decision to cancel the event — less than a week before it was set to begin. It’s a period that’s still painful to remember, even nearly two years later. “I was cleaning our storage room last week, and I came across all these garment bags that had our costumes from that year,” Jenn recalled. “And I burst into tears because it brought back a flood of emotions, of having to tell the kids that State was canceled and just processing through all that.” Once safe guidelines were in place, the Cougars resumed dancing activities and practices, mainly outdoors — even when the weather wasn’t exactly conducive to it. Interestingly, without the focus on competition to drive them, Jenn felt like it 46 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
was easier to rediscover their passion for dancing. “When you remove the competitive piece, it gets back to basics: Why are we doing this?” she said. “Let’s continue to build our skills, even if it’s outside on the concrete in January, and it’s raining sideways and 38 degrees outside. But we were together and moving and learning and keeping that process going. And that really is essential for dancers and performers.” The adversity also helped reveal the team’s dedication and resolve, she believes. “They must really love dance to show up and be out there with us,” she said with a laugh. “Like, the weather element certainly wasn’t enjoyable for us as adults, I’m sure it wasn’t enjoyable for them. But it was enjoyable to feel like we came and we danced, we moved to music, we created, we learned something; we had this shared experience together out here.” Athletics resumed at the end of the 2020-21 school year, albeit with most seasons severely shortened and no formal postseason. Dance, unfortunately, was the one sport for which there was no head-to-head competition. Instead, teams were judged and scored on their own merits by independent panels that visited each school. Still, Jenn and her
crew made the most of it. “We tried to keep as many traditions alive as we could,” she said. “We did everything we could to build a whole season of memories, in a season where we never competed once.” This year, dance is finally back, and the Cougars are so ready for it. “It’s so exciting and invigorating, honestly, to be back,” Jenn stated. “It’s so nice to have a calendar with dates, being able to tell parents, ‘Set these dates aside. We are going to other schools!’” Of course, it looks a little different than it did before COVID-19 — and protocols can even differ school to school. Some administrators, for example, have been uncomfortable with bringing back the pre-pandemic practice of allowing visiting teams to use classrooms to get dressed and ready for competition. “We’ve just been like, ‘No problem. I will roll with that,’” said Jenn. “We will do whatever. We are just so excited to have
this. So we might be getting ready on our bus doing hair and makeup and costumes on the bus and then coming back inside the building.” The Canby Cougar dance team will be performing its fall season starting in mid-November, followed by the winter season, which culminates in the state championship next March.

Solst ice WINTER
The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It's marked by the point at which the North Pole is at its farthest from the sun during its yearly orbit around the sun. Despite the temperature outside, the winter solstice is considered the astronomical beginning of winter. Meteorological winter begins December 1st and lasts until the end of February. Depending on how far north a person is in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter, their day can range from 9.5 hours to absolutely no sunrise at all. On the bright side, the days will gradually become longer in the Northern Hemisphere until the summer solstice in June. In the Southern Hemisphere, this same day marks the summer solstice and the Southern Hemisphere’s longest day of the year. Winter lovers, enjoy the shortest day of the year. Those longing for more sunlight, prepare to celebrate. Longer days are ahead.

CANBY MUSIC: A FAMILY AFFAIR By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
Chris O’Neil remembers the moment like it was yesterday. He and his family were in downtown Canby doing a bit of shopping. They found their way to Canby Music, at its original location on Northwest 1st Avenue. Chris started chatting with the owner, Brian Haines, and asked in a sort of offhand way if Brian thought that he could teach him the guitar. He’ll never forget the response: “No hesitation, no pause, just ‘Of course I can,’” Chris recalls. Thus began a friendship that has spanned a decade or more, involving multiple generations of both the O’Neil and Haines families. Three generations of the O’Neil family take lessons at Canby Music, covering a wide array of instruments — including guitar, ukulele, flute, violin, drums and saxophone. Every Wednesday night, the family comes together at Canby Music for a group

lesson and jam session. “A half-hour lesson can turn into a little bit more, because we have so much fun,” Chris explains. “It’s one of the most special experiences. People say, ‘Oh, I can hardly wait for the weekend.’ For me, it’s Wednesday night. That’s my favorite night of the week.” The journey has also been remarkable and impactful on Brian — a rare gem in his experience as a business owner, musician and teacher. Canby Music offers a wide variety of instruments for sale or rent, as well as repairs, accessories and lessons (including vocal). The store is located at 590 NW 1st Ave. in Canby. DRAGONFLY DETAILING
Attention to Detail
Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
L
ife, circumstances and genetic makeup have combined to curse Jon Hutchinson with a dreadful affliction: an obsessive attention to detail. Rather than lament his fate, he’s spun it into a successful career as one of the area’s best and most prolific car detailers — including the last 12 years at his own shop, Dragonfly Detailing.
“It’s all about the details,” Jon says. “It’s very rewarding to be able to take a vehicle in almost any condition and make it look like new again.” Dragonfly offers top-of-the-line auto detailing service on all vehicles at competitive prices. And they mean all vehicles. In addition to cars, trucks, vans and other passenger vehicles, Jon has detailed full-size commercial buses, boats, and even a helicopter.
“I prefer cars,” Jon quips. “The helicopter job was fun, but it took us a week.” In his more than 20 years of industry experience, Jon has renewed, restored and replaced various damaged, broken, and missing parts on many different vehicles. Dragonfly’s expansive menu of detail cleaning services includes: its signature bubble bath hand-wash and scrub; vacuum; windows; door jams; shampoo scrub; high-pressure air cleaning; pressure washing (exterior, trim, molding, emblems and windows); bug removal; window polish; wheel / tire / rim clean and polish; and the “smoothas-glass” hand wax polish. In addition to full interior and exterior detailing, the shop offers repairs for tires and trim, polish paint to remove swirls and light scratches, clean and polish exhaust tips, road paint and tar removal, and hard-water spot removal. Dragonfly also offers a wide variety of reconditioning services such as touch-ups, decal removal, paint restorations, and windshield replacement. “I like to say I’m cleaning Canby — one car at a time,” Jon says. “Give us a call today and see what we can do for you.” In addition to its reputation for fine detail work, Dragonfly is also known locally for its distinctive decor: a large disco ball that Jon bought at a yard sale for 10 bucks and proudly displayed along North Ivy Street for years. He took it down after becoming leery that it might fall and damage a customer’s vehicle. But he promises to one day return it to a place of glory — on the other side of the shop. Dragonfly Detailing offers free quotes and their work is fully guaranteed. The garage is located at 119 NW 4th Ave. in Canby. For more information, call or text 503-502-7417, or check out their website at dragonflydetailing.com.

ack in the late 1940s and early 1950s, console TVs had come down in price enough that most homes had one. Apparently it was thought that the light from the TV could be damaging to the eyes if you watched it too much. So, TV Lamps came into common use. They were small and provided a little light near your TV. They're electric and commonly made of pottery, but also of ceramic, plaster or metal. Designed to cast light on the wall behind the television rather than providing general light to the room, this was intended to mitigate eye damage. They use small bulbs in the base or back of the lamp or behind a flat shade, deflecting light to the wall. To me - they’re just fun. Does anyone remember the black panther TV lamp? Like the panther,

most TV lamps are definitely kitschy, even tacky, and come in lots of shapes and colors. Thousands were made by many, many companies – sold in dime stores for under a couple dollars. There’s roosters, horses, deer, all kinds of boats from sailing ships to Asian junks, plant life, to people in all types of period dress or ethnic clothing. Some were even cast with planters so you could bring the outdoors inside. If you’ve ever been in our shop, you know that we have a goal of color, quirkiness and usefulness - all of which can be filled by a great TV lamp. We're open 7 days a week: 10-6 Mon-Fri & Sun 10-5. CLACKAMAS COUNTY WINTER FAIR
LET THERE BE LIGHTS AT CLACKAMAS COUNTY
Winter Fair Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
I
t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center as the Winter Fair returns for its sophomore campaign — though the event itself will look rather different from last year’s iteration. While the inaugural Winter Fair was a drivethru event made necessary because of statewide COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s edition will be a full walk-about experience. “Last year, we went with a drive-thru rendition for COVID protocols, and this year we’re excited to make it a walk-around event,” Fairgrounds Marketing and Event Coordinator Tyler Nizer says. “We’ve made an experience that can still be safe in the current environment, while bringing something that families can really enjoy.”
“We’ve been working on this project for years actually. And last year, with the community needing more drivethru options, we were able to make it happen. It probably wouldn’t have happened last year otherwise.” The layout will be different this year as well, with many additions and new features aimed at better facilitating a laid-back pedestrian experience. Entry will be by the Red Gate, which will kick off with a 12-foot-tall ornament and one of the highlights of last year’s Winter Fair: a 166-footlong tunnel of cascading, multi-colored twinkles. Beyond that will be a huge light curtain across one side of the Ely Arena, which can be customized to display almost anything — including custom messages. Lauren says that one package the fairgrounds offers is aimed at popping the big question. “Can you imagine ‘Will you marry me?’ in huge letters on the side of Ely?” Lauren asks. “That’s one thing we were really passionate about adding this year.” The fairgrounds worked with a local light vendor to craft the rest of the Winter Fair experience, which boasts more than 200,000 lights. The event concludes with a Santa’s village designed by local resident Stephanie Anderson, whose home on Northwest 14th Avenue is particularly noted for its elaborate Halloween and Christmas displays. The Jolly Old Elf himself will visit the village to talk and take photos with children every night the fair is open (bring your camera!).
Though the Winter Fair debuted last year during the pandemic, Lauren Humphreys, member of the Clackamas County Fair Board and one of the lead organizers of the event, said it had actually been in the works long before. “I think this was just an awesome thing that we could offer,” Lauren says. 58 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

hether it’s a Belgian farmhouse ale or a pinot noir from just down the road at St. Josef’s Winery, the selection at the Cutsforth’s Market Beer & Wine Department has a little something for everyone, showcasing the best from local breweries and wineries — plus a wide selection from around the world. “We also consider Washington to be local for wines,” wine steward and assistant beer buyer Joel Cutsforth explained. “We’re right near Walla Walla. We’re right near the Columbia Valley. We’re in the Willamette Valley, which is one of the top agricultural producers in the state. We’re in a really great area for wine.” Beer, too. Since its founding in the 1850s, the Canby area has been an agricultural hub for Clackamas County, producing strawberries, apples, fresh vegetables, dairy products, livestock, flax and hops — lots and lots of hops. While much has changed in the past 150 years or so, some of that still holds true. “If you take just a little tour down south from us, you’ll find some of the biggest hops growers are right next to us,” grocery manager and beer buyer Andrew Rivera said. “We’ve definitely taken advantage of that and spread the love.” Showcasing the best the local market has to offer has always been a high priority for Cutsforth’s, whether the department is beer & wine or meat and produce. But the former is one area where the store also makes a point to cast a wide net for new tastes and unique flavors — across the United States and even internationally.
“We carry some of the main beers and wine that you can find at all the big box stores, but 60 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

we also have a lot of bottles you can’t find elsewhere,” Joel said. “Wines from smaller vendors and from all around the world, and we are trying to bring in new items all the time. Nothing ever stays the same. We’re always shifting gears and trying new things.” They bring the same philosophy to the beer side of the equation as well: “We were one of the first grocery stores in Oregon with a taproom,” said Andrew. “We were the first grocery store with a crowler machine. We’ve been doing growler fills and exclusive, draft-only pours from breweries for more than 20 years now. I think the owners knew really early on that there was something big in craft beer, and we’ve followed the trends ever since.” The nature of Cutsforth’s as a small, local, family-owned and operated store lends itself to that approach. “We’re an independent store, so we are able to make changes all the time,” Joel said. “A lot of the big box stores really don’t have as much flexibility or control. And that’s one of our favorite things: We’re in charge of everything.” Cutsforth's Beer & Wine is staffed by friendly stewards and employees with a deep knowledge of their products, who can help you find the perfect pairing suggestion for any meal or occasion — from a Friday night or holiday family dinner to a 40th wedding anniversary celebration. As always at Cutsforth's, mix and match any six bottles of wine to get 10% off. Cutsforth’s Market is located at 225 NE 2nd Ave. in Canby. For more information, call 503-266-2016. otary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary Clubs exist in almost every country. Our members change lives locally and connect with other clubs to work on international projects that address today’s most pressing challenges.
Canby Rotary strongly supports basic education and literacy through schoolbased literacy, mentoring, and academic scholarship programs. Rotarians and other community members volunteered in late October to participate in Canby High School virtual mock job interviews. Students prepare a written resume and practice interview skills prior to the actual mock interview with a community member. Interviewers ask students to “tell me about yourself”, “describe your goals”, list your strengths and weaknesses”, and other questions designed to give the students a near real life experience. Interviewers provide verbal and written feedback. One student remarked he really appreciated the
interview and would be much less nervous for the “real” one. Canby Rotarians have participated three times a year for more than ten years in the school activity. Canby Rotary believes good health is everyone’s right. Disease results in misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide each year. That is why treating and preventing disease is so important to us. In October, club members raised funds to continue the effort to eradicate polio and attended an educational program about polio and other infectious diseases. Club members decided to raise funds for the planned Carol Danielson Suzuki Cancer Center at Providence Falls Medical Center. The facility will bring world-class cancer care much closer to patients in Clackamas County. Canby Rotary Members, their family members, and community friends attended a tropical island themed dinner and auction at Willamette Valley Country Club in November to raise funds for the Cancer Center. Forty club members participated in the “Bridges to Hope” campaign which raised $16,795 from generous people who are committed to bringing hope to others in our community.
Community service focused on youth is important to Canby Rotary and is central to the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” which means unselfish volunteer service.

ROTARIANS: PEOPLE OF ACTION Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. CANBY ROTARY PROMOTES PEACE: CANBY COMMUNIT Y SUMMIT
I
t all started with an idea. The idea was to gather community leaders for a collaborative conversation focused on building relationships and easing the tensions that threaten to divide us. Seventy-nine community members attended the Summit on October 22 at Willamette Valley Country Club. There was a diverse group of people including men and women in ages spanning eightdecades with a variety of occupations and faiths. Community-building can be messy, but you would not have been able to tell that from listening to the lively conversation and nodding heads as people shared thoughts and perspectives on the strengths and challenges of Canby. Many examples of community strengths were shared including how people helped their neighbors during the wildfire emergency in September 2020, providing food to families who are experiencing financial difficulties, sharing shelter and assistance during the February 2021 ice storm, and the many community
service projects undertaken by local groups and individuals. The guiding principles of the Summit were to promote peace, be non-political, deepen relationships, and cultivate curiosity about views of world that may differ from their own. One community member said, “As our community becomes more diverse, we need to remember the value of kindness.” With music, food, a few laughs, and inspirational messages the evening gave hope for stronger relationships in the days and months ahead. Every community has challenges. The community of Canby has the wisdom and willingness to face these challenges together.
SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
Wildfires, Ice Storms, Heat Waves – Oh My! Lose power during the ice storm of 2021? Did you have a hard time finding batteries for the flashlight, or maybe even finding the flashlight at all? How about finding gasoline? Being prepared for an emergency matters most in the midst of the crisis. These emergencies are nothing compared to the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake predicted to strike our region. FEMA projects that nearly thirteen thousand people will die in the Cascadia earthquake and tsunami. Another twenty-seven thousand will be injured, and the agency expects that it will need to provide shelter for a million displaced people, and food and water for another two and a half million. When this scale of a crisis strikes, communities like Canby will not only be facing our own challenges, but we may be absolutely overwhelmed by evacuees from other regions. The Rotary Club of Canby is preparing now for emergencies like these. Our team is bringing together an emergency cache of supplies that can be used in a community-wide crisis. We are doing this in coordination with local first responders and government officials. Doing the work now could literally save lives in the next crisis.

HOLIDAY WINES
Essential Wines
For Your Holiday Table
By Robert Matsumura, Active Media Contributing Writer
H
ave you ever stood in the wine aisle of your local grocers during the holidays, baffled as to the appropriate wine for meals featuring poultry, beef, pork, or seafood—not to mention the array of appetizers and side dishes? Our guide below will help simplify this process with six wines flexible enough to compliment your holiday cuisines from autumn through winter.
Sauvignon Blanc
Also referred to as “Sancerre” in France, this medium-light bodied white wine is a winner. It features a crisp, herbal profile perfect for turkey, goose, chicken, or seafood.
Pinot Noir
With its bright acidity and versatile nature, Pinot Noir is one of the best choices for the holidays. It excels across the board with poultry, pork, and hearty beef dishes. The Pacific Northwest and California offer many solid choices with fruit-forward characteristics sure to please even the most discriminating palates.
Zinfandel
A more full-bodied white, Chardonnay is an excellent partner to fish or roast poultry. Likewise, Chardonnay pairs beautifully with beef, should you have guests who prefer to drink only white. In this case, opt for an oak-forward Chardonnay, as it will enhance the robust flavors of the beef.
Red Zinfandel has long been considered a great Thanksgiving wine for its ability to compliment turkey while also blending well with cranberry sauce and other sides. Its fruit-forward profile, along with notes of cinnamon, clove, and vanilla evoke the holiday season. Zinfandel also performs admirably with beef and pork, should your holiday dinner include a roast or baked ham.
Viognier
Cabernet Sauvignon
Chardonnay
Not as well-known as other whites, Viognier is a fantastic partner to roast turkey and other poultry dishes. Rounded in body with undertones of honey and spice, some of the best Viognier comes from the Rhone region of France, as well as Australia and South Africa. Like Chardonnay, Viognier can also play well with beef.
Cabernet Sauvignon, the “King of Reds,” is the ultimate pairing for beef. Cabernet’s dark, full-bodied character, often reminiscent of currants and black cherry, enhances the hearty flavors of such entrees as prime rib or crown roast.
Syrah/Shiraz
Another fabulous red wine to pair with beef is Syrah (known as Shiraz in Australia). This luscious red bursts with complex flavors from pepper to cherry, smoky to floral. Syrah, made in France’s Rhone Valley, is generally known more for its elegance and complexity, while Shiraz is bolder and more fruit-driven. If beef is on the menu, you can’t go wrong with Syrah.
Which Wine to Bring to a Party?
Let’s say you’ve been invited to a holiday event and wish to bring a bottle of wine, but you’re uncertain of the menu. The safest choices might be Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Both wines have versatility across a broad spectrum of entrees, and will be welcome additions to the holiday table. All of these featured wines are readily available at your local markets, where helpful staff can assist you in determining the best selections and values for your particular budget. 70 • CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE
HOLIDAY CHEESES
Cheese For The Holidays A Quick & Easy Guide To A Savory Cheese Board By Robert Matsumura, Active Media Contributing Writer
A
s the holidays roll around, entertaining family and friends takes center stage. For many of us the holiday cheese board is a star player in the food festivities, yet with the plethora of choices available at local markets, assembling it can prove a bit daunting.
Basic Strategy
For presentation purposes, select cheeses of different colors, shapes, and sizes. When calculating the amount of cheese to purchase, three ounces per guest is a solid guideline. Thus, if you’re serving three types of cheese and entertaining 12 guests, you should buy at least 12 ounces of each type. If other appetizers will be served, the amount of cheese can be reduced to two ounces. In general, three varieties of cheese—a hard, a semi-hard, and a soft—will provide ample variety for most events.
Hard Cheeses Aged Gouda
This Dutch cheese is always a strong player on any cheese board. If you prefer a sharper, nuttier flavor with those delicious salty bits, opt for a Gouda aged at least 10 months. Many of the premier Goudas will be aged up to 18 months or more. Top brands include Beemster, Parrano, and Rembrandt.
Manchego
A full-bodied cheese made from sheep’s milk, this Spanish cheese from the La Mancha region is creamy yet nutty with toasty nuances. Aged Manchego has a wonderful granular texture much like aged Gouda, and will be a superb compliment to fruit or meats such as prosciutto, salami, and capicola.
Cheddar
A good aged cheddar is always a welcome member of any cheese board. American, English, and Irish cheddars are all fantastic choices, providing slightly different characteristics. In general, the longer a cheddar is aged the sharper the flavor. Tillamook, Kerrygold, and Cabot are all fine choices.
Semi-hard Cheeses Fontina
Originally from Italy, this versatile cheese features a sweet and pungent character nuanced with tones of butter and roasted nuts. It is rich and creamy with an intensity of flavor that increases with age. Sartori, Stella, and Boar’s Head are all excellent brands.
Comté
One of the most popular French cheeses, this creamy, mild cheese is a pleasing addition to any cheese board as it blends well with bolder flavored meats and preserves while adding a luxurious undertone. Jura Flore, Fort Rousses, and St. Antoine are all quality brands.
Soft Cheeses Brie
Soft and creamy, with a musky complexion, this French cheese is spreadable and delicious slathered on bread or crackers. Try it warmed and melted. Excellent brands are President, La Bonne Vie, or Dietz and Watson. Marin French is a quality domestic brand.
Camembert
Another soft spreadable cheese that hails from the Normandy region of France is Camembert. Not quite as creamy as Brie, it is less pungent, and pale yellow in color. Often celebrated as the most popular cheese of France. For festive additions consider cranberry cheeses such as Wensleydale or Celebrity. Crave truffles? Explore the many truffled cheeses on the market such as truffled Brie and Gouda.

FRANK HIGASHI
By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
S
eiyu “Frank” Higashi was born in Los Angeles, California in August 1918 to Japanese immigrants from the island prefecture of Okinawa. As such, he lived through two world wars — narrowly escaping the first, but destined to play a pivotal role in the second. Frank and his family returned to Okinawa shortly after he was born, and he grew up in a tiny village known as Nago. At 18, he came back to the United States to finish high school in Los Angeles. He would not see his family again for eight years — until he returned to Okinawa again, this time as an invading soldier. Higashi enlisted in the United States Army a few months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. As a second-generation JapaneseAmerican, he was one of the “Nisei” soldiers, courageous service members who were despised by Japanese forces and endured prejudice and suspicion from their own American countrymen, yet they were among the most decorated heroes of the war. Frank graduated at the top of his class from Fort Snelling where he received special training for a mission that was critical to the military’s planned invasion of Okinawa. Okinawa, a 66-mile-long, narrow strip of subtropical jungles and beaches, is the smallest and least populated of the five main islands of Japan, but was a linchpin of the United States’ strategy to defeat the Imperial Army. Thanks to his childhood growing up on the island, Frank had learned the Okinawa dialect, which is not standard Japanese. As such, he was attached as an interpreter for a 10-member unit of the
HIGASHI REUNITED WITH HIS FATHER IN OKINAWA ON JUNE 21, 1945
Military Intelligence Service during the three-month Battle of Okinawa. The campaign was brief but bloody. Nearly 100,000 Imperial Japanese troops and 150,000 Okinawans (about half of the island’s pre-war population) died or committed suicide during the fighting — numbers that shocked American military strategists and were probably inflated by the Japanese people’s reluctance to surrender under any circumstances. Military historians give much credit to the efforts of Nisei linguists, including the Military Intelligence Service, in sweeping caves, intercepting and translating documents written in Japanese, and communicating with the local Okinawan people to help bring the battle to a quicker end. “The Nisei shortened the Pacific War by two years and saved possibly a million American lives,” Major General Charles Willoughby later said. The day before the fighting officially ended on June 22, 1945, Higashi managed to track down his aging father in Nago. A photo of the pair taken by the U.S. Army Signal Corps was sent back to the home front and published in dozens of newspapers across the country. Frank and his fellow members of the Military Intelligence Service, along with other WWII-era Nisei units, were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2011. He eventually moved to the Canby area to be near one of his daughters, Irene Breshears, who with her husband, Mike, was instrumental in the creation of the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Memorial in Canby. He joined the Canby/Aurora VFW Post 6057 and was its oldest member. Seiyu “Frank” Higashi died Nov. 15, 2020. He was 102.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. 5. Set mixer to low speed and gradually stir dry ingredients into butter mixture. CANBY HISTORY
STORM OF THE CENTURY
waters of nearby Mount Scott Creek spilling over its banks and into his and neighbors’ front yards.
Floods of 1996
“We got rid of the gravel in the sandbags three weeks ago, stored it in a pile out back,” Hale, dressed in a rain slicker and knee-high rubber boots outside his home at R’Layne Apartments on Southeast Lake Road, told The Oregonian at the time. “We didn’t think we’d have this problem again.”
Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer
It quickly became evident, however, that not only was Hale and his neighbors having this problem again — this time, it would be far worse.
Nestled amidst the banks of three rivers in the verdant Willamette Valley, Canby-area residents are no stranger to precipitation — or even its occasional byproduct: flooding. But few events compare to the storms and flooding of 1996, which pushed river and creek waters far beyond their banks 25 years ago, displacing thousands and causing millions of dollars in damage.
By late Tuesday afternoon, firefighters and rescue workers had massed along South Shady Road near the Molalla River, where water had seeped into the garages and basements of some homes and created moats around others. More than 40 mostly elderly residents were being evacuated, with the City of Molalla scrambling to set up an emergency shelter for those who had nowhere to go.
The first thing to remember is there was not “one” major flood of ’96. In fact, there were three distinct and devastating flooding events that year. The year was also bookended by major floods that are sometimes conflated: one in November 1995 — often remembered as the Veterans Day flood — and another in January ’97.
“I wonder what we did to make Mother Nature so mad,”’ Roy Ferris, 47, wondered aloud, a white cowboy hat keeping his head dry. One older couple waited for a rescue from one of the fire department’s five boats — surrounded by a pile of suitcases and bags.
When the skies opened Monday night, February 6, 1996 — and stayed open for four days — Milwaukie resident Tim Lane was initially reminded of that nightmare from three months earlier, when heavy rains on Veterans Day pushed the chocolate-brown
“Uh, ma’am, we can’t take all that,” a firefighter told her. “How about a toothbrush?” In Canby, the flooding was particularly bad along a Molalla

FLOODING OF THE WILLAMETTE RIVER FEBRUARY 1996 COURTESY OF U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS
tributary known as Alder Creek. The neighborhood was known to be prone to high waters during heavy rains, but few on Alder Creek Lane remembered it ever being as bad as it was that February. “This is bad. This is the first time I’ve seen flooding this high,” said Kim Scheafer, as she and her family waded through knee-high water in front of their house. But some of her neighbors, like Charlotte Sweeten, said they would stick it out — ignoring Canby firefighters’ pleas to evacuate. “I’m not really worried because I pray a lot,” Sweeten told The Oregonian, explaining that she had lost 50 to 60 fir trees in a devastating windstorm two months earlier — and welcomed a baby calf during a freak ice storm the week prior. She named it Frosty. “I guess God doesn’t want us to get bored with this weather.” Hydrologically speaking, the storm was a confluence of several unusual factors: a record amount of rainfall, coming on top of an above-average February snowpack and cold temperatures. As Jon Lea, a hydrologist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, described it at the time: “The ground is frozen solid and won’t absorb any runoff. It’s like dumping 10 inches of water all at once onto a parking lot.”
A man from Waldport, 25-year-old Tom Otter, was killed instantly when a tree swept up in a rockslide crushed the roof of his truck while stopped near Philomath. His two young children, who were with him in the truck, miraculously escaped injury. When the heavenly floodgates finally closed on Friday, February 9, muddy waters enveloped and, in some places, consumed hundreds of Canby homes and businesses. The worst damage was along the industrial strip of 99E near the Molalla River. Dozens of businesses were swamped and about 215 people were evacuated from Riverside RV Park. The mobile homes — more than 100 in total — were relocated to the Canby Square parking lot and unused land just east of what was then Jarboe’s Grill (now the Wild Hare Saloon). “The only thing we need now is a good earthquake,” Mark Jepson quipped to the Canby Herald. “I just wish property values were cheaper in Canby because I don’t think the RV park will be open to the public again soon.” (CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE)
A similar situation occurred in December 1964, when Oregon experienced a cold snap with near-record snowpacks already in place, followed by a very warm and wet storm that brought record rains. The resulting floods were the worst in Oregon’s history — killing 15 people and causing $148 million in damage. The floods of 1996 did not surpass those of 22 years earlier — but they came extremely close. Vehicles were swept away like toys, raging rivers roared like lions as low-lying residents fled to higher ground by the thousands, and downtown store owners sandbagged their premises throughout the Willamette Valley. Logs stored at Canby Sand & Gravel were swept downriver like toothpicks, wedging themselves against bridges and riverbanks as the rivers created new tributaries in farmlands that had never been seen before — washing away trees, homes, and anything else in the way. Highway 99E north of Canby was closed due to the threat of mud and rockslides caused by torrential rain. A total of five Clackamas County bridges — including Knights Bridge and Whiskey Hill Bridge — and more than 100 roads countywide were closed that week. Mudslides and water flows slowed drivers on 99E, 224, 43, and numerous Interstate 5 and 205 exits. CANBY COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE • 89
STORM OF THE CENTURY ... continued
Most of the city was spared, though water did pool at the intersection of Grant and 99E and outside the library on North Holly Street. In neighboring Molalla, the f lood was an unmitigated disaster. By Wednesday, the power was out, the city’s sewage treatment plant had burst a dike and was spewing raw sewage into Bear Creek, and the city’s water intake pump had failed, meaning there was — as the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge ironically said — “water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink.” “Other than that, it’s a peaceful day in the neighborhood,” a frazzled City Administrator Harvey Barnes quipped to a reporter. About 125 Barlow residents were also evacuated as a result of dikes giving way upstream. Some residents fought to protect their property with sandbags from Canby Builders Supply and sand provided by a local Boy Scout troop. The Canby Grove Conference Center, just west of Knights Bridge, was one of the hardest hit places in Canby, with floodwaters pouring onto the 54-acre grounds by Wednesday and chasing about 40 residents - staff and family — from their homes. “I believe the Lord prepared us for them,’’ said JoAnn Gorton, as she and husband Jerry, the center’s assistant director, welcomed 14 of the displaced staff members to share their three-bedroom home.

Barlow resident and Canby Sand & Gravel watchman Mike Mollgard woke Thursday morning to a scene from a nightmare — in his words, a “wall of water” outside his front door. “It was frothing white and carrying trees — whole trees, roots and all,” he recalled. Too scared to grab more than his jeans, a jacket and his old dog, Barney, Mollgard jumped in his truck and headed for higher ground, eventually using a flashlight to signal an Oregon National Guard helicopter crew for rescue. But Barney, the old dog, refused to get in the chopper. So Mollgard left the window down in the truck so the dog could jump out and swim to safety if needed. “I’ve got my life and my health,” he told a reporter after his ordeal. “That’s the main thing.” (The dog, by the way, was fine.) hile our levels of passion regarding the subject may vary, music holds a very special place in all of our hearts. It’s in our blood. It transports us. It moves us on a primal level, in ways we can’t always articulate, and it uniquely connects us. Who hasn’t walked down the street and felt an instant camaraderie with a complete stranger wearing the t-shirt of one of our favorite bands? Well I’m happy to announce that next time that happens, you’ll be bonding over a local artist, and she hails from right here in Canby. She’s causing quite a stir in the country music scene, and her name is Olivia Harms, also known as the Rhinestone Cowgirl!
Her mom was the perfect mentor; always there, always supportive, but never pushy, and she helped Olivia assemble a team and cut her first album when she was only 16! She was highly influenced by the popcountry music that was popular in 2011 and listed Shania Twain and Taylor Swift as her main influences. Olivia went to school for a Bachelors’ degree in agriculture. Having grown up in Canby on a 150 year-old family farm, which is as much a part of who she is as her music, she promised her mom she would secure an alternative future before chasing “the dream.” Now with her degree in her back pocket, she’s ready to take on the music world.

Regardless of your tastes, this is just great music, folks! I promise you’ll come for the catchy melodies but you’ll stay for the relatable, storytelling lyrics. Olivia’s on a massive nationwide tour now, so make sure to catch her the next time she comes through. But in the meantime, please support local artists and support Olivia by picking up her new album!
