Cheaper to Kill Leopards than Save Them? I heard a story today that made my blood boil. You know leopards are protected, right, and that their numbers are declining. Well, a farmer in the Heidelberg district killed a young leopard in a gin-trap. Gin traps are dreadful: two heavy metal “jaws” with sharp teeth. When an animal steps on the trigger plate, the jaws snap shut with such force that they o en break the animal's leg bone. This farmer caught the leopard with two gin traps: a front leg in one and back leg in the other. CapeNature was called but could not save the animal. Although this happened in July, the court case was recent. Gin traps are banned in about 90 countries, but you can buy them almost anywhere in South Africa. True, you have to get a permit to use gin traps to catch wild animals, but a permit doesn't help the trapped animal. The farmer admi ed he had set the gin traps, but said he didn't know he had to have a permit. His admission of guilt fine? R1000 - less than it costs him to fill his bakkie. How does our country value wildlife? Dr Bool Smuts, founder of the conserva on organisa on Landmark Founda on Trust, has 30 years of leopard data. Wherever possible, Bool tries to rescue trapped leopards for treatment and release them back into the wild. This costs between R60,000 and R80,000 – travel, vet costs, radio collars for the animals and compensa on for the farmer. “So someone who unlawfully kills a leopard pays R1000, yet for saving a leopard we pay R60,000 to R80,000,” Bool said. And he has had death threats – for looking a er wildlife. Leopards on the Garden Route are not doing well. “It's good news for leopards on the West Coast, but not on the Garden Route. It's all related to human ac vity.” Where there are more people, there are fewer leopards. In Bool's camera trap programmes, where cameras in the veld take a photograph whenever there is movement, humans triggered 80% of the photographs taken on the Garden Route, but only 20% on the West Coast. One thing that is crucial for leopards' long-term survival are wildlife “corridors”, areas of natural vegeta on connec ng the patches where leopards occur. This allows the animals to move, which brings in essen al fresh genes. Sadly, there are not many wildlife corridors on the Garden Route because of development. “This 'construc on creep' is devasta ng to wildlife, a silent killer, especially in Knysna. I don't think planning departments have much of a focus on biodiversity. The reality is that developers have quite a bit of sway.” So my blood boiled because the farmer who killed the young leopard got a R1000 slap-on-the wrist fine. Many would feel angry about that. Much harder to get involved in planning ma ers and get Knysna Municipality to take things like wildlife corridors seriously in development approvals. “If leopards are important to you, you need to stand up and fight for them,” says Bool. “If you can't fight yourself, then at least support those who are figh ng for them. Remain silent and these animals will disappear.”
