Sometimes Dolly Trumps Trump

Floods, drought and ﬁres, South Africa has certainly been hammered in this ﬁrst month of the year.

Overseas a Russian storm dropped snow two metres deep, trapping people in their houses, while globally, last year was declared the third hoest on record. Global warming.

That's just the weather – then there are the policians. Somemes you cannot make it up.

An American president who kidnaps a head of state – a roen dictator, sure, but that doesn't make it legal – and says the US will now run Venezuela. Lots of oil, of course.

Now he wants Greenland. Lots of mineral wealth there too.

But the bit that really cracked me up was Trump wring to the Norwegian government this week linking his proposal to take over Greenland to not winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligaon to think purely of peace,” Trump said.

So it's Norway's fault that he plans to invade Greenland? And what 8 wars are those?

If this were a novel, you would probably toss it aside because of the wildly unrealisc plot.

(BTW, the Norwegian government does not award Nobel Prizes.)

Then yesterday I was dipping into Winnie Tapson's 1961 book about old Knysna and Pleenberg Bay, and read about three Brish men sent by the governor of the Cape Colony to explore the forested eastern secon of the Colony

Somewhere near Storms River they came across an escaped slave who had built a house, was growing vegetables, fruit and tobacco in “an excellent garden”, had harnessed a spring, “manufactured good clothing” from skins and had even made poery utensils. They were impressed.

So what did they do? Put him in chains and sent him back to Cape Town.

What's the connecon between this incident 200 years ago and the events in the world today?

As a world we have progressed in so many ways, but just as colonialism and slavery were jusﬁed by the powerful naons back then, the powerful naons today sll enforce their wills on weaker naons. Might is Right – and scrap morality

Then today I read that Dolly Parton had turned 80 and celebrated it with a new version of Light on a Clear Blue Morning. It's about realising that bad stuﬀ doesn't last forever – a happy song.

You may be wondering what the point of all this is. Well, it's about opmism and pessimism. I like the feeling Dolly's song gives me and I don't like the feeling Trump's talk of invading Greenland gives me. I suppose those feelings are why most humans prefer to be opmisc, even when unrealisc.

The good news is that a researcher wrote in Time Magazine that it's possible to strike a balance between opmism and pessimism: “To believe the sun will shine and we will stay healthy, but get medical insurance anyway – and grab an umbrella just in case.”

Neil died suddenly at his Noetzie home - with his boots on, briefcase in hand, at the place he loved.

The longest living Noetzie resident will be sorely missed by his wife Norma and all his family, friends, colleagues and clients.

We will all remember him for his strong sense of duty, his wise counsel and willingness to help ... and his ﬁrm stand for people's rights, especially access to the coastline. Also that touch of grumpiness that could make one shudder.

Neil might have left Noetzie in a body bag… but he made sure it was in the back of a Landy.

• Research and develop new community based programmes and resources.

• Provide effective development services to persons with disabilities by: identifying community issues, needs and problems eg: services like ID, birth certiﬁcates & grant applications; assistive devices and referring them to the correct resources.

• Attending to community development work in the areas of operation on a weekly or regular basis.

• Develop a community proﬁle and survey of needs of a prospective community, for future forum discussions.

• Meet with social worker once a month for feedback/supervision sessions.

• Provide the social worker with a monthly activity report which is required for the management committee meeting and the funders.

• Attend relevant training.
