Baby Turtle Stranding Season I love February – it’s hot, the beaches are not as crowded as in school holidays and the south-easter’s not quite as fierce. February is also known for something sad. It is the start of the stranding season for baby turtles. In South Africa turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in northern KZN. They dig a hole with their flippers, lay a clutch of about 150 eggs, cover them up and go back to sea. From that moment, the struggle for survival begins. Monitor lizards dig up and eat the eggs, and so do humans. Once the turtles hatch, other predators are wai ng - ghost crabs and seagulls. Many of those that make it to the sea, are eaten by fish and sharks. The survivors swim for about 20 hours to get to the open ocean where they rely on currents to carry them along, conserving their energy for growing. Turtles need warm water to survive, so the warm Agulhas Current on our east coast is perfect, but some mes the hatchlings are pushed into the colder waters of the Western Cape. Some of them die, others are washed ashore, cold and dehydrated. Here’s the good part: each of us can help them survive with the help of Cape Town’s Two Oceans Aquarium’s Turtle Conserva on Centre. What dedicated people! Three of these turtle staffers, Lauren du Toit, Phinele Gazu and Chanet Rutgers, are currently on a road trip along the Western Cape coast to publicise how people can help save the stranded babies. They popped in to Noetzie last week. “If you find one, the most important thing is do not put them back into the sea. People think: ‘Ah a baby turtle, shame, let’s put him back into the water.’ Please don’t. They’re suffering from exhaus on and may be too weak to swim so you may be killing them, especially in the cold seas in the Western Cape where it could die of cold shock,” said Laura. Gently pick up the hatchling by scooping up the sand under it, so you don’t touch it, then place it on a towel or T-shirt and carry it home. Get an ice cream bakkie or box, line it with a lappie, and lower the turtle - and sand - into the container. Put it somewhere quiet, out of the sun and wind. Then phone the Turtle Rescue Hotline: 083 300 1663. “They’ll get through to Tracy who will arrange to get the hatchling to the Two Oceans Aquarium,” Chanet said. “There is always someone driving to Cape Town.” Once there the vet will examine it, determine what is wrong, and treat it. It will be released into the wild when recovered. Five of the world’s seven turtle species occur in South Africa. All of them are endangered. Some are caught in nets and drown. Some swallow so much plas c their gut is blocked and they starve to death. Some are killed by boat strikes. So keep your eyes peeled - and put the hotline into your phone now. Es mates are that only 1 in 1000 hatchlings survive to adulthood. Who knows – you could be the one who makes that 2 in 1000.
