Our House is on Fire The sun is shining, Christmas holidays are around the corner, and everyone is shrugging off the year’s cares for a few weeks. But something’s happening in the UAE that we can’t shrug off: the UN’s Climate Talks – COP 28. If there is one single thing that will affect every one of us on this planet, it is the decisions that world governments make at Cop 28 this week. It is not looking good. The UN has held interna onal climate talks every year since 1992, but in 30 years they have not come up with an effec ve global agreement to curb global hea ng. No pun, but these talks have largely been a lot of hot air. Except perhaps for the Paris Agreement in 2015 where governments agreed to keep global hea ng below 2°C to avoid the worst of the climate crisis. What has happened since 2015? Fossil fuel consump on and produc on has gone up. We know that burning fossil fuels is the biggest driver of global hea ng because of the carbon dioxide they emit. Burning coal, oil and gas accounts for about three quarters of all greenhouse gas emissions. We do of course need carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, a greenhouse gas that absorbs and radiates heat. If we did not have greenhouse gases, there would be no life on Earth. We would freeze. But too much carbon dioxide is a bad thing. It “traps” too much heat and causes temperatures to rise. The 10 ho est years on record have all been in the last 13 years and 2023 is set to be the ho est ever recorded. Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg could not understand why adults were not phasing out fossil fuels. In frustra on she staged her lonely school strike for the climate, which became a world movement among the young. The COP 28 talks started off well with the UN secretary-general saying we should agree to “phase out all fossil fuels” to keep the global temperature below 1.5°C. Hurrah! The world is already 1.1° C ho er than before industrial mes. Remember, the Ice Age was caused when the global temperature was just 5°C cooler, so a few degrees causes massive changes. Then this week, the dra agreement dropped “phasing out” fossil fuels. Instead it said countries could take ac on that included reducing consump on and produc on of fossil fuels. Oh please! As if that binds countries to do anything effec ve. The “phase out” clause was apparently dropped a er pressure from Saudi Arabia and the other oil producing countries. No surprise there. That is a weakness in these UN climate talks. For an agreement to be binding, all 198 countries have to agree. Why on earth do they not have something like a majority? We need urgent, dras c ac on now. The UN has had 30 years to do so and they have come up with breadcrumbs. Remember when Greta Thunberg addressed the World Economic Forum four years ago? She said: “I want you to panic. . . and then I want you to act. I want you to act as if your house is on fire. Because it is.” We can only hope that common sense prevails.
