People and Other Primates I spent the weekend at Pringle Bay and it was great to see this lovely spot again – but astonishing to see how fast vacant land is disappearing under concrete and paving. It is the same old story. The people who lay out townships in wild areas seem to use the same mindset as they do when laying out urban townships: cut it into squares and there you go. Well, there the baboons go too, and hundreds of species of small mammals, rep les and insects. They have been there since me immemorial, but they didn’t get space allocated to them. So the stage is set for what even has a name: human-wildlife conflict. For thousands of years baboons have roamed from the krantzes above Pringle to the plain below, foraging for food as they go. But during the last 65 years – a mere blip in the baboons’ mescale – people have been building houses across their ancient foraging routes. Now they have to climb over fences and roofs, munching leaves and seeds as they go, un l – “oh wow guys, check that loaf of bread, and OMG, a whole bowl of bananas!” In they go through the open window, scoffing as much as possible, when suddenly a screaming human appears and they rush to escape. A young one is terrified and his bowels open. Another knocks over the fruit bowl in his haste and it smashes on the floor. The human is onto the WhatsApp group immediately about how these blighters have trashed his house and everyone is up in arms. To get a human perspec ve, if you saw a R200 note lying in the gu er, would you not pick it up? Yes, because you spend a lot of your life working to get money, and suddenly here is some that required no effort at all. That is how baboons see human food. Masses of calories just there for the taking - more nutri on in half a loaf than in two day’s foraging. The point of this is that if people choose to live in areas where there are wild animals, the onus is on them to take steps to avoid conflict with wildlife as far as possible. It doesn’t take much to baboon-proof a house: those transparent burglar bars are brilliant and most people have security doors anyway. Buy a baboon-proof bin. Put up a solar panel to power a live wire around your gu ers. Most people do make an effort, but one s ll sees overflowing bins in Pringle, black bags le in the street that are ripped open by baboons feas ng on the scraps of food. We heard shots fired on Saturday and Sunday – we assumed at the baboons that were around at the me. Knysna also has people with just one solu on to the conflict, and have spray painted “KILL” across baboon informa on boards. I really hope this type of person does not represent the majority and that the a tudes of the sensible and pragma c sec on of residents will prevail. Otherwise we become the people that Patrick Edwards describes: “We take habitat away from wild animals and then kill them for invading ‘our’ space.”
