Poacher Sniffing Pooches Don’t know if you have ever watched sniffer dogs at work. I was lucky enough to watch dogs trained to sniff out ammuni on in the Kruger Na onal Park. They were new assets for Kruger’s an -poaching programme and put on a display for the press. We were taken to an area where there were a couple of rows of upside down containers, one of which contained bullets. A li le spaniel arrived with her handler and tro ed off, sniffing them one by one, un l she sat down next to one par cular container. The handler li ed it up and sure enough, there was a stash of bullets. So clever! The reason Kruger staff trained these dogs was because they had found that poachers were coming into Kruger posing as visitors, but their real purpose was poaching and they had guns and ammuni on hidden in their cars. These pooches were on gate duty and sniffed vehicles as they came in. One of the team told me that if the dogs said “yes” by si ng down, there was definitely ammuni on in the vehicle, but it was not always easy to find. “We searched one vehicle all over and eventually found the bullets in a pair of socks.” So I was delighted to read that now poacher-sniffing pooches have been trained to sniff out succulent plants. Succulent poachers have targeted South Africa for years. By June this year over one million illegally harvested plants had been confiscated in South Africa – about 3,000 to 6,000 a week. Es mates are that this represents only about 25% of the illegal trade. Most of these come from the wonderful Succulent Karoo that stretches from Luderitz in Namibia, through the Richtersveld, Namaqualand, Hantam, Tanqua, Roggeveld into the Li le Karoo. It is home to 6,350 plants, of which 40% grow nowhere else on earth. For succulent collectors, that makes them a “must have”. There are big markets for these poached succulents in the United States, Europe and Asia, with China emerging as one of the biggest. One can understand the a rac on. They come in an amazing array of shapes and when they bloom they are stunning. But succulent collectors are killing them faster than they can regrow. Last week one of the succulent sniffer dogs from Endangered Wildlife Trust teamed up with law enforcement officials at a roadblock in the Northern Cape. Poachers saw the roadblock and quickly dumped their stolen stash of 1,760 cri cally endangered succulents. When they were stopped at the roadblock, Delta the sniffer dog found one ny succulent, the size of a blueberry, in their vehicle. It was enough to link them with the discarded box. The two men were arrested. The succulents were all Conophytum subterraneum that grow only in the Richtersveld in an area smaller than one square kilometre. The only place they are found anywhere in the world. And poachers are pushing them to the verge of ex nc on. So it’s great news that law enforcement officers have another string to their bow with these sniffer dogs. As they say, some mes the best solu on to a problem has four legs and a wet nose.

LEAKING PIPES?
DON’T REPLACE, RELINE! Corroded pipes? Constant blockages from root intrusion? Shifted pipe joints causing leaks? Is a pipe replacement difficult or impossible? That is no problem, there is a better way! Nu Flow is able to reline leaking, broken and damaged pipes using an array of epoxy resins for different applications to rehabilitate the inside of such pipes to a better than new state. So why re-pipe when you can reline with Nu Flow? PIPE RELINING ON PRESSURIZED WATER SYSTEMS STEP 1 The pipe is tested for leaks STEP 2 An abrading agent is air blasted through the pipe to remove all rust and corrosion products. STEP 3 An epoxy mixture is the blasted through the pipe with conditioned air to uniformly distribute the epoxy lining through out the pipe segment. RESULT The result is a relined pipe, repaired from the inside. No damage to structutes! No chasing walls! No digging!
PIPE RELINING ON NON-PRESSURIZED WATER SYSTEMS STEP 1 An inspection camera is send down the pipe to reveal blocked and damaged areas. STEP 2 The pipe is cleaned with a cutting tool. STEP 3 A felt liner impregnated with epoxy is pulled into place. Within the liner is an inflatable bladder. When the liner is in place the bladder is inflated. STEP 4 The epoxy is left to cure. After curing the bladder is removed leaving behind a structural “pipe within a pipe”
