KNYSNA HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The Society will launch two books at their next meeting at Cearn Hall. The first book covers the history of the Buffalo Bay and Goukamma areas. This book is unique, being the first book published about this area. The book, in Afrikaans, was written by Professor Ebben van Zyl. The second book is about the lives and times of three colourful Irish Foresters who started their forestry careers in Knysna and left their marks here. This book was written by Philip Caveney, in English. The talks will be supported by illustrations and maps and both books will be on sale after the event. The talks will be held at Cearn Hall, Leisure Isle, at 17h00 on Thursday 19 October, 2023. Eskom permitting. Members free, guests are most welcome. S

Belvidere Remembered I was at a family lunch on Sunday when my sister Julie sent a photograph from The Bell pub at Belvidere, asking if we remembered when it was just an old barn. My brother, Charles, remembered it well. “Hugh James and I took a big n of grease we found in the barn and spread it on the railway tracks where the train used to go up the hill behind Belvidere. We thought it would be a hoot if the train slid backwards on the greased tracks.” Terrible what boys get up to. They did exactly that and snuck off to hide in the bushes and wait. The train came chuffing across the lagoon and up around Belvidere and they watched excitedly from their hiding place. Unfortunately for them – but fortunately for the train – it clickety clacked up the incline despite the greased rails. That happened on one of the many family visits to Aunt Ave Duthie who lived in Belvidere, the big old Victorian house they now call Belvidere Manor. We loved going there as children. The house had a deep verandah with nothing between it and the lagoon. We used to run down the big grass expanse – lots of molehills and play at the edge of the lagoon. I remember during one Belvidere visit the older siblings and cousins decided to go off exploring. As I followed one of them called out: “Be careful of the mule.” I froze. It was grazing peacefully in front of the house, but the word “mule” struck fear into my young heart. My mother’s older brother was kicked in the head by a mule as a child, got tetanus and died. To me, mules spelt death. I was stuck on the stoop. When the others returned and asked where I’d been, I was too ashamed to say I had been scared to walk past the mule. I was very young so remember Aunt Ave only vaguely, a rather grand old lady with a gentle demeanor, pouring tea in the drawing room. We children had it on the verandah. Aunt Ave was one of the few people I know who always served thinly sliced bread and bu er at tea me. Ave Duthie was a remarkable woman, way before her me. She studied science, maths and botany in South Africa and later at Cambridge University. In 1902 she founded the department of botany at Victoria College that later became Stellenbosch University. She discovered several new species of plant and had several named a er her. When I was older I remember picking up an unusual piece of seaweed at Noetzie. My father looked it up and said it was called Codium duthieae. “Is it named a er Aunt Ave?” He nodded. I wish I could have known her be er. She chose an unusual career for a woman in those days. I wonder if she, too, felt like Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie who said: “All my life through, new sights of nature made me rejoice like a child.”
