Up Africa # 1: Chobe What a wonderful day we’ve had. I am back at the campsite outside Kasane in Botswana, my laptop perched on a water container, typing by the light of the ablu on block. My travel mates are ge ng the fire going, chopping onions and opening beers, while all around us the insects hum their bushveld song. So much has happened in the last week, but I am going to write only about today, which began when I was awakened in the early hours by the sounds of hyenas. I loved that. We spent the morning driving around Chobe Game Reserve, through the dry bushveld and along the river, with elephants wading through the water and hippo grun ng their call. And I saw my first orange-breasted waxbill. This a ernoon was brilliant. We went on a three-hour cruise on the Chobe River. Oh my, that was wonderful. We met Mpho, our lovely boat driver-cum-guide, and set off at 3pm. It was hot and the river shimmering. What struck me on that trip was the sheer abundance: so many birds, so many trees, so much game. At one moment Mpho pointed out a fish eagle perched in a tree, a herd of kudu beneath it and a young croc on the bank a few metres away. I turned to face the other way and there were two hippo grazing on the island, four elephants and a herd of red lechwe. And birds! Stacks of them. I was especially chuffed to see both long-toed and white-crowned lapwings, African skimmers – one on a nest - and a black egret making a canopy of its wings to reduce the glare on the water while fishing. It was great being able to cruise so close to the animals, which didn’t seem to mind. We stopped to watch one big ellie grazing on Sidudu Island in a waterlogged sec on of grass. He pulled up a trunkful of grass, swished it backwards and forwards in the water and then ate it. “He is washing the grass to get the soil off the roots so the soil does not grind down his molars,” Mpho explained. “If an elephant looks a er his molars, he will have a long life.” Dental hygiene for ellies. Mpho said the island had been the subject of a dispute between Botswana and Namibia. Each country said it belonged to them. Botswana wanted it for conserva on because in the dry season elephant, buffalo, hippo, lechwe and other animals grazed on the green grasses. Namibia wanted it for farming. Eventually the ma er was taken to the Interna onal Court in The Hague which ruled that it belonged to Botswana. “They measured the width and the depth of the two channels on either side of the island, and said the Namibian side was wider and deeper, which meant it was the main river, so the island to the south was in Botswana territory,” he said. What good luck for conserva on. Imagine that fantas c island, so full of wildlife, filled with cows instead. It does not bear thinking about. We’re heading for Zambia tomorrow. Right now it’s me to join the others around the fire.
