Up Africa: The Start By the me you read this I will be si ng outside my tent in Botswana having a sundowner to the sounds of the wild. I am sooo excited! I am heading off on an overland trip tomorrow to Kenya to see the wildebeest migra on. But as one of my heroes, Ralph Waldo Emerson, said: “It is not the des na on. It is the journey.” In this case, it is both. There will be four of us, two of whom I have known for yonks, and the third who I have met just four mes. Two 4x4 bakkies, tents, stoves, binox and doos wyn. It is lighter and doesn’t break. We are heading through Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania to Kenya, back into Tanzania and then Malawi, Zambia, Caprivi and down south through Namibia to get home around mid October. There is something wonderful about a road trip, the “romance of the open road” immortalised by authors like Jack Kerouac of the “beat genera on”. The distant horizon that you never reach, stopping at places where you step into a world that is en rely new to you. We in Africa are on a cusp between the old and new, with the old African landscape shrinking quickly. Speaking of ancient landscapes, our first stop is the Karoo Na onal Park. The Karoo is an ancient landscape, eroded in many places to expose areas where the dinosaurs once roamed, and creatures even older. There are few places in the world that are as special as the Karoo basin for fossils. It is not just that many thousands have been found, but that the sediments cover a con nuous record of the plants and animals that lived there from 240 million years ago to 190 million years ago, a con nuous record of 50 million years! Because of this, the Karoo basin captures how some creatures evolved from one life form to another. For instance, you find fossils here of “mammal-like rep les”, animals that are neither rep les nor mammals, but are evolving from one to the other. I remember years back Sanparks launched the short Fossil Trail in the Karoo Park with a special sec on for the blind. No ces are in braille, and there are fossils that people can touch. There was a group of young blind people who were invited to the launch, and I asked what they thought of it. They told me what I should have thought of, but had not, which is that the fossils just felt like rocks to them – un l they touched one that had teeth. “When I felt the teeth, then I understood how this was once an animal,” the lad told me, and his face lit up. I was quite struck by this, about how li le we sighted people understand what it is like to be blind from birth. Anyway, that is where we will be tomorrow, our first small step on our great African adventure. So cheers guys – and wherever I manage to get internet out in the wilds, I will send you a Stoep Chat update. “The gladdest moment in human life, methinks, is a departure into unknown lands.” Sir Richard Burton.
