Scrap Best Before I read a UK news report this week that made me punch the air with delight. Marks and Spencer is going to scrap “best before” dates on food products to try to get customers to cut down on food waste. Hooray guys, but what took you so long? Let’s hope Woolworths, Checkers, Pick n Pay and Spar do the same here. This is not the “use by” date, it is the rather meaningless “best before” date. The ar cle in The Guardian quoted M&S saying that now customers would have to “use their judgment to determine whether goods are s ll fine to eat”. That made me laugh. Did M&S really think consumers suspended their judgment about whether food was okay to eat, and slavishly followed the “best before” date? Then I heard the echo of my ques on, and realised that, sadly, some people do exactly that. I have friends who toss out perfectly good food because it has passed the “best before” date. In this way “best before” dates contribute to food waste. Research by WWF found that in South Africa, one third of all food produced is never eaten, but ends up on rubbish dumps. This is 10 million tons of the 31 million tons of food produced in SA every year. About 70% of this is fruit, vegetables and cereals, a loss valued at R61 billion. That is like buying three supermarket bags of food and tossing one bag in the bin. This in a country where millions do not have enough to eat. A UCT study found that one in four people in Cape Town go to bed hungry. An organisa on called Wrap has worked out that every day in the UK 7 million slices of bread are thrown away, 5 million potatoes, 4.4 million apples, one million slices of ham, 660,000 eggs and 260,000 unopened packs of cheese. And luxury foods too: 82,000 tons of cake is chucked in the bin daily, 300,000 unopened packets of crisps (ooh, how could they!) and 700,000 unopened packets of sweets and chocolates. “Best before” dates are not to blame for all of this, but they are one of the reasons why millions of people throw away tons of good food. It is high me they were scrapped. It is not only food that is wasted. Every me you toss out a banana, you are throwing away the water and energy that went into growing, transpor ng and packaging the banana. WWF says the energy wasted in SA every year by producing food that is not eaten, would be enough to power Johannesburg for 16 weeks. The water used in SA to produce food that is wasted, would fill over 600,000 Olympic swimming pools. Even worse, was ng food feeds climate change. If the UK alone stopped was ng food, it would prevent at least 18 million tons of CO2 emissions being released into the air. That is the equivalent of taking one in five cars off UK roads. Was ng food is bad news. Scrapping “best before” dates is a step in the right direc on to help curb this. Let’s hope South African supermarkets are listening.
