We Are Stardust Weren’t those photographs taken by NASA’s James Webb telescope just wonderful? I kept staring at them when they were released last week and thinking: “How can humans be so clever?” What brainpower it must have taken to design a telescope that can photograph stars and galaxies 13 million light years away, that allows us to see what the universe looked like 13 million years ago. Just astonishing. When we look at those photographs, we really are looking into the past, into what happened soon a er the Big Bang, that moment when the universe came into being, billions of years before Earth existed. I was very struck by the spectacular photograph of the Carina Nebula, a giant cloud of gas and dust. The NASA astronomer explained that gas and dust are the raw materials from which new stars are formed, and there is a sec on of the Carina Nebula called the “star nursery”. That reminded me of something an astronomer told me years ago: that we humans are made from the same stuff that stars are made of. “So the song is true,” he said. “We really are stardust.” He was referring of course to the song Woodstock made famous by Crosby S lls Nash & Young, which has the chorus: “We are stardust, we are golden.” It really ckled me that a wis ul hippie-era song was scien fically correct, and that the elements that make up our bodies – oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, calcium and many others - were formed in stars billions of years ago, and are now in us. The ul mate cosmic connec on. Closer to home we have our own Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in Sutherland. I remember one amusing incident when I was on a press trip to SALT. We stayed overnight so we could see the astronomers at work. One of them told the photographers that if they wanted to get a nice shot, they should posi on their cameras to face the celes al southern pole, leave the aperture open for a few hours, and they would get a photograph showing the stars as streaks of light in a circle around this center point in the heavens. Our photographer, Andrew, duly went off to set up his camera on the ground. A er a couple of hours, he went out into the night to collect it. He was away a long me, so I went to look for him. It was pitch dark so I called out and asked if everything was okay. When he replied I started to giggle. He could not find his camera. He could not put on a torch, as that would ruin the photograph. Eventually we formed a line with other journalists and slowly walked forward in the dark un l one of them found the camera. And what a lovely pic Andrew had captured: swirling stars in a heavenly circle with the SALT telescope silhoue ed in the foreground. Back to humans being stardust. I found this interes ng quote from astronomer Carl Sagan: “We are the representa ves of the cosmos; we are an example of what hydrogen atoms can do, given 15 billion years of cosmic evolu on.”
