Threats to Nature’s Bounty I have just seen a deligh ul video clip that made my heart sing: three o ers tro ng along the beach at Noetzie. They stopped now and then, scratched an ear, looked around, and then tro ed on un l they disappeared behind some rocks. It was wonderful! The o er clip reminded me of the former head of SANParks, Robbie Robinson. I remember one evening listening to him describe the ba les he’d had in ge ng the now famous O er Trail established. Robbie, who was the head of the Tsitsikamma Na onal Park at the me, struggled for years to convince the old guard in the parks board to allow the trail to be built. Thanks goodness he persevered. Robbie also told me a lovely tale about an o er. He and his family saw o ers quite o en in the Tsitsikamma park, but there was one par cular o er that seemed to take a liking to them. It used to come up to their canoes and even up to them when they were swimming, and play around. The family grew really fond of it. Then one day it was gone. As the days went by, Robbie began to worry. “I thought it may have suffered the same fate as the o er in Ring of Bright Water,” he said at the me. As those who read the book will remember, Gavin Maxwell’s famous pet o er was killed by a guy digging ditches. Back to the Tsitsikamma: as the days turned into weeks with no sigh ng of the o er, Robbie and his family gave up hope of ever seeing it again. Then one day it returned. They were delighted. To Robbie’s amazement, he saw a couple of young o ers swimming behind it. “It had gone off to breed, and had come back to show us its family,” he said. It was a lovely tale. While s ll smiling remembering, Robbie’s o er story, a piece of grim news dropped into my inbox: the UN’s IPBES report on biodiversity. It is the result of four year’s work by many scien sts and it tells us this: Biodiversity – plants and animals – is being lost, and nature is being degraded, at a faster rate now than at any other point in human history. A key reason for this crisis is the way poli cal and economic decision-makers value nature – mainly for “short-term profits” – a view that excludes the true value of nature and how our lives depend on it. Imagine if we had to create rain. Or make soil. Or regulate climate. Or a thousand other of nature’s “services” that are given to us free of charge. Poli cians and economists need to recognise nature’s true value when they make decisions, and not simply value the “hard-cash” aspects of nature, like food provision. I think it’s up to us ordinary ci zens to help them realise this, and here’s how we can make a start: by commen ng on the dra white paper on biodiversity on the Department of Forestry Fisheries and Environment website: www.dffe.gov.za If we want our grandchildren to see o ers gambling about on beaches – and a host of other aspects of nature – we all need to do something now.

Workshop ● Ensure the servicing, repairs & routine maintenance of all Estate vehicles, machinery, and equipment in consultation with the Manager: Operations, Environmental & Facilities Officer, and other Supervisors, in accordance with any warranty / Estate standards; ● Check report and record work done, and tests carried out and to action any further work required / faults that needed to be fixed; and ● Assess cost estimates (cost, time, effort) for required repair or maintenance jobs. Other ● Manage, coach, and motivate the Store and Workshop employees; ● Plan work rotas, assign tasks appropriately and appraise results; and ● Assist with other duties which may be reasonably required to be performed as laid down by the Manager: Operations. Environmental & Facilities Officer This newly created position will suit a competent, innovative and experienced Environmental & Facilities Officer to champion the Estate’s environmental and sustainability strategy, and to proactively manage the Estate’s various recreational / outdoor activities, venues, and sites. Key Responsibilities: • Develop, implement, and maintain the Estate’s Environmental Management Plan, Fire Management Controls, horticulture and recreational facility plans, policies, practices, and procedures, in consultation with the Estate Manager, including monitoring, providing reports on the plan implementation and maintenance, and devising strategies to meet targets and to encourage best practice; • Responsible for rehabilitation of vegetation as required by the EMP; • Develop and expand the scope of the Estate’s recreational facilities in consultation with the Estate Manager, to meet Resident expectations and potentially, future profit generating opportunities; • Prepare, implement, and monitor the Department’s budget for any major expenditure items / projects; • Engage with the Management team to develop projects and funding for environmental, horticulture and occasional activities, and in particular recreational facility maintenance, upkeep, improvement, and expansion; • Oversee operations and events being held at the Estate’s various facilities, including maintenance conditions affecting facility operations and security i.e., ensure facility rules and safety guidelines are followed; • Perform regular recreational facility and environmental audits to identify any risks or non-conformity issues and / or any gaps / shortcomings and take the required corrective action in consultation with the Estate Manager; • Develop and monitor control systems to prevent and / or deal with legal / internal policy violations pertaining to the environment and use of Estate facilities; • Provide training to the Estate employees on environmental, horticulture and recreational programmes and policies, including plant care advice i.e., native plant propagation / alien vegetation, basic plant maintenance / restoration, etc; • Ensure the Estate is compliant with environmental legislation / regulations and keep up to date with changes in legislation and initiatives including international legislation where applicable; • Raise awareness of environmental issues with Residents, organise visits and talks on environmental topics, and provide guidance on the appropriate vegetation / plants to be grown on the Estate; and • Assist with other duties which may be reasonably required to be performed own by the Estate Manager. Pezula Private Estate is looking for suitably qualified staff to join its team. Finance / Human Resources Officer This newly created ‘’hands-on’’ position will not only be a support role to the Estate Manager, but also provide and manage the Finance, Payroll and Human Resource services for the Estate. Key Responsibilities: Finance • Manage the preparation of the Estate’s financial budget, cash-flow statements, annual financial statement, etc; • Provide financial reports, interpret financial information, and provide recommendations on courses of action; • Provide accounting and information systems commensurate with the needs of the Estate, in accordance with GAAP; • Analyse the Estate’s actual performance compared with the Estate’s agreed business plans; • Develop trends and projections for the Estate’s finances / investments; • Manage the relationship with the Estate’s auditors to ensure appropriate monitoring of the Estate’s finances is maintained; • Ensure the Estate’s tax compliance as required by SARS; • Engage with the Estate’s Management team to ensure the financial needs of each unit is considered when preparing budgets, including a mechanism to monitor expenditure in-line with the approved budgets; • Manage and control the payroll system / services for the Estate and ensure compliance with relevant legislation; • Attend, prepare for and actively participate in the appropriate meetings held by the Pezula Board as and when required; and • Deliver the Estate’s ‘day-to-day’ financial requirements i.e., transactional processing, monthly account preparation and reconciliation, bank account monitoring and reconciliation, management of all debtors and creditors, asset register, management of investments, etc. Human Resources / Payroll • Ensure the HR function is legally compliant in all areas of responsibility; • Ensure the well-being and behaviour of all the staff are of excellent quality standards; • Act as the point of contact regarding labour legislation issues / industrial relations matters, including managing Employee disciplinaries / grievances; • Develop, maintain, manage and proactively identify ways to improve all the HR policies and procedures, including providing support to Employees in resolving any HR-related issues that might arise; • Manage staff attendance, absence and overtime; • Support annual and quarterly performance reviews; • Manage all on-boarding, probation periods and termination processes; • Review, design, implement and manage the Estate’s performance review procedures, and ensure periodic and annual employee performance reviews; • Assess training needs and coordinate learning and development initiatives for all Estate employees; • Monitor the HR budget; • Maintain employee files and records in electronic and / or paper form; and • Deliver the Estate’s ‘day-to-day’ human resources requirements, i.e., calculation and processing of payroll etc. Key Requirements: • Proven track record of balanced experience and leadership success for both finance and HR / Payroll functions; • Degree / Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting (BCom / Nat Dip in Accounting, Finance) or a related qualification; • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a middle-management financial role, preferably within an organisation where the role also had human resources responsibility, including payroll; • In depth knowledge of current GAAP, the Income Tax Act and labour legislation; • Excellent knowledge / hands-on experience with accounting, HR information, IT and payroll services / systems / applications; • Hands-on experience with budgeting and risk management; • Solid interpersonal and communication skills across all levels, particularly at board level; • Excellent analytical, decision-making skills; • Strong leadership abilities; and • Excellent Sage Pastel, VIP Payroll and MS Office skills, particularly Excel.
